Amber Behrendt, Branch Manager of Inde-pendent Bank said, this was truly a team effort.Stephanie Hickox came up with the Monopolytheme and Darlene Ringler held the creativeinsight. When being questioned about who wasthe most instrumental in the displays creationand construction, each person pictured said it
was a team effort. In addition, they wanted tomake certain that four people that were un-available for the picture were mentioned; KatieGort, Christine Baker, Megan Nofkee and Le-ona Bennett. These folks were also part of thedisplays creation and construction. It was de-nitely the team effort that got them this win!
A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATHCARSON CITY Carson City Hospi-
tal (CCH) is focusing on Child PassengerSafety Week Sept. 19-25. Year-round, thehospital offers trained technicians on staffto instruct parents on the proper way toinstall a car seat.
Nearly 75 percent of child safetyseats arent used properly, said Daniyel
McAlvey, CCH Service Excellence Manag-er and a certied Child Passenger Safetytechnician. Thats why we offer this ser-vice to our patients and the community.
We want to be sure that every child seatis installed securely and properly, so thatour children are safe and protected whenriding in a vehicle.
McAlvey and her co-worker, CCH O.B.Department Manager Shelly Betancourt, successfully completed all of the require-ments for the technician certication
as part of the National Highway TrafcSafety Administration (NHTSA) Nation-al Standardized Child Passenger SafetyTraining program. They attended a week-
long course that included skill-testing ex-ercises and a series of tests.
The curriculum was framed with aLearn, Practice, Explain paradigm, sothat we are now able to explain installa-tion procedures to parents and caregivers, and empower them to condently installand re-install child restraints on their own
after weve assisted them, said McAlvey.According to the U.S. Department ofTransportations NHTSA research, 8,959lives have been saved from 1975 to 2008
by the proper use of child restraints. In2008 among children under age 5 inpassenger vehicles an estimated 244lives were saved by child restraint use(child safety seats and adult seat belts).Research shows that child restraints pro-vide the best protection for all children upto age 8.
Its the responsibility of every singleparent and caregiver to make sure their

This years CROP/HUNGER Walk is being dedi-cated to the Memory of Linda Eickenroth. Linda,a long time supporter and volunteer, recently losta courageous fight with cancer. Last year, she wastoo weak to walk, but still wanted to contribute. So,while others completed the 4.5 mile course, Lindagamely rocked in her rocking chair. Walk organiz-ers wanted to recognize her courage and dedica-tion. So this year, the volunteers will be walkingnot just for the c ause of defeating hunger, but alsofor Linda.
CROP, which stands for Communities Respond-ing to Overcome Poverty, is an annual event spon-sored by Church World Services. This is a coopera-tive ministry of over 35 denominations workingtogether to help erase poverty. This is a world wideoutreach providing aid to over 80 c ountries includ-

Participants will have gotten pledges for do-nations and then will walk to show their commit-tment. The walk kicks off at 1pm and will followa 4.5 mile course beginning and ending at EnsleyPark in Howard City. Walkers will be treated to re-freshments at the end of the walk.
Last years walk was the most successful yet.Over 100 walkers raised over $6,500. Of this, 25percent or over $1,600, was retained in the com-munity and donated to Helping Hands, our localfood pantry. The remainder was donated to ChurchWorld Services to help fund their many programs.Walk organizers are upbeat about duplicating thissuccess. They urge any one approached by a volun-

GRANT When Grant schools Su-perintendent Scott Bogner applied fora federal school improvement grant inAugust, he kept his ngers crssed. We were under the impression that everyschool that applied would receive mon-ey, he said, but yu never knw. As itturned out, Grants application was oneof just 28 schools in Michigan to receivethe federal aid designed t bst studentachievement. Eighty-fur schls ap-plied.
The schl district will receive $1.7million spread over three years to help itshigh school students upgrade their mathand English skills. This is a big bstfor our high school, really for our wholeschl cmmunity, Bgner said. Wesee this as an opportunity to do things weknew we were ging t d anyway. Nwwe have the nancial resurces..
To qualify for a grant, schools hadt be included in a Persistently Lwest
Achieving Schls list released by thestate in June. Michigans list was basedon reading and math testing data from2007-2009. While Grant High SchlsMerit Exam scres were cmparable tther area high schls and were higherthan many other schools in the state,Bogner said the school was placed onthe list because f a mdest decline inits scres. We wuld have preferred ntt have been n the states list, Bgnersaid. But were lking at this as a psi -tive, as an opportunity to step up andd mre fr ur students. A later, sec-nd, state list that examined additinalperformance measures did not includeGrant High Schl.
Schl staff has already begun wrkon the reforms outlined in the districtsschool improvement plan, which tookhundreds f hurs t prepare, states
Bgner. Preparing the plan invlved theeffrts f Grant schl fcials and staff
frm the Newayg Cunty Reginal Edu-catinal Services Agency in Fremnt.
Grant chse a transfrmatinalmodel of improvement, one of fourchoices allowed under federal guide-lines. It requires replacing the schlprincipal, implementing comprehensiveinstructin refrm, and extending learn-ing and teacher planning time. Becausecurrent high schl Principal Dan Simnwas hired befre the start f last schl year, he des nt have t be replaced,Bgner nted.
Sme f the federal mney will beused t help English and math teachersdevelop curriculum and assess studentperfrmance. Sme f the aid culd beused n befre- and after-schl learn-ing pprtunities.
Next schl year, the high schl willffer a freshmen academy fr at-risk
students. Were nding that ur fresh-men are the ones who are struggling the
mst, Bgner said.As programs are put in place, school
administrators will continue to look atother performance initiatives for thehigh schl. Everything we d must beeducatinally viable and sustainable, hesaid.
Prgress n the schls imprve-ments will be mnitred by the state n aregular basis, Bgner said.
The schl bard will hst a cm-munity frum n Sept. 29 fr parentsand area residents t learn mre abutthe districts plans to improve the highschl, he said. The frum will begin at 7p.m. in the middle schl cafeteria.
We are up t this challenge, Bgnersaid. The schl bard and ur staff arecommitted to improving the high schooland, in fact, all f ur schls.
Its imprtant t us that these kids
have every opportunity thats coming tothem.
