Rimbey to host provincial Peewee C tournament

Rimbey has been select-ed as one of the commu-nities to host the 2016 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships.

The Rimbey Renegade Canalta Peewee hockey team will host the Peewee C tournament to be held March 10 to 13.

“The host committee is planning a memorable weekend for our players, families and community,” said Maria Tisdale from the minor hockey associ-ation. “Eight teams, from seven different zones within Alberta will play during the weekend, which means a lot of extra people visiting our little town. We rely on the support of our wonderful community to help make an event like this possi-ble.”

Tisdale said the com-mittee will organize fundraisers and arrange for volunteers and spe-cial events in the months leading up to the tourna-ment.

The committee’s fi rst fundraiser will be a bottle drive on Jan. 2. Players, families and friends will collect bottles around town and anyone who will be away at that time or live out of town may contact Pam Burchnall at (4030505-4688 to arrange for pick up.

The majority of teams competing in minor pro-vincial championship tournaments qualify by winning a zone playdown. These start in mid-Jan-uary and include up to 1,000 teams vying for the right to represent their zone at the provincial championships.

Host teams receive an automatic berth in the championship they are hosting, although they do participate in zone playdowns and have the opportunity to win their zone title.

This year Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships will be sponsored by ATB Financial and hockey fans will have the chance to watch their favorite team go for a 2016 provincial championship.

Tournaments will be hosted in communities across Alberta going as far north as High Level to Taber in the south, Provost in the east and Grande Prairie in the west.

And now, just days after the celebration, the hol-iday is all bundled up in yesterday’s crumpled wrapping paper, ready to be recycled and the new year is but an embryo waiting to emerge.

And for a quick and fl eeting moment in time there is no great holiday to celebrate.

the shoulder season –a time when golfers go into withdrawal because of the frost warnings and hockey players await with antic-ipation newly scheduled ice times.

It’s all good. It’s a time to exhale and relax.

The deadline has passed.In the weekly newspaper

world which I inhabit on a regular basis, deadline is our bottom line, our motto, our common ground, and our own secret password. Early deadline is even more deadly, so to speak!

So, for the last few days remaining in 2015, it’s nice to know Christmas and its ensuing deadlines have come and gone.

Looking back on the days between the dead-lines, it seems we’ve all lived through a whole lot of experiences, some good and some not so good, but all of which have served to shape us and, hopeful-ly, leave us a little more humble, a whole lot more grateful and maybe even a tiny bit wiser.

For me, it’s been a sea-

son punctuated with the comforting familiari-ty of Christmas concerts and cheerful Christmas greetings, ringing out like silver bells in the frosty December air.

And, also for me, the holiday season has been highlighted by unexpect-ed kindnesses that have lighted up my world to an even brighter hue than the Christmas lights stretched across the top of my ga-rage door.

These unexpected kind-nesses dropped into my world remind me of a line taken from the famous Desiderata which says elo-quently: with all its sham,

drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beauti-ful world.

As 2015 rolls to a fi n-ish it is nice to know that traits such as kindness and compassion still exist, even as our world contin-ues to be shaken by wars and rumours of wars.

For each and everyone of us, the year ahead is full of uncharted territory, a thought which could be slightly disturbing.

But, once again I am re-minded of the beautiful words of The Desiderata:

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars: you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt, the universe is unfolding as it should.

And so it seems to me if we simply believe those words and trust that they will be as accurate in 2016 as they were in 1692 when The Desiderata was found, we will eliminate a lot of useless worrying from our lives.

And, despite the eco-nomic downturn, the con-tinual upheaval over Bill 6 and the overall unrest that shrouds the entire world, allow optimism to fl ourish.

And allow ourselves to have a truly happy new year!

dy-cheeked babies and all? I have no idea. Celebrity worship in general stupe-fi es me. Maybe royal-wor-shippers need to know a bit more about the cere-monial head of our gov-ernment and the system from which she hails.

Want to know why parts of the United Kingdom hold independence votes? Well, let’s look at some-thing that occurred in Ireland between 1845 and 1852 called the Great Potato Famine. The fam-ine, which caused untold damage to Irish society, is commonly blamed on a simple vegetable disease called Phytophthora infes-tans; royal family apolo-gists like to stop the story at this point.

However, historians who aren’t concerned with pro-tecting the English royal family’s reputation are acutely aware of plen-ty of other factors which entered into the famine, including greed, landlords and English bluebloods

and their attitude towards anyone they considered “common.”

Irish property was in the hands of the “ascen-dancy class” (wealthy Englishmen) at that time, who were the quintessen-tial “absentee landlords.” They hired managers to collect exorbitant rent from Irish folk who were expected in many cases to raise a crop on a parcel of land less than fi ve acres in size. The Irish farmers had to not only pay rent, they had to support their families as well. Virtually the only crop possible was potatoes.

In 1845, the incompetent government of the UK was aware of a disease appear-ing that held the threat of at the very least severely affecting potato harvest (The Gardeners’ Chronicle and Horticultural Gazette was reporting the news). British Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, one of the bluebloods, commented to a friend, there’s “always a

tendency to exaggeration in Irish news”.

The blight attacked the Irish potato crop that year and for many afterwards. Thus began the Great Potato Famine. However, the English kept exporting food from Ireland, even at the height of the famine.

Then the landlords, blue-bloods and other spong-es attacked. Despite the effects the potato famine was having on Irish house-holds, landlords didn’t cut them any slack. Rent was expected to be paid, de-spite the Irish country-side being wracked with starvation. Then the mass evictions started in 1847 for as little as 4 pounds, about $8 today, a tactic some historians feel was the English strategy from the beginning. Clear out those Irish and we can keep their land ourselves, plant our own crops etc. pondered the bluebloods (Helen Litton’s 2006 book The Irish Famine: An Illustrated History, page

91).The effects of the Great

Potato Famine were cata-strophic…for the Irish. It’s estimated about 1 to 1.5 million people died from starvation or disease with-in 10 years, according to a census commonly thought to have underestimated the deaths, plus the so-called Irish Diaspora that occurred during the fam-ine. About 250,000 Irish were fl eeing the country per year during the fam-ine, many coming to North America.

Historians differ on why the famine wasn’t predict-ed and why so little was done to stop it. And why the “ascendancy class” ex-ploited it for fi nancial gain.

Think about that the next time Entertainment Tonight wants to show you what the royal family is up to.

Deadline extended for recycling

programRimbey town council has extended its deadline to

renew registrations for the recycling program.Acting CAO Donna Tona said the deadline was original-

ly slated for Dec. 31 but because council is still working on the 2016 budget the deadline has been extended to Feb. 14.

“I don’t want anyone to worry,” said Tona, “as the dead-line has been extended.”

A total of 28 people have signed up for the grass recy-cling user pay program.

Under the terms of the program residents purchased an 80-litre bin at a cost of $11 plus tax and registered with the town for a fee of $3.

Items allowed in the yard compost disposal include leaves, grass clippings, mulch, fl owers and plants, un-screened compost (decomposed yard waste materials), non-invasive weeds and tree and brush prunings.

“We are not taking new registrations at this time as council has yet to make a decision (as to if the program will continue), said Tona.

Earlier this year close to 500 residents signed a petition requesting the town to re-instate the grass-recycling pick up, but at fi rst count, only 14 homeowners signed up for the user pay program.

The Rimbey Community Chorus held its annual Christmas Concert on Dec. 15 to a standing room only crowd.

For many years, the chorus has been entertaining the community in the true spirit of Christmas with a variety of traditional and modern Christmas carols.

The chorus is led by the accomplished and dedicated director, Annette Boorman. Members are drawn togeth-er by the love of music and of singing in four-part har-mony. This year there were more than 50 individuals, some of whom have sung with the chorus since its beginning, while others are newcomers.

The chorus was accom-panied by two gift pianists, Charlote Bonella and Grace Bennik.

Several of the selections showcased the talents of percussionist, Connie Jensen and Flautist, Jody Blackmore.

For the past several years, free-will donations from the evening performance have gone to support the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

The party, to be held Dec. 31 at the Rimbey arena will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. and will fea-ture free public skating as well as crafts and face painting. There may also be a photo booth set up.

A table with play dough and colouring crafts will be part of the fun for the youngsters.

Hot chocolate will be

served and the conces-sion will be open so there will be food available.

Recreation clerk Jossie Krenzler said a similar party was held last New Year’s Eve at the arena and it was quite success-ful which prompted the community services de-partment to make it an annual event.

“We had a fairly good turnout,” she said. “The party is early enough that it gives the parents an opportunity to attend their own adult party af-terwards and also allows the kids to have their

BRUNETLouis A. Brunet of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at the age of 80 years. Louis will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his beloved wife of 58 years, Fern; his son, Dennis (Kati) Brunet of Spruce Grove; and his daughter, Donna (Louis)

Regnier of Rimbey; in addition to two cherished grandchildren: Brandon Regnier of Whitecourt, Alberta; and Amber Regnier of Red Deer. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by four sisters; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Louis was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Eveline; his son, Ronald; and twelve siblings. With respect for Louis’ wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. All Bentley in novice

tournament fi nalIt was an all Bentley fi nal

in the Bentley Canucks Minor Hockey Novice Tournament that ran December 11, 12, 13.

For the fi rst time in many years, Bentley is proudly icing two Novice hockey teams for the seven and eight year olds - the Bentley Mighty ‘Nucks and the Bentley Canuckleheads. In this home tournament both won all three of their division games to place them fi rst in each division meaning they met each other in the fi nal game on Sunday.

After a hard fought match up, which was visi-ble on many of the player’s faces, the Mighty ‘Nucks came out on top 8-4.

The Mighty ‘Nucks had won their three division games with scores of 5-4, 9-3 and 9-5 while the Canuckleheads had won their games 7-4, 8-7 and 7-0.

In the fi nal game, the MVP’s were Easton McKinlay for the Mighty ‘Nucks and Harper Walker on the Canuckleheads. Winning “Heart and Hustle” was Saydee Zarantonello for the Mighty ‘Nucks and Max Burris on the Canuckleheads.

Coach for the Mighty ‘Nucks is Kelly McKinlay with assistants Pat Madden, Scott Dickson and Shaun Woroschuk and manager is Heidi McKinlay.

The Canuckleheads coach is Ryan Walker with Will Kingma, Rick

Wells and manager Joclyn Walker.

Other teams compet-ing included the Rocky Roadrunners who were second in Division 1 and the Sylvan Lake Castaway Sports Lakers who fi n-ished second in Division 2.

There were two teams from Bentley, two teams from Sylvan Lake, two from Airdrie, one from Rocky and one from Eckville.

Support from the area continues to be tremen-dous with 40 sponsors listed, about 35 items on the raffl e tables, and a wonderful bunch of vol-unteers.

The arena concession offered a special all week-end. Weather did cause some travel concerns but couldn’t deter the play.
