THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH

Page 3: RIVERSIDE THEATRE 2013 SEASON BROCHURE

On the 27th February, 1988, Prime Minister Bob Hawke opened Riverside Theatres. A quarter of a century on and many thousands of shows and millions of patrons later, Riverside continues to entertain and delight the people of Parramatta and Sydney.

To celebrate 25 years we have put together an anniversary season that features music, dance, glamour and romance performed by Australia’s best musical theatre and dance artists. This year you can see great dramas by Shakespeare and Bernard Shaw, an Australian classic of one man’s memories of war on a Women’s Weekly Cherry Blossom Cruise, recent contemporary works lifting the lid on boxing and local government as well as hilarious (and sometimes black) comedies about the perils of parties and internet dating. We also have old favourites like The Wharf Revue, international works performed by artists from Zimbabwe and a world premiere and celebration of African women’s stories of survival and new beginnings in Australia. And much, much more.

Save by purchasing a season package, all at affordable prices. Be our silver lining by joining us at the great shows that make up Riverside’s 2013 Silver Anniversary Season. We look forward to welcoming you. ROBERT LOvE CAMiLLA ROUNTREEDiRECTOR PRODUCERRivERSiDE THEATRES RivERSiDE PRODUCTiONS

“It’s the strangest thing. No longer being able to tell what is the past and what is the present. It seems that events that took place only minutes ago are now being erased while memories I have been able to hold at bay for decades suddenly come rushing towards me.”

Through the eyes of three generations, Sundowner tells the story of so many Australian families. If a loved one starts to lose their memories, how can we hold onto them?

Starring Helen Morse (The Eye Of The Storm, A Town Like Alice, Picnic At Hanging Rock) and featuring the Tivoli Lovelies, Sundowner blends dance, drama and original composition to reflect the experiences and frustrations of younger onset dementia.

Tackling a “taboo” subject that is rarely seen on stage, KAGE has created a critically acclaimed production that is tender, light in touch and ultimately uplifting. This is a story of love: love of family, love of history and love of life.

Have no doubt, this production is one that should go right to the top of your list of “must sees” this year.

Imagine an African duo of actors with incredible comedic skill taking on Shakespeare, and you will get some idea of how absolutely delightful these productions of Hamlet (Kupenga Kwa Hamlet) and Two Gentlemen of Verona (Vakomana Vaviri Ve Zimbabwe), which featured at the World Shakespeare Fes-tival, are to watch. Two Gents are experts in reinterpretation: taking and reshap-ing classic European drama and presenting it through the eyes of Zimbabwe.

African actors, Chikura and Munyevu, who are based in London, are more than just a comic turn; they are an experienced and highly sophisticated pair of performers with a great mastery of timing and contrast, switching effortlessly from male to female and back again, and from slapstick to pain and tragedy.

Together they explore the issues and sense of displacement felt by Shake-speare’s characters and relate it to their own experiences as black men in a white world. By doing so, the actors create a unique series of productions that have a broad, loud, triumphantly energetic “township” style.

In addition to Shakespeare, Two Gents present a self-written show, Magetsi, which shows a revolving disc of Zimbabwean characters and situations to provide a lens for the consideration of “home” and what it means to be a “diasporan” returning to your own country. Select to see one or all three of these critically-acclaimed, international productions.

This deliciously funny, laugh-out-loud black comedy is filled with instantly recognisable characters, situations and scenarios that keep the surprises coming until the very end.

Henri Szeps stars as Ron Patterson, a gruff, well ordered, quintessentially Aussie family man who is convinced he is dying in this “thigh-slapping” black comedy which gives the word “family” a whole new perspective and meaning.

In a magnanimous gesture of loving finality, he hosts a party, giving his wife and children the chance to spend a few last quality moments as a family.

Almost immediately we are plunged into a humorous night of family squabbles, jealousies and competition where a few home truths are disclosed and episodes lurch between poignant and outrageous. The gathering brings about some urgent confessions, a surprise “wedding” and a visit from the undertaker.

This double-bill of very accessible and playful contemporary dance showcases works from two of Australia’s shining examples of contemporary dance; Tanja Liedtke’s Enter Twilight and the world premiere season of Byron Perry’s Light Entertainment.

Choreographed for the company in 2004, Liedtke’s work examines the balance between opposites; light and dark, virtuous and evil. An extraordinary talent whose life was tragically cut short, Liedtke was destined to follow in the footsteps of Tasdance Patron, Graeme Murphy AO, as the next Artistic Director of Sydney Dance Company. Inclusion of Liedtke’s work in our 2013 program honours her ongoing positive influence on dance in Australia.

Taking an alternative interpretation, award-winning choreographer Perry explores other connotations of “light”, flipping between dry and scientific, magic and mystical, frivolous, playful and entertaining. Playing with the theatricality and multiplicity of meanings, Perry’s work illuminates the astonishing talents of the Tasdance ensemble.

This is a brilliant production from the masters at Sydney Theatre Company.

Vivie Warren is an optimistic young bluestocking working her way towards social independence and a successful career when she makes a discovery that rocks her world: her comfortable upbringing and expensive education were bankrolled by her mother Kitty’s unorthodox profession.

With his verbal mastery and devilish wit, the legendary playwright George Bernard Shaw dissects the precarious and perplexing bond between mother and daughter, as well as the thorny issues of class and privilege and the finer points of moral relativism.

Although written in 1893, Mrs Warren’s Profession was not given a public performance in London until 1925, having been banned for its frank discussion of a taboo topic - but also, one suspects, for its forthright challenge of the Victorian status quo regarding the right of women to pursue social and financial independence.

Sarah Giles (STC 2011 Richard Wherrett Fellow) directs the much-loved Helen Thomson (The Splinter, Under Milk Wood, In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play) and newcomer Lizzie Schebesta in a play that sparkles with a vitality and wit belying its 120 years.

“A fabulous, fast-paced production that is fresh and vibrant – it is almost as if we have never seen this classic play before.”

Arts Hub Review

Theatre critics are raving about this gripping, thrilling and contemporary version of Shakespeare’s classic tale of power, politics, madness and corruption.

In a world of accidental judgements and casual slaughters, where everyone dies but no-one is permitted to grieve, a young man speaks for us all by daring to speak for himself.

Director Damien Ryan brings his 15 years of intensive experience with this great story to an inspiring and passionate production, described by Sydney critics as one of the finest visions of Hamlet in recent times. With Lindsay Farris’ extraordinary performance at its heart, this production explores loyalty and faithlessness, madness and freedom, and the debts children owe to their parents.

Riverside is proud to present this clear, insightful and imaginative piece of classic theatre that brings great integrity to the text and the characters.

Yarrie grew up in a camp in Guinea. She is doing her HSC. Aminata is from Sierra Leone. She is an ambassador for the UNHCR. Big Mama Rosemary is from Kenya. She is a community leader and she knows how to live. Yordy was a child soldier. Now she’s the mother of four amazing kids. They are one half of The Baulkham Hills African Ladies Troupe and they would like to welcome you into their worlds.

These marvellous women turn their extraordinary and harrowing stories of survival into a joyous theatre of humanity. With the help of four other African women – singers and dancers and actors – the ladies are going to take this great opportunity to be who they want, say what they want, and become as amazing as they can. This is how they celebrate a new beginning in a land of refuge.

The Baulkham Hills African Ladies Troupe is a celebration of women, human rights, laughter and resilience. With a bit of sage advice on hair care.

Love plays a major role in all our lives, but as Shakespeare knew all too well, does not always guarantee a fairy-tale ending.

Set across three different eras, and telling three different versions of events, Expressions Dance Company turns the classic story of Romeo and Juliet on its head, cutting to the essence of what is real, human and inevitable.

Winner of Outstanding Achievement in Choreography at the 2012 Australian Dance Awards, R&J reinforces the notion that love – no matter what age you are, or what era you live in – is eternal, and its power, everlasting.

With music composed by John Babbage and recorded by prolific music ensemble Topology, R&J celebrates contemporary performance at its most bold and powerful.

“For a night of stunning visuals, live music, clever themes and a bit of everybody’s favourite Shakespeare play thrown in, Expressions Dance Company’s R&J is perfect entertainment” Bris Tix.

Two of Australia’s rising stars of musical theatre transport you to a world of glamour, wit and elegance in a timeless musical which has been acclaimed throughout the world.

Noël Coward and Gertrude Lawrence formed a legendary on and off stage partnership. They looked rich, they were elegant; they sang, they danced, they made jokes through clenched cigarette holders. They were impeccable.

James Millar (Grey Gardens, Oklahoma, Jerry Springer: The Opera) returns from London to play Noël Coward and is joined by Lucy Maunder (Dr Zhivago, The Rocky Horror Show, Jekyll and Hyde). Under the direction of showbiz legend Nancye Hayes, they take a contemporary look at two of the 20th century’s greatest stage personalities and the era they helped to define.

Featuring songs, sketches and scenes from Coward’s own works, diary excerpts and letters between the two, Noël and Gertie is highly entertaining, strangely familiar and surprisingly touching. If you love musical theatre, celebrity, gossip, glamour, the plays of Noël Coward; if you love shows like Downton Abbey, The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, Poirot or Mary Poppins, then you’ll love Noël and Gertie - a glittering evening of delight, wit, song and dance.

It had everything – sex, deception, con men, clandestine meetings in car parks, phone taps, dirty deals and death threats. There was even “the table of knowledge’’, a plastic table outside a kebab shop in Wollongong where dodgy deals were struck. This is the gripping true story about the ICAC investigation into the Wollongong City Council.

version 1.0, renowned for making witty and incisive theatre that engages with contemporary political and social issues, turns its forensic theatrical vision onto this scandal to produce a hilarious and compelling interrogation of power, corruption and good governance in contemporary Australia.

The Table of Knowledge tells a universal story based on real events. Scrutinising the transcripts of the ICAC Inquiry, version 1.0 developed the script almost entirely from the actual words of the central characters, exposing sexual obsessions, envelopes full of cash, and a secret cabal of powerful men and one woman who met regularly around the table of knowledge. The resultant scandal culminated with the sacking of the entire Council.

A big production with big hair and an even bigger heart – it’s HAIRSPRAY!

It’s 1962, the ‘50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion - to dance. But can a trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the programme’s reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her ‘do?

Hairspray stars Australian entertainment legend JON ENGLISH in the role of Edna Turnblad. Jon has starred in musicals, drama and comedy, released 15 albums, written musicals and scores for film and television, as well as touring internationally with his band.

Winning over 30 major awards worldwide and acclaimed as “the musical with everything”, the whole family will love HAIRSPRAY.

It’s back! Their mission, should they choose to accept it: make Australia’s political landscape funnier than it already is.

The mighty and the ridiculous will duck for cover as The Wharf Revue team swoops in for another go at poking politics and popular culture in the eye with its carefully sharpened satire stick.

Written by Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott, The Wharf Revue has been a Sydney institution for more than a decade, attracting a large and loyal band of fans over the years, including journalist/commentator Bob Ellis, who describes the show as a “vast exuberant soul-altering experience”. Even those at the pointy end of the stick are known to sneak into the audience.

They sing, they dance, they wear ridiculous costumes and sometimes even speak in tongues, all in glorious service of the comic cause. If the looming federal election fails to go your way you can depend on one good news story: the provision of plenty of new material for these talented satirists.

Immerse yourself in this uncompromising production set in the surrounds of a boxing gym, complete with the menthol aroma of anti-inflammatory lotion and newspaper clippings of sweat-drenched men adorning the walls. This is a place of dreaming – dreams of escape, of glory, of a better life. The stakes are high. Everyone wants to be special; we all have something to prove; and the only thing that’s certain – no matter how high you fly, you will eventually lose.

Using a combination of headphone-verbatim, audio-scripting and intense physical training, I’m Your Man explores notions of masculinity, courage and respect. Actors speak their lines directly from carefully edited original recordings from some of Australia’s most notable boxers. The dreams of glory or escape are real. No ordinary slice of life, this is fuelled-up, high-stakes theatre, up-close in this intimate venue - and with truly original voices.

The audience follows a high-profile professional boxer through his preparation for a world title fight. Along the way we meet some extraordinary personalities - past legends and failed contenders whose lives have been irreversibly changed by the fight game.

This production was a stand-out performance in last year’s Sydney Festival. Riverside is proud to bring it home to its roots in Western Sydney.

P.S. The seven boxers whose lives are glimpsed in I’m Your Man are Billy ‘The Kid’ Dib, Wale ‘Lucky Boy’ Omotoso, Gus Mercurio, Jeff Fenech, Tony Mundine, Wally Carr and the mysterious CJ.

CANDY mANThis year, Riverside offers you a high energy, sophisticated song & dance experience with all the glamour and style of a 1950’s retro Las Vegas style night club.

Musical theatre star Wayne Scott Kermond celebrates the music of the ultimate entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. in this award-winning show featuring an eight piece big band, a cast of Australia’s best singers, dancers and a choir.

Candy Man takes the audience on a journey, paralleled to Wayne’s own, celebrating the feel-good essence, creativity and talent of the song & dance man. Set amongst Las Vegas nightclubs, vaudeville and concert halls, musicals, film and television, Candy Man delivers all the joys of showbiz entertainment.

Candy Man has all the songs that audiences around the world have sung along with including, “Mr Bojangles”, “Singin’ in the Rain”, “Rhythm of Life”, “What Kind of Fool Am I”, “Hey There”, “The Candy Man” and many more.

“A brilliant evening of Capital E entertainment. An outstanding hand-picked dance troupe, a fabulous orchestra that keeps the joint jumping and Kermond, that rare endangered species - a song and dance man, a guy who can keep you entertained all night.” The Sunday Mail

From the same company who brought us the hugely successful Angela’s Kitchen comes the next “must see” production, the surreal comic tragedy The Floating World. Sam Strong returns to the Griffin fold, to direct this darkly comedic Australian classic. Not to be missed.

Les and Irene are celebrating their wedding anniversary. Gifted with the holiday of a lifetime, they set sail on the Women’s Weekly Cherry Blossom Cruise bound for the cultural mysteries of Japan. But amongst the sun hats, theme nights and piña coladas Les, a former WWII prisoner of war, soon finds himself confronted by old diggers, enemies and tormented memories. As the cruise ship floats closer towards its destination, Les’ grip on reality floats ever further away.

An electrifying descent into one man’s wartime nightmare, The Floating World is a resonating tale of the long-lasting effects of war and the ugly world of xenophobic Australia.

Following the success of his sold-out productions of Speaking in Tongues and The Boys, Sam Strong returns to the Griffin fold to direct this neglected Australian classic, last staged at the Stables in 1975 and heralded as an “unruly masterpiece”.
