    RESISTANCE TOVERTICAL LOAD

In use, as a result of the ra-cer's weight, the rim undergoesvertical stresses and transversal andtorsional stresses due to the forcesresulting from pedaling dynamics.

Campagnolo has paid particu-lar attention to determining the re-sistance of the vertical load sinceboth durability and comfort are di-rectly related to this parameter.

T he rim works like a Romanarch which supports itself by di-spersing its weight along the cir-cumference. However, in order tosupport loads which ouweigh itwithout being deformed. the radial

    m

tension in a rim with 32 spokesmust be greater than 65 Kg; onthe back wheel, this tension mustbe greater than 110 Kg on theright and 60 Kg on the left.

The racer's weight is appliedto the hub. by studying the bcha-vour of a spoked wh\..'l..~ fitted witha rim of a kno....'11 profile, thicknessand material, engineers have creat-ed a mathematical and physicalmodel. This model enabled the ac-tual stresses on the rim due to theweight to be precisely determined.

The weight applied to thehub is essentially balanced bymeans of 5 spokes (Fig. 0, whose

    01L-- - - -----'

tension is reduced because of thecompression. The rest of the sys-tem does not undergo importantalterations. O n the basis of theseconsiderations, Campagnolo hasworked out profiles and materialsfor its whole range of rims thatsolve both problems: resistance tovertical loads, and comfort for theracer.

The best level of rigidity ofthe various rims, as a function oftheir use, has been determined bymeans of theoretical results androad-test Such rigidity ensures thereliability of the rim, even in caseof bumps and rough roads, wi-thout reducing its elasticity andcomfort (Figs. 2 and 3) .

Campagnolo SIGMA rimshave been created by the expert-ence achieved throUghJeafS ofraces on every road an track inthe world, and meet all competi-tive requirements.

The material util ized, Ergal,an aluminium zinc alloy used inaeronautics, has a very high elasticlimit (54 Kg/rum") and a remak-able breaking load (62 Kglmm') .

In project design, the highestconsideration was given to the rigi-dity/elasticiry combination in orderto ensure the trueness of the rimand its ability to withstand defor-mation under stress, including ab-sorption of impacts.

Thanks to the technology andchoice of the material, Campag-nolo SIGMA rims can easily betrued, this saves mechanics hoursof wheel. adjustment after- a race

Patented eyelets, positionedaccording to the camber and thecrossing. are safer with regards tothe duration of spokes, remarkablyreducing the possibilities of break-age in the most critical zones.

The aluminium-magnesiumalloy used for the D elta rims hasan elastic module and a breakageload level which ensure both ma-ximum reliability and easy center-mg.

The Delta rim project has gi-ven great importance to wear resis-tance. T wo thicknesses of 13/ 10mm were chosen and the galvanictreatment of the aluminium usedleaves the surface of the rim prac-tically unaltered by time and use.

These characteristics makeD elta rims particularly suited fortriathlons, In fact, in triathlons theenvironmental factors which comeinto contact with the bicycle areparticularly corrosive and unusualfor cycling, The D elta rims areunaffected by the condition of theseawater which an athlete carrieswith him after the swimmingevent.
