Livestock farmers have beenblessed with great hay yields this sum-mer. Dairy farmers have reportedfantastic haylage yields in the rstthree crops resulting in limited stor-age space for the upcoming corn silageharvest. Most farms are expecting two

more hay harvests plus record corn si-lage yields of 20 to 25 tons per acre arepossible. United States Departmentof Agriculture (USDA) has estimatedthat Michigans corn crop will yield156 bushels per acre. This smasheslast years record Michigan corn yieldof 148 bushels per acre! Where can youput all this forage and the extra corn?

This is a great problem to have. Ifyou have not started already to makemore space than a great option is touse a silo bag. Bagging advantagesinclude lower capital cost, exibilityin storage and forage quality and lessstorage loss. You have a smaller feedout face, which can be an advantage inwarmer weather, especially for small-

er herds. Of course there are disadvan-tages include a larger footprint, higherout of pocket expense and handlingand disposal of the plastic. You musthave a good improved site for accessto the bags in poor weather.

For larger herds, bunker silos orpiles are the preferred storage op-tion. The feed out is faster to mixerwagons without waiting for mechani-cal unloading equipment. This ad-ditional storage is gained by addingextra square footage of concrete orasphalt. Each requires a prepared bed, which takes some advanced planning. The other option is to go higher withthe pile. This is limited by the feedout equipment and the steep sides forpacking with tractors. Safety is a con-

cern for both operations. If you are considering custom har-

vest of corn silage or renting a bagger, plan to line up the services early as thedemand may be great this year. Re-member that whole plant dry matter isthe best indicator of proper corn silage

maturity. Chop some samples to testyour corn. Some corn tasseled near thefourth of July, will be ready in mid tolate August. Several good papers andpresentations are on the Kansas StateUniversity silage web page found athttp://www.ksre.ksu.edu/pr_silage/.They include silage management, for-age storage economics, bagger advan-tages and silo safety.

Storing high moisture corn ispreferred on many livestock farms because then you do not have to paythe drying costs. Again bags can be a viable option for the extra crop stor-age. Producers are cautioned that thecrop is about two weeks advancedin maturity, and depending on the

weather, high moisture corn harvestcould quickly follow corn silage har- vest. The advanced maturity of thecorn crop may allow some farms to drythe corn crop for long term storage orsales. Widening basis at many eleva-tors may indicate the storage could betight with a big crop expected. Againconrming this space in advance isrecommended.

Having crops busting out of thebins is a good problem. Additional cropsales can help pay off some of thosepesky bills still hanging around from2009? With some advance planningharvest can go smoothly and safelyand we can enjoy record crops. If youhave any questions, please contact G.William Robb at (616) 994-4580.

Germs at school are nothing to sneezeat. According to the U.S. Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention, nearly 22 millionschool days are lost each year due to the com-mon cold and u. That may be why parents

worry as much about their children bringinghome germs as they do bad grades.

According to a study conducted by KeltonResearch for Seventh Generation, 82 per-cent of K-5 parents fret about germs in theirchildrens classrooms. Fortunately, that maynot have to happen.

Minimizing the number of disease-caus-ing germs that your children are exposed tois easier than you might think, says Dr. AlanGreene, best-selling author and pediatrician. The key to success is knowing where thegerms reside in the classroom and at home, and what to use to manage them.

Dr. Greene recommends using disinfec-tants that kill germs naturally to clean high-trafc areas such as desks, doorknobs andremote controls.

Because the average child contracts 6.5colds a year, Dr. Greene suggests taking thefollowing precautions to keep your childrenaway from germs:

Optimize the immune systemn Reap the benets of probiotics such as

those found in yogurt. A recent study showedthat children who had enough probioticsdaily throughout the cold and u season hada signicant reduction in the number of ill-nesses they contracted.n Be sure your child is getting plenty of

vitamin D from the sun, from food or froma supplement.n Build a strong foundation. Good food,

good sleep and good physical activity all helpthe immune system ourish.

    Reduce unnecessary exposure to harmfulgerms

n Teach children the key times to cleantheir hands in the classroom, including aftersneezing, coughing or using the restroom, upon leaving high-risk places (recess, nap-time, play stations) and before eating.n Stress the importance of not touching

the eyes, nose or mouth.n Demonstrate to your children how

to cover their mouths and noses for everycough and sneeze.n Sixty percent of teachers surveyed re-

quest that parents donate disinfecting wipesto the classroom. The ones from SeventhGeneration, considered the worlds mosttrusted brand of authentic and environ-mentally responsible products for a healthyhome, can kill 99.99 percent of germs natu-

rally with the active ingredient thymol, de-rived from the herb thyme.

For many adults, turn-ing 65 marks the beginningof a rewarding and active newtime in life. Some may focus ontravel and recreation or spend-ing more time with family andfriends. Others may think aboutlaunching a new business, start-ing a new career or going back to

    school.Regardless of what they de-

cide to do with their time, oneshared milestone for those turn-ing 65 is their eligibility to enrollin Medicare.

The transition from em-ployer-sponsored health insur-ance to Medicare can be nearlyseamless for those whose healthinsurance provider also offersMedicare plans, said Tom Paul, chief executive ofcer of United-Healthcare Medicare Solutions, which serves nearly 9 million--or one-in-ve--Medicare bene-ciaries nationwide.

For other new enrollees, however, enrolling in Medicarecan be a challenge. To makeenrollment as clear as possible,Paul encourages adults turning65 to focus on three key things:the types of Medicare plans thatare available; the enrollmentprocess; and annual opportuni-ties to make adjustments to cov-erage.

    1. The ABCs-and D-of Medi-care: Medicare has four mainparts.n Part A helps pay for inpa-

tient care in hospitals, skillednursing facilities or hospice andfor home health care if certain

    conditions are met.

n Part B helps pay for medi-cally necessary outpatient ser-vices, such as doctors visits.

n Part C is also known asMedicare Advantage. These pri-vate plans are offered by insur-ers such as UnitedHealthcareand are approved by Medicareto provide all Part A and Part Bservices, and they usually pro-vide Part D and other additionalbenets.

n Part D covers both brand-name and generic prescription

    drugs.

Medicare Supplement, orMedigap, plans are also availableto help ll in some of the gaps ofPart A and Part B coverage.

    2. Enrolling in Medicare: Adults who are turning 65 andhave not yet begun receivingSocial Security or Railroad Re-tirement benets can apply forMedicare three months beforethe month of their 65th birth-day, during the month of theirbirthday, or within three monthsfollowing their birthday. Eligible

individuals can enroll in Part A

at no cost. They can add Part Bcoverage for a monthly premiumpaid to the federal government.Part D is also a voluntary elec-tion with an additional monthlypremium. Those enrolled in bothPart A and Part B can choose toreceive this coverage throughan all-in-one Part C--betterknown as Medicare Advantage--plan, which combines Parts Aand B and also often includesPart D.

    3. What to Expect in Future

    Years: Each year, Medicare en-

rollees can make changes to theirMedicare coverage during the Annual Election Period (AEP)from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31. The newhealth reform law changes thedates of the AEP beginning in2011, when it will last from Oct.15 to Dec. 7.
