For better part o 40 years, my lie has

been shaped by three things: music, church, and words. And or the better

art o 40 years, those three strains have been tightly woven together. As a

id, I loved the 15 minutes o every Sunday school hour that was given over

o song in my small South Texas church each week and singing around the

ampre at summer camp in the Texas Hill Country seemed to me to be the

erect way to end the day.

Church was a center point o our amily’s lie throughout my childhood and

outh, and nding a new church home was a priority each time I moved as an

dult. I was ortunate as a teenager to have a senior pastor who hosted what

was essentially a seminary education or those youth who were interested

n spending two hours every Wednesday evening or two years discussing

theology, doctrine, and ecclesial history in a setting where

questions and exploration were encour-

aged—and homework was assigned!

And as an editor, writer, and educator, I work with words on a daily basis

and know the power they carry, or good and or ill.

One way in which all those strains come together or me is that I tend

to pay close attention to words, to make them a part o my internal song i

they’re not already set to music and to help them stand alone i they are (i.e.,

without the melody, do these lyrics have resonance?), and I “hear” theological

lessons in songs, essays, novels, and news reports that are not deliberately

inclined that way.

An example: A new song by one o my avorite musical artists contains

the lyric, “When lies become the truth, I run to you.” That secular lyric had

immediate resonance or me when I rst heard it last week and I ound mysel

reecting on it.

To whom do we run when lies become “the truth”? For 37 years our church

has presented as truth the lie o incompatibility, that “the practice o homo-

sexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.”

R e C o N C i l i N g M i N i s t R i e s N e t w o R k P A G E F O

We hear those words repeated at every

General Conerence and at so many points between. And to that lie, ever-increasing

numbers are responding, in truth and with love, that all o God’s creation is o sacred

worth; that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and straight, we are all powerully

and permanently a part o God’s amily; and that open hearts, open minds, and open

doors must move beyond slogan to reality.

Reconciling Ministries Network is a powerul truth in my journey and

my evolving relationship with a church that has nurtured, sustained,

challenged, caressed, battered, and bruised. At General Coner-

ences and RMN Convocations, and through my service on the RMN

board, I have made riends I still treasure and toil beside. From

hat perspective, I have witnessed RMN speak truth powerully,

prophetically, joyously, and doggedly—across 25 years and more

ecently, through the unique Called to Witness campaign (see map,

pg. 8 ), with its 22 regional organizing trainings building to the power-

ul, aithul, aith-lled One Family Tree witness at General Conerence 2008 in Fort

Worth (see photos throughout).

I carry with me to this day the truth o two songs rom my childhood in that small

South Texas church. I carry the memory o Pauline Miracle, a pillar o our church and

my godmother, who even ater developing dementia that let her unable to remem-

ber my name would hold my hand as we sang the words

“Jesus loves me,

this I know,” and then invariably say as we

nished the song, “And he loves you too, child. He loves you so

much.” And I carry the memory o Otheal Zorn, the tiny dynamo who or decdirected the children’s Sunday school program. Almost every Sunday or the ei

so years I was under her charge, she led us in singing the words

avorite hymn, “Where he leads me I will ollow / Where he

me I will ollow / Where he leads me I will ollow / I’ll go

him, with him, all the way.”

When lies are presented as truth, I remember these t

Jesus loves me. Jesus loves you. And where he leads me,

I will, ollow.

I ollow—and RMN journeys with me. This year we myears o our reconciling journey and, truth be told, I can’t wait to cele

with my reconciling amily at Estes Park in September!

eaching twenty-two strategic Annual Conerences (see map), this

edgling program mobilized 501 grassroots volunteers. These volunteers

erved as missionaries to their General Conerence delegates, building

elationships, telling their personal stories, and urging delegates to vote

or ull inclusion at the 2008 General Conerence.

The delegate meeting was an invigorating experience. It elt wonderul to

e part o a well-organized group striving or human dignity in a cause that

will ultimately prevail.” (North Texas)

The delegates are already strangely afected because they heard individual

tories ahead o time and shared their own stories. What an astounding

day it has been!” (Delaware)
