LISA HANNIGAN WITH JOHN SMITH

SATURDAY JULY 30TH

TIME 8PM PRICE " 20

Lisa Hannigan will be touring up and down the country for the summer, with the wonderful John Smith supporting, in a slightly more grown up version of her summer holidays.

“I’ve spent the last year travelling about and writing songs for my second record. During that time I met Joe Henry and from that moment I knew he was the man to help me make the record that was in my head. I found a wonderful converted farmhouse studio in the middle of Snowdonia national park in Wales and we all headed over for a week. Gavin Glass played piano and banjo, Ross Turner was on drums, Shane Fitzsimons, double and electric bass, Donagh Molloy, harmonium and trumpet and an eight and a half months pregnant Lucy Wilkins played violin and arranged a couple of songs for cello and violin. John Smith joined for some guitar and general tomfoolery. The album will be out in the autumn and I can’t wait to get out and play the songs from it.” - Lisa Hannigan

SATURDAY JULY 30TH

THURSDAY AUGUST 25TH

The Gloaming is a collective of remarkable individual talents who share a musical aesthetic. The five came together to explore new music at Grouse Lodge Studios in Westmeath in early 2011. At once they made music that is both ancient and utterly new. New York pianist Bartlett, sean-nos singer Ó Lionaird, Chicago guitarist Cahill, fiddler and hardanger innovator Ó Raghallaigh and fiddle master Hayes is a group of virtuoso musicians, yet it is a band with a sound all of its own. Sparse and beautiful. Authentic and tune-filled. Capable of raucous power.A night with these powerhouse musicians will not be easily forgotten.

Every August, 32 Roses from all over the world come together in Tralee, Co. Kerry, all of them either born in Ireland or of Irish descent. One of them will be crowned The Rose of Tralee. A classic in children’s cinema!

Bastian is a young boy who lives a dreary life being tormented by school bullies. On one such occasion he escapes into a book shop where the old proprietor reveals an ancient story-book to him, which he is warned can be dangerous. Shortly after, he “borrows” the book and begins to read it in the school attic where he is drawn into the mythical land of Fantasia, which desperately needs a hero to save it from destruction.

Both children and adults will enjoy this film for its special effects, beautiful scenery, and colorful characters. Most of all, the message of daring to dream and soaring to new heights through books is a powerful one that kids of any age can relate to.

Three outstanding musicians with three distinct regional styles join forces for this unique tour, each hugely influenced by the place they come from. While staying very much within the tradition, each will be pushing their boundaries to the limit - creative sparks are guaranteed to fly!

Breanndán O Beaghlaoich is brimming with the wild and beautiful music of West Kerry. As a singer he’s a gentle giant, on the accordion, a force of nature.

Legendary fiddler Tommy Peoples is internationally recognised as having a huge influence on Irish traditional music, both as a player and composer.

Laoise Kelly is regarded as the most significant harper of her generation. From Westport, she began playing at an early age, encouraged by her father who introduced her to the music of O’Carolan. Her reinterpretation of the O’Carolan canon is just a part of her breathtaking repertoire, and her tune playing is truly magnificent

“The most maddeningly nourishing, elevating, and mesmerising Irish music you’ll hear today” Earle Hitchner, The Irish Echo, on Brendan Begley (with Caoimhin O Raghallaigh)

“Tommy Peoples gracefully occupies a prime authoritative position on the topshelf of Traditional fiddle players.” The Journal of Music

“Kelly virtually reinvents the instrument with her rhythmic and melodic intricacy.” Irish Times

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 29TH TOWN HALL THEATRE GALWAY PRESENTS

FAITH HEALER BY BRIAN FRIEL

Riverbank Arts Centre is delighted to showcase the contemporary works of three craft makers as part of the Craft Council of Ireland’s designated year of craft.

A shared passion for the environment led three artists to collaborate for this show.

Michele Hannan’s ceramic sculptures and flowing vessels draw their inspiration from the simple forms found in nature and the abstracted rhythmical patterns created by the sea. Michele’s work is decorated combining glass and volcanic glazes.

Eva Kelly’s fused glass wall pieces are a further development of her ‘Rockpool’ series of plates. Inspired by the rock formations around the west coast of Ireland, Eva translates her ideas into three dimentional sculptures using fusing, slumping and multiple firings . She adds various metals and glass oxides to give her work greater depth and colour.

Dara O’Neill is a textile artist . Her paintings on silk reflect the changing light in nature. Her work exudes a sense of calmness with her choice of colours.

We are continuing to develop our arts space for children just off the foyer at Riverbank. This is a fun and child-friendly space fi lled with comfy beanbags, small tables and chairs and a colouring station at which children can respond to the art and culture experiences at the centre. We have some exciting events and exhibitions in this space starting with Let’s Go Home Little Bear by Beth Halloran on July 9th to August 6th. Keep an eye on this space!

From Monday August 1st until Wednesday August 24th we will be taking a little break from events at Riverbank Arts Centre. It will be DIY time at the centre while we freshen up and prepare for the rest of the year. We’re back in full swing on Thursday 25th of August with what promises to be an outstanding evening of music with Thomas Bartlett, Dennis Cahill, Martin Hayes, Iarla Ó Lionaird, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh aka The Gloaming; and on Friday 26th have a good laugh with Zocorro Rose of Tralee- a show about the hilarious adventure of Zocorro, the wanna-be Spanish Rose. Fun times ahead!
