End of BrezhnevEnd of BrezhnevBrezhnev’s health was poor
during 1970’s, suffering from two stroked in 1975 and 1977.
Brezhnev was increasingly absent from the centre of events in Moscow.
Early November 1982, Brezhnev was made to stand for hours in sub zero conditions in the Red Square for the annual commemoration of the Revolution. He had a final stroke and died in his sleep on the 10th.

Chernenko as his successor despite being over 70.
Chernenko was in charge of Brezhnev’s private office. He was also a member of both sectariat and Politburo.

range of issues and made implicit criticisms of Brezhnev regime.
Andropov campaigned against corruption which was seen as an attack on Brezhnev, especially with his family's reputation. More importantly, was seen as an attack on Chernenko, who was closely associated with Brezhnev.
Andropov was backed by the KGB and military during a meeting of the Politburo where his leadership was decided.

Soviet war planes shot down Korean Airlines passenger plane killing 269 people.
Andropov was on holiday at the time. The decision to shoot down KAL 007 was taken at local military level in accordance with prescribed rules of engagement.
There was a huge international outcry, especially after Kremlin’s denial of the incident. They then denied shooting down the planed. Eventually they finally admitted to it.
