High curbs and excessive debris are presenting problems for Rimbey residents who rely on wheel-chairs or scooters as their mode of transportation.

Rimbey resident Jan Boyarzin spoke to coun-cil at its Wed., Oct. 15 meeting regarding the lack of access in town for disabled persons.

She said several curbs in town are too high for wheelchairs, walkers and scooters to gain access to and debris in some areas makes it difficult to get traction.

Areas which are of the most concern, Boyarzin said, are the curb on 50th Ave. directly south of the long-term care entrance and the northwest curb on 45th Ave. and 51st Street.

“The alleyway north of Legacy Ford and south of the Parkland Motel is completely gravel and we have been stuck several times after going on the walking path,” she told council.

“Given the significant number of seniors who reside in Rimbey, can town council look at some of these poor curbs and see what can be done to make Rimbey safer for those with mobility is-sues?” she asked.

On a more positive note, Boyarzin pointed out residents are lucky to have a great walking trail in Rimbey.

“It is nice to get out and enjoy a bit of na-ture, and we appreciate that the path of the trail continues over to the community centre, past the courthouse, and up to the Rimbey Hospital. The spacious width plus the fact it is paved, make it a pleasant outing for people of all ages.”

After the meeting, Rimbey CAO Lucien Cloutier said he will talk to Alberta Transportation to determine which areas of concern are in their jurisdiction. The remaining areas, which are in the town’s jurisdiction, will be reviewed and appropri-ate action taken, he said.

Teen charged: On October 16, at approximately 8:45 a.m., police, EMS and fire department personnel responded to a serious collision north of Rimbey on Highway 20. A local 17-year-old youth from Bluffton attempted to pass a semi trailer truck going in the same direction in thick fog and side swiped an oncoming car going in the opposite direction causing the car to hit the ditch.  Fortunately, none of the six people involved in the crash were seriously injured. The young person has been charged for failing to pass safely. APN Photo

RCMP make drug chargesRimbey RCMP continue to work

diligently towards reducing illegal drugs in our community.  This past week, two more drug busts were made where hard drugs and weapons were seized.  On Oc-tober 9th, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Rimbey Mounties intercepted  more methamphetamine and cocaine mak-ing its way into the community.  Police stopped a 2003 jacked up red Dodge Ram pickup truck on Highway 20 and arrested the 27-year-old male driver, a resident of Rimbey, for possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking.  The accused just recently plead guilty to possession of illegal narcotics on the last court date in Rimbey.  The man, who is very well known to police, also has fur-ther charges pending for having an illegal firearm in his possession stemming from another incident earlier in the week.

Drug dealers chargedOn October 12th, police stopped

a grey 2007 Chevrolet Impala in town limits and seized  cocaine, methamphet-amine, ecstasy and marihuana.  Items seized also included a machete knife and several other hunting type knives, cell phones and a weight scale.  A  22-year old-male and an 18-year-old male,  resi-dents of Rimbey and the Leedale area, were arrested and charged with pos-session of narcotics for the purpose of traffick-ing.    Both  men are also very well known to police.  Rimbey officers have seized and charged  three different groups of in-dividuals in the last two weeks for possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of traffick-ing.    Methamphetamine addicts were also charged for having the hard drugs in their possession when they were nabbed by Rimbey cops driving through town.  The mes-sage  should be crystal

clear.... if you are a drug dealer...you will be arrested in Rimbey and go to jail.  Mounties  will continue to target illegal drugs in our community and all those who choose to sell or use them.

Curfew checks ongoingPolice continue to monitor those in-

dividuals in the detachment area who are on probation or parole and are required to follow conditions set upon them by the courts.  Police have been conducting curfew and other checks to ensure those individuals are abiding by the rules.  Another person was arrested this week for not abiding by his conditions and was charged accordingly.

Break and enters investigatedOfficers are currently investigating

a rash of break and enters that occurred in the last few weeks in the Gull Lake north area.  Thieves targeted garages and sheds where they stole beer, tools and other items.  In some cases, the thieves committed vandalism by slashing tires and cutting trees with axes which they had stolen.  Police continue to investigate these matters.

As fate would have it we decided, this Thanksgiving, to turn our wheels eastward towards the land of the living skies, or at least that’s what kind of land it is according to their license plates.

Saskatchewan! Here we come!It was to be a redneck,

country Thanksgiving with a shooting competition using real guns complete with very loud bangs, cra-zy quad rides through the forest, a very competitive horseshoe tournament, and canoe rides on the slough. And, to top it all off the chance to consume lots of food and drink, and maybe even make some music.

We started out late, of course, because in my world at least, that’s where we usually start out.

I knew that we had probably hit the Saskatchewan border when the wide expanse of nothingness seemed to get even wider. By this time the sun had disappeared somewhere in Alberta and the road and the sky and all points in-between looked blurred and kind of grey and not at all pretty.

That was when we saw him, standing dead centre in the middle of the road, almost the same colour as the night.

“Deer!” I shrieked to my husband, who was behind the wheel, not meaning “dear” as an endearment, but ‘deer’ as in “animal, big, middle of the road.

“Watch out!”But it was too late. It truly was a deer in the headlights scenario and we

hit the poor creature head on with a terrific bang that

Unexpected

interruption,

happy ending

to sad story

crumpled up the hood of our humble little truck and did a lot of internal damage that we still don’t like to talk about.

The deer died instantly, a blessing, no doubt, for both us and the animal.

Hitting the deer changed everything about the trip. For one thing, in less than a heartbeat we became

much less bored with the tedious journey and a whole lot more agitated, sort of like coke inside a can that has just accidentally been dropped.

We both uttered a lot of unprintable words and watched helplessly as the steam poured out of our crum-pled hood.

That was when the first acts of kindness happened, which incidentally, just kept spilling out from likely and unlikely sources, until we were safely deposited on our own front step some days later.

Two young men, wearing traditional baseball caps and driving a pickup truck (also traditional), actually turned their truck around, no doubt, stopped in their tracks by the sight of our steaming truck with the crumpled hood stalled in the middle of the highway.

“You guys all right?” they inquired, peering in the driver’s door.

I shouldn’t have giggled at that moment, but I must have been a bit giddy, plus it seemed like a really silly question.

They helped us limp back to the nearest town which consisted mostly of a tavern, and other small town stuff like a few houses and lots of parked pick up trucks in front of the tavern.

The people, of which there were many, passing by our truck to get into the tavern, looked at our truck with some-thing akin to pity before shaking their heads and uttering one word.

Deer!Yup, we replied, all gloomy and sad and a bit confused

as to how our journey, so abruptly interrupted, would end.It ended, of course thanks to friends and family and

all the good things that we reverently repeated later at the lovely Thanksgiving table.

“I’m glad for the kindness of family and friends, I’m glad only our truck was hurt, not us, I’m glad I’m here to tell this story.”

And in the end I was glad I won the horseshoe tourna-ment, which is, of course, a whole other story.

Reasons why Alberta doesn’t need more oil sands pipelinesThere was an interesting article in the Calgary Herald

the other day:“Surging sales belie mythical oil access story.”In it, the reporter quoted Greg Stringham, vice-presi-

dent of oil sands and markets at the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, the holy of holies. “When you hear about market access it’s not today’s market. We’re hitting record numbers ... we’re still moving every barrel of oil we need to.”

It seems that, at present, Canada pumps more than 3.9 million barrels of oil a day.

Which raises an interesting question: Hasn’t String-ham made a very strong argument to freeze production at the present level? Maybe the pipeline emperors aren’t wearing any clothes. We don’t have an access-to-market problem after all, even if we may have one in the indefinite future. (I’ll deal with the future at the end of this column.)

The bottom line is that Albertans needn’t accept the simplistic “gotta build more pipelines” narrative spun by the oil patch and its government acolytes.

For the solution to this possible access-to-market is-sue is so simple — freeze production — that I’m almost embarrassed to point it out.

Why do we treat as holy writ the idea that oil sands’ production must double or triple as if this were inevitable? Don’t human beings have any control over this?

Apparently not — at least not when our new Premier and his same old gang have bought what the oil patch is selling.

What about the public interest? What would a freeze accomplish? Let us count the ways:

1. We could avoid the increasingly volatile dispute

between government and industry on the one hand and native people and environmentalists on the other. Social peace might thereupon break out and billions of dollars could be saved by cancelling proposed pipelines.

2. A freeze would also help Alberta’s international image, because greenhouse gas emissions from the oil sands should decrease, given the promise of Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) and other researchers to decrease per-barrel energy intensity.

3. Such a decision would partially address the heavy cumulative environmental and social impacts of the oil sands, as well as buying time to reclaim the immense tail-ings ponds from surface mining operations.

In turn, the risk of a Mt. Polley-size breach of im-poundment dams would decrease.

4. It would also reduce the work load of the Alberta Energy Regulator, allowing it to devote more resources to enforcing existing environmental regulations and, where necessary, creating better ones.

5. There would be less inflation of wage and material costs as construction mania eases.

6. Less controversy would exist about labour short-ages and temporary foreign workers.

7. Given the present slump in oil prices and the post-ponement of various new expansion projects, it may seem strange to talk about inflation pressures, but past experi-ence has shown Albertans the risks of the inevitable boom and bust cycle when we passively allow market pressures

to make decisions for us. In the long run, we can expect

the present glut of oil to disappear and the price to rise

again.

But in the meantime, ramping up to sell more into a

weak market certainly doesn’t help.

Admittedly, big investment decisions have to take

long-term trends into account. But if that is so, when the

International Energy Agency says we’ll have to leave two-

thirds of our reserves in the ground to avoid climatic ca-

tastrophe, planning greater production fails this test. In 20

years, “stranded carbon” may make some of our oil patch

movers and shakers look pretty shortsighted.

One final thought. I agree with those who point out

the risk in having only one customer — the United States

— for our oil, whether light or heavy. But we can deal

with this in two ways:

First, by using existing pipe to transport the products

east, then transhipping them to Europe.

Second, by using existing pipe to get the stuff to

various American tidewater ports. If the products are not

merged with American oil, re-export from the U. S. is per-

missible. Indeed, Enbridge is already planning this move.

So. No new pipelines, Premier Prentice. And may I

respectfully ask for greater sophistication when your gov-

ernment develops and debates public policy.

Denise Garnick and her daughter Kel-cie are a rare mother daughter team whose passion for physical fitness has lead them to successfully compete at body building competitions.

The Garnicks competed at the Muscle Beach Fall Classic Body Building Com-petition held at the Winspear Centre in Edmonton Oct. 11. Both ladies brought home medals.

Garnick captured third place in the

Mother/daughter team win at body building competitionWomen’s Masters and also took third in the Women’s Heavyweight Category for over age 35.

Her 16-year-old daughter took second in the Wom-en’s Fitness Category.

After the competition the two went off and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast of pancakes, a treat they don’t often allow themselves.

Garnick, who owns her own gym, Outa’ The Box Fit-ness, which is set up in her basement and is a personal trainer is well experienced at working out, eating healthy and helping others to do the same.

But, for the mother of four, the satisfaction of being

in top-notch physical condition is somewhat amplified by watching her daughter follow in her footsteps.

The ladies have been training together for the several months. Both are early risers, hitting the treadmill or the stepper in the gym at 5 a.m.

“If you really want it, you can do anything,” said Gar-nick.

As well as working out with her mom, Kelcie is a competitive cheerleader at Premier Academy in Red Deer.

“My mom sets a positive example,” she said. “It’s so cool. No 16-year-old on the face of this earth is prouder of their mom than I am.”

Working out and competing is a natural high for Kel-cie.

“I love the performing aspect of it,” she said. For Garnick, the admiration is mutual and she is

pleased her daughter has made the positive choice to stay in shape and eat healthy meals. She is also proud that her daughter was almost a decade younger than the other competitors in that category and still managed to pull of

a second-place win.She notes that some teens have not made such posi-

tive choices resulting in dire consequences.“Obesity is rampant,” she said. “And it’s not just kids,

it’s parents, too.”Being active with your children is important, she

stressed.“It can be as simple as going for walks and bike rides

with your kids. You send them a better message when you get off the couch and go play with them, rather than just tell them to get active themselves.”

Illegal hunting leads

Police received several calls this week involving illegal hunt-ing in the detachment area.  Rimbey RCMP charged one man for having a loaded fire-arm in his vehicle.  The would-be hunter was about to shoot at an animal right on the Range Road!  In other cases, police are following up on leads where persons were shooting off Leedale Road near Range Road 41 just before dark.    Rimbey RCMP  and Alberta Fish and Wildlife Of-ficers have joined forces in the area and are targeting those involved in illegal night hunting.  Po-lice are still trying to identify those re-sponsible for  shoot-ing two beautiful bull moose on a lease site near Highway 766 and Range Road 34 (Leedale area) in No-vember 2012.  In that case,  poachers had shot the two moose and only cut off their antlers leaving all the meat to spoil.  If you have any information about this or any other crime against nature, please call  Report a Poacher at 1-800-642-3800.  This is just like Crime Stoppers and you may be eligible for a reward for infor-mation leading to an arrest.

Anyone who wants to meet a peace of-ficer in Rimbey just needs to try speeding through a school zone, cruising through a stop sign, or committing a driving while dis-tracted sin such as chatting on a cell phone or texting.

Suddenly they will find themselves up close and personal with peace officer Kyle Koller, or one of his very capable counter-parts, peace officers Derek Lewko or Jay Klause. Anyone of the three individuals are armed with the necessary tools needed to make the violation a bad and expensive choice.

It is unfortunate for speeders or those unfortunate individuals who chose to violate the bylaws of Rimbey or the summer villages that the sergeant and manager of protective services is so dedicated to his job.

With such a dedicated peace officer it is almost impossible to get away with even a minor infraction of the law.

“I love what I do,” said Koller, who ad-mits he sometimes cruises into town on his day off just to check on things. And he is quite

happy to sit beside Hwy. 53 at 4 a.m. to keep an eye on early morning motorists who are, unfortunately, in too much of a hurry to obey the 50-kilometer speed limit posted signs.

Koller began his job as peace officer in Rimbey and the Summer Villages of Parkland Beach, Gull Lake, Sunbreaker Cove, Birch-cliff, Jarvis Bay and Norglenwold Jan. 2.

His years with the Calgary Police Service as a constable working in traffic enforcement have given him a solid background in dealing with traffic infractions, so he stepped into the position easily.

While working for the Calgary Police Service, Koller gained full custody of his five-year-old son, Tristen. Being a Calgary cop did not give Koller much time to devote to his son, so he decided to change career paths.

He became a partner in the business, Assured Document Services, and remained in that business until 2007 when he met his future wife, Pam who was working for a law firm that happened to be one of Koller’s cli-ents.

The couple decided to pull up stakes and move to Sylvan Lake, which is a smaller cen-

tre to raise their family and Koller went to work as sheriff at Red Deer Court

House.Koller, his wife Pam and their children

15-year-old Tristen, Austin, six and Brook-lynn four, are still living in Sylvan Lake.

As a peace officer, Koller is responsible for enforcing bylaws, and traffic rules and regulations.

He is equipped with radar and laser equipment, an audio and video camera sys-tem and a laptop.

He works flexible hours, striving to be at the right place at the right time to catch traffic offenders.

Since coming on board at the Rimbey town office he has worked with consultant Donna Tona to overhaul the peace officer’s manual making it more comprehensive and readable.

Making changes for the better is part of what makes Koller’s job challenging and ex-citing, he said.

“It’s ground floor, we are working on the policies and procedures and I really see a bright future for the peace officers here.”

He has found the people he deals with to be cooperative and friendly.

“Overall, they seem happy with the pres-ence of a peace officer,” he said.

COMMUNITY The Rimbey Review, Oct. 21, 2014 9

By Treena Mielke

A Rimbey resident concerned about changes to plans for a proposed seniors’ lodge to be constructed in town asked council to explain the reasoning behind the new numbers.

Jan Boyarzin, who attended Wednes-day’s council meeting, said it was reported in the Rimbey Review in May that the proposed lodge was to cost $13.3 million, but in last week’s Review that price had changed to $15.5 million.

In an interview Thursday, Rimoka board chairman Paul McLauchlin said cost related numbers are approximate and

the size has changed in accordance with additional dollars to be borrowed for the project.

“Forty is what we had applied for, but with the addition of a loan, we can build 80 rooms.”

McLauchlin said the majority of the rooms will be one-bedroom.

“There is a room size requirement that is attached to the assisted living grant. There are modern, safe requirements. It will be quite impressive when it is done.”

“There has been no more land ear-marked,” said Boyarzin, adding she was concerned about the size of the facility

increasing, but no mention of more land being purchased.

But Mayor Rick Pankiw said there is more than enough land to accommodate the proposed lodge.

“The county purchased 8.54 acres from SJC Corp which is being transferred to Rimoka Foundation, which is a lot of room for an 80 room lodge, even allowing room for expansion.”

A request for proposal for the architec-tural design will be out by the end of the month, said McLauchlin, adding Rimoka Foundation is working with Alberta Hous-ing on the project.

“There is a process to follow,” he noted.

Pankiw suggested Boyarzin request being added to the agenda as a delegate at the next Rimoka Housing Foun-dation board meeting which is to be Nov. 26 at Ponoka County office at 9 a.m.

Dear Editor,On Friday, Sept. 26

I went to a chicken sup-per at Winfield Seniors Home.

What a disappoint-ment.

I never knew such a small potato scoop was invented. Also there was only a wee bit of salad and a small piece of chicken and bun.

What there was tasted good, but that’s all it was – a taste. I went home and made a ham sandwich.

Also, I can’t under-stand why the gas price is so high when the dollar is below ninety cents and a barrel of oil is below ninety dollars a barrel. They are try-ing to say it is because of the demand, but I have to wonder if it is a demand for oil or the dollar.

Town council has been brought to task for taking an issue in-camera which a Rimbey resident said should have been public.

Gayle Rondeel, who attended Wednesday’s council meeting questioned council as to why they went in-cam-era at a previous meeting regarding town owned land.

CAO Lucien Cloutier confirmed the land in ques-tion is owned by the town.

“It’s industrial land in the northeast corner of the municipality near the recycling centre. There is a party that has expressed an interest in it, at this point, there’s an active negotiation going on. At this particular point we cannot disclose the nature of the potential develop-er,” he said. “The party that we’re having discussions with has as explicitly requested negotiations proceed in confidence.”

Land, labor and legal matters need to be discussed in-camera according to the municipal government act, he said.

The possibility of selling the lights at the Rim-bey Airport to Lacombe Flying Club was discussed by council at its Wednesday night meeting, though no final decision was made.

Mayor Rick Pankiw said he had received a re-quest from the president of the Lacombe Flying Club, Ellery Derksen to obtain the lighting system in ex-change for an approximately $1,000 donation for the proposed skateboard park.

Pankiw said the request came in Wednesday af-ternoon and there wasn’t time to investigate it further before council.

He added the lights were installed in the early ‘80s and some work was done on the system in 2006. However, he said public works foreman Rick Schmidt said it is not feasible to repair the non functioning lights.

“As far as I’m concerned, we should go for it,” said Coun. Mathew Jaycox, referring to the possible exchange of the lights for a donation.

CAO Lucien Cloutier said he believes the La-combe Flying Club has the same lighting system.

“It’s not feasible for us to fix them, but it is my understanding that the Lacombe Flying Club may be able to make use of them because they have the same or a similar system.”

Cloutier plans to check the matter out.“I plan to look into it administratively. We need to

go about this the right way. They (the lights), may not even fall under the category of an asset.”

Cloutier thinks the trade off could be positive for Rimbey.

“We are not making use of the lights and don’t intent to make use of them. If it results in the commu-nity getting this grant, (for a skateboard park) and it is a contribution to a local project, it’s really a win/win.”

12 The Rimbey Review, Oct. 21, 2014 SPORTS

By June Norvila

The Bentley Curling Club is looking forward to a busy, exciting, fun-packed year as they wel-come many players and teams from Sylvan Lake.  Sylvan has no curling rink this year so some curl-ers are choosing to curl in Bentley. They are a wel-come boost to the general Bentley club member-ship and the morale of the club.

Almost 30 people attended the club’s fall general meeting on October 8.  Vice-president Krista Turner chaired the meet-ing in the absence of the club president Kyle Brink.  Some of the executive were still busy with harvesting.

“Good ice is our priority this year,” Turner said many times after welcoming everyone to the meeting and introducing the executive that were present: secretary Bonnie Muzylouski and direc-tors Art Dykstra, Ralph Scarlett and Dawn Reid, as well as Bruce Millar who also couldn’t make the meeting.

Regular league curling is scheduled to start October 27.  Bonspiel dates have been set; the first bonspiel being the Farmer’s slated for November 24-29.

A new fee structure was put in place at the 2014 spring meeting.  There is now a base fee of $130 for all members and an additional fee for

each league played in.  These fees do not per-tain to junior curlers who are charged a flat $50 fee.

Lockers are available to rent for $20 each.It was decided that with the increase in mem-

bership and teams a lounge attendant must be hired, and tenders are also out for a full time ice technician / lobby caretaker.  A number of possi-bilities were mentioned.

There were two vacancies on the executive af-ter the resignation of Gerald Peterson and Jenna

French so nominations were called for.  Bruce Cartwright, Sylvan Lake curling club vice-president, was added to the Bentley executive leaving one vacancy.

With plans to include a new five-sheet Sylvan Lake curling rink in the construction of a new

leisure centre following the collapse of Sylvan Lake’s old arena, it could be two or more years before curling is back in Sylvan indicated Cart-wright.

Volunteers would be appreciated to help install the ice.

The arena concession has showed an interest in being open while curling is on if it is utilized enough.

During their 2015 town budget deliberations Bentley town council will consider a request from the curling club to replace the deteriorated wood-en overhead door on the south side of the curling rink with an insulated steel door.

Roof repairs by the town were being done to the curling rink roof at the same time as the arena roof was being done and will hopefully stop any leaks.

For more informa-tion about the Bentley Curling Club call the club and leave a mes-sage at 403-748-4303 or contact one of the executive.

Triana Hohn, 14, will be at Chapters this Saturday to sign her debut novel, Tracked. The Rimbey teen began writing the book, which is now on consignment at Chapters, when she was eleven-years-old as part of a school assignment. Photo submitted

By Treena Mielke

When Triana Hohn was given the assignment to write a short story along with the rest of her Grade 6 Language Arts class, she went home and began writing.

And writing, and writing and writing! And, somehow with all the writing combined with the vivid imagination

of the 11-year-old girl and her natural literary talent, what started out as a short story blossomed into the full sized fantasy adventure novel, Tracked.

Triana’s mom, Darla was going to make a copy of the story for her daugh-ter to have as a keepsake, but somehow one single book turned into several as more and more people wanted copies and the book caught on like wildfire.

The self-published book is now available on the shelves at Chapters in Red Deer on a six-month consignment trial and the author, herself will be at the store this Saturday, Oct. 25 from noon to 4 p.m. for a book signing.

Hohn, now 14 years-old and in Grade 9 at Rimbey Junior/Senior High School loves to write and is quite happy in her room with the door closed, spending hours creating and re-creating the characters and plot which help weave a tale of mystery and intrigue.

She does, however, still find time to participate in sports and enjoys bas-ketball, soccer, badminton and riding horses. She also loves to read, and is an avid fan of the Harry Potter series.

‘Tracked’ is a fantasy adventure novel that fol-lows the story of two teens, both orphaned, who have been forced on the run from a magician who rules over their land like a tyrant.

The teens meet in unlikely circumstances and embark on a daring journey where they are forced to deal with monsters, magic, and enemies of all sorts.

As well as at Chapters ‘Tracked’ can be pur-chased on line through Lulu Publishing. It is also available at the elementary school’s library.

Halloween – a time to dress up in costume and stock up on candy. No wonder kids love this time of year! Halloween can be frustrating for parents who don’t want to send mixed messages by letting their children go candy crazy.

Here are some ideas to lessen the impact of candy on your children’s oral health:

Control the amount of candy:Set limits ahead of time by sitting down with

your child and talking about what is a reasonable amount of candy to collect.

Sort candy and remove items your child does not like or may not be safe.

Limit the number of times your child eats can-dy. The more times a day they eat it, the greater the risk of tooth decay.

Avoid bringing candy to school.Have candy after meals instead of as a snack,

the extra saliva produced at mealtimes helps pro-vide some protection to teeth.

Use Halloween candy for craft projects. Offer alternatives to candy:Hand out stickers, temporary tattoos, bubbles

or Halloween themed pencils.End the Halloween season:Set a date when it’s no longer Halloween at

your house so you can return to normal, healthy eating and snacking routines.

Brush and floss with extra care and atten-tion:

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

Author Talya Morgana Stein gives a voice to Crohn’s disease patients and challenges them to love themselves in her reflective new collection of poetry and prose, “The Truth: An Autobiography in Poetry and Prose” (published by iUniverse).

Stein captures the daily challenges of living with Crohn’s disease through evocative poems and es-says. She proudly displays her emotions on the page as she details the painful struggles of dealing with her disease as well as the joy she feels in writing.

Stein’s writings echo themes of self-love and self-acceptance. Throughout the text, she contem-plates the meaning of truth in her life and seeks to find a greater understanding of herself. She hopes her book will inspire the same reflection in her read-ers.

“This book is different from other books because it is down-to-the-bone real,” Stein writes. “It is in-termixed with prose and poetry which makes for an authentic reading experience.”

Suicide! The elephant in the room no

one wants to talk about. No one wants to talk about the

pain, the anguish, and the ques-tions that are left spinning around in an empty void that was once filled with a loved one who could no longer live with the sounds of silence.

No one dares! But silence is not the answer,

and somehow, some way these sounds of silence need to be lifted.

And people have to start talk-ing. It is, after all, the only way to start healing. It is, in fact, the only way to find a light at the end of a deep, dark tunnel which seem-ingly has no end.

Last Thursday, at the Beatty House in Rimbey, in the space of a few, short hours the sounds of silence were replaced with plenty of honest, open sharing, brought on at least in part, by the amazing pictures and quotes on display at the Man-Up Against Suicide pho-tography exhibit.

The people who attended the exhibit kept pouring into the Be-atty House until every nook and cranny was filled and all available floor space taken up.

Before long it was standing room only.

Emma Palm from Rimbey

and Cayley Thomas Haug from Edmonton, united by the loss of both of their brothers to suicide, co-hosted the Movember-funded exhibit with University of British Columbia researchers.

Led by Dr. John Olifee and Dr. John Ogrdniczuk, also a Rimbey native, the Man-Up Against Sui-cide project interviewed over 40 men and women who were affect-ed by men’s suicide. Their experi-ences were captured and narrated through photographs.

The pictures, lined up on walls at the Beatty House were poignant reminders of lives lost, of words not spoken, of dispair and sadness and wounds that somehow, tragi-cally, were never healed.

Rod and Mary Palm, who lost their 17-year-old son to suicide in 2012, were among the crowd at the Beatty House. The amiable couple threaded their way through the crowd, being stopped constantly by friends and relatives who want-ed to chat and supply hugs.

The couple agreed the exhibit was an excellent way to get peo-ple to open up about suicide and depression. They noted that many families are tragically affected by the aftermath left when a loved one decides to take their own life.

“I thought it was excellent. It’s breaking the silence. It’s definite-ly more of a stigma with males,”

Man-Up Against Suicide photography exhibit comes to Rimbeysaid Mary Palm, noting her own son hid his depression until it was too late.

She said males have a tendency to stifle

their feelings and if they are depressed they often don’t ask for help.

16 The Rimbey Review, Oct. 21, 2014 COMMUNITY

Man-Up Against Suicide photography exhibit in RimbeyContinued from page 15

In a short speech, Emma Palm thanked everyone for coming and en-

couraged them to share their feelings.“There never is a black and white

answer. The only thing everyone agrees

on is that talking seems to be the most important. So let’s talk. This is where the people we love live. This is where the

people we lost live.”Dr. Ogrodniczuk, who spoke briefly at the ex-

hibit, said he was pleasantly surprised to see such a good turnout at the exhibit.

“I think it is fantastic to see this exhibit hap-pen. It shows a willingness, courageousness and initiative to do something about the problem. It helps give people a voice. Talking may circum-vent the suicide in the first place, silence only per-petuates the problem.”

The doctor said keeping silent about the prob-lem is not a solution.

“When I was growing up in Rimbey the father of one of my friends committed suicide. I don’t remember much about it, but I do remember the silence. It can’t be a silent topic,” he stressed. “It has to be shared by the community.”

Nineteen-year-old Joel Deal and eighteen-year-old Sheldon Brassard were among the young people who dropped in to check out the exhibit.

“It’s a great idea,” said Deal.“People need to speak up more, get help,”

agreed Brassard. Risk for suicide among men in rural areas in-

creases by 40 per cent or more the further away one gets from urban centres. Men are four to five times more likely to die by suicide than women in rural areas in Canada.

The exhibition at the Beatty House will stay open to the public from October 17 to 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Emma Palm stands by one of her photos which is a reflection of objects belonging to her brother Eli, who committed suicide in 2012. The photo also is meant to show the holes he left behind.

Dr. John Ogrodniczuk, a professor of psychiatry at the University of British Columbia browses through the exhibits at the Beatty House, Oct. 16.

Kerri Stephens and Brent Warren from Last Ditch on the Left will perform at the Beatty House, Oct. 21. Photo submitted

This is a reminder that the next Home Routes house concert is this coming Tuesday, October 21 at 7:30 pm, at the Beatty House.

Tickets can be purchased at Stationery Sto-ries and Sounds, Main Street, Rimbey.  You can also order tickets through Teri at 403.843.6497 or Bron at 403.843.2547.

There is a limit of 40 tickets, but if there are some still available, we will sell tickets at the door until performance time.  A cash bar will be available as well.

We will update our website and Facebook pages, plus send out an alert email, if there are unexpected last minute changes.

The Winnipeg folk roots duo “Last Ditch on the Left” will be performing, “bringing a chem-istry to their music and live performance that is impossible to deny. This allure, along with their haunting harmonies and their songs that focus on love, love lost, tragedy, and social issues, has been the enduring force in this year of change, challenge, and consummation.”

It was a big year for Kerri and Brent as they toured Germany and Switzerland and travelled Canada as part of the Via Rail ‘Artist on Board’ program.  Their debut album is to be officially released in November, but we can expect many of their original songs to be played at the Beatty House pre-release.

Here’s some reviews:‘Gentle rhythms and tender melodies bind the

mysterious sounds of Kerri Stephens and Brent Warren. Take a listen...’ ~ CBC Music

‘Bittersweet roots duo Last Ditch On The Left have playful sass and grit that they balance per-fectly with soft vulnerability and emotion. They

took their sweet time and waited for the right pitch to knock their debut record out of the park . You will be caught up by the sounds they make for the first few spins, then the rich lyrics are go-ing to take up full-time residence in your ears and you’ll be hooked.’ ~ Matt Epp

‘Kerri Stephens’ deep, soulful vocals are per-fectly supported by the knowing and masterful guitar work of Brent Warren. Heartfelt stories and intelligent lyrics combine with beautiful mel-odies and spare arrangements, creating a unique listening experience. I know they will continue to make an important contribution to the future of Canada’s music scene.’ ~ Linda McRae

“Loving this record. Somehow Kerri Ste-phens’ plaintive “sweet,” next to Brent Warren’s course “salty”, really works for me. The Rick Rubin-esque production is perfect for the “prai-riecana” tunes.  I’ve been following Kerri for a number of years... and this disc feels like home.” ~ Steve Bell

If you are wondering about their style and in-fluences, they include Patty Griffin, Tom Waits, Daniel Lanois, The Band, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Sarah Harmer and Gillian Welch.
