Our inventory has been moved from the Dean St.building to our new rental building in West Rome. That was a huge job, involving weeding out piecesthat were sold at a yard sale (thanks, Tiff) and wemade about $150 on them. Lots of things just had togo into the dumpster (thanks Evans family) and therest were moved by huge truck (thanks Coni Carey &Southeastern Mills) to the building we're renting fromAndrew Wardlaw. Tiff spent several days workingwith volunteers and hired help to fill the dumpster and

load the truck, and then he closed up the Dean St.building. We now have a large, dry space for setpieces & props. We give a heartfelt THANK YOU toall who helped us get there.

Best Wishes go out to RLT members, Heather Brandand Savannah (Ruth) Powers, as they take on theirreal life roles as new moms this season. Get Wellwishes continue for members Dave Willis, who spentseveral days in the hospital, and Ben Peck, who hadfoot surgery.

Congratulations, Cardie McClure, on being votedMost Talented Senior at Model High, Julia Chambers,on being chosen as Employee of the Year atArmuchee Middle School. We're proud of you,Ladies!!! H o Ho Ho! After you have enjoyed our production of Charles Dick-ens’ immortal classic “A Christmas Carol,” you should be in the ap-

propriate spirit now to enjoy other Christmas delights and other showsbeyond the RLT. Some are within an hour’s drive, and some are in themetro area, and some are even further “beyond.” So warm up a cup ofhot wassail or plum pudding, and travel with me to seek out other theatreopportunities “Beyond the RLT!”

Here in Rome, our own Roman Award-winning Richard Bristow is repris-ing his “Uh Oh! Here Comes Christmas!,” this time using his students atBerry. I saw this Christmas revue last year when Richard was still atShorter, and now you can enjoy it in a new community! It’s a series ofholiday skits based on the writings of Robert Fulghum, the author of “All IReally Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, “ and it’s a delight frombeginning to end. The show opens Thursday, Dec. 6th at 7:30 p.m. andruns nightly through Sat., Dec. 8th and Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2:00 p.m. Forreservations and more information, call the Berry College Theatre Compa-ny at 706-236-2263. In other theatre news, the Triple Threat Arts Compa-ny will be presenting “The Christmas Spirit” in their new home at MountBerry Square Mall on Dec. 14th and 15th. Log on to their web site,www.triplethreatartscompany.com for exact times, for more informationand to make reservations. Remember that the live radio production of“It’s A Wonderful Life” sponsored by WLAQ and directed by Virginia Mc-Chesney, will be presented live at RLT on Dec. 16 (and possibly again onDec. 23,) and you can also hear it live on WLAQ and it will be rebroadcaston WLAQ on Christmas Eve. Check the RLT website for exact detailsand times. Christmas concerts also abound this month. “ROME for theHolidays” will host its annual concert with the Northwest Georgia Windsand the Three Rivers Singers (did you know “R.O.M.E.” stands forRome’s Own Music Ensembles?) in a free Christmas concert on Wednes-day, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rome City Auditorium. On Dec. 18th at7:30 p.m., the Three Rivers Singers will present “Christmas Memories,”their annual free concert at the main chapel on the Berry College campus.Donations to both of these organizations are always encouraged.

At the nearby Pumphouse Players’ venue, the Legion Theatre in Carters-ville, PHP will be presenting the stage version of the holiday favorite, “AChristmas Story,” Nov. 30th-Dec. 9th at 8:00 p.m. each evening. The hilari-ous British farce, “Run for Your Wife” is next up for PHP, running Jan.25th-Feb. 2nd. More information is available atwww.pumphouseplayers.com. Calhoun Little Theatre will be presenting“It’s A Wonderful Life—A Live Radio Play,” Nov. 29th-Dec. 1st at 7:00 andDec. 2nd at 2:30. More information is available there atwww.harrisartscenter.com and you can make reservations online. Notsure if this is the same script that RLT/WLAQ is using or not.

All of which brings us to the always anticipated schedule at the FabulousFox Theatre on Peachtree. First up is the return of the family favorite,“Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” visiting the Fox again from Nov. 27th-Dec. 2nd, so hurry if you want to see this. Of course, the Atlanta Ballet’ssumptuous production of “The Nutcracker” is onstage most of the month, and Christmas has really not arrived if you don’t see this. It will run Dec.7th-26th. Jan. 15th-20th “Blue Man Group” returns, and if you have neverseen these three blue guys in a show of light and color, including giganticballs bouncing out into the audience, you have missed a real treat. Thisshow has been running in New York for over two decades! What are youwaiting for? Jan. 25th-31st the rescheduled production of the twelve TonyAward-winning hilarious musical, “The Producers,” will finally play the Foxagain, so don’t miss it this time! (It’s a little too racy for the little ones.)

February 5th-10th “Flashdance the Musical,” based on the movie, willplay in Atlanta for the first time. And for all you dance fans, The AlvinAiley American Dance Theatre will make their annual pilgrimage to theFox Feb. 14th-17th, doing some classic pieces as well as somethingnew. How’s that for a lot to look forward to!?! More information is atwww.foxtheatre.org.

At the Woodruff Arts Center a little further north on Peachtree, anotherannual holiday tradition in Atlanta is the Alliance Theatre Company pro-duction of “A Christmas Carol” on the Alliance Stage. For the past 23years, the Alliance has presented one of the most glorious holidaytreats you can imagine. The show this year opened Nov. 23rd and isrunning now through Dec. 23rd. This is another show that I have to see

every year just to feel that Christmas is really here. An additional holidayshow at the Alliance Hertz Stage this year is a new entry, “Holidays withthe Chalks,” a musical about a country and western sister act and theirtrials and tribulations at Christmas time. This show opens Nov. 30th andruns through Dec. 23rd, and is sure to be a hot ticket in this smaller venue, transformed into a honky tonk for the holidays. Next up Jan. 13th-Feb.10th, the Tony-nominee new play, “Good People” will grace the main-stage. This funny but fierce drama is set in the south of Boston and is allabout family and making your way out, and is written by one of today’shottest new playwrights, David Lindsay-Abaire. And the next play on theHertz Stage, Feb. 1st-24th is “Bike America,” about a cross-country bicycletrip and the lessons learned along the way. Information about all of theseproductions can be found at www.alliancetheatre.org.

There’s always something exciting going on at the New American Shake-speare Tavern, just a few blocks south of the Woodruff Arts Center onPeachtree. Nov. 29th-Dec. 23rd, the NAST will present their own versionof “Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.” (What a good idea for the holi-days!) This will be followed Jan. 3rd-27th by Shakespeare’s magical clas-sic, “The Tempest,” and then Jan. 31st-March 3rd will see the 13th

anniversary of their annual February show, “Romeo and Juliet.” Informa-tion can be found at www.shakespearetavern.com.

I’m so excited about seeing a new Christmas show, a musical version ofthe O. Henry classic story, called “The Gifts of the Magi.” (yes, there is an“s” in the title of the musical!) This show opens on Nov. 29th and will runthrough Dec. 23rd (big surprise there!) and will star many of Atlanta’s bestmusical theatre talents. Jan. 10th-13th there is a one-woman slam poetryperformance called “Harabel” at Theatrical Outfit. This is the story of thejourney of a woman from the war-torn Balkans to the American South, and stars Jonida Beqo, performing as Gypsee Yo . Jan. 30th-Feb. 24th Iam very excited to see a production of “Fly,” a drama about the TuskegeeAirmen, or the African-American Air Corps fighters in World War II. Infor-mation about these three shows can be found at www.theatricaloutfit.org.

The always busy Horizon Theatre in Little Five Points is presenting itsusual two Christmas treats once again this year. For the kiddies, there isthe musical “Madeline’s Christmas,” based on the popular book series byLudwig Bemelmans, running Dec. 8th-30th. This is the 5th year for this pro-duction. For the adults, the sarcastic David Sedaris play about a Macy’self, “The Santaland Diaries,” is running at the Horizon for its 14th year, nowthrough Dec. 30th. This show is not for the kiddies so leave them athome! More information about both of these shows is atwww.horizontheatre.com. The Horizon will be announcing their new 2013season soon so keep checking the website.

Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company is now presenting KatoriHall’s recent Broadway play, “The Mountaintop,” through Dec. 16th. Thisplay concerns Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s last night in the motel in Mem-phis prior to his assassination, and his conversational encounter with acleaning lady who just might be the Angel of Death. The play will be per-formed in the new Southwest Arts Center on New Hope Road. Feb. 12th-March 10th will be their next production, August Wilson’s “Two Trains Run-ning,” directed by LaTanya Richardson Jackson (Samuel L.’s wife--heplayed MLK in “The Mountaintop” on Broadway; both of whom I was hon-ored to share the stage with at the Alliance Theatre in “Purlie” in 1973.)More information about both productions is at www.truecolorstheatre.org.

Our favorite Atlanta Lyric Theatre at the StrandTheatre in Marietta is presenting one of our favorite Irving Berlin musicalsfor the holidays, the stage version of “White Christmas” Dec. 7th-23rd (whydoes that date keep sounding familiar? Perhaps because it is the Sundaybefore Christmas???) There are so many hit songs from this show, includ-ing the title tune, that you will sing along with every one, presented in amost professional and fun way by the wonderful musical theatre actors atthe Lyric. Coming up next at the Lyric is “Beehive—the Musical,” but moreabout that in the next newsletter. The spot to get info iswww.atlantalyrictheatre.com. And if you’ve never seen the second in theSanders family trilogy, “A Sanders Family Christmas,” it will once again bepresented at the Strand Nov. 29th-Dec. 1st and again Dec. 27th-30th. Infor-mation about that show can be found at www.earlsmithstrand.org.

The gorgeous Cobb Energy Centre, also in Marietta, is decked out for theholidays, and they are hosting a national tour of “West Side Story” Dec.13th-16th. And the Atlanta Ballet will be presenting “Dracula” and “Cinderel-la” Feb. 8th-16th. Information about these great events is atwww.cobbenergycentre.com.

Georgia Shakespeare Festival at the Conant Performing Arts Center atOglethorpe University is down until May, but the good news is that they willhave a season in 2013 and they appear to be back to stay! Look for newsin future newsletters.

A little further out in Lawrenceville is another of my favorite venues, thebeautiful and intimate Aurora Theatre downtown. They are currently run-ning the 2012 version of their annual “Christmas Canteen” now throughDec. 23rd, in its 17th year! Founder Anthony Rodriguez will be presentinghis one-man version of “A Christmas Carol” in the Studio Theatre Nov. 29th-Dec. 16th for the fifth year. Jan. 17th-Feb. 10th will be the Aurora’s main-stage next production, “Bob!,” a Georgia premiere of a comedy about oneman’s dream to be great. Information about all of these shows can befound at www.auroratheatre.com.

A little further northeast in Dahlonega, the reorganized Holly Theater isback up and running, and will be presenting “The Odd Couple—FemaleVersion,” January 11th-20th. Might be fun to see how this production com-pares to ours of a few years ago. Check it out at www.hollytheater.com(don’t forget that this is one of the few places that spell “theater” the non-British way!) Gainesville Theatre Alliance will be producing two plays inFebruary, “A Raisin in the Sun” and “She Loves Me,” and details will followin the next newsletter. The web site is www.gta.gsu.edu.

And of course I do not want to forget my two favorite out of state venues. The beautiful Greenville Little Theatre is presenting their Christmas show,“It’s A Wonderful Life,” Dec. 7th-16th. Their next show, “Sherlock Holmesand the Case of the Jersey Lily,” will follow in February, and details will bein the next newsletter. If you can’t wait to find out, visit them atwww.greenevillelittletheatre.org.

Reba and I were so pleased to spend our fall break at our favorite Cumber-land County Playhouse in Crossville, TN. It’s been several years since wehave been there—too long—but we managed to see three out of the fourshows they were running that week: “Big River,” “Backwards in Heels—theGinger Musical,” and “Golden Boy of the Blue Ridge,” the new musical byRoman Cara Reichel and her husband Pete Mills. I actually talked to themboth on the phone the next weekend when they were here in Rome visitingCara’s mother Sharon before they returned to New York after seeing theirshow at CCP. It was so funny and fun and I wish all of you could haveseen it too. Playing now at CCP, and a perfect weekend or weekday get-away during the holidays: now through Dec. 22, “A Sanders Family Christ-mas;” now through Dec. 23rd, “Joseph and the Amazing TechnicolorDreamcoat,” (as good as RLT’s?—you decide!;)Dec. 14-15, “Facing theFuture,” a new teen cabaret . As 2012 winds down, they have already an-nounced the shows they will be doing next year, but the season is not set.So far we know they will be doing “Ring of Fire,” the musical story of John-ny Cash in August. Keep checking the website at www.ccplayhouse.comas they finalize their schedule.

I hope you have the merriest of holiday seasons. How can you not be inthe spirit with all of these wonderful Christmas shows at and “Beyond theRLT!” «
