Joshua’s call & commission from the Lord
1. Moses aide2. Member of 12 spies3. Appointed to lead Israel into Canaan4. Commissioned by the Lord to lead his people
Joshua’s victory
1. Crossed the flooded Jordan2. Conquered Jericho
Joshua 7:2-5 (NIV) 2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth Aven to the east of Bethel, and told them, "Go up and spy out the region." So the men went up and spied out Ai.
3 When they returned to Joshua, they said, "Not all the people will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary all the people, for only a few men are there."
Joshua 7:2-5 (NIV) 4 So about three thousand men went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai, 5 who killed about thirty-six of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
Joshua 7:10 (NIV) 10 The LORD said to Joshua, "Stand up! What are you doing down on your face?
How to “Stand up” from defeat?
1. Stop questioning God’s character
Joshua 7:7 (NIV) 7 And Joshua said, "Ah, Sovereign LORD, why did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan!
Consider the good things God had done:
1. God sent Moses to bring them out of slavery
2. God opened the red sea for them
3. God fed them with manna when they were hungry
4. God gave water from a rock
5. God led them across the flooded Jordan
6. God enabled them to conquer mighty Jericho
Now after one defeat… Joshua blames God
Joshua 7:10-13 (NIV) 10 The LORD said to Joshua, "Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? 11 Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions.
Joshua 7:10-13 (NIV) 12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.
Joshua 7:10-13 (NIV) 13 "Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, 'Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: That which is devoted is among you, O Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove it.

2. Stop focusing on this one defeat
Joshua 7:8 (NIV) 8 O Lord, what can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies?
Don’t waste energy trying to cover up failure. Learn from your failures and go
on to the next challenge. It’s okay to fail. If you’re not failing, you’re not
growing. ─H. Stanley Judd

When achievers fail, they see it as a momentary event, not a lifelong
epidemic.

3. Stop worrying about public opinion
Joshua 7:9 (NIV) 9 The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. What then will you do for your own great name?"
Acts 13:22 (NIV) 22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’
Ninety percent (90%) of all those who fail are not actually defeated. They
simply quit.

“I want to live amongst normal
people. And I wish underprivileged
children didn’t have to suffer pain.”

“I wanted to sing, but I didn’t have the money
to learn. I looked online for vocal
instructors and found some, but none were
willing to teach for free. In the end, I did find someone, but I
only had one lesson a month, so it was really
hard to get better.”

In regards to his final performance on ‘Korea’s
Got Talent’, he stated, “I’m intimidated by all of the sudden attention, but I’m going to do my best. I’m not sure if I can win; the results aren’t up to
me, but I think if I put in the hard work, it’ll pay
off.”

Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close
they were to success when they gave up.
