161. It was moved by Mr. Camalich, seconded by Mr. Quintero

and carried unanimously, that the Board of Trustees accepted the minutes of August 13, 2003 as presented. There were no objections for a unanimous consent. Motion passed.

162. It was moved by Ms. Martinez, seconded by Mr. Mendez and

carried unanimously, that the Board of Trustees accepted the minutes of August 21, 2003 as presented. There were no objections for a unanimous consent. Motion passed.

G. Presentations

- Verizon Awards RHC Foundation $50,000 for Learning

Assistance Center, Technology Upgrades

Lou Banas, Verizon’s External Affairs Manager, and Kay Hudnall presented the Rio Hondo College Foundation’s $50,000 grant check from the Verizon Foundation. The grant will enhance the services of the Learning Assistance Center by enabling students to work with state-of-the-art educational materials both on and off campus. The Verizon Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, Inc.

- Foundation Update (Kay Hudnall/Cheryl Romero) Rio Hondo College Foundation’s Board President Cheryl Romero and Kay Hudnall updated the Board on the Foundation’s successes and ongoing goals and objectives. - Title V Grant, Teacher Preparation Initiative and Partnership

with Whittier College The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded a $2.7 million Title V Cooperative Grant in Teacher Education to both Rio Hondo and Whittier College to help educate more future bilingual, bicultural teachers. Dr. Kate Will was presented with a certificate to mark this new partnership.

1. College Services a. Purchase Order Report The Board accepted the Purchase Order Report for purchases for the preceding 60 days. b. Payroll Warrant Report The Board of Trustees accepted the Payroll Warrant Report for the month of August, 2003. c. Quarterly Financial Status Report The Board of Trustees approved the Quarterly Financial Report for the period ending June 30, 2003. 2. Authorization for Out-of-State Travel and Conferences The Board approved the following staff and Board Members to attend the following educational conferences: Kip Whelan to travel to Washington D.C. to visit various museums, art galleries and historic sites, September 18-22, 2003. Ellie Bewley to travel to Earlham College to attend Board of Trustees meeting, October 23-25, 2003.

Larry Waugh and Lemuel Williams to attend the Accounting Colloquium in Albuquerque, New Mexico, October 29- November 1, 2003. Gail Chabran to travel to London, England October 1-10, 2003 as the Coordinator of the Study Abroad Program. Katie O’Brien to attend the Center for formation in the Community Colleges, in Dallas Texas to learn new and innovative methods in providing EOPS services to our students, October 3-6, 2003.

4. Marketing Videos 167. It was moved by Mr. Camalich, seconded by Mr. Quintero and carried, that the Board of Trustees approved the services of VMA to create marketing videos. Ms. Martinez abstained. Mr. Mendez stated that he would like distribution of marketing video and Mr.

It was moved by Mr. Mendez, seconded by Mr. Camalich and carried unanimously, that the Board of Trustees approved the new grant award of $586, 592, and authorized the Administration to execute contracts on behalf of the District. It was moved by Mr. Mendez seconded by Mr. Quintero and carried unanimously, that the Board of Trustees adopt the Resolution authorizing Tax Deferred Services to be the Third Part administrator for the Deferred Compensation 457 Plan. There were no objections for a unanimous consent. Motion passed.
