Grounding and Electrical Safety

CAUTION: Kentrox equipment and peripherals contain electrostatic sensitive components. Proper handling, shipping, and storage precautions must be exercised.

During installation, read and observe all additional Cautions and Warnings shown in Device Setup Step A: Install SIM Card in RMC-7XX-G, Step B: Attach Chassis Ground, and Connecting Step B: Connect Battery Power (Optional).

Installation

CAUTION: For Westell’s Kentrox equipment to operate safely and correctly, there must be a safety ground strap between the equipment ground bolts and the office ground. Installers should wear a grounding wrist strap throughout the installation process.

Environment

CAUTION: In the event that RMC-7XX-G has been subjected to adverse environmental conditions, a service inspection of RMC-7XX-G should be made to ensure safe operation.

CAUTION: The RMC-7XX-G is for use in restricted access locations only.

The Federal Communications Commission has set limits for emitted radio interference, and RMC-7XX-G is constructed with this electromagnetic interference (EMI) limitation in mind. RMC-7XX-G is classified under FCC regulations as a Class A device, that is, a device for use in commercial environments and not in residential areas. This device has been tested and shown to comply with the following FCC rule: Part 15 Subpart J. Operation of this equipment in a residential area may cause interference to radio and TV reception, requiring the user to take whatever steps are necessary to correct the interference.

Clock Battery

CAUTION: The Real Time Clock battery is intended to last for the life of the product, and should not require replacement under normal operation. If for any reason the battery does require replacement, the unit should be returned for service at Westell. Contact Customer Assistance if this need arises.

Battery Charging

CAUTION: The RMC-7XX-G has a wide range input power input that can support + or – 20 to 60 VDC. When using the battery input, ensure that the battery configuration (usually 24 or 48 Volts) matches the input power and polarity provided the unit.

RMC-7XX-G Usage

Important: RMC-7XX-G is an adaptation of another product in Westell’s Kentrox Remote Suite of Intelligent Site Management Products. Some features are not needed, supported, or intended for use in the Gateway application. Accordingly, these features have been omitted from the following instructions for RMC-7XX-G installation and use.

Do not enter new configuration with the Command Line Interface.

This Installation Guide covers all of the RMC-7XX-G features necessary to perform the Gateway functions. Westell strongly recommends this product and its features be used only in accordance with the instructions in this guide. Misuse of the product features outside the scope of the following instructions could damage the product and disable the Gateway functionality.

Device Setup and Installation

Step A: Install SIM Card in RMC-7XX-G

1. Remove the top cover from RMC-7XX-G by removing the screws from the center of each side panel with a screwdriver (See Figure 1). Lift the top cover off the unit.

Note: RMC-7XX-G Remote Wireless Gateway’s SIM card holder is designed for a Mini SIM

Card. Use of a Micro SIM card or a Nano Sim Card requires the appropriate adapter.

2. The SIM card slides into a card holder that hinges outward to allow installation. To install the SIM card:

A. Lift the unhinged end of the card holder up from the circuit board. Insert the square end of the SIM card all the way into the slot in the unhinged edge (see Figure 2). Make sure the card

is oriented with the exposed circuitry down (to contact the circuit board) and the notched corner (if it has one) at the open end of the holder.

B. Gently press and hold the card holder against the circuit board and slide the metal hasp toward the open end of the holder to lock it into place.

The card holder will remain locked against the circuit board until the hasp is moved back to unlock it.

Important: Installers might need to move the antenna leads connected to the phone modem (see Figure 2) to install the SIM card. Care must be taken not to tear these leads loose or otherwise damage their connections.

3. Reinstall the RMC-7XX-G top cover.

Step B: Attach Chassis Ground

Connect the chassis ground of RMC-7XX-G (see Figure 3) to a suitable ground such as the frame ground of a rack system or a reliable earth ground using 14AWG conductor.

CAUTION: The chassis ground must be connected to the same earthing electrode conductor as the in building wireless system/repeater.

CAUTION: The chassis must be located in the same immediate area (such as adjacent cabinets) as other equipment connected to the in building wireless system/repeater and earthing electrode conductor. The system cannot be earthed elsewhere.

No switching or disconnecting devices can occur between the earthed conductor of the in building wireless system/repeater and the earthing electrode conductor.

Run and dress the ground wire to accepted company standards.

Use a 3/8” or 10 mm socket wrench or socket driver to loosen and tighten the ground lug nut to avoid damaging the cabinet.

Notes: Apply an appropriate antioxidant compound to the bare conductors before crimping

the connector to the connector mating surface.

If necessary, scrape the paint off the ground connection point to assure a good ground connection, and apply antioxidant to the connection point.

Step C: Install RMC-7XX-G Onto Base Plate

The RMC-7XX-G is designed to attach to a solid base plate, allowing its use in a variety of physical configurations (mounted horizontally or vertically, inside a case, etc.).

1. Align the slotted screw openings (adjoining and perpendicular to the sides of the unit) with the properly spaced screw openings on the base plate. These openings are spaced as shown in Figure 1-5.

Tip: Use a pencil or soft-tipped marker to mark drill holes on the base plate, if necessary.

2. Set the RMC-7XX-G in place, insert screws, and attach firmly to the base plate.

Connecting RMC-7XX-G

Step A: Connect Power Feed Wire with AC Adapter to DC Power Input

RMC-7XX-G comes supplied with an AC-to-DC power adapter prewired to a terminal block. The prewiring assures correct polarity.

1. Insert the terminal block end of the power feed line into the +24/-48VDC power connector receptacle in the lower right corner of the top of the RMC-7XX-G.

2. Secure the connector by tightening the two screws with a 3mm flathead screwdriver.

3. Plug the male AC plug at the other end of the power feed line into an approved 110V AC power outlet.

Both the green DC LED and the red FLT LED will illuminate for approximately 30 seconds. The red FLT LED then will flash for approximately 1 minute 45 seconds, and then go out. The green DC LED should remain illuminated as long as power is applied, signifying a successful installation.

Step B: Connect Battery Power (Optional)

Users can add battery backup power by connecting RMC-7XX-G with a fuse in series to a 24VF battery. Connect the batter power feed to the input connector (see Front Panel Components - RMC-7XX-G Gateway). Be careful to observe polarity.

Notes: Use 16AWG or larger copper conductors.

Strip ends of wire 5/16 in. (7 mm), and apply appropriate antioxidant compound to the bare ends prior to making connections.

Fuse any external battery connection at 2A max.

Step C: Connect Ethernet Port Cables

The switched Ethernet ports allow you to connect Ethernet-capable monitored devices such as repeaters to RMC-7XX-G, and allow you to connect RMC-7XX-G to a laptop, PC, or LAN for provisioning and control.

1. Use an 8-pin modular plug to 8-pin modular plug straight 100BaseT cable (such as Kentrox part number CAB182) to connect one of the switched Ethernet ports (labeled ETHERNET on the RMC-7XX-G front panel) to an Ethernet device on your network.

2. Use the same kind of cable to connect a laptop to the other Ethernet port.

Notes: A laptop needs to be set to DHCP to access the RMC-7XX-G Web UI.

The web UI must be used to configure the RMC-7XX-G. The device does not support configuration by Command Line Interface.

Log in

Open a web browser on the laptop and navigate to https://192.168.1.1. The RMC-7XX-G web user interface will open, displaying the login screen shown in Figure 5.

Important: When using the HTTPS protocol and accessing the web interface for the first time, an error page will display indicating that there is a problem with the web site’s security certificate. Click Continue to this web site to accept the security certificate and continue with the acceptance options as prompted.

Log in using these defaults:

User Name: admin

Password: password

Click Login. The web UI will open to the Device Settings screen.

Screen Features

The RMC-7XX-G screen always displays these features (see Figure 6):

The Westell logo on the left side of the top banner has a clickable link which opens the westell.com web site under a separate browser tab.

The device Host Name appears on top of the right side of the top banner.

The Signal indicator appears below the Host Name on the right side of the top banner, showing the wireless signal strength presently sensed by the device. The indicator will range from zero bars (no signal) up to five bars (excellent signal). If the modem has no service, “No Service” appears. If no modem is found, “N/A” appears. The modem signal strength automatically updates every 15 seconds and also is shown in the About Display. When the user moves the cursor over the Host Name or Signal indicator, a tooltip message appears with the Modem IP, the Signal Strength, and the Service Level.

The Navigation pane spans the left side of the screen below the top banner. This lists the RMC-7XX-G dialogs that the user can access depending upon their user status: Devices, Users, Network, About, and Log Out. Each of these is described later in this guide. The screen presently displayed appears white, while all the others are gray. The name and icon of the screens not presently displayed turn a lighter gray when the user moves the cursor over them.

Screen Size and ArrangementThe Web UI screen will automatically resize and rearrange contents to accommodate the user’s screen. Images in this guide show screens as they will appear on a laptop or PC screen. On a Nexus 6P smart phone, the display will be smaller and the contents will fill more of the screen and automatically change from portrait to landscape orientation, and vice-versa, as the device is rotated.

The same features appear no matter what screen size is being used.

Web UI User Profiles

RMC-7XX-G supports three user profile types, each with different capabilities:

Supervisor users have full access to all features of the web UI and full editing powers for Devices, Network, and Users. Supervisor users can add, remove, and edit existing users.

Management users have some editing capabilities. They can edit any part of Device settings. They can edit all but the “Host name” portion of Network settings. They do not have access to edit users.

Status users have read-only access to the web UI, and do not have permission to modify, add, or delete anything in the accessible screens.

Profiles are set when the user is added in the User Settings, which are only accessible to Supervisor users. Supervisors also can change user profiles as needed.

Device Settings Screen Features

The Device Settings screen appears by default when a user initially logs into RMC-7XX-G. It also appears when the user clicks Devices in the navigation pane. See Figure 6 and Figure 7 below.

Device Settings display columns show each device’s IP Address, Status, a Port Settings link , and a Description. A row is displayed for each device.

When the user clicks on a device row, the IP Address and Description fields open for editing. The Update button saves edits and updates the Status display for that device. Edits are canceled by clicking the Cancel button. See Figure 8.

Any time a device row is selected, it subsequently appears highlighted in a tan shade until another device is selected, the Add button is clicked, or the user logs out. See Figure 8.

Status icons are a green checkmark for Online, a red exclamation point for Offline, and a blue question mark for Unknown. A tooltip message stating the status appears when the cursor hovers over a status icon. Users can update the Status display any time by clicking the device row and then the Update button. The status of a newly added offline device will initially appear as Unknown

The Ports link in each row opens the list of ports for that device. Refer to the Ports section.

The trash can icon at the right end of each row is the Delete button. Click this to delete a device from the device settings. A confirmation window (shown at right) will appear; click Yes to delete, or No or the X at upper right to cancel the deletion. Once a deletion is confirmed, the row will disappear upon the next automatic display update.

Adding a DeviceThe Add button at lower left opens a new row with blank fields to add a device IP address and description. This is shown in Figure 9.

The blank IP Address field initially appears outlined in red with an Errors message informing the user that the field is required. A tooltip message “This field is required” similarly prompts for the IP Address.

IP addresses must conform to the LAN Settings (shown on the Network display). An attempt to enter an IP address which does not conform to the LAN settings will generate an error message.

A Description must be entered to add a device. An error message will appear if the user attempts to save a new device without a description. In that and other scenarios with improper or rejected IP Address or Description entries, the added device row will appear highlighted with a red triangle in the corner . Unless the fields are corrected, that row will be deleted upon logout.

Once the IP Address and Description are added, the user then clicks the Update button to save the added device or the Cancel button to cancel the addition. In Figure 11, the cursor is positioned to click the Update button to add a device.

Device Port SettingsClick the Ports icon in the device’s row to open the Port Settings display shown in Figure 10.

This display lists the Protocol, Enabled status, Internet Port number, and Device Port number for each of the device’s ports.

Any port can be disabled and re-enabled by unchecking and checking the box in the Enabled column and then clicking Save. The Internet Port numbers can be changed as needed by selecting and retyping the field contents or using the up and down arrows to increase or decrease the number, and then clicking the Save button. Unsaved changes to these settings can be canceled by clicking the X at upper right to close the display.

Clicking the Add Port button at lower left opens a new bottom row with blank fields to enter the Protocol name, Internet port number, and Device port number. See Figure 11. Another new row is created with each click of the Add Port button even if prior additions are incomplete.

View All Mapped PortsClick the View Ports button at lower right in the Device Settings display to open the All Mapped Ports display, shown in Figure 12.

The All Mapped Ports displays all Device IP Addresses, and which Device Ports are mapped to which Internet Ports. It also shows whether each port mapping is enabled or disabled . These parameters are not configurable in this display.

Contents of All Mapped Ports display columns can be sorted and columns can be concealed and revealed with the column header drop-down menus shown in Figure 12. Columns can be rearranged by dragging the column header to the desired location. The display can be resized by dragging the bottom border up or down.

Users can use other Device Settings features with the All Mapped Ports display open. The display cannot be concealed from view except by closing it.

Users Settings

Click Users in the Navigation Pane to open the User Settings display as shown in Figure 13. The User Settings are available only to Supervisor users. Users does not appear in the navigation panes of Management and Status users.

To add a user, click the Add button at lower left. The Add User dialog box opens. Add the desired User name and password, confirm the password, and set the user’s profile (Status, Management, or Supervisor -- see Web UI User Profiles) from the drop-down menu. Click the Save button to save the new user, or the X at upper right to close the dialog without saving the new user.

The password confirmation must match the first password entry or the dialog box will enable the Save command. Only letters and numbers are permitted in passwords.

To edit a user, click the Edit button in that user’s row. The Edit User dialog box will open under that user’s name, with blank fields to change the password and the drop-down menu to reset the user profile as desired. Click Save to save the edits, or the X at upper right to close the dialog box without saving the changes. As with the Add User dialog box, the password must be confirmed to permit changes to be saved.

To delete a user, click the delete icon at the right side of that user’s row. A Confirm Deletion message will appear naming the user; click Yes to delete that user, or No or the X at upper right to cancel the deletion.

Network Settings

Click Network in the Navigation Pane to open the Network Settings display, shown in Figure 15.

Notes: All Save and Cancel buttons on the Network Settings screen are disabled until a field

is edited. When contents of any editable field are changed, the Save and Cancel buttons for those settings become active. Click Save to save changes, or Cancel to retain the previous settings.

Only users with Supervisor or Management profiles can edit Network Settings unless noted otherwise. Status users can only view LAN and Firewall settings. See Web UI User Profiles.

Host SettingsThe Host Settings shows the modem address and an editable Hostname field. Only users with Supervisor profile can edit the Hostname.

LAN SettingsThe LAN Settings display, shown at right, include the LAN IP Address, Network Prefix Length, a checkbox to enable/disable the DHCP Server, and, when the DHCP Server is enabled, a pair of windows to set the lower and upper limits of DHCP Range.

Important: If the LAN IP Address is changed while the user is connected via LAN (as opposed to over the modem), the connection to the GUI will be lost and you will have to navigate to the new LAN address in a web browser.

Firewall SettingsThe Firewall Settings, shown at right, include a Firewall Enabled checkbox, an icon

to reveal an explanatory tooltip, and a list of network addresses allowed by the firewall when enabled. The firewall blocks all traffic on the modem interface except for that originating from or going to the Allowed Networks in the specified ranges shown in the Firewall Settings

To disable/enable the firewall, uncheck/check the Enabled checkbox.

To add a network, click the Add button at lower left. Blank fields open to enter the network address and set the Prefix Length. Click Update to add the network or Cancel to cancel.

To edit a network, click on the network row and its Address and Prefix Length fields will open for editing. Click Update to edit the network or Cancel to cancel.

To delete a network, click the delete icon at the right end of that network’s row. A confirm Deletion message will appear; click Yes to delete the network, or No or the X at upper right to cancel the deletion. When a network is deleted, that row disappears from the Allowed Networks list when the display is refreshed.

Click Save to save changes made through the above steps. The following message will appear:

Click Yes to save the changes and continue, or No to cancel the changes and return to the Network settings. If your connection to the Gateway Web UI is not via one of the allowed networks, your connection will be lost, and you will need to navigate back to the UI via a browser entry.

About Display

The About Display is a static display shown in Figure 16.
