Breton man faces charges

A 29-year-old man from Breton found himself to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when he was stopped by Rimbey RCMP while driving down-town during the evening of Jan. 1.

A search by offi cers showed him to not only have brass knuckles in his vehicle, police also turned up substances which are believed to be crystal meth and cocaine. Three loaded fi rearms were also found.

The individual is now facing several charges and will appear in Provincial Court in Rimbey on Jan. 22.

The arrest followed a busy month for the local RCMP, said Const. Carman Dutz.

“In keeping with the Christmas season, mem-bers of the RCMP were able to tie a bow on a few fi les by making arrests and laying charges for a variety of offences,” said Dutz.

Solving crimes related to possession of stolen mail and vehicles, possession of drugs for the purpose of traffi cking, weapons of-fences and impaired driv-ing kept offi cers busy.

It was in November of last year that I at-tended a lecture, When Doctors Help Us Die: The Canadian Debate, at Burman University. The notes I made from that evening were misplaced in a binder I use for my Philosophy class. I was in RDC’s library and fumbling around on some counter space. Ironically, I found the binder with my notes on the assisted suicide lecture on top of a stack of Mental Health Resource

Thoughts on physician assisted suicide

January offers new beginnings

The swinging door from our favourite fast food place brings in a rush of cold air as my girlfriends and I sit companionably sipping coffee and doing the ‘girl talk’ thing.

We do this most Saturdays, leaving the warmth of our own kitch-ens to sit in this some-what drafty favorite cof-fee haunt, wrapping our chilled fingers around mugs of steaming hot cof-fee.

We share stuff. That’s what girls do! We talk. We huddle. We laugh. We cry. And, we do it together.

Then we go home and do laundry and get gro-ceries and wish we hadn’t watched every previous season of Downton Abby because now we have to wait until Sunday to feed our addiction.

This week we talk about January and how it can be kind of a ‘blah’ month.

January blues, I believe they called it. They sug-gested getting out more. Dancing. One girlfriend talked about a tea party she had recently hosted complete with twin sweat-er sets and pearls. It was a ‘high tea’ party like they have in England.

Forming a dinner club was suggested.

I have to admit that I added nothing of value to the conversation.

The thing is I kind of like January.

For one thing, to me, January marks new begin-nings. It is a time when you can take secret resolu-tions you have dared write on a blank sheet of paper with a sharp, new pencil fi lled with hope and opti-mism and work on making them a reality.

It is true that statistics indicate that probably by January of 2017, you will not be a better person, nor will you have lost much, if any of the weight you gained over Christmas, nor will you have quit smok-ing.

But, I beg to differ. To me, hope springs eternal and, anyway, it’s the journey not the destination that counts.

Another thing I love about January is the fact that there is no need to hustle and bustle around and get ready for some big event like Christmas.

Been there. Done that. Moved on!

While the holiday is truly a blessed time to celebrate

the age old story of the birth of the babe in a man-ger and provides a won-derful splash of colour in the stark black and white landscape of winter, it is also stressful, expensive and a lot of work.

There is nothing much like that going on in January, thank goodness.

And January nights are hot chocolate, sit in front of the fi re nights, where one can stare at the danc-ing, fl ickering fl ames and think about not very much at all.

You gotta love that.I drive home from cof-

fee, my mud spattered and very messy car appearing to be the only imperfect thing in a postcard perfect

world. Thick white hoar frost covering the trees sparkles like a million white diamonds against the hard brilliance of a clear blue sky.

It’s so achingly beautiful, it hurts my eyes. It’s not always so, I think to myself as I recall driving home through a miserable blan-ket of fog the night before.

I’ve driven in worse, but I can’t really remember when. And fi nally when I pulled into my own yard, I literally kissed the drive-way in gratitude.

Uncertain. Unpredictable. Temporary. That would be January.

And life!Full of ups and downs,

but mostly just awesome!

pamphlets.Don Carmichael and

David Goa were the two speakers that took an au-dience through a discus-sion of the “legal quan-dary that is about to test the political wisdom and moral conscience of a na-tion.” Respectively they are professors of political phi-losophy and theology from the University of Alberta. This wasn’t some rally against assisted suicide in a church basement. The lecture proceeded with ut-most regard for the secular masses.

Carmichael was fi rst to speak. He reminded the audience that Canada is comprised of many dif-ferent classes, groups, and individuals; and that all Canadians share the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It was also

pointed out by Carmichael that “religious authority is not accepted by everyone.” And neither is atheism. From Carmichael’s portion of the lecture, I derived two boiled down reasons an individual may desire access to assisted suicide: is it right for me and is it required for others.

I feel that that question has to be answered by the individual.

David Goa occupied most of the time that was con-sumed within the lecture hall. Even with his back-ground in theology, he was nice enough not to start throwing the Bible around. There were three points he brought up regarding some pending societal consequences of assisted suicide: it could act as a lever towards commercial-ization of services and pri-

vate healthcare; it could usher in capital punish-ment; and it could slowly grow the obligation to end your life. Granted, some of Goa’s arguments fall under the slippery slope category of fallacy, but I found all his points were worthy to consider.

Society likes to normal-ize things: abortion, UFC knockouts, cannabis, and assisted suicide. If soci-ety makes things normal, then individuals don’t have to feel as bad when confronted with the dif-fi cult scenarios in life. If you had an unsafe week-end, that’s okay, here is an abortion. Need something to do? Watch this human infl ict brain damage onto another human (and don’t forget to ask Vegas about the odds). Are you feel-ing anxiety and stress like

everyone else? Here is a narcotic to calm yourself down. If don’t like with-ering away in a hospital bed, here is a hypodermic needle.

David Goa said it best during the lecture at Burman: we have a habit of looking for a techni-cal solution in our soci-ety. And I agree with him. We all seek solutions to-wards the normalization of tricky/touchy subjects and to make things okay.

However, death is nor-mal. We don’t need to be splicing intravenous solutions into the arms of our dying grandpar-ents, our cancerous par-ents, our sick siblings, or our tumorous children. Physician-assisted suicide speaks loudly to what the collective conscience of Canadians is.

Fire department responds to two fi re calls, Jan. 9

The fi refi ghters from Rimbey fi re department had returned to the hall and were just putting away their equipment after several hours spent battling the blaze from one fi re, when they were called to another.

The fi res both occurred last Saturday. At around 4 p.m. the fi re department responded to a call

regarding a mobile home that was on fi re located about 12 miles northwest of Rimbey.

Fire chief John Weisgerber said the mobile home was “fully involved” by the time they arrived.

“The owners were at home, but they got out okay,” he said. The cause of the fi re which destroyed the single wide

mobile home has not yet been determined. The fi remen returned to Rimbey and were putting away

their equipment when a second call came in.This time, fi remen responded to an explosion in a garage

on the north end of town.“It was a small fi re, but it did a fair bit of damage and

blew the doors off the garage,” said Weisgerber. He said the person working in the garage at the time of

the explosion suffered some burns and was taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Const. Carman Dutz from Rimbey RCMP said the explo-sion occurred when an unidentifi ed person was working in a confi ned space without proper ventilation in a vehicle in the garage.

“There was no criminal intent,” he said.

Dear Editor,The gas stations in Rimbey should be ashamed of them-

selves. I was in Rocky Mountain House on Jan. 9. Gas was 82.9 cents a litre in that community. In Rimbey last week it was 90.9 and 91.9 cents a litre at some stations. At the Co-op it was 84.9 cents a litre.

On Sunday, Jan. 10, Bretton Esso came down to 89.9 cents a litre. A person doesn’t have to be smart to realize Rocky Mountain House is a lot further to haul gas. With the price of a barrel of oil which is about thirty one to thirty two dollars a barrel, a litre of gas should be 50 cents or less a litre.

With the Christmas sea-son come and gone and everyone getting back to life as normal we tend to fall back into our nor-mal routines. I know we have all heard it before but there is no better time than now to re-fresh the mind and talk about fraud. With the slow down in the econ-omy criminals are look-ing for ways to have easy access to money. One of the ways criminals ac-complish this is through fraud. There are many different fraud schemes circulating around. Some of the more popular ones currently are credit card fraud, cheque fraud, and telephone scams. With the new technology in credit card development fraud has become more diffi cult but thieves have adjusted their ways and have found loopholes.

How to protect yourselfWhen committing fraud

thieves look for the easi-est targets, like a predator preying on the weak in a herd. The weaker the prey the easier it becomes to be a victim of fraud.

Fraudulent thefts in community can be

reducedThieves will target any-one regardless of their age or social status, and even well educated peo-ple have been caught. In order to combat fraud one needs to be able to have strong measures in place and to be vigilant.

1. Be identity savvyBe aware of where your

credit cards and identi-fi cation is at all times. If you notice anything miss-ing report it immediately to the banks, credit card companies, and the po-lice. Companies will dis-able cards and reissue new cards at no cost to their clients. With identi-fi cation the police are able to fl ag the identifi cation.

2. Reduce cheque use.Cheque use is still a

common tool for mone-tary transactions. If pos-sible make transactions with another form of pay-ment when face-to-face. Avoid sending cheques by mail if at all possible. If you need to make a trans-action by cheque make sure you notify whoever your sending the cheque to and follow up with them to make sure it ar-rived. In many instances the issuer never followed up and never knew the cheques were compro-mised.

3. Change passwords and PINs regularly

When using debit or credit cards with chip and tap technology, the best advice I can give is to change you pin on a reg-ular basis and disable the tap feature. This prevents unauthorized purchases on the card and protects your money. When a card

does become compro-mised it prevents thieves having use of the card. When changing your pin do not use obvious com-binations for ease of re-membering, as these tend to be the fi rst combina-tions thieves will try.

4. Be wary of unusual transactions.

Be wary of unusual of-fers or requests. Generally these are too-good-to-be-true offers like “you have inherited a large sum of money but to secure the funds we require you to send a deposit fi rst. “ Never agree to conduct fi nancial transactions on behalf of strangers either.

5. Shred important doc-uments.

Shred important docu-ments that contain sen-sitive information such as bank and credit card statements, old tax re-turns, receipts, even junk mail that has your ad-dress on it before dispos-ing of them. This prevents your sensitive informa-tion from being exposed to thieving eyes.

6. Have a conversation about fraud.

Talk to family mem-bers and friends about fraud. The more aware people are about fraud the better protected they are. Another important piece to the conversation should be letting your loved ones know they can talk about any problems they encounter. We all be-come embarrassed when we have become the vic-tim of these scams and this tends to lead to fur-ther vulnerability.

7. Keep personal infor-

mation personal.Finally, Keep your per-

sonal information per-sonal. Don’t give out personal information over the phone, through email or over the Internet unless you initiated the contact and know whom you’re dealing with. Don’t include personal infor-mation like credit card details in regular, unen-crypted email or enter it on an unencrypted web-site as your information won’t be secure.

8. Know where your documents are.

Keep important docu-ments that are rarely used such as Social Insurance Numbers, passports, and birth certifi cates locked up in a secure location. Identifi cation that is used more often should not be left in vehicles when they are unoccupied. This makes easy targets for thieves.

If you have discovered you have become the vic-tim of fraud the best thing you can do is report it. We may not be able to recover the loss but we can warn others and allows us to keep tabs on the scams that are circulating. Like a herd that sticks together we can be stronger to-gether as a community in the prevention of fraud. For more information come have a chat at the Rimbey detachment or go online, there are lots of websites with informa-tion about how to protect yourself and your loved ones from fraud,

Together we can reduce fraudulent thefts in our communities.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 19, 2016 RIMBEY REVIEW 7

Gladys Calkins will be celebrating her 99th birthday on January 20th. Gladys, formerly of Bentley, who presently resides at Rimbey Long Term Care is seen here with, two of her daughters; Donna Curtis and Gail Wilson.

Happ y 99th Birthday Gladys CalkinsPeewees hard working team

The A & W Renegades Peewee B team is off to a great start in league play; boasting a 7-2 record. The team is the self-proclaimed hardest working team in the league, and although the roster only consists of 9 skaters and a goalie, the group is very diffi cult to play against. Strong defensive play by the forwards and the defence plus great goaltending have been they keys to the team’s success. The players are 11 to 12 years old and the team’s focus has been on skill devel-

opment and learning to play hard which is required as they continue to learn the game. Shawn Batke, Connor Brace, Rhett Bramfi eld, Kyden Busat, Thomas Clark, Aidan Doll, Garrett Groves, McCoy Groves, Sam Jensen, and Nilah Ledieu make up the A & W Renegades team.

The team’s success has not been limited to league play as they recently reached the A fi nal of the Bowden tournament in early December.

A special thanks to the Atom A team who has provided players when available, to round out the two lines of the team in our recent home games.

Springdale Players to perform ‘Attack of the Lake People’

Springdale Players are gearing up to delight audiences with another season of great dinner theatre entertainment.

‘Attack of the Lake People’ is the play of choice this year and stage manager Connie Jensen said the story line promises to keep the au-dience in stitches.

“It is just funny,” she said. “The best humour comes from a misunder-standing, a mistake that grows.”

Well known Springdale Players Carol Kreutz, Ernie Closs, Christian Lohmann and Elaine Hawkins are returning this year.

New to the cast this year is Roger Giesbrecht, who has watched his daughter, Journey per-form on stage as one of the Springdale Players for a few years. This year both father and daughter are part of the cast.

Cal Kitchen is also new to the cast.

The play is directed by Trish Matthews.

Performances, held at Liberty Hall, begin on Feb. 6 and a mati-nee will be held Feb. 7. Performances will con-

tinue every Friday and Saturday throughout February.

Tickets are available at Stationery, Stories and Sounds in Rimbey.

The Springdale Players work closely with Liberty Hall Board and the Springdale Ladies Club who provide the deli-cious meal which pre-

cedes the performances. She said the cast is ded-

icated and committed to continually improving their acting skills and providing their audienc-es with the best possible performances.

“We are all volunteers and while it is a ton of fun, it is a huge commit-ment,” she said.

Janette Oke, a well-known Christian writer was raised in the Steeves’ home. Oke’s writing museum could also be part of Pas Ka Poo Park’s historical artifacts.

Historical Society happy with offer of Hoadley Post Offi ce and Janette Oke’s writing museum

Once the funding is in place, Pas Ka Poo Park could have a welcome addition to its historical village.

Presently discussions are being held to deter-mine the feasibility of transporting the original Hoadley post offi ce and the contents of Janette Oke’s writing museum to the park.

Park administrator Cheryl Jones said the

BY TREENA MIELKE Steeves family, whom own the post offi ce made the generous offer. The famous author, Janette Oke’s maiden name was Steeves and the fami-ly lived at the post of-fi ce when it was turned into a home for the large family.

“It was a fabulous offer and we would love to do it, but we need to look at what would be involved,” said Jones. “It would be a wonderful addition to the park.

The building, which is located east of Hoadley on Hwy. 611, has an up-stairs, would be diffi cult to move and moving costs could run in the neighborhood of $20,000, she noted. Once it was at the park, more funding would be requipred as it would need to be moved onto a foundation, the fence would have to be temporarily taken down and electrical wires dis-connected.

Jones added Oke’s writ-ing museum is amazing, noting the author is now the bestselling author of over 70 books, 32 of which have been trans-lated into fourteen lan-guages. Her books have sold over 22 million cop-ies.

The well established author recalls grow-ing up, one of several

Steeves children, in the Hoadley area.

“I had good growing up years,” Oke said. “It wasn’t a big house, but it was often fi lled with people, in for a meal or an evening of games.”

She said she was a reader as a child and her love of books never left her. She began her own writing career when she became aware there were few Christian books on the market.

Her books are de-lightful tales of hard-ship, love, and enduring strength of spirit in the face of adversity.

“Life is very repetitive,’ she said. “Human needs, generation to generation are still the same. They still experience sorrow and joy and the need to be loved and accepted.”

Oke, who lives in the Olds area, received the 1992 President’s Award from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association for her significant contribu-tion to Christian fi c-tion, the 1999 CBA Life Impact Award and has been awarded the Gold Medallion Award for fi c-tion.

She and her hus-band, Edward, have four grown children, 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The Steeves house and former Hoadley post offi ce could be moved to Pas Ka Poo Park if necessary funding is raised.

The Rimbey Canalta peewee hockey team participated in a bottle drive for the provincial Peewee C provincial championship tournament coming this spring. The team raised $2,500 in the bottle drive. Photo submitted

Provincial tournament

coming this spring

As the Canalta Rimbey Renegades Peewee A play-ers and coaches prepare for provincial play downs, the host parent committee chaired by Shannon Mann is fast at work creating a tournament experience that will once again live up to Rimbey’s top notch reputation.

“People enjoy coming to our community and our hockey tournaments, we receive very posi-tive feedback” said Arna Schatschneider who serves as the tournament coor-dinator for Rimbey Minor Hockey. From Rimbey’s friendly hospitality to the lively on-ice competition, the Peewee C provincial championship tourna-ment could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some players and the host committee wants to make it memorable.

The team and host com-mittee are focused on

fundraising and assem-bling the volunteers re-quired to run the event. It will take approximately $17,000 and 100 volun-teers to host the week-end championships from March 10-13.

“So far the fundraising is off to a great start” said Pam Burchnall. Burchnall and co-fundraising coor-dinator Riley Ryden have already put the young ath-letes to work during a bot-tle drive that raised the fi rst $2,500. “The boys had a lot of fun as a team and we were all just so ap-preciative of the generous donations” said Ryden. The next big fundraising event is a pub night on Friday, January 29 at the Vault. Admission is free and the evening will in-clude music, games, a pro-gressive 50/50 and both a silent and live auction. Business and personal do-nations are appreciated, and anyone wishing to do-nate to the championship can contact Pam Burchnall or Riley Ryden.

As for volunteers, the Peewee team is reaching out to all local hockey families and to the com-munity overall. There will be many opportunities to get involved. Younger players will be selected as ambassadors and hosts to visiting teams. Volunteers will be needed for vari-ous roles over the week-end including program and ticket sales as well as fi lling timekeeping and score sheet needs. And while it may be a Peewee tournament, it’s truly a community event. Teams will travel from all over the province to compete in Rimbey and will access many local businesses and services while here. Anyone interested in vol-unteering can contact Shannon Mann.

Contact information, as well as sponsorship and volunteering opportuni-ties, is available on the Rimbey Minor Hockey website as well as the Facebook page for the event.

The siblings of the late Melba Odenbach would like to thank family and friends for their support for Mom and her

family during her stay in Rimbey Long Term Care, also Oberhammer Funeral Chapel, the Rimbey Legion, the

Red Hatters, Rimbey United Church Members, and those who made Mom’s fi nal days brighter.

Special thanks goes out to the staff in Long Term Care who gave her the tender and loving care she so

cherished. She, and we, appreciated the compassion you gave us during her fi nal days. The consideration for Mom and her family during her fi nal days was excellent.

KOENIGMarvin of Rimbey, Alta. Born March 12, 1930 -

January 6, 2016.It is with love that we announce the passing of our beloved dad, grandpa, papa, and brother (and many other cherished titles). Marvin was born in Horsham, Saskatchewan. From there, his family moved to Alberta, where

he spent the majority of his life. He went on to complete trades-school, where he obtained his gas-fi tting and plumbing tickets and went on to establish a life-long career with both the federal and provincial governments. Marvin met his loving wife, Joan (nee Gray) Koenig, in Stettler and they were gifted with three sons, Alan, James, and Mark (Cheryl Arsenault). Joan passed away in 1986, after which Marvin continued to live in Rimbey with their sons. Marvin was also pre-deceased by his father, John Koenig (1967) and mother, Nathalia Koenig (1987); Brother Wallace (1983); Sisters Eileen (1983), Lorene (1985), Viola (1989) and Burnetta (2015). His is survived by his sons, Alan (Pam), James (Debbie), and Mark; his sister Edith; brothers Vern (Evelyn) and Gerald (Carol); his six grandchildren Victoria (Carl) Haapala, Joanne Koenig, Vanessa Koenig, Kassaundra Bushey, John Koenig, and Jesse Koenig; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. On behalf of the entire family, we invite you to join us in the celebration of Marvin’s life on January 12, 2016 at 2 o’clock p.m. at Wilson’s Funeral Chapel , 6120 Highway 2A, Lacombe, Alta. In lieu of fl owers, the family asks that you graciously consider donating to a charitable organization, such as the Lacombe Long Term Care, where Marvin spent the last three months of his life being attentively cared for by the staff there. Special thanks to everyone that took time to come visit Marvin, as well as kept him (and our family) in your thoughts and prayers. Expressions of sympathy may be made by visiting www.wilsonsfuneralchapel.ca.

Edna M. PrattEdna M. Pratt (nee Bryanton) was in her 101st year and passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of January 9, 2016 at Malaspina Gardens, Nanaimo, BC. Edna was born in Bowden on May 8, 1915 to Herbert and Florence Bryanton and is survived by her brother, Carl Bryanton of Calgary. Edna, a World War ll veteran, was one of the original 150 women

recruited into the Royal Canadian Air Force. Post war, she worked with the United Nations helping to relocate the displaced persons in Europe. Upon her return to Canada, Edna worked with the Federal Government until her retirement. She was a long-standing member and supporter of the RCAF Association, The Royal Canadian Legion, The Eastern Star, and The Red Hats. She will be returning to Rimbey for her fi nal rest beside her beloved husband of 54 years, William (Bill) F. Pratt. The family wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Dr. Fletcher and the staff at Malaspina Gardens for their excellent care and attention to her comfort and care.
