O n the wall of the Blue Door Gallery in Yonkers hangs an assemblage

of odd objects picked from trashcans, purchased online or from the artist’s personal collection of “stuff.”

Tucked neatly inside cigar boxes are old clock parts, light bulbs and metal strips, a square of colorful beads ar-ranged in a geometric pattern and a pair of doll arms that jut out into the gallery, appearing to welcome viewers to take a closer look. Flanking the ci-gar boxes are a level and yo-yo on one side, and children’s blocks that read “I HAD A THOUGHT ONCE,” on the other.

Lewis Cohen’s eclectic piece inspires more than just one thought and even more questions, most nota-bly, “What does it all mean?” Luckily for those visiting the Riverdale Avenue gallery on Saturday, they were able to get answers directly from the artist himself.

For the past five years,

Blue Door Gallery has held its “Show and Tell” event, giv-ing its visitors a chance to not only view and discuss art, but to learn about process, tech-nique and, in some instances, to work alongside the artists to make pieces of their own in a variety of media.

The goal, explained direc-tor, Luis Perelman, is to make art more “accessible” to the viewer.

“We’re trying to expose the community to the arts, to the whole process,” said Mr. Perelman.

The Blue Door Gallery is a bright spot in what is oth-erwise a dreary stretch of Riverdale Avenue. The Blue Door Artists Association — a group of mostly Yonkers art-ists — opened the gallery in March 2009, with help from the City of Yonkers and from the building’s owner, the non-profit Westhab, which allows them to stay rent-free. In re-turn, the association has ini-tiated a number of programs for Yonkers schoolchildren and residents, including po-etry readings, writing and art workshops at the gallery and street festivals.

Nine more artists are scheduled to demonstrate and talk about their work over the next three Saturdays in the “Show and Tell” event, and they create in a range of media, from doll-making and fiber art, to paintings and pho-tography. Children are highly encouraged to attend and par-ticipate.

In addition to Mr. Cohen, last Saturday’s talks featured painter Dora Tomulic and photographer Alan Cohen, who both took the intimate crowd of onlookers through their processes of creating pieces they’re proud to dis-play.

“It’s important to talk about your work,” explained Ms. To-mulic. “You need interaction.”

Her honest words provided the audience with an idea of

how difficult — and fulfill-ing — being an artist can be. There is a constant need to create and to paint, she ex-plained. She toils over color choices and her need to infuse black into every piece; she finds inspiration in gravel and she can’t help but adorn her pieces with these little graph-ics she likes to call monsters.

She stopped short of truly defining any of her abstract pieces. She seems to like leav-ing that up to the viewer.

“Everybody sees some-thing different, which is okay with me, as long as you see something,” Ms. Tomulic said.

“Show and Tell” is free and held at the Blue Door Gallery, 13 Riverdale Ave., Yonkers. For more information, call 914-375-5100 or go to www.bluedoorgallery.org.

DORA TOMULIC offers visitors to the Blue Door Gallery a peek into her thought process of choosing colors during Saturday’s ‘Show and Tell’ event.

Artists pull back the curtain on their work

ALAN COHEN, an artist who works in photo montage, explains his computer composite methods for creating pieces.

AT LEFT, Lewis Cohen, who uses found objects to create three-dimensional sculptures, explains that just one item is often the inspiration for the whole piece.

Developing recipes and menus for families is what I do almost every day. While I’m cooking these meals, I rarely eat an entire lunch or dinner. A spoonful of this and a fork-ful of that keep me from being hungry but does not a meal make. What follows are usually ravenous late-night cravings for carbs and sugar.

After years of this, I realized my own diet was totally unbal-anced and my metabolism out of whack.

That’s why this year I’ve de-cided to follow my own advice and use a few hours on Sundays to shop and prep some healthy lunches and dinners for the week.

Here’s one of my new fa-vorites; I call it the everything salad. I precook red quinoa, len-tils and hardboiled eggs. Then I chop up some bell peppers and halve some cherry tomatoes. Next, I take a few quart contain-ers (from Chinese leftovers) and layer first with quinoa, next with lentils, then peppers and tomatoes. Finally, I fill the rest of the container with raw spin-ach and top with a hard-boiled egg.

I can bring this salad any-where and simply toss in a bowl with some vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Filled with protein, wholesome fat and healthy carbohydrates, this salad is colorful, full of tex-ture and totally satiating. For extra protein, you can always add 2 ozs. of grilled chicken or roasted salmon, but as far as vegetarian salads go, this one’s got it all.

THE EVERYTHING SALADServes 1.

1/2 Cup cooked lentils1/2 Cup cooked red

quinoa1/4 Cup diced bell

peppers4 cherry tomatoes,

halved2 Cups baby spinach1 hard-boiled eggFresh lemon juice and/

or red wine vinegar, to taste

2 tsps. extra-virgin olive oil

kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper

In a quart container, layer the ingredients in the order listed.

If bringing to work, pack a pre-halved lemon, and small containers of vinegar, oil and

mixed salt/pepper. One or two oz. Ziploc or Gladware contain-ers work really well for toting around condiments. When ready to eat, crumble the egg and toss the salad together in a large bowl. Season to taste.

Multiply the recipe by three, and prep three days worth of lunch. If possible, leave olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper at work so all you need to carry are the salads.

What’s cooking?

Protein, healthy fat and carbs, a salad that has everything

THE ACES (Advocacy, Coun-seling and Entitlement Ser-vices) Project of the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program of the Community Service Society (CSS/RSVP) will be offering a free course training adults age 55 and over on how to serve as volunteer entitlement coun-selors. The six-week training program, beginning on April 9, 2001, will be held at the Com-munity Service Society, 105 E. 22nd St. in Manhattan. Upon completion of the training, vol-unteers will be placed in a hos-pital or social service agency in their community.

RSVP/ACES currently seeks individuals interested in attending the entitlement course training, which covers eligibility requirements and ap-plication procedures for Medic-aid, SSI, food stamps and other government funded assistance programs. We also help volun-teers to improve their inter-viewing and advocacy skills. The program needs caring and patient older adults who are dedicated to helping financially disadvantaged New Yorkers. RSVP/ACES volunteers help over 1,000 low-income, disabled and elderly people each month receive benefits to which they are entitled. A personal inter-view and a commitment of six hours per week of volunteer service is required.

Established 35 years ago, the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program is one of the oldest adult volunteer programs in the nation. Its 9,000 volunteers con-tribute more than two million hours of service annually in 600 organizations in New York City. RSVP is part of the Community Service Society of New York, a nonprofit organization that ad-vocates on behalf of the poor in areas of education, afford-able housing, health care and income maintenance. RSVP is funded by CSS, the Corporation for National Service, other gov-ernment agencies, foundations, individuals and the Friends of RSVP, Inc.

MOSHOLU MONTEFIORE Community Center is at 3450 DeKalb Ave., at Gun Hill Road, one block east of Jerome Av-enue. Classes for adults, teens and children take place there on Saturday and Sunday, as well as weeknights. Call 718-882-4000 ext. 0 for free brochures.

Home of the weekBrown, Harris, Stevens

An apartment that thinks it’s a house

Dogwood Close offers a rare blend of two worlds. On the one

hand, the beautifully land-scaped three-acre complex on Henry Hudson Parkway and West 247th Street has all the advantages of co-op ownership. On the other, its multi-story units offer residents the feeling that they are living in a private home.

This week’s three-bedroom three-and-a-half bath triplex is a case in point.

The graciously proportioned interior has been renovated with high-end finishes and de-tailing throughout, including an upgraded electric panel.

The first floor has a new powder room with Kohler fix-tures, Calcutta marble floors and artisan Venetian plaster walls.

The custom designed chef’s kitchen was handcrafted with an abundant amount of storage. Resting on Porcelanosa “wood” floor are designer fixtures in-cluding a Blanco double stain-less steel sink with Hansgrohe pull out faucet and hot water

dispenser. Along with a French door style Maytag refrigerator and Bosch dishwasher are a GE Profile five-burner stove top, a dual oven and a microwave.

The second floor has a mas-ter bedroom with en suite bath, a second bedroom and an ad-ditional bedroom. Architectural plans are available to create an open loft with skylights and a powder room on the top floor.

The high-ceilinged basement is finished with a full playroom with built in storage, a laundry room with full-sized washer and dryer, and a windowed bedroom with a full bath.

The private rear yard has a deck, a garden and a sand box. There’s plenty of room for kids to play basketball, touch foot-ball, you name it. Other ame-nities include covered parking (for a fee), free storage room for bikes etc. The co-op is pet friendly.

According to Ann and To-bias Schapiro of Brown, Har-ris, Stevens, the asking price is $795,000 with monthly mainte-nance charges of $1,884. The tax deduction is 50 percent.

The living room, top photo, offers room to roam.

The master bedroom, above, has two exposures.
