The Greens & Grounds Department has been getting the course ready for the season and the weather is starting to help us get the course into shape. As we start managing the course to weather the summer heat ahead, you may notice cultural practices around the property that we hope will ensure we produce the best product possible.
Spring OverseedingWe have started to fill voids in the thin rough areas by implementing a spike and seed operation. We aerify the affected areas then follow it up by spreading fescue seed and starter fertilizer and finish the area by dragging the seed and fescue into the aerification holes while breaking down the plugs. This operation should yield a denser rough around playing surfaces that struggle to fill in that could be a result from poor growing conditions as well as excess compaction.
Hand-Watering & “Syringing” Since May 13th, we have experienced a dramatic shift in the climate from cold, frost-stricken mornings to warm, sunny, windy, and dry conditions with very little to no precipitation. Given the sudden shift in weather, many of you may have seen myself and our Assistant Superintendents out on the course hand-watering greens, fairways, and tee boxes to supply the turf with the moisture necessary to make it through the afternoons. By hand-watering, we are able to provide an accurate volume of moisture to very specific “hydrophobic” spots in need of replenishment without soaking a large area with sufficient moisture via the overhead irrigation sprinklers. This will not only address turfgrass health needs and uniformity across the entire golf course, but furthermore provide the fastest and firmest playing conditions possible and minimize our water consumption from a financial and environmental impact perspective. During the afternoons, there are times that myself and my team need to access the putting surfaces for a brief 1-2 minute period to “syringe” the putting greens. “Syringing” is a technique used at premier level golf clubs to apply a very thin film of moisture to the top grass canopy of the putting surface to cool the air temperature and allow the stressed turf to breathe for 30-45 minutes during stressful weather conditions, all while avoiding applying any moisture into the soil and keeping the green surfaces firm to incoming approach shots and lessening disease pressure. This is a very laborious task for the Greens & Grounds team, but one well worth the effort to provide the best conditioning possible every day of the week. My team & I are very cognizant of golf around us and coming up the hole as we hand-water and syringe. We are always looking for gaps in play to do our watering in order to avoid disrupting play as much as possible. However, there are times during hot stretches and packed tee sheets where we must briefly disrupt play in order to quickly syringe and cool off playing surfaces in order to ensure that we do not lose turf under immense stress and make it through the day until the sun sets. We please ask that if one of our team members is on a putting green and watering to please wait for 1-2 minutes while we perform the work we need to before hitting approach shots into the greens.

We have experienced a handful of incidents where golf balls have come flying into greens in very close proximity to our staff members, and we do not wish for anyone to get hurt. We apologize for any disruptions to your round this upcoming year, but please know that we are performing this brief work in order to provide the best playing conditions and experience possible here at Great River.
Course & Driving Range Etiquette As the grass hitting bays are being made available for use on the driving range tee, we ask that you use the USGA’s Recommended Divot Patterns as a guide when practicing divot etiquette.
On the left, the “concentrated” divot pattern is not conducive to plant growth and leaves no turf for players that use the range following your practice session. The “scattered” divot pattern also is not efficient due to the inconsistency of remaining turf which can make it difficult for subsequent golfers to find a clean teeing space. The “linear” divot pattern is ideal for both divot recovery (the remaining turf has a much lesser distance to grow
laterally and fill in) and for the next golfer to have dense turf to hit from. Along with Jason Loomis, Tom Rosati, and the Outside Operations team, we are working on programs to begin placing divot sand bottles in the golf carts and ensuring that they are sanitized prior to and following each round. In the interim and as always, we prefer that any divots still intact be replaced over filling with divot sand if possible to help limit the number of voids on the fairway surfaces and shorten recovery times. We have seen a marked improvement in the number of ball marks being repaired by the members towards the end of May, and we greatly appreciate your efforts to help maintain our putting surfaces. However, there is still much room for improvement as we enter the busiest months of the year, and we would greatly appreciate your continued help. If you are unable to locate your ball mark, please take the time to find another ball mark in need of repair. Repairing ball marks will ensure smoother & healthier putting surfaces throughout the golf season, allowing the Greens & Grounds team more time to continue improving all other areas of the golf course and property.
Our entire Greens & Grounds team is very excited for the upcoming month of June and continuing to have the course ready and in the best condition possible for the upcoming 2020 season. We look forward to seeing everyone out on the course.

Tournament Club
Twilight League to Start June 10th
We were hoping for the ability to conduct a shotgun start with the latest update from the CSGA. Unfortunately, that did not happen in the newest regulations. We will start play June 10th using tee times and split tees until we can have shotgun starts.
The Great River Wednesday Night Twilight League will continue! We are hopeful to kickoff the season Wednesday, June 10th. This year we have made some new improvements to build member camaraderie andadd some friendly competition.
Two or Three players will form a team, of which two play each week in a round-robin format. Matches are 9-hole fourball matches and begin each week with tee times starting at 5:00pm. Teams will play a fourball match against each team in the league, earning points each week. At the end of the season, a selected number of teams (based on participation) with the highest point total will make it into the playoffs. The playoffs will be a single elimination bracket to decide the champions.
Twilight League is $125 per player which includes league gift, prizes, and end of season dinner. Registration is closed, but feel free to email Jason at [email protected] with any questions.
Margarita MixerSunday, June 14th, 3:30 pm StartGrab your spouse, significant other, or anyone you want to spend 9-holes with and sign up for our next Mixed Golf event of the season. You can sign up with another couple or the golf staff can pair you with another couple.
The cost is $65 per couple which includes prizes, dinner, and of course a Margarita! There will be no additional green fees for your spouse/other.

Thursday Night Ladies Golf Clinic & 4-Hole ChallengeFirst night will be June 18th, but subject to change due to CDC restrictions
Thursdays for our Great River ladies just got a little exciting. This year we will be our inaugural 4-Hole Lady Golfers. Each Thursday the professional staff will provide a ½ hour clinic starting at 5:30 pm. After the clinic, we will pair ladies up into groups and send you out on the course for a four-hole challenge.
The mission of this program is to introduce new golfers to the game, get former golfers back in the game, and to meet other women with similar interests. This is a fun and encouraging golf environment and every lady golfer, member, spouse, or friend is welcome to participate. Participants are encouraged to stay after golf for everyone’s favorite part, drinks and dinner!

Hello!
We hope you are continuing to stay safe and healthy during this unprecedented time. Our Events Team has been working diligently with clients to change event dates due to COVID-19. We have also been adjusting to a “new normal” way of operating and responding to challenges we have never faced before.
Now that we are starting Phase 1 of re-opening, we do see the light at the end of the tunnel! We will be hosting a few intimate wedding ceremonies for couples in June, who were unable to have their weddings because of restrictions. In addition, we are closely following the CDC guidelines, and the Governor's Executive Orders for hosting events.
Every day, we are reminded that we are in this together, and appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate during this challenging time.
We look forward to hosting special events soon!
