For much of this century, with declining membership and nowhere permanent to hold its meetings, the Bronx’s oldest historical society — founded in 1949 — seemed destined to slip into obscurity. In the last four years, the once-thriving and active society held just a handful of events, mostly sparsely attended walking tours of local historic sites. “Slowly, people just stopped par- ticipating,” said Peter Ostrander, a Riverdale resident and president of the society for the past three decades. He was seeing the same lack of interest at other public meetings as well, he said, “It was just the trend.” Then something fortuitous seemed to happen: a group of like-minded history buffs attending last year’s Riverdale Riverfest found each other and decided to reinvigorate the floundering organization. “We realized it’s time to revitalize so we can bring everyone together, maybe those who are new to the com- munity or have been here, to help them explore their history,” said River- dale resident Thomas X. Among the group’s top priorities were, most obviously, finding a perma- nent place to hold meetings and, more importantly, bringing the organization into the 21st century. Enter Nick Dem- bowski. The local schoolteacher with a pen- chant for web design created an eye- catching, user-friendly website that features historic photos, links to his- toric documents and other historic or- ganizations and, the pièce de résistance, a feature that allows visitors to overlay maps from the time of the Revolutionary War, as well as from 1885, from 1921 and a satellite image from 2006, to see how the Riverdale- Kingsbridge area has changed in the last four centuries. In addition to serving as a learn- ing tool for visitors, the website, www. kingsbridgehistoricalsociety.org, also allows the society to announce events, eliminating the arduous — not to men- tion costly — task of sending out mail- ings, Mr. Ostrander said. Over the last few months, the group has held two meetings, one last No- vember, which discussed the Jerome Park race track, and another in Febru- ary, examining the history of Marble Hill. Held in the Community Hall of St. Gabriel’s Church — which, along with St. Margaret of Cortona, has also gen- erously allowed the group to store some of its archives — both meetings drew upwards of 60 people, many of them new faces, said Mr. Ostrander. The turnout has given the group hope that their recent ef- forts are paying off. The society has planned anoth- er lecture in May that will address “Kingsbridge During the Revolution in 1776 (as seen by the Dutchess County Militia Regiment).” Richard McGuin- ness, a Revolutionary War re-enactor and company historian for the 5th New York Regiment, a continental line regiment dur- ing the war, will be the presenter. This area was home to six Ameri- can Revolutionary fortifications, a number of battle sites and the King’s Bridge, which was the only land route connecting Manhattan to the main- land. The talk will discuss these forts, some of which still can be seen today. Mr. Ostrander’s hope is to bring new blood to the organization, and to s h o w those in Riverdale and Kingsbridge that history and historical landmarks exist, even if you can’t see them or know where to look. “There’s so much history in this area,” said Mr. Ostrander, who often finds him- self walking local streets visualizing what life was like centuries ago. T he Kingsbridge Historical Society, an organization dedicated to exploring the neighborhood’s storied

past, is now looking to the future. For much of this century, with

declining membership and nowhere permanent to hold its meetings, the Bronx’s oldest historical society — founded in 1949 — seemed destined to slip into obscurity. In the last four years, the once-thriving and active society held just a handful of events, mostly sparsely attended walking tours of local historic sites.

“Slowly, people just stopped par-ticipating,” said Peter Ostrander, a Riverdale resident and president of the society for the past three decades. He was seeing the same lack of interest at other public meetings as well, he said, “It was just the trend.”

Then something fortuitous seemed to happen: a group of like-minded history buffs attending last year’s Riverdale Riverfest found

each other and decided to reinvigorate the floundering organization.

“We realized it’s time to revitalize so we can bring everyone together, maybe those who are new to the com-munity or have been here, to help them explore their history,” said River-dale resident Thomas X. Casey, the so-ciety’s secretary.

Among the group’s top priorities were, most obviously, finding a perma-nent place to hold meetings and, more importantly, bringing the organization into the 21st century. Enter Nick Dem-bowski.

The local schoolteacher with a pen-chant for web design created an eye-catching, user-friendly website that features historic photos, links to his-toric documents and other historic or-ganizations and, the pièce de résistance, a feature that allows visitors to overlay maps from the time of the Revolutionary War, as well as from 1885, from 1921 and a satellite image from 2006, to see how the Riverdale-

Kingsbridge area has

changed in the last four centuries. In addition to serving as a learn-

ing tool for visitors, the website, www.kingsbridgehistoricalsociety.org, also allows the society to announce events, eliminating the arduous — not to men-tion costly — task of sending out mail-ings, Mr. Ostrander said.

Over the last few months, the group has held two meetings, one last No-vember, which discussed the Jerome Park race track, and another in Febru-ary, examining the history of Marble Hill. Held in the Community Hall of St. Gabriel’s Church — which, along with St. Margaret of Cortona, has also gen-erously allowed the group to store some of its archives

— both meetings drew upwards of 60 people, many of them new faces, said Mr. Ostrander. The turnout has given the group hope that their recent ef-forts are paying off.

The society has planned anoth-er lecture in May that will address “Kingsbridge During the Revolution in 1776 (as seen by the Dutchess County Militia Regiment).” Richard McGuin-ness, a Revolutionary War re-enactor and company historian for the 5th New York Regiment, a continental line regiment dur-ing the

Kingsbridge that history and historical landmarks exist, even if you can’t see them or know where to look.

“There’s so much history in this area,” said Mr. Ostrander, who often finds him-self walking local streets visualizing what life was like centuries ago. The history of the ne ighbor hood, he said, “is fun to know because it makes living here just a little more interest-ing.”

Home of the weekLinda Lepson, Argo Residential

A river view? Sure, but a whole lot more

R egular readers of the Home of the Week column have seen the virtues of Skyview on the Hudson — that resortlike

apartment complex — extolled before. Its three towers, which share 23 hilltop

acres, offer commanding views in every direction, especially the west, where the Palisades sit astride the Hudson River. The full-service complex at 5700, 5800 and 5900 Arlington Ave. has doormen and concierges and an Olympic-size swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, a private playground, a dog run and a state of the art health club — included in the maintenance.

But even for Skyview, this three bed-room, two-bath co-op on a high floor at 5900 is special. It has been extensively renovated with new hardwood floors and a chef’s kitchen with granite countertops, stainless

steel appliances and new bright white cabi-netry.

The entryway has been finished with new ceramic tiles and the hallway bath-room design features marble basketweave floor tiles and marble wall and trim tile.

Within its soundproofed walls and ceil-ings are new closet doors and interior closet systems, crown and baseboard mouldings, ceiling fans and custom radiator covers.

Even the terrace overlooking the Hud-son has been refurbished with a new wood-en divider and all-weather composite floor-ing.

Parking is available and basic cable ser-vice costs just $35 per month.

According to exclusive broker Linda Lepson of Argo Realty, the apartment is list-ed at $479,000 with monthly maintenance of $1,555.

Clockwise from top:

The Palisades peek through living room windows.

The new kitchen gleams.

The hallway bathroom has new fixtures and marble tile work.

The home office is spacious.

Light streams into the master bedroom.

What’s cooking?

Whip up a black bean hummusBy Danielle [email protected]

Vegetarians often find them-selves spending a lot of energy trying to make sure their diets are filled with healthy proteins. And even meat eaters need a break from the same old grilled chicken breasts and roasted salmon.

Beans are an excellent fiber-rich source of protein. Black beans in particular are my fa-vorite. A staple in many Latin cultures, black beans often get overlooked by shoppers scour-ing the aisles for lean, low sugar, low fat, low cholesterol proteins.

Besides running you a whop-ping .79 cents to $2.25 per can, black beans are widely acces-sible, and their mild flavor lends itself to so many spices, herbs and preparations.

Any easy go-to favorite I like to make is black bean hummus. It’s as easy as draining a few cans of beans and pulsing them with garlic, lime juice, cilantro, salt and pepper.

Have it on hand to nibble on with sliced vegetables for a change from the same old store-bought lemony chick pea hum-mus.

EASY BLACK BEAN HUMMUS

Serves 4 to 6 as an appetizer.

3 15.5-oz. cans black beans, drained and rinsed well under cold water

3 garlic cloves

1 Cup fresh cilantro leaves, rinsed and dried

4 Tbsps. fresh lime juice (about 2-3 limes)

2-3 Tbsps. good quality olive oil

kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

In the bowl of a food pro-cessor, pulse the garlic until chopped. Add the black beans, cilantro, lime juice, 1/2 tsp., salt and about 8 cracks of fresh black pepper.

Pulse until chunky. With the motor running, drizzle in the olive oil 1 Tbsp. at a time until creamy. Scrape down the bowl and taste for seasoning. Add salt and pepper, as needed.

Cook’s note: Black beans can be simmered with onions, jalapenos, ground cumin, a bay leaf, salt and pepper for an easy side dish. Try combining rinsed beans, chopped bell peppers, red onions and raw spinach with lime juice, olive oil, salt and pep-per for a lean salad any time of year.

THE RETIRED & Senior Vol-unteer Program (RSVP) of the Community Service Society is recruiting volunteers age 55 and over to assist in working with 3- and 4-year-old children in Head Start Centers, helping them to develop a love for learn-ing.

RSVP Grandfriend volun-teers are patient and caring in-dividuals who share their time and experience with children and teachers in selected Head Start centers throughout New York City. Grandfriends assist Head Start teachers in activi-ties that help children develop and strengthen their language skills. Orientation and training are provided. For more infor-mation, please call Margarita I. Zapata at 718-295-7940.

Established 34 years ago, the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program’s 9,000 volunteers contribute more than two mil-lion hours of service annually to 600 organizations in New York City. RSVP is part of the Com-munity Service Society of New York, a nonprofit organization which advocates on behalf of the poor in the areas of educa-tion, affordable housing, health care and income maintenance. RSVP is funded by CSS, the Corporation for National Ser-vice, other government agen-cies, foundations, individuals and the Friends of RSVP, Inc.

VOLUNTEERS over the age of 55 are sought by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of the Community Service So-ciety to help other seniors, free of charge, with their federal and state income tax returns.

Bilingual volunteers profi-cient in English and another language are especially needed.

The program is run through the Tax Counseling for the Elderly, which provides vol-unteers with 40 hours of free training and certification by the Internal Revenue Service. A week-long training session by the IRS will be scheduled for the month of January. Once cer-tified, each volunteer is expect-ed to serve at least four hours a week through April 15th at a local site. Tax counseling ser-vices are offered at libraries, senior centers and community organizations. Volunteers will receive partial reimbursement for travel to and from their counseling assignments and training sessions.

RSVP is a nonprofit orga-nization that has placed some 10,000 volunteers aged 55 and over in assignments with more than 600 organizations through-out the five boroughs.

To register for training, or for more information, call 718-295-7940.

MOSHOLU MONTEFIORE Community Center is at 3450 DeKalb Ave., at Gun Hill Road, one block east of Jerome Av-enue. Classes for adults, teens and children take place there on Saturday and Sunday, as well as weeknights. Call 718-882-4000 ext. 0 for free brochures.
