The Bureau of Fire Servicestoday urges consumers to thor-oughly water their Christmas

tree daily and practice impor-tant safety measures to avoidre risk and reduce the chanceof a tragedy during this joyousand festive holiday season.

A dry tree is extremelyammable compared to a well-watered tree, said Acting StateFire Marshal Karen Towne. When a Christmas tree catchesre, you have only seconds toescape a potentially deadly re--- dont risk the loss of family, friends or your home.

Each year, an average of 240home res start with Christmastrees causing 13 deaths, 27 in-juries and more than $16.7 mil-

lion in direct property damage, according to the National FireProtection Association. On av-erage, one of every 18 reportedhome Christmas tree res re-sulted in a death compared toan average of one death per 141total reported home res.

Statistics show that Christ-mas tree res are much morelikely to cause death than av-erage home res, said Towne. The risk of re is higher withnatural trees than articial ones. And, shorts in electrical lightsor open ames from candles, lighters or matches are the mostcommon causes of tree res.

Safety tips for selecting, set-ting up, and lighting your holi-day tree:

n If you have an articialtree, be sure it is labeled or cer-tied by the manufacturer asre retardant. This indicates the

Lions Club to sponsor hearing screening clinicThe Howard City Lions Club, within

District #11-E-1, in cooperation with theWilliam and Leni Carls Speech and Hear-ing Clinic of Munson Medical Center, will sponsor a mobile hearing screeningclinic in Howard City during Winterfest. The Clinic will be on Saturday, January21 at the Howard City Fire Station from10:00am-3:00pm. Munson and the LionsClubs have cooperated in the purchase, stafng and equipping of the van in order

to meet the unfullled need of residents inoutlying area for adequate, skilled hearingassessment. Each Lions Club, within the53 community northwestern Michigandistrict, will host one or more hearing-screening clinics.

The Clinic will have two goals. Therst goal will be to identify the childrenwho have hearing loss. Past Director, EdSmith of the William and Leni Carls Hear-ing Clinic states, Present statistics reveal

that one out of every ve children in ourarea, between the ages of birth and seven years, have hearing impairments. Manyhave not yet been identied. Many otherchildren have been identied to havehearing impairment, but much too late af-ter the onset of the loss. We want to detectthe loss as early as possible so that correc-tions can be made and the childs educa-tion is not affected.

There is a second goal of the mobile

hearing clinic to identify senior citizenswith hearing losses. The clinic will offerprofessional assistance to senior citizensas to whether a person is in need of ampli-cation (hearing aid) or whether the pres-ent aid the person is wearing is function-ing properly or in need of replacement.

The clinic will offer 15-minute ap-pointments to anyone interested. To makean appointment, please call Howard CityLion Rich at 231.937.4141.

tree will resist burning and should extin-guish quickly.

n If selecting a live tree, choose atree with fresh, green needles that do notbreak when touched or lose many needleswhen the tree is tapped on the ground.

nBefore placing the tree securely inthe stand, cut 1-2 from the base of thetrunk and place it in water immediate-ly; keep the stand lled because heatedrooms dry out live trees rapidly.

nSet up the tree and decorations awayfrom windows and doors where clear ac-cess may be needed in an emergency; andaway from replaces, radiators, spaceheaters, heating vents and other heatsources.

nUse lights that have the label of anindependent testing laboratory; check thepackaging some lights are only for in-door use.

nDont use any strings of lights thatare frayed or broken.

n Dont connect more than threestrands of mini light sets and a maximumof 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs.

nNever use lit candles to decorate thetree and keep lit candles away from deco-rations and anything that can burn.

nPlace the tree as close to an electri-cal outlet as possible so that cords are notrunning long distances. Do not place rugsover cords to disguise them; this can be-come an increased re hazard.

n Always unplug all Christmas treelights before leaving home or going tobed.

nDispose of the tree promptly whenChristmas is over or when the tree startsto drop needles. Dont leave it in the houseor garage.

Many Americans associateinfluenza with the fall, but youmay be surprised to learn thatduring many flu seasons, influ-enza activity doesnt peak until winter or early spring. In fact, virus activity peaked in Febru-ary or later in approximatelyhalf of the past 35 flu seasons.

That is why the AmericanLung Association is spreadingthe message about the impor-tance of influenza vaccinationthroughout the winter monthsand beyond as part of its Facesof Influenza campaign. Every-one 6 months of age and olderis recommended for annual im-

Just because it isnt summerdoesnt mean you should putaway those sunglasses.

Most people think sunglassesare just for the bright summer sun,but damaging ultraviolet (UV)rays are present year-round, saysDr. Jenna Lewis, an optometristwith VSP Vision Care, the larg-est not-for-prot vision benets

company in the United States. Infact, the sun sits lower in the skyduring winter, providing moreexposure.

While Americans are prettygood about wearing sunglasses insummer, most tend to ignore thesuns harmful effects in the win-ter months. But UV rays are dan-gerous all year. Snow is reective, and up to 85 percent of the sunsUV rays are reected back up intothe eyes.

Those UV rays damage eyesthe same way they damage skin, and can cause cataracts, macu-lar degeneration and cancerousgrowths both inside and aroundthe eyes, all of which can causeblindness.

However, much of the dam-age the sun causes can be pre-vented simply by wearing sun-glasses that block 100 percent ofUV rays.

Start YoungUV damage is cumulative over

time and doesnt heal, so startprotecting your eyes from the sunnow. That includes making surechildren are outtted with sun-glasses and protecting eyes of allages from the sun all year.

Most UV damage occurs be-fore age 18, but less than 30 per-cent of children wear sunglasses.

    In the winter, parents arent

slathering their kids with sun-screen, and are instead bundlingthem up with coats and scarves, says Dr. Lewis. So sunglassesarent intuitively top of mind, butthey should be.

Check The LabelMake sure your sunglasses

are 99-100 percent UV-rated.Tinted sunglasses wont provideUV protection unless they have aUV rating on the label. Wearingtinted glasses that are not actu-ally protective allow the pupils todilate, which lets more radiationin the eyes than wearing no sun-glasses at all.

Also, the more coverage theframe provides, the more protec-tion you will receive. You mayalso want to get polarized lenses, which cut down on glare, if youlive in a snowy area or by water.

When the sun is shining on

the snow, its almost impossibleto see, let alone drive withoutsunglasses, cautions Dr. Lewis. And thats a real safety hazard.

Be Functional in StyleDifferent color lenses work

better for different conditions. For example, yellow lenses aregreat for skiing since they lterout blue light that can make fo-cusing difcult. Green lenses aregreat for general outdoor use, and brown/amber lenses enhancedepth perception, making themgood for driving and sports. Youcan learn more at www.vsp.com.Or see your local eye doctor, whocan help you nd the right shadesfor your needs -- particularly if you prefer the convenience ofprescription lenses.

Just remember as youre bun-dling up this winter to make sureyour eyes dont go naked!

Protect your eyes from the winter sun

Add a flu shot to your listof New Years resolutions

ton, who lived in the State of Washington,to come back to Sand Lake and help him. Itjst so happened that Harriet Eaton was ahome missionary.

Shortly after her arrival in Sand Lake, inthe smmer of 1942, Frank Allen and Har-riet Eaton attended the Old Settlers picnic intown. When the time came for reglars and visitors to speak a few words, Sister Eatonarose and openly proclaimed, I left this placea sinner and have retrned a child of God!

After the gathering, the rst one to seek outHarriet Eaton was her old-time friend, VitaGiddings Davies. They two were close friendsfrom then on.

When Snday came, Frank Allen andHarriet Eaton attended the only reglar Prot-estant chrch in town. They sat near the backof the bilding. When the pastor preached toher liking, Sister Eaton wold say, Amen!Qite a few heads trned to see who new inchrch.

After the service, some yong people askedher if she wold come and speak for the yothgrop. She said she wold and also bring hergitar. We were delighted, and told her so.She said, Come and see me. We agreed todo so. Then she asked, When? This is theway the Tesday evening meetings began inFrank Allens home. She started s right off

stdying the Book of Genesis. The blessedword of God began to open to s. We learnedhow to pray. She ministered to s the wholeconsel of God.

Since we were told we cold bring orfriends, that is what we did. Dring that verysnowy winter, a good nmber of teenagersand some older women made their way to theAllen home on a reglar basis.

We were still attending the other chrchand did so for qite some time. Later meet-ings were held in varios homes in the area.Eventally the break came with the otherchrch. Those of s who were stdying nderSister Eatons capable ministry were passingon things we had learned from her. All thistime we were teaching Snday School classesin the chrch where we had been attending.

Finally the pastor had to tell s to make achoice. Then the new gathering drew morepeople together.

As the grop increased in size, the Lordallowed s to rent the local Grange Hallbilding for or Snday night meetings. Thatonly made s eager to have or own bild-ing. We wanted one that wold be sed onlyfor the Glory of God. The search began 1.5lots were prchased from Charles and MadeWilliams on East Lake Street in the village of

Sand Lake.Local school districts were consolidating with the village schools. The smaller, rralbildings were being sold for homes or bsi-nesses. Some were being tom down, otherswere being moved. A bilding was fond nearEntrican, some 30 miles northeast from SandLake. It was called the Cherry Dell School, sonamed becase it sat in a grove of black cher-ry trees. The bilding was 24 x 40 ft. and insond condition.

The Cherry School Dell school bilding was bilt in 1882. It contined to be in sentil this contry school became consolidat-ed with a larger school in the nearby village. There were an average of 35 or 40 ppils each year. Many social events as well as thingspertaining to the school itself were held eachyear.

After mch research and prayer, this for-mer school bilding was prchased in 1946.Sister Eaton had gone back to the state ofWashington to live with her son and grand-son. Evelyn Rsh, who had come for a two-week visit with Harriet Eaton in 1944 stayedon to help in the gospel work and later be-came the pastor of the Sand Lake chrchgrop. Verta Kibbe was her assistant. Mr.John Hardy, a local carpenter, was hired tohelp get the strctre ready to move, to laythe fondation on the new cite, as well as tak-ing care of details later. He was ably assistedby men of the chrch. Finally the time camefor the actal moving of the bilding. Sinceit was a good-sized edice, and the distanceconsiderable, this wasnt completed in a day.The rote had to be careflly mapped, as of-

ten narrow bridges prevented going a certainway.

Then there was the hindrance of telephoneand electric wires. The bilding was too tall topass nder many of these, so lines had to bect. At one time, this necessitated going a fewmiles at midnight, when the crrent as lesslikely to be needed.

All in all it was a welcome sight to the in-terested parties to see the awaited bildingmoving soth on old Highway 131 and into

the village of Sand Lake. The bilding had tobe completely re-plastered and a new chim-ney built. The rst service was held in thebilding on Dec. 31, 1946.

Throgh the years, there have been dif-ferent improvements made to the bilding. A basement was dg ot, and a frnace in-stalled. The entry was changed from the frontto the side, a west wing added, bathroomsinstalled, a cement ramp pored, classroomsadded, pstairs and in the basement, and newwindows prchased.

The bilding has changed, and many ofthe original grop of believers have movedaway or relocated. Many have died in faith.New ones have come in and have taken theirplace in the meetings. The message preachedwhen the grop started has not changed.

The Chrch of the Fll Gospel has several

meetings a week, J-0-Y childrens meetingsdring the school year, Daily Vacation BibleSchool, and a yoth camp in the smmersince 1979. Three-day Labor Day Fellowshipmeetings, as well as the end-of-year anniver-sary gathering on New Years Eve. We alsohave the gospel

meetings at the Cedar Springs Metronnrsing home twice a month.

At this time Verta (Kibbe) Giddings, andGary Giddings are pastoring the meeting. There are capable elders and deacons, wor-ship leaders, and teachers.

The schedle of meetings are SndaySchool, Snday 10 a.m. followed by worshipservice at 11 a.m., Snday evening at 6 p.m.,J-0-Y meetings for children, dring the schoolyear, and Bible Stdy, on Wednesday 7 p.m.

    $100,000.00 at stake. Following a trial in a 2011

case, the Oakland County Probate Courts order

for distributing a one hundred thousand dollar($100,000.00) insurance policy award was ap-

pealed. Ms. J. Robinson had been killed in a two

car collision in 2009. The other driver, Ms. Dancy, had been at fault. Ms. Robinsons mother, Judith

Parent, had sued the owner of the vehicle for the

wrongful, negligent death of her daughter, on behalfof Ms. Robinsons four children. The owner carried

$100,000 in vehicle insurance. The trial judgeawarded all of it.

The players. Ms. Robinson had birthed fourchildren. Two of them, Jacob and Alexander, were

adults when Ms. Robinson was killed. Ms. Robin-

sons other two children, Keith and Bruce, were stillminors at the time she died. However they had been

legally adopted by Ms. Robinsons mother, Judith

Parent, before Ms. Robinsons death. She sued astheir representative.

Their relationship. Judith had not seen Jacob andAlexander for many years. She had taken it upon her-

self to file suit to look out primarily for the youngest

children, Keith and Bruce. But barely a month afterJudith filed suit Jacob showed up with an attorney.

After some confusion about who should really bethe executor of the estate, they agreed Jacob wouldbe substituted for Judith as the executor/personal

representative bringing the suit, and Jacobs lawyer

would be substituted for Judiths lawyer as officialattorney for the estate. When the Court decided to

distribute the money as proposed by Jacobs lawyer,

    Judith appealed.

The children were not close. At the trial Jacobhad contended that his mother had a long history of

substance abuse, including crack cocaine addiction,

which had led to termination of her parental rightsto her two youngest children, and that she had not

continued to parent them actively. However Judith

claimed that although Jacob may not have known

his mother much, Keith and Bruce had continuedto be close to her. She said neither adult child

had showed up for their mothers funeral and that

neither had had contact with her for years. On the

other hand, she stated Keith and Bruce had daily

contact with their mother for years before her deathand had continued to call her mom even after the

adoption. But no other witnesses were called to tes-

tify. The appeals court believed that the truth aboutthis contradiction was crucial to deciding how to

    distribute the money.

Damages. It isnt a question of need. Wrongful death

damages consider the relationships, and the degree

and type of loss. Spouses and children are the usual, intended, recipients because of the expected close

relationship between them. But the actual felt lossis important. Should we give money to kids who

havent seen their mother in fifteen years? How

great was their grief? Should the money make upfor how their mother had treated them? Or will her

little children, who see her regularly, play with her,

show her love and feel love from her, feel a greaterloss?

The Appeals court said the lower court should haveheld a full hearing. It stated: there was no factual

record on which the trial court could have based an

assessment of the fairness and equitability of thedistribution considering the relative damages suf-

fered by each of the relevant persons and anindependent appellate assessment of the fairnessand equitability of the distribution is impossible

without an evidentiary record. It sent the case back

to the trial court for a full hearing.

The outcome. Judith Parent had wanted moremoney for the minor children, and less for the adult

children. She was probably happy to have the award

be reconsidered by the trial court. But she may havelost anyway because Keith and Bruce werent Ms.

Robinsons children. They were her brothers. Won-

der if that made a difference?
