He could have been talking about the perspective from which students will view his artwork as they exit the library, but he was talking about the paint- ing itself. The painting, “View of the Harlem River,” is based on the view of University Heights from Tar- get’s rooftop parking lot in Marble Hill. It is one of 22 he created for Bronx Community College’s new $80 million building, which opened with school in September. The collection is called A Sense of Place and there was nobody better to create that sense than Bronx-born-and-raised Mr. Hauben. In 2008, Bronx Community College commis- sioned him — the only Bronxite out of four finalists competing for the job — to create the murals. It was not made official for two years, but in May 2010, he was given the go-ahead and began painting. “I signed that contract and then I was just pour- ing out the work,” he said. “I was off to the races.” Though some of his paintings evoke the surreal- ism he sees in the Bronx, the scenes he depicted for this project — the biggest of his career — are iconic Bronx. “What’s quintessentially Bronxian landscape? We have the rooftops, we have the trains, we have the street scenes, we have the waterways,” he said leaning against the railing of third-floor balcony, looking out across a library speckled with students reading and using computers. Many of the scenes he painted in his Riverdale studio were taken from works he has already com- pleted, like the old Yankee Stadium being torn down as the new one was being built or of the Kingsbridge Armory. Others are new subjects for him, like BCC’s campus, including the Hall of Fame for Great Ameri- cans. He said he wanted the works to reflect the lives of BCC students, so he painted a view of the Burnside No. 4 train station, where many get off for school. He also wanted the paintings to fit the majestic new building, designed by Robert A. M. Stern Ar- chitects. “The style of the building is a throwback. It har- kens back to kind of the collegiate gothic style, a formal, more classical approach to architecture. And my work is like that. I’m not cutting edge, I’m a tradi- tional guy, but bringing that tradition to the present day,” he said. Mr. Hauben paints what he knows. “The world I’m most familiar with is the Bronx,” he said, and it’s his Bronx scenes that have garnered him international recognition. He was born, as he says, in the “northeast cor- ner of the Bronx” and moved to Fort Independence Street when he was 9. He moved away briefly when he was 18, but has been living in the borough since his mid-20s. He currently lives with his wife in the same apartment that he grew up in. He’s a fixture in Bronx arts scene. He has been teaching painting at the Riverdale YM-YWHA for 17 years and also teaches at City College of New York. His paintings have graced the pages of The Press many times and he’s won numerous awards for his art (The Press learned he won so many Bronx Coun- cil of the Arts awards he was told he had to take it easy and submit less often). This is not his first foray into public art, either; he designed and created the stained glass art at the Freeman Street No. 2 and No 5. train station in 2007. “A Sense of Place” is one of the greatest public arts projects in the history of the mainland. Bronx Borough Historian Lloyd Ultan equates it with two murals completed in the borough in the 1930s: James Monroe Hewlett’s in the Bronx County Build- ing’s Veterans’ Memorial Hall and Ben Shahn’s in the lobby of the Bronx Central Post Office. “Here are tranquil rivers spanned by modern bridges, the abstract designs evoked in elevated subway structures, the glowing sunsets seen from apartment house rooftops … “ Mr. Ultan wrote in a foreword to the forthcoming catalog of Mr. Hauben’s work that BCC is producing. It’s also the biggest project Mr. Hauben has ever completed, and he said he hopes it will help generate some recognition for artists like him in the Bronx. “I at least would like to have the acknowledge- ment from the community that a bus driver gets, or a plumber, that you play a role that’s viable. In our culture it can be challenging as an artist.” “So often people say to me, ‘Oh I pass this spot a million times, I never had time to really look at it.’ Well, that’s what I can do as an artist. That’s what I do. I stop and I spend the day there, or a week there or a lifetime there.” A Sense of Place is open to the public at Bronx Community College, located at 2155 University Ave. An accompanying exhibit, Creating a Sense of Place, will be on view at the college from Tuesday, Oct. 23 to Thursday, Nov. 29. D aniel Hauben, 56, stood in the second-floor lobby of Bronx Community Col-lege’s new North Hall and Library building, pointing to his mural in the

stairwell. “This vantage point is just fantastic,” he said. He could have been talking about the perspective

from which students will view his artwork as they exit the library, but he was talking about the paint-ing itself.

The painting, “View of the Harlem River,” is based on the view of University Heights from Tar-get’s rooftop parking lot in Marble Hill. It is one of 22 he created for Bronx Community College’s new $80 million building, which opened with school in September.

The collection is called A Sense of Place and there was nobody better to create that sense than Bronx-born-and-raised Mr. Hauben.

In 2008, Bronx Community College commis-sioned him — the only Bronxite out of four finalists competing for the job — to create the murals.

It was not made official for two years, but in May 2010, he was given the go-ahead and began painting.

“I signed that contract and then I was just pour-ing out the work,” he said. “I was off to the races.”

Though some of his paintings evoke the surreal-ism he sees in the Bronx, the scenes he depicted for this project — the biggest of his career — are iconic Bronx.

Harsh winter conditions can have crippling effects for driv-ers in locations often affected by snowy and icy weather during the cold months. Hauling the kids to hockey practice or even a quick trip to the grocery store could prove to be a difficult task, especially if a vehicle is not ready for challenging conditions that may come with the cold weather.

Just as consumers spend hours winterizing their homes, it is important to winterize your vehicle. Preserving your invest-ment during the colder months of the year should be a top prior-ity.

To make sure your vehicle is prepared for the winter months;

here are some simple tips to help you arrive safely to your destina-tion and not end up on the side of the road.

• Traction is key: With hazard-ous winter weather ahead, now is not the time to ignore your tires. Many vehicles need superior per-forming winter tires for optimum traction to navigate harsh winter conditions with confidence. The Goodyear Ultra Grip family of tires covers the winter driving needs of virtually every con-sumer. This line leverages inno-vative technology to help provide superior traction in challenging winter conditions. Winter driving experts such as the ILR Winter

Driving School, located in Mount Albert, Ontario, Canada, choose Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT tires for superior performance in winter conditions.

• Feel the pressure: As tem-peratures change, so does tire pressure. Proper tire inflation is essential for increased auto-motive safety, optimum driving performance and even good fuel mileage. Tires should be inflated to the vehicle manufac-turer recommendations printed on a placard on the driver’s side door jamb or in the glove box, and should be checked at least monthly. Improper inflation can lead to premature or irregular

tire wear and even reduce a ve-hicle’s fuel efficiency by an aver-age of 3.3 percent.

• Take the lead out of your foot: Remember, just because you have superior traction doesn’t mean you can speed in snowy and icy conditions. With temperatures dropping, any pre-cipitation can cause the roadway to become dangerously slick. When approaching intersec-tions, stop signs, turns or any area where you have to deceler-ate, take your foot off the gas, apply the brakes gently and give yourself a cushion in case of slip-pery conditions. You can’t get to your destination quickly if your

car is off the road.

• A clean vehicle is a safe vehicle: Do not drive without re-moving snow from the entire ve-hicle. If snow is left on the hood, it can blow onto the windshield, obstructing your view and if left on the roof or tailgate, snow can fly off the car, especially at high speeds, hitting other cars and causing accidents and swerving. Driving with snow on your car, obstructing your vision, is dan-gerous.

• Protect your investment: Cars, trucks and SUVs are likely weathering the harsh conditions and corrosive elements associ-

ated with winter, including freez-ing rain, snow, ice, sand and salt. Keeping vehicles clean will help protect them from the chemicalsand dirt that may attack the car’sfinish and undercarriage. Be sure to use quality cleaners and waxes specifically designed for handling a car’s finish.

• Keep it flowing: Oil is the life-blood of the engine, helping tokeep it running efficiently and effectively. Not sure what oil to use? Defer to a professional or use the grade of motor oil recom-mended by the vehicle manufac-turer to achieve optimum engineprotection and fuel efficiency.

CO-OPS AND CONDOS

RENTALS

By Danielle [email protected]

Whenever I come home from Israel, I’m inspired by all that I’ve eaten and seen, espe-cially the variety of spices in shops and stands at the shuk. Long lines of large bowls with heaping mounds of rich, red pa-prika, mustard-colored tumeric, and a variety of deep, olive green za’aatar (hyssop blend) are just a fraction of what’s available.

For a cook, it’s pure kid-in-a-candy shop syndrome. You want it all. You just don’t know quite where to start, or just how much you’ll walk out. An hour later, you’re lugging a shopping bag reeking of cumin, corian-der, cinnamon and cloves.

Unpacking more than 40 varieties of spices, I wondered how they’d fit into my little New York kitchen cabinet. More im-portantly, it was time to start experimenting with blending, rubbing and cooking.

Start simple, I thought. roast a cut-up chicken the best way I know how. It would yield the same crisp, juicy bird but instead of using rosemary and lemons, I’d use a blend of mild and spicy peppers, sweet papri-ka and garlic.

This is one of those amaz-ing recipes that proves good cooking doesn’t have to be a complicated process, just one that emphasizes putting a few quality ingredients together and preparing them well. I promise that in under an hour

your home will smell so good, it might be impossible not to start eating chicken directly out of the pan.

1 cut-up whole organic chicken

1 head garlic, cloves separated and left unpeeled

2 Tbsps. sweet paprika1-1/2 tsps. aleppo

pepper1 tsp. freshly cracked

black pepper3 Tbsps. quality olive oilkosher salt, as needed

Preheat the oven to 400 de-grees convection roast or 415degrees on a regular oven set-ting.

Remove the chicken from the refrigerator 1/2 hour be-fore cooking. Dry well with pa-per towels. Distribute the garliccloves, tucking them between the skin and flesh of the piecesof chicken.

Combine the spices in a bowl. Stir in olive oil. Rub allover the chicken and place in a pyrex or baking dish, making sure not to crowd.

Allow the chicken to rest atroom temperature for 1/2 hour to take off the chill. Just beforeroasting, season generously withsalt on all sides and bake skin side up for 45 minutes.

Allow the chicken to rest for 15 minutes to an hour. Beforeserving, re-warm for 5 minutesin a 400-degree oven. The skinshould be crisp and dark goldenand the meat, juicy and tender.

What’s cooking?

A simple and tasty pepper and garlic roasted chicken

SPICE ROASTED chicken is cooked cut-up.

Intriguing, exciting and in-tellectually challenging, Looper is a sharply-executed blend of action thriller, character drama and science fiction fantasy.

Predominantly set in a dys-topian future America of 2044, the story also skips forward and backward through time. It tells the story of a professional assassin (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a “looper,” who works for a crime boss from the year

2072. The looper’s job is to kill his boss’s enemies from the future, eliminating them in the split-second they arrive back in 2044.

But while our hero, like all the other assassins working in his present, seem untroubled by their avocation, they all face the same doom.

For their richly-rewarded lifestyle has a built-in time limit imposed upon it. Each lives with the certain knowledge that their careers will come to an abrupt end one day, when they will be obliged to kill them-selves.

They won’t have to end their lives in the usual sense of sui-cide, however. Working within the topsy-turvy world of time travel, each looper who sur-vives his term in the present and who lives into the future

will be sent back to face certain death at the hands of his young-er self, precisely 30 years after each one began his career.

Heady stuff, and, if you fol-low the logic, a bending of time like a moebius strip, flowing back into itself.

But wait for it... that’s the least complex plotline in the film. There’s much more going on, but to give any of it away will spoil all the surprises which await you.

Suffice it to say that there are thrills (and laughs) aplenty to be found, as Gordon-Levitt’s future self, Bruce Willis, at-tempts to change the rules by surviving his trip back to 2044. And there are other serious sub-plots brewing as well, with what-ifs galore when alternative paths are revealed for several of the film’s characters.

‘Looper’ – an instant time travel classic

Home of the week

Traditional elegance in a modern packageT he facade of 485 W. 246th St., on a

landscaped one-third acre lot at the entrance to Fieldston, is quite under-stated. Only the decorative brickwork

gives any hint at the spectacular detailing inside the 5,200-square-foot house.

Indeed, the care lavished on every interior detail is nothing short of remarkable in a house so new. It was completed just seven years ago.

Visitors are in awe the moment they step into the double height foyer with its stone tiled floor, its unique chandelier and its grand stair, com-plete with wrought iron railings.

The finishes in the house are all traditional, though the free flowing arrangement of space is thoroughly modern — from the foyer to the liv-ing room with its wood-burning fireplace, to the formal dining room, to the extraordinary center-island kitchen with custom designed cabinetry, granite counters, breakfast nook and family

room, all facing a secluded patio. Also on the first floor are a guest bedroom

and full bath graciously appointed with im-ported marble surfaces. Upstairs, the master suite includes an aroma therapy whirlpool tub, a steam shower and radiant-heated floors. Two additional bedrooms share a commodious bath and a laundry nook is close at hand.

A finished recreation room shares the lower level with more than ample storage and a three-car garage.

The builders thought of every modern con-venience — two-zone air conditioning and five-zone heating, a central vacuum system and state-of-the-art security.

According to exclusive broker Ardit Gjonaj of of Sotheby’s International Realty, the home is of-fered for $2,200,000 with annual real estate taxes of about $13,000 and Fieldston Property Owners Association dues of $2,440.80.
