DESCRIPTION
In the summer of 2007 I visited Right To Play projects in Tanzania to see how sport can contribute to peace and development. This is a short impression of the experience.TRANSCRIPT

RIGHT TO PLAY &SAMHOUD
My experiences with Right To Play in Tanzania,
or where our monthly Euro goes.

This is how most people know Tanzania: relaxing wildlife reserves such as Serengeti; endless nothingness filled with exotic animals.

However, most people come for entirely different reasons. The country houses over 4 million refugees on the run from practically every war in the region.

This summer I went to see what Right To Play does for these refugees and other Tanzanian children in the most remote areas of the country.

RTP is a humanitarian organisation founded by Johan Olav Koss and is currently active in over 40 countries in Africa and Asia.

They provide equipment, training and other necessities so children can play; through schools and on community level.

We joined in their games, lost matches of football and spoke to children, trainers and RTP staff. Our objective: to understand the importance of playing for children.

As there is no scientific data about the effect RTP activities have on the livelihood of people, I’d like to share two stories that, for me, prove success.

“Should I go to school?”

“Can I let this boy touch me?”

Therefore, I think our Euros are spent well. Thanks to our support, children can be children, play and learn useful lessons about a safe and healthy life.
