It’s A Wonderful Life

6Wendell Barnes

Message from the Director

Is there anyonealive who has not

seen this movie? It's probably one ofthe best knownstories ever! Asalways, when Iagree to direct, I goto the originalsource, which is ashort story written

by Phillip Van Doren Stern called "TheGreatest Gift." If you read this story youwill see that it has little resemblance to themovie other than the basic plot. But it's agood place to start! This is my thirdinvolvement with a stage production of "It'sA Wonderful Life." Last time it was done byRLT nine years ago, I was recruited to playUncle Billy by director Karen Bowling, andI ended up winning my first Roman Awardfor the portrayal! This time I have entrustedmy legacy to the wonderful Don Rusawwho has done Uncle Billy proud. Mysecond time was in a musical small castversion of the show done at the 1902Stock Exchange in Adairsville about sevenyears ago. I directed many RLT veteransincluding Dana Williams, Jeffery Self (asGeorge), Brett Adams (whose little brotherChandler is in this production!) and BillNewton, among others. I ended up havingto play Ernie when that actor became ill, soI wore two hats in that production. For mylatest involvement with the show in 2011, Idecided that the story is so iconic and well-known that we don't need to waste a lot oftime and expense on set, so I have setmost of the scenes in George's mind on ablank stage, with the exception of theoffice and home scenes. I think that mostof you will be able to imagine what thesettings are since you know the movie sowell. I think it works out beautifully and Ihope you do too. This production wouldnever have happened at all if it were notfor several key people. First is myproducer, Elaine Gerrin, who tackled thisformidable task with dedication and aprofessionalism that I could not haveimagined. Her contribution to this show iseverything except the artistic direction, from sets, lights, sound, costumes, props,make-up, hair and everything else inbetween. Elaine, you have been a gem, aswell as Tommy (for sound) and

granddaughter Kelsie as helpers, and youare one more example of how RLTfunctions as a community theatre with theinvolvement of families that make it allwork. My assistant director, GingerMcClure, has been right by my side everyrehearsal directing my …production, and Icould not have done this show without her.She keeps saying she has learned somuch from me, but it is I who have beenthe beneficiary of the education in thissituation. And speaking of families, herdaughter Cardie has been here manynights making herself invaluable to theproduction in so many ways. And speakingof families, Keith Williams as George hasbeen a delight to work with, and he bringsalong his daughter Abbey as MissAndrews, his wife Naomi as ourphotographer (see that beautiful posterphotography?) and fund-raiser (along withTina Brinson), and even his father-in-lawTom Carver as his nemesis, Mr. Potter. What a joy that family is to RLT! TeresaCox has worked with costumes along withJohn Barnett, and of course, she bringsher beautiful daughter Kara who grew upon the RLT stage into the role of Mary. Iwas so pleased to learn that I was turningmy show over into the hands of DaveWillis, the best stage manager one couldhope for, and Tony Cargle has been a lifesaver in building our sets. Pam Shoemakerdoes wonders with make-up and hair. RLTpresident Chuck Morris always workswonders with lights, and his beautiful wifeMegan Keating is our graphic designerwho designed the posters, tickets andprograms. Tracy Slack Hellriegel has beena joy providing all of the other decorativeniceties that make the productioncomplete, including our beautiful windowdisplay. It has been a joy to work withthese and so many others. And what acast I have been blessed with-many RLTveterans and newcomers--so if you aresitting out there wondering how you canget involved, just come to the nextauditions and see! There's something foreveryone at RLT! May you all have themerriest of holiday seasons, and don'tforget to thank God for your "WonderfulLife!"

When ChuckMorris

asked me toproduce this showI was simplydelighted. It’s AWonderful Lifehas been one ofmy favoritemovies since Iwas a child. One

of my fondest memories is my favoritecousin and I watching this show onNew Year’s Eve. It went off at midnightand we were so moved by it we criedlike the silly girls we were. To me thismovie is the epitome of Christmas andall it stands for. I believe we should bewilling to help each other. Not only onChristmas, but all year long. Also, wereally don’t know how much we affecteach others lives. Throughdiscouragement comes encouragementthroughout this show. My Christmaswish is that everyone who sees theshow takes a little bit of George Baileyhome with you. I also believe we haveangels among us everyday in thedisguise as friends. True friends arepriceless and will love you despiteyourself. I would also like to take thisopportunity to thank Wendell Barnes forallowing me to be a part of the show as

well as Ginger McClure. It has been ajoy and honor to work with and get toknow both of them. Thank you somuch Wendell and Ginger and I loveyou! I would also like to thank TinaBrinson, Naomi Williams, Allison Cox,Megan Keeting, Allison Hunter andMary Ortwein. These people havebeen my guardian angels. Each oneholds a special place in my heart.Thank you all for the support andfriendship you have given. I love you tothe MOON and back. Last, but not least I would like tothank my wonderful husband and myprecious granddaughter. When onemember of the family takes on a taskthe rest of the family usually getsinvolved and mine have. Tommy hashelped me with props, wardrobe andideas for other things. Kelsie took onthe task of hair and makeup with thehelp of another precious friend, PamShoemaker. See I told you eachperson touches another person. Thank you all for coming to our show.My prayer for you is to get a specialblessing. Sit back and enjoy It’s AWonderful Life; because it truly is.

This past year, the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation was created to help securefunding to restore the DeSoto Theatre to its former splendor. With assistance from the FoxTheatre Institute, the tireless work of many volunteers and generous donations from ourmembers and friends, the rehabilitation process has begun with the repair of the ornateplasterwork in the vestibule and the complete remodeling of the upstairs meeting rooms.Although much has been done, many more restoration projects are needed.

here at RLT. He is eager and honoredto be back into local theatre and a partof the cast and crew of It's a WonderfulLife! He has enjoyed working withWendell, Elaine, Tommy, Ginger andTherese plus the entire cast and crewand the so many new and helpful faceswith The Rome Little Theatre. Bob Moulard (Clarence Odbody)This man Moulard is the one thingshappen to. I know him from his mail(mostly bills and dunning letters), oldphotographs, and from those arch RLTbios which he thinks are a scream. Ilike cheap guitars, the literature ofDon Marquis, the music of FrankZappa and so does Moulard, but in avain, meretricious way which he turnsinto the attributes of a ham actor, heenters and leaves my life as hepleases. He has no tact, no subtlety,no solicitude. He is a slob; I have readreports to the effect that he stinks. Ihave begged him to show someconsideration for me, after all I allowmyself to go on living so he maycontinue his music (hah!), his acting(HAH!), his lusts and vices. I wouldexaggerate to say ours is a hostilerelationship; I must confess he hasdone some decent work every now andagain, but it belongs to neither of us;rather it belongs to the script, to thescore, and to tradition. I have tried tofree myself from him but the effortbinds me to him the stronger. Thus mylife becomes flight and evasion. I loseeverything to thieves, to the void and tohim. I do not know which of us haswritten this.
