Energy rating labels can assist in selecting an energy efficient gas heating appliance. The Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority (EECA) recommend flued gas heating appliances that have a 4 star or greater rating by the Australian Gas Association (AGA) as these have earned the ENERGY STAR® mark.
The AGA Energy Rating label shows three important pieces of information:
Clean & Efficient Heating
Gas is green, fast and reliableFor areas of NZ where natural gas isn’t available, LPG is available delivered to your doorstep in bottles. It’s convenient and like natural gas, delivers fast efficient heat.
Gas is an energy source Kiwis can rely on because there’s lots of it right on our coastline.
The experts advise there’s enough to keep us going for at least eight generations!
Natural gas is one of the safest energy sources you can use around your home, especially with the new generation of safety-savvy gas appliances.
Good for you, good for New Zealand, natural gas also plays an important role in New Zealand’s energy mix. When used direct it takes pressure off our national electricity grid.
As little as a third of the energy in the gas entering a power station makes it to your home when converted to electricity. By using gas heating in your home up to 80% of the energy is utilised.
Discover the power and comfort of gas and enjoy a warmer, drier, healthier home as well as a few more coins in your pocket.
When gas is used directly, up to 80% of the energy is utilised.

1. Maximum Heat Output
This is the highest heat output. Use this figure to make sure that an appliance is big enough to heat the space required.
2. Annual Energy Consumption
This is the amount of energy an appliance would use if it were run for 2½ hours on high setting and 2½ hours on low setting for 100 days per year.
3. Star Band
This is a visual representation of the annual energy consumption and is great for a quick reference. It should be used for comparing one gas heating appliance with another. Remember it can not be used to compare appliances of other fuel types.
EECA* recommend choosing flued gas appliances that have a 4-star or greater AGA rating. These products are identified as energy efficient and they now have the ENERGY STAR® mark. This means the gas heaters and fireplaces are at least 79% efficient at converting gas to heat. To obtain the ENERGY STAR® mark a product must meet all of the stringent programme requirements to be registered with the New Zealand ENERGY STAR® programme and carry the ENERGY STAR mark. Below is a graph showing the AGA star rating of Rinnai’s appliances. All of the appliances that are 4.0 stars and above have the ENERGY STAR® mark are shown in the graph below.

Product research and design never stops at Rinnai.
Innovation should be our middle name.
Our world class Research and Development division ensures we use innovative technology that creates hard working products that are easy to use.
Beautiful and clever design means everything.
When you choose a Rinnai product we want you to be proud of it. This means we design first-rate products that incorporate the latest thinking in design and function. We understand that beauty and brains are a winning combo.
Efficiency is king.
Typically in a NZ home, approximately 29% of the total energy used by the household is on space heating*. That’s a big part of your energy bill. So, we take every opportunity to improve the efficiency of our products in the knowledge that this will reduce your running costs and hopefully shrink those awful power bills.
We think responsibly and care about our environment.
With the world’s limited resources we all have a responsibility to make the most of what we have. Rinnai delivers highly efficient products to help you use less natural resources. Every little bit helps.

How does it work?
GAS FIREPLACE & HOME HEATING COLLECTION | 35
“The Rinnai iHeat has changed our lives. Over the entire winter my 1 and 3 year old kids had no visits to the doctor
compared to the year before when we had 5 visits. The kids sleep easily, even with my son kicking off all his bedding in the
middle of the night.” – Ben Williamson
Heating SystemiHeat Central
For many New Zealanders, the thought of heating a whole house at once seems like a mystical dream. It’s doesn’t have to be. The Rinnai iHeat is a ducted central heating system that circulates warm air within your home. It ingeniously uses the Rinnai INFINITY ® continuous flow unit, which many people currently use to heat their water. Rinnai’s iHeat provides fast central heating and endless hot water. Two things that make life just a little bit better - or even a lot better.

As these are unflued appliances, they are only suitable for exterior application.
The heater discharges products of combustion from the top of the unit. If ceiling clearance is not maintained this could potentially be a fire hazard and surfaces may discolour.
The appliance heats via infra-red rays which discharge heat energy upon striking a surface they do not pass through solid materials. When installing the heater obstructions to the path of the rays must be taken into account

Technical information
Building a fireplace for your Rinnai fire can be straightforward with integrated or stand alone Zero Clearance Boxes. These fireproof units isolate combustible materials from the fire. This means you can create an inexpensive fireplace almost anywhere by creating a mock fireplace and lined chimney against an existing internal wall.
All Rinnai gas fireplaces require a flue. The type of flue can dictate where a gas fireplace can be installed. Rinnai have a number of flue options, these are explained below.

Technical information
Natural draft Power flue Direct ventOften referred to as a standard flue system. This type of flue draws the air to be combusted from the room itself and then expels it to the outside via a vertical flue. As the air for combustion is being drawn from the room, there is a requirement for adequate ventilation. The gasfitter installing the gas fireplace has a responsibility for ensuring ventilation.
A Rinnai power flue system uses a fan to draw air from the outside for combustion and propels combusted gas back outside creating high combustion efficiency and better room air quality. Power flues are smaller in size, can have a number of bends and terminate horizontally. This means power flued appliances can be installed almost any living or working space. Rinnai appliances flued via a power flue are approved by the Sensitive Choice programme of the Asthma Foundation.
Direct vent fireplaces have a sealed combustion system. This means air for combustion is drawn from the outside through the inner flue and combusted gases are expelled outside via the outer flue. Direct vent flues can terminate either vertically or horizontally. Rinnai appliances flued via a direct vent are approved by the Sensitive Choice programme of the Asthma Foundation.
