March 2020 2019-2020 4-H Year Ages

CLOVERBUDS: 5 to 8, years old AND in Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd grade (Born in 2011, 2012, 2013 or 2014)

NOVICE: 9 to 11 years old or 8 years old AND in the 3rd grade. (Born in 2008, 2009, 2010 or born in 2011 AND in 3rd grade)

JUNIOR: 12 and 13 years old or 11 years old AND in 6th grade. (Born in 2006, 2007 or born in 2008 AND in the 6th grade)

SENIOR: 14 to 18 years old OR 13 years old AND in 8th grade (Born in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 or born 2006 AND in 8th grade) Youth who are 19 on or by December 31 of the current 4-H year

(2019) are NOT eligible to enroll as a 4-H member. If you were born in 2000 or before, you are too old to enroll as a member for the 2019-

2020 4-H year. We would love to have you as a leader/ helper!

Did you know? The overall purpose of the 4-H Cloverbud program is to foster

the development of life skills which are essential for the cognitive, social, emotional and physical maturation, of kindergarten through 2nd graders by providing a unique

educational opportunity. Children in these grades are a distinct audience for 4-H, with unique learning characteristics and

developmental needs different from older children and youth served through 4-H membership. As a result, the 4-H

Cloverbuds program is designed with specific educational objectives and program policies focused on the kindergarten -

2nd grade child.

REMINDER Event Registration Process: • All 4-H event registrations MUST be

completed with club leader. • Organizational Leader signature is required. • If the event has a fee, please submit one

club check for all attendees.

Registration is Now Open for Youth Get Away in Glorietta

on April 17-19. The theme for YGA is Inside Out. During this weekend event,

participants will have a chance to learn about a variety of projects, contests and

leadership, and will participate in community service projects.

Senior 4-H’ers can take part in Youth Get-Away by serving as Counselors and

Counselors in Training (CIT). Contact your club leader for registration

information and applications.

Next meeting Rio Arriba County 4-H Council will be on Saturday, March 7th at 1 pm at in

Rancheros 4-H Club News The Gallina Rancheros held our monthly meeting on February 3, 2020. We were fortunate enough to have Marcella come to our meeting and teach us all about jewelry making. We made key chains and bracelets. It was lots of fun. Thank you Marcella!!!

Black Bears 4-H Club News

The Rangers 4-H Club News The Rangers 4-H Club held our monthly meeting on

February 9th. At our meeting we discussed how some of our members enjoyed spending time at The Senior Leadership

Retreat. It was the first time at the retreat for one of our members and the last for another. Ashley Tafoya attended the National Healthy Living Summit in Washington D.C. We had 3 members attend 4-H Day at the Round House. When I asked

Bayler Faulkner what her favorite part was she said “The chance to see Legislation in action. It is something I use quite a

bit of in 4-H.” I also received a special gift from Ashley and Logan Tafoya to help me do my club reporting. A camera! Our

next meeting is scheduled to be held 3/29/20.

Ranch Hands 4-H Club News The Ranch Hands 4-H Club has had a busy start to the new year. Officers for 2019-2020 are: President – Rosalie Martinez Vice President – Gabriel Martinez Secretary – Arianna Valdez Treasurer – Evan Trujillo Reporter – Kambrie Martinez Parliamentarian- Justin Abeyta Song & Recreation Leader – Peyton Martinez

We have been busy teaching our new members what 4-H is all about. We made suncatcher ornaments for the hospital to distribute to patients over the Christmas holiday and made Valentine’s gifts for friends and family members. We are also planning our next community service and fundraiser for the spring and looking forward to an exciting year ahead!

Bobcats 4-H Club News Today (2-19-20) at our 4-H meeting we had installation of

officers. Before the meeting started we had a potluck, including some delicious food. After that we said the 4-H

pledge, and Ms. Coriz gave us details about our jobs. This list contains of all the officers and their jobs.

Young Guns 4-H Club News The officers for the 2019-2020 4-H year are: President- Brooke Trujillo, Vice President - Stetson Trujillo, Secretary - Colette Bibeault, Treasurer - Chantel Bibeault, Reporter - Yaritza Torres, Historian - Cassidy Jimenez, Parliamentarian - Belita Martinez, Recreational Leader - Reed Trujillo. Everyone is getting busy with their indoor projects, riding, working with and or getting ready to purchase their fair animals. Attention Exhibitors: 2020 Official Tagging Dates have been set. It is a requirement to have your project animals tagged and inspected during designated dates in order to exhibit at the Rio Arriba County Fair which will be held, July 29-August 2, 2020. Planning to Exhibit your 4-H Project Animal?

Enrolled in a Livestock 4-H Project?

Livestock exhibitors are required to attend the designated tagging dates and to complete a

Livestock Nomination Certificate to designate their project animals. 4-H Leaders and FFA advisors will be asked to sign the completed certificates after the tagging to complete the nomination process. In the

months leading up to the County Fair, exhibitors will be asked to complete an entry form confirming show

intentions and identifying the number of livestock pens needed.

Keep in Mind: NO animals will be tagged outside of

specified dates or off site. Exhibitor need not be present at tagging, as long as,

proper paperwork is completed and sent with designated representative.

Tags will cost $3.50 Tag Replacement pricing: 1st replacement $3.50;

2nd and beyond $4.

Enrolled in the 4-H Rodeo Project?

By State Rodeo Rules, all contestants must have personal accident insurance and a signed and completed rodeo waiver in

the State 4-H Office 15 days prior to the participant’s first rodeo of the current

year in order for the member to compete in Sanctioned 4-H Rodeos.

This includes the completion of the rodeo safety course. If hauling, obtain hauling certificate.

Enrolled in a 4-H Horse Project? Members looking to participate in 4-H Sanctioned Horse Shows are required to submit a Horse Certificate for their 4-H project horse. Horse Certificates need to be done every year or renewed every year with approval of the County Agent. The horse certificate is a form similar to a registration form. You can find it on the 4-H website under “Forms and Publications.” They are due on May 1 to the County Extension Office (not the State 4-H Office).

Healthy living in our communities are often overlooked. As a New Mexico State Healthy Living Ambassador, I, Ashley Tafoya, would like to change that. Partnered with some Rio Arriba Schools and the local 4-H staff, we are creating a healthy living program in our county. Our goal is to educate our youth about the risks and dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, including vaping. If you are or know of any youth between the ages of 13-18, 4-H or non-4-H members, that are interested in serving as a Rio Arriba Healthy Living Ambassador please feel free to contact me at ashleytafoya2002@gmail.com or Marcella Talamante. 4-H Dress Code Reminder: As participants in and representatives of the New Mexico 4-H Youth Development Program, clothing guidelines have been established for your involvement in county, district, state and national 4-H

Guest Etiquette: When using buildings for 4-H meetings, contests, workshops, etc. follow policy use; cleanup the area you use and send a Thank You note!

REMINDER With a full Calendar of Events, keep in mind, ALL ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEED TO BE SCREENED AND APPROVED BEFORE registering for an event. If there is a break in service, they will need to complete the screening process to be eligible to enroll as a leader.

NEW starting the 2019-2020 4-H Year! All 4-H Volunteers will be required to complete the

training, 4-H Working With Minors, each year prior to working with youth.

Annual training renewal will begin each October 1st when enrollments begin.

Trainings will be available in multiple formats, including online and face-to-face trainings.
