Kick the Salt... With Portable Exchange Water Softener Unitby Ken PetersonLet’s talk about conventional water softener usage environmental problems in Rio Verde. It’s estimated that Rio Verde residents discharge 45,000 pounds of salt annually into our sewer system from regenerating water softeners. Now that’s a big problem to our local environment since we use the effluent water from our treatment plant to irrigate our golf courses. It costs about $12,000 per month to mitigate the effects of the salinity (salts) and bicarbonates retained in the effluent water used for irrigation—simply put, grass doesn’t like salts and bicarbonates! The Salt SolutionThere is a solution for homeowners to help with this problem---convert your conventional water softener to a (PE) portable exchange type softener. The Living Green Committee is encouraging homeowners to subscribe to the PE softener program offered by Rayne Water Conditioning for $39.25 per month.Rayne Water Special OfferRayne Water has a special offer to change over your existing units: free removal and disposal of existing unit, free installation of the (PE) unit, and free service for the first month before starting the normal rate on the second month. Rayne Water representative Rick Greene will be in the Community Center lobby from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov 15, to sign up new customers. During this sign-up period, the LGV Committee will offer an additional $50 incentive to the first five new customers to convert to a PE softener.Your PE unit is exchanged every 28 days with a newly recharged unit and you don’t have to buy or handle any salt! This service is available for both seasonal (no fee while away) and full time residents. Questions: Call Ken Peterson 471-7905 or Rayne Water Rep Rick Greene direct at 602-348-1028.

It becomes harder to taste spices and the elements of the foods that we recognize, which can make eating less enjoyable. The good news is there are ways to awaken everyone’s taste buds without loading dishes with sugar, salt and fat. Here are a few nutrition and healthy eating tips to make your family’s favorite holiday recipes healthier, according to a nutrition expert:1. Provide a touch of sweetness with natural spices and ingredients Reducing sugar by half of what the regular recipe calls for and supplementing the sweetness with citrus, vanilla, cinnamon or nutmeg — whatever works best with the recipe — is a an effective healthy, yet tasty, cooking best practice. Even honey and molasses can be used to add a touch of healthier sweetness to a favorite dessert or holiday beverage. And fresh or unsweetened frozen fruit is a great way to add a little natural sweetness, not to mention presentation appeal.2. Substitute the fat with healthy alternatives When baking, unsweetened applesauce, mashed bananas and prune puree can make a surprisingly delightful substitute for fatty ingredients; just substitute half the fat with the desired substitute. Instead of using whole milk, use skim milk in dessert and drink recipes. There’s even a healthy alternative for gravy. Heat fat-free, low-sodium broth— or drippings with the fat removed — and slowly add a concoction of mixed flour and cold skim milk to the broth until desired thickness is achieved. Season to your family’s liking.3. Slash the salt with lower-sodium optionsSubstitute salt with fresh herbs and flavored vinegars. When it comes to sodium-heavy condiments, such as mustard, pickles and ketchup, try fresh tomatoes, salsas or cucumber slices. Sometimes even lower-sodium versions of condiments are available — you just have to be diligent about checking the nutrition label when shopping.Delicious and healthy don’t need to be oxymorons — the two can actually compliment one another.Vicki Beseke, Executive Director

Got Old Overgrown Plants?

Know When to Prune or Replaceby Noelle JohnsonYou have undoubtedly seen an old, overgrown shrub filled with mostly leafless branches that rarely flower anymore. Or perhaps it is an aged succulent that has brown patches that are slowly encroaching onto the upper parts of the plant from the base. So, what is the solution for plants that no longer add decorative value to our landscape? While some woody plants such as Texas sage or oleander can be rejuvenated by severely pruning them back, not all plants respond favorably to this and are able to grow out again. Let’s take a look at shrubs and succulents found throughout Rio Verde landscape and talk about whether you should prune severely or when it’s best to replace.Renewal PruningMany shrubs can be rejuvenated by severely pruning them back, which gets rid of old, woody growth and stimulates the production of new branches which will flower more (in the case of flowering shrubs). It is helpful to think of severe renewal pruning as the “fountain of youth” for many plants. This type of pruning is best done in spring, once the weather begins to warm up. Shrubs that respond well to this include bougainvillea, jojoba, lantana, oleander, Texas sage, and yellow bells. It’s important to note that not all shrubs will come back from this method, but the pruning didn’t kill the shrub – it only hastened the demise of the plant that was already in progress. If this happens, replace it with another.Time to ReplaceThere are some plants that don’t respond well to renewal pruning or where that isn’t possible to do in the case of succulents. In this case, the solution is simple – take them out and replace them with a younger version of the same plant.Examples of plants that are better removed and replaced include aloe, desert spoon, red yucca (hesperaloe), rosemary, and prickly pear cactus. When you think about it, the cost isn’t very high when you consider the beauty that these plants added to your landscape for eight years or more.
