“Here comes the boat. Everyone wave!” says our guide. Our group runs down to the river bank just as the S.S. Maria Theresa glides past on the Danube River, on its way from the town of Dürnstein to Melk, in Austria. As we wave from the river bank, we see a few arms stretch lazily from sun loungers on the river cruiser’s top deck and wave back.


RIVER CRUISES

The boat has been our home for the past four days so it seems strange to watch it pass and continue down the river without us – but we plan to catch up with it later. Myself and some fellow passengers are cycling the 30 kilometres through the Wachau valley as part of an organized excursion.

We cycle at a brisk pace along the river, passing through quiet villages with narrow streets, past vineyards and farmland and along cycle tracks beside both river and road. After an exhilarating couple of hours, we finally meet the boat at Melk, to be greeted back on board with cooling refreshments.

This eight-day Enchanting Danube Uniworld river cruise journey started in Budapest four days earlier. After a peaceful overnight on board – the boat is docked a few minutes’ walk from the Chain Bridge in the centre – we were all set for the first official day of excursions.

The first morning, there’s a choice of three Budapest tours – a city tour, a bike tour, or a ‘do as the locals do’ walking tour, which I select. On this first experience, our local guide, Ferenc, brings my group to the metro, where we take a short train ride to Fehérvári Road Market.

This is where locals shop daily for fresh produce and Ferenc talks us through everything from colourful arrangements of fruit and vegetables, to favourite meats such as pork sausages and even horse sausages. Hungary has a lot of unusual delicacies, such as beef tongue or bacon fat, and we marvel at a stall selling all types of pickles – including pickled baby watermelons.Throughout the morning, Ferenc tells us about daily life in the city, showing us one of the famous ‘ruin bars’, where dilapidated buildings have been reinvented as pubs. He takes us to an antique bookshop to see books dating back to the 1600s, and then on to a café for coffee and cake. Back on board, cruise guests dress up for the opening

night gala dinner and we enjoy fine dining and wines as the boat sets off for Bratislava in Slovakia. Unlike on an ocean cruise, I am surprised how smooth the journey is – the only clink of glasses was fellow guests toasting a pleasant voyage.

The next morning on a walking tour of Bratislava, we learn how the small city was once the capital of Hungary and see St. Martin’s Cathedral, where many Habsburg rulers were crowned over a period of 200 years. After discovering the city’s highlights and some free time to explore and shop, I head back to the cruise for a tasty lunch and the journey on to Vienna in Austria.

This is a scenic part of the Danube, and I take to the top sun deck of the boat for the afternoon, admiring the wooden fishing cottages on stilts lining the river and dream of lazy afternoons of fishing, as we glide along in the warm breeze.

For our first night in Vienna, cruise passengers are treated to a private classical music concert in a historic palace, and a ‘Morning with the Masters’ private tour at the Kunsthistorisches Museum the following morning. Destinations like Vienna can be busy with tourists, especially when there are other river cruisers in, so to have these exclusive experiences is something special.

During the week, I mix guided tours, all included in the cruise, with free time to explore. There are buffet breakfasts and lunches and a daily changing dinner menu with excellent wine pairings. One of my favourite days is in Salzburg, with a walking tour followed by free time to explore. The final stop is in Passau in Bavaria, Germany where the Danube meets the Inn and Ilz rivers. Admiring the three rivers, I realize that from a taster of four countries over eight days, I have enjoyed an unlimited number of memorable experiences.
