1. 1. Treaty of Waitangi The Maori are signing the Treaty. The British took over sovereignty of the Maoris land and the Maori version was slightly different. They thought that the British were taking governorship. The Maori think that the British are going to give them protection, but they want the Maoris permission to take over there land and rule there country.
