In the year 2000, Israel's Holocaust remembrance center Yad Vashem posthumously awarded Ho Feng-Shan the title "Righteous Among the Nations," the nation's highest civil honor, for saving the lives of more European Jews than anyother single individual during the early years of the Holocaust. As China's Consul General to Vienna from 1938-1940, he issued exit visas to any Jewish person requesting them, allowing them to leave Austria legally and reach safety elsewhere in the world via Shanghai and other Chinese ports. Hundreds queued up outside his consulate doors from morning to night seeking aid; Dr. Ho issued over 4,000 such visas, by conservative estimates, despite orders from his superiors to desist. On one occasion, an armed SS officer held him at gunpoint while he interposed his own body to protect a Jewish family. Ho Feng-Shan never breathed a word of his heroic actions to his wife, children, or friends—they were discovered by his family and Yad Vashem years after his 1997 death.

Ho Feng-Shan, like most Holocaust rescuers, started off as a bystander, attempting to maintain a life of normalcy afterGermany's sudden annexation of Austria (Anschluss). However, when confronted with the jagged reality of the unfoldingHolocaust—the beginnings of the extermination of Jews on Kristallnacht—he could no longer collude with genocide by refusing to act, becoming complicit every time he averted his eyes from need. In post-war years, after being reassigned to Brooklyn in New York City, Dr. Ho became fascinated with racial prejudice, seared so forcefully into memory by his years in Nazi-occupied Austria. He identified prejudice as the most important social condition in American society, observing and experiencing it in hiring, rent, voting, and education practices as well as tracing its roots through American history—especially slavery and immigration history.

I have come to admire Ho Feng-Shan deeply—for his awareness and compassion, humanitarian courage, and unwavering conviction during perhaps the twentieth century's most horrific time and place. As Dr. Ho himself writes (in a poem quoted in Movement IV), "The convictions of heroes [are] not lightly formed". Though the above history may seem flattened into the distant past, Ho Feng-Shan's character and actions stand robust, real, and three-dimensional, coming alive now for you in music. May we never forget, but remember—and by remembering, learn.

Performance Notes:

Form:

If excerpting this piece is necessary for time or programming reasons, Movements II and III contain the dramatic coreof the story and may be performed successfully as a standalone pair (~10 minutes). Movements I and IV provide the framework for the inner movements and should be included together if possible. However, if absolutely necessary, I-IIImay be performed as a standalone unit (~16 minutes).

If smaller performing forces are required, a piano/vocal version of this piece also exists for performance. Please contactthe composer at [email protected] to request the piano/vocal version.

Movement I (~6 minutes):

Pronouncing "Luoyang": for English speakers, Luoyang should be pronounced as: "LWO - yong". The "yong" rhymeswith "long"; "Luo" has no rhyme in English.

String Glissandi: in mm. 105-108, the pitches of the string glissandi are less essential than the contour of the glissandimotion itself and the rhythm of the accented arrivals at the highest possible pitch of the string.

Timpani Tuning Gliss: Similarly, the 29" Timpano (or 28" if no 29" Timpano is available) should gliss from the highestpossible pitch to the lowest possible pitch in m. 108 over the course of the eighth-note quintuplet.

Sprechstimme: The goal of using Sprechstimme in m. 110 and following is to create a distorted, psychologicallyoff-kilter sound. The contour of the line is more important than preserving any particular notated pitches.

Flute and Clarinet Trills and Flutters: In m. 120 and following, the Flute and Clarinet trading off trills and flutter-tongued notes should sound like a single bubbling, murmuring texture. If more breaths are needed than notated, the players may make one of their fluttered notes an eighth note and take an eighth note breath, making sure it is covered by the otherplayer's trilled note. This allowance should carry through any time this texture recurs, as it does throughout the piece.

Movement II (~5 minutes, 30 seconds):

Flute "Beatboxing": In m. 33 and following, the Flute has an effect that is intended to be like an instrumental analogueto "beatboxing." This effect uses a combination of low staccato notes, a sharp "pah" outflow of air on a mid-range note, andaccented flutter-tongued notes on D4 and D6. The Flautist should feel free to take necessary liberties to realize theintended effect in performance. Have fun with it!

"Klezmer-like", Improvisatory Feel: The Violin and Clarinet share a solo line in m. 33 and following. It should feel free,quasi-improvisatory, and reminiscent of Klezmer music, as if performed by a street band.

Bowed Crotale on Timpani: In m. 64, the Percussionist is asked to bow a crotale on the edge of the 29" Timpano. Thiswill require detatching the crotale from its usual mount rack. Once the bowed tone is produced, move the Timpano's pedalup and down until the sound dies away. The intended effect is for it to sound like the residual echoes of a wail or cry,gradually dying away. Several tries may be needed to hash this out in rehearsal with the player; feel free to experiment!

Swelling, Lush Texture: in m. 104 and following, the texture is very lush and has a number of cells or patterns in theinstrumental part accompanying the vocalist. It would be easy to overwhelm the vocalist here; take care to keep all theinstrumental textures underneath the soloist. The una corda pedal on the piano may be used if needed.

Movement III (~5 minutes):

Violin and Cello "White Noise": In m. 10 and following, the Violin and Cello are asked to tremolo, sul ponticello, adlibitum. The goal is to create a sheet of psychological "white noise" as a backdrop for the vocalist's Sprechstimme. TheViolin and Cello should vary the speed and contour of their glissandi and should not be in rhythmic sync with each other.Generally speaking, the indicated dynamic should act as a guideline to the speed and intensity of the white noise.

"Tsssss" and "Shhhhhh": In m. 14 and several other places throughout the movement, players are asked to create a"tsssss" or "shhhhhh" sound with their mouth. These should have a sharp, sudden attack with a gradual decrescendoover the timespan shown. This effect is mirrored in the Flute by blowing air through the instrument, not on a pitch,creating a sharp, non-pitched outflow of air through the instrument.

Knock on Wood: In m. 17 and 18, the Cello is asked to knock on the wood of the body of the instrument with theirknuckles. Combined with the Percussion and Piano parts, this sound should give the musical impression of a demandingknock on a door.

Piano Sostenuto Pedal: At m. 82 and following, achieving the desired effect in the piano part can be tricky. The idea isto catch the octave bass notes with the sostenuto pedal, perform the right-hand four-note groupings with molto legato,and keep the B2 left-hand notes accented and staccato. Admittedly, this can be difficult and take some coordination, sobe sure to give the passage the practice and attention it needs.

Movement IV (~8 minutes):

Vibraphone Double Strokes: In m. 15 and following, the Vibraphone's sixteenth-note figures are intended to be realizedby double strokes (RR, LL, etc.) rather than alternating strokes (RLRL, etc.). This should achieve the desired accentuationas well.

Quasi-Metric Modulation: In m. 125 going into m. 126, there is a quasi-metric modulation to transition from 6/8 timeto 4/4 time. It's not mathematically exact (there is no way for these particular tempos to do an exact metric modulation without decimal points), but in terms of musical feel, it should feel as if the two eighth-note groupings in the Violin areequivalent to two sixteenth-note groupings in 4/4 time. In other words, the Violin rhythm should sound the same oneither end of the modulation. Conductors, it may help to conduct m. 125 or 124-125 in three (quarter notes) rather thantwo (dotted quarter notes) in order to facilitate the modulation.

Free Rhythm in Piano, Violin, Cello: In m. 185 and following, the intended effect is for the Piano to cascade freely. Inorder to achieve this, the Violin and Cello have fast rhythmic figures that they can repeat ad libitum, not in sync with eachother or with the Piano; the other instruments simply sustain. My recommendation would be for the conductor to catchthe downbeats of m. 186 and 187 for the instruments with decrescendoes, resuming time on b. 2 or 3 of m. 187 in order tocue the re-entrance of the soloist.

Twelfth of March, nineteen thirty-eight—silver tone, reverberant, summons meto distant lands, my ancestral home—memory, evanescent, woos me.

Vienna: the Chinese-Austrian Bund—slivers of memory, of time—the poetryof Du Fu, of Li Po, rivulets of ambianceand rhythm.

Mr. Feng’s fingers brush the piano, unfurling—like calligraphy—with yearning strings of the erhu,iridescent in soaring song, spiritstransfixed by music, music.

Now my son Monto’s turn; he enters, song rising—

“From whose home secretly flies the sound of a jade flute?It's lost amid the spring wind which fills Luoyang city.In the middle of this nocturne I remember the snapped willow,What person would not start to think of home!”

A consulate aide enters, voice raised:“the German army has crossed the Austrian border—they will arrive here by morning.”

We crowd close to radio, transfixed by chatter—the sizzling snow of an imminent future, the present now past.

Thus did the Anschluss begin—March the twelfth, nineteen thirty-eight.

II. Exodus

Another shattered window—I gaze, transfixed, compelledby others passing wordlessly through streets blanketed with jagged shards.

Amid the debris, a gilded star—a wordless accusation, a badgeworn by another no longer here, whose stain smears across my impotent hand.

Turning, I stride downtownpast blank and stoic faces, unseeing,the weight in my palm another phantom screamfrom ghosts of the city—of crystal night.

Vienna has changed since Anschluss—I must hurry, boots wading through pools of fractured glass—of offered souls—to the consulate, before they take another.

A storm of weathered papers and hasty ink—I sign, again and again,visas for Shanghai, for Beijing, for Hainan,

pressing them firmly into the hands of fathers,of daughters, mothers, and sons—emblems of hope, a deliverance bestowed

from a desperate man to desperate souls,never enough to atonefor those uncountable fragments of trodden glass.

I do not know how many this will save.I know only motion, and shaded lamp-light,

where past and future dance like shadows,drawing ever towards the horizon of memory.

Ambassador Chen calls, barking orders,barring any Jews from leaving Austria.

“Leave politics and Hitler to me—in the meantime, do as I say!”

I politely assent, but my rapid pen already scrawls another.

These poems and this composition are dedicated to the memory of Dr. Ho Feng-Shan, on whose life they are based, for his heroic actions saving countless Jewish lives during the Holocaust.

III. Friend

A revolver, the barrel so closeI smell its powder, its pungent rust.“Schutzstaffel—we will search this house!”

Frau Rosenberg freezes—and I interpose, impede the officer.He pontificates, words spiralingoutwards, thickening the air. “Der Führerrevoked your foreigners’ privilege—no Chinese or Austrians now, only Greater Germany.”

The revolver cocks. “What kind of person are you?Identify yourself !” In my coat pocket,a frayed badge burns, knowingly. I swallow, speak:

“It is easy to identify me. But who are you?”—He thrusts the revolver to my chest.“We shall not tolerate arroganceor foreign sympathizers—will youwaste your life on a Jew?”

My eyes reach the youth’s masked blues,his fingers trembling on the tarnished holster. Uncertainty meets tacit resistance,our fixed gaze marking suspended time; the revolver lowers—he turns, withdraws.

I stand again in Frau Rosenberg’s house—emptied, the family China-bound—and wonderif this city’s stilled dwellings are victoriesor sepulchers, measures of friendshipsaved or abandoned.

IV. Prejudice

I.Every night, I see two menapproach a door, gaze at its sign.Whether the secondis acknowledged by the first,I can’t say.

Is one taller as he enters,the other’s ground-affixed gaze indicativeof knowledge, the despair of cycles?I can’t tell. And I can’t speakof why the latter, dark man must return to frostbitten street,reflecting on that closed door. Sometimes its sign reads For Rent,at others Help Wanted. Once was scrawled—Give me your tired, your poor,eroded by brevity of memory.

II.America, land of immigrants—of blazing-white freedom, and its black shadow. In the nineteenth century came Jews, Germans, Italians, Irish, stain of "the other"fading through time, absorbed by likeness.Then my brethren—Chinese, Japanese, Filipino—shades of chromatic grey. Yet its source drivesdeeper still, to an ancient polarity of white and not—African-Americans cannot be blended to neutrality, glazedby sameness.

The second man reachesthe weathered door, its question looming.

“The gifts Heaven bestows are not by chance the convictions of heroes not lightly formed. Today I summon all spirit and strength, urging my steed forward ten thousand miles.”

This grafted hope I would bequeath—to transplantor else to forget, to cycle once more.Memory, evanescent, woos me.
