The North Devon Ramblers would like to in-vite anyone and everyone to join them for one of their six FREE ‘Festival’ walks over Christmas and the New Year, from three to eight miles, on 22nd, 27th, 30th, 31st December and 2nd and 5th. Group Chairman, Joan Long said, “For thirty years Ramblers has hosted a Winter Walking Festival. During that time Ramblers groups throughout the UK have welcomed hundreds of thousands of people out into the countryside, to enjoy walks led by expert local volunteers.” Joan added, “We realise that some people find Christ-mas to be a difficult time when they feel isolated and lonely and wish only to return to ‘normality’. We would like to extend a special invitation to an-yone who is on their own to join us for a walk. Everyone is very friendly and you will receive a warm welcome. Do make our festival a time to take your first steps towards a new beginning, whilst benefitting from the physical and mental well-being that walking brings.” For times see the local events columns. For further information con-tact Joan on 01271 376274 or Angela on 07720 203737 or visit www.ramblers.org.uk/north-devon

Barnstaple and South Molton Memory Cafés The Barnstaple and S Molton Memory Cafés are bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to re-ceive cash awards. Shoppers are invited to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. The Barnstaple and South Molton Memory Cafés is one of the groups on the shortlist! The Memory Cafes support more than 60 local men and women living with dementia. The Barn-staple Cafe meets on the first and third Fridays at the Library and the South Molton Café meets on the second Thursday in the Assembly Rooms. They provide a friendly and fun environment for people with dementia and their families.

One answer to loneliness One answer to the increasing problem of loneli-ness is to join the U3A which has a flourishing group in South Molton. Many of our members live alone but U3A gives them the opportunity to go to a monthly coffee morning, a weekly Sunday lunch and take part in all manner of activities from scrabble to patchwork, Shakespeare to jazz, ambling to skittles. We also have theatre and gar-den visits throughout the year. For more infor-mation we have leaflets in the library, a website, www.southmolton u3a.co.uk or just give the sec-retary a ring on 01769 574637.

We'd love to meet you.

North Devon Parish Boundaries N Devon Council is carrying out a consultation to tidy up some parish boundaries to bring them in line with District ward boundaries following a re-view last year. The areas affected are: Mill on the Mole, S Molton; Westacott, Landkey; Mount Sandford Green, Landkey. As well as this, follow-ing representations during a previous consulta-tion, they are consulting on a proposal to move Gunn from Swimbridge to Goodleigh parish. You can find out more about the consultation and have your say on the council website www.north devon.gov.uk/consultations before 2nd January.

A stark warning There is a lot of demand in Devon for care and support for people living in their own homes. But there are too few people working in the profes-sion, so meeting that demand is really difficult at times. Demand for care always increases in win-ter. We're doing a lot of things to prepare for it. We want to avoid people going to hospital with preventable complaints, or to return home quickly after treatment. But we're really concerned about staffing levels, and whether care organisations have sufficient care workers to meet demand. We'd like more people to consider careers in care, and especially in the domiciliary care sec-tor. Please find out what the opportunities are at www.proudtocaredevon.org.uk

Celebrating 10 years of the Amory Centre in South Molton

The Amory Centre building on East Street was converted into a ‘one stop shop’ in 2008 for local people to get advice and information on the ser-vices offered by N Devon Council and S Molton Town Council as well as housing a brand new Devon County Council library. The £1m project was funded by all three councils in an innovative partnership. As the town has grown, the Town Council has encouraged local groups and nation-al agencies like the Citizens Advice Bureau to use the building too. The Library hosts regular events and community based projects which has encouraged use of the centre. The occasion was marked with a cake cutting by three original members of staff all still working at the centre 10 years on. A cake sale was held in aid of the CAB and a Hidden Histories talk and presentation was being given by Beaford Arts focusing on S Molton and the surrounding area. A memories book has also been placed in the Library so that people can share their memories of the Library, past and present.

Your local services are being held at: Parish Church, Chulmleigh on Monday 3rd De-cember at 6.30pm Methodist Church, South Molton on Wednesday 12th December at 7pm Light Up a Life offers us all the opportunity to honour the memory of loved ones, together with many others. It helps us realise we are not alone in missing someone special at this time of year. If you cannot attend a Light Up a Life service but would still like to be part of this season of re-membrance, you can take part in the appeal by giving North Devon Hospice the name of your loved one when making a donation online at www.north devonhospice.org.uk or phoning the Light Up A Life team on 01271 347232. By making a donation to either Hospice you will make a difference to those needing our care to-day and into the future.

Garden waste collections during winter Residents signed up to N Devon Council’s gar-den waste collection service are reminded that their green bins will be emptied every four weeks rather than fortnightly in December and January. Collections are less frequent during this period to account for the reduction in garden waste pro-duced over the winter months. Lead member for the Environment, Councillor Rodney Cann says: “Last year we went to four-weekly collections in November, but we have listened to our custom-ers and will continue to collect fortnightly until De-cember”. For more information and to check your collection dates online, see www. northdevon.gov.uk/collectiondates.

Devon Grants Fund Make a difference in your community. Have you got an idea? The Community Grants Fund is an initiative to support people like you in setting up something to help people develop community-driven initiatives which support and empower peo-ple to have greater choice and control over their health and care by supporting them to increase their knowledge or skills or to support improved confidence and motivation. Grants of up to £300 are available. Schemes should benefit a group of people rather than an individual and they should benefit people living within an area of Devon. You do not need to be a constituted group or charity to apply for this grant. The closing date for applications is Thursday 31st January 2019. If you need support with your appli-cation please contact [email protected]. We expect projects to be able to show they have made a difference within 6 months. If you have any questions, or suggestions, please contact: [email protected] 01626 326130.
