t a time when the global economic crisis has brought a number of challenges for the retail and leisure sectors, the Global RLI

Awards 2011 showcased some of the best projects the world has seen over the last 18 months.

Guests enjoyed a spectacular gala dinner and the coveted awards ceremony in the museum’s grand Central Hall. Entertainment was provided in the form of highlights from the superb hit West End musical, Saturday Night Fever, and there was of

course that all-important opportunity to network with friends, colleagues and new business acquaintances from across the globe.

In her opening speech, RLI Publisher Jayne Rafter said: “This is an industry that continually asks questions, setting new innovative benchmarks in quality and expectations. Times may be hard but the opportunities are there and tonight we present just a small selection of those companies that have the vision to achieve.”

The night started with a champagne

reception and canapés in the museum’s Waterhouse Way where the cream of the retail and leisure industries mingled. The guests were then called into the Great Hall for dinner, entertainment and, of course, the main event.

This year’s 18 categories recognised the crème de la crème of the retail and leisure industry, rewarding innovation, vision, sustainability, design and construction.

RLI’s prestigious judging panel consisted of international judges from around the world who were asked to vote for the most worthy winners. Points were so close between some of the fi nalists, RLI decided to award six Highly Commended certifi cates on the night. The winners of the awards were presented with impressive gold trophies.

But none of this would have been possible without the support of our sponsors – Patton Fit-Out, Barlows, DDG, Aedas, First Christmas, Broadway Malyan, Build-A-Bear Workshop, St David’s Partnership, Al-Futtaim Group Real Estate, Sonae Sierra, McArthurGlen Group, Red, Coverpoint Consultancy, Design International, Overbury, National Association of Shopfi tters, HCJ Retail and ISG.

Once again the evening was presented by Sky News Presenter Lucy Alexander, who was also present at the fi rst Global RLI Awards six years ago and has professionally guided proceedings every year since.

Maxine Clark, Founder and Chief Executive Bear at Build-A-Bear Workshop, said: “The RLI awards recognise the stars of the retail leisure business internationally. It is terrifi c to look at what is thriving and what is new and see retail evolving to new heights where the customer can engage and enjoy while shopping. Thank you RLI for creating this event to enjoy what is good in our industry!”

Joseph Wan, Chief Executive of Harvey Nichols, commented: “I was delighted to attend this year’s Global RLI Awards dinner. RLI have rightly earned the respect of the international retail industry for their recognition of innovation in design which plays such a critical part in the environment of today’s retailers worldwide. At a time when online shopping is growing faster than bricks and mortar, RLI are playing a much valued role in supporting exceptional retailers.”

Teresa Tideman, Joint Managing Director of The Disney Store Europe, said: “What a magical evening! With a great venue and great entertainment, it was an evening the Disney Store Team won’t forget in a hurry.”

Neil van den Dungen, Head of Property, Facilities and Procurement at NIKE UK, added: “Thanks for a very enjoyable evening. It was really well run and a great advert for RLI!”

Filipa Fernandes, Head of Research and Innovation at SES Spar European Shopping Centers, said: “The RLI Awards evening was just wonderful. I attend conferences and dinners around the world and I have to say that RLI Awards night is one of the best that I have attended. Congratulations!”
