A foot of snow blanketed the neighbor-hood just as the weekend began, giv-ing residents plenty of time and op-portunity to get out, whether on foot

or strapped to skis, and enjoy the winter wonder-land.

Ewen Park, with its monstrous hill, was not surprisingly the hub of snow activity on Saturday. Bundled-up children hopped on tubes, tobag-gans and even snowboards to cruise down the slope toward Riverdale Avenue. Among those enjoying the day was Marble Hill resident, Zena Humphrey, who was waiting at the bottom for her family to come zooming down.

“I used to do it when I was a child,” she said, adding that it’s a fun and inexpensive way to spend the day. “This is the best activity,” she said.

Over in Van Cortlandt Park, several ski enthu-siasts grabbed their poles to tour the trails or the Parade Ground.

Ana Alexeeva said the last time she donned a pair of cross-country skis was 20 years ago with her father, in Russia. The cold didn’t seem to bother her.

“I like the weather because it’s Russian weath-er,” she said.

Fifteen-year-old David Ojeda and his friends were exploring the snowy trails of Vannie. But be-fore he could hit the hills and sled with his friends, he said, his parents told him he needed to shovel in front of his house. —Reporting by Marisol Diaz

By Danielle [email protected]

Last Friday morning, just be-fore our much ado about noth-ing “blizzard” of 2013, I was put-ting a stew in the oven, when the calls began.

Reports from the grocery store trenches were coming in. “Have you been to the su-permarket yet? The lines are out the door” and “I was just at Fairway and people were push-ing me with their carts!”

The hype over the storm only escalated from there. Out-of-state friends were asking me over Facebook, “Are you okay? Are you ready?”

Ready? Was I supposed to be preparing for Doomsday?

It’s snow. We get it all the time here in New York, and instead of picturing shoppers fighting over the last box of Corn Flakes, for me, the win-try weather conjures up more pleasant images.

In 1996, when nearly two feet of snow blanketed New York City, I remember River-dale residents strolling down a snow-covered Henry Hudson Parkway. I picture the windows of An Beal Bocht steamy and strewn with Christmas lights, a hot cup of coffee waiting to be sipped. I see children making snowmen, throwing snowballs and sledding down local hills.

That’s what a Riverdale bliz-zard brings to mind. And when it’s time to come in and tap the snow boots off at the door for the night, nothing is more sat-isfying and warming than beef stew. So take my advice: the best thing to do before the next storm is to stay calm, make yourself some beef stew and en-joy the falling flakes.

BEEF STEW

The key to this recipe is using a Dutch oven, like a Le Creuset or Staub pot. It makes all the difference in the world and when you sink your teeth into the meat, it will be soft, but-tery and perfect. This recipe serves 4.

Canola oilkosher salt and freshly

cracked pepperAll-purpose flour, for

dusting2 lbs. boneless short

ribs, trimmed of fat and cubed into 1-inch pieces

2 medium onions, trimmed, peeled and quartered

2 large carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces

4 celery stalks, rinsed well and cut into 2-inch pieces

2 Tbsps. tomato paste1-3/4 Cups red wine (I

use pinot noir)3 Cups veal or beef stockLarge curly egg noodles

(cooked) for servingFreshly chopped dill or

parsley (for garnish)

Preheat oven to 340 degrees. In a large Dutch oven, heat

the oil over medium-high heat. Dry the beef with paper towels and season with salt and pep-per. Dust the beef with flour and brown in batches on all sides. Do not crowd in pan. Transfer meat to a plate while you cook the remaining short ribs.

Once all the meat has been browned and some brown bits

have formed on the bottom of pot, add the vegetables, a good pinch of salt, and cook until they begin to caramelize and brown.

Next add the tomato paste and cook another minute or so.

Add the wine, stock, beef and some more salt and pepper. Scrape all the bits up from the bottom of the pan. The juices should be just shy of covering the meat and vegetables with

some peeking out. Once the liquid comes to a simmer, cover and place in center of oven. Set a timer for two-and-a-half hours.

Remove from oven. The liq-uid should have reduced and thickened. Taste for seasoning and adjust. Meanwhile, prepare the egg noodles according to package directions. Drain and serve in a bowl topped with stew and freshly chopped dill or parsley.

What’s cooking?

Snowed in? Fire up your oven and put on a pot of beef stew

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Girl Scout Council of Greater New York is seeking responsi-ble adults to volunteer as troop leaders in the Bronx.

Volunteers lead neighbor-hood-based troops of up to 20 girls in Daisies, for age 5 to kin-dergarten; Brownies, age 6 to 8; Juniors, age 9 to 11; Cadettes, age 12 to 14; or Seniors, age 14 to 17.

Troops meet regularly, but flexible schedules are available. The activities are designed to help girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, as well as have fun. With the help of their leaders, Girl Scouts explore New York’s cultural resources, earn badges, discover the worlds of math, science and technology, participate in community service projects and camping programs, attend college prep programs and much more.

There are currently 24,000 Girl Scouts in the five boroughs, and 6,500 volunteers. Potential volunteers should contact Gigi Irizarry at 212-645-4000 ext 244
