Chapter 1
Jasmine Phillips August 24,
Hey Kenya, hows did your first day of college life go? You forgot to message me yesterday.
Kenya James August 25,
Jazzy, I miss you girl already. To sum up my first day of college, the word I would give is okay.
When mom and I arrived on campus, the campus was much beautiful than it had been when we
visited in April. When we came in April, it was raining and pretty cold, there was a lot of mud on
the ground and I was so disgusted because I had mud all on my shoes. But now its like the
campus had a makeover. The grass here is greener than I have ever seen grass before. The
flowers bloom beautifully here, like the ones which bloom in the mall. Like near the capitol, the
lawns and trees here are manicured, the buildings are old but they have been renovated and
unlike Howard, all the classroom building are unified and not separated from each other.
Jasmine Phillips August 25,
Wow! Your campus sounds so beautiful Kenya. So tell me about those roomies.

Chapter 1
Kenya James August 25,
Child wait, you love drama. I want to tell you about my dorm. Remember I told you a while ago
I told you that in the admission letter and on their website they said all freshmen were going to
be triple, well they didnt let us down. There are 6 dorms on this campus and I am in the smallest
one, which is surprisingly the honors dorm. The dorm is really small: the hallways here are
narrow and the dorm room is really small. I like the bathroom though, its extremely big and has
6 showers and 6 toilets; hopefully I wont have to wait in line to take a shower in the morning.
Jasmine Phillips August 25,
Kenya, be careful. Germs spread like crazy in college, which is one of the reasons why I stayed
home. Im already sick like 5 times out of the year, I dont need another 6 or 7. Now, Im sick
and tired of hearing about what everything looks like, I want to know about people, how are the
people up there? Tell me about those roommates, theyre probably crazy.

Chapter 1
Kenya James August 26
Ok, lets start with Crystal. She is a Nicki Minja wanted be. Girl, all she does is listen to rap
music and watch BET. This girl watches BET more than Lil Chrissy back in DC. She speaks
slang too, but her slang is a little dated. Jazz, this girl be like, morning homie, and wuz up
cuz, like me and her are from the same hood. OMG, Jazz she has apple bottle jeans, like the
ones the Ricans wear, lol. Yesterday, we had group process, which was just the freshmen class
grouping up and touring around campus showing us basically the same thing we seen during
orientation and open house. So this chick Crystal just so happen to be in my group and she
annoyed the hell out of me. First, she started talking to other members of the group in slang, girl
she was calling most of the guys, homies and she started walking around like she had swag. Then
she got into an argument with another female group member about how Lil Wayne being the
greatest rapper alive and she had the nerve to ask me to back her up, I wanted to slap her. She
totally embarrassed me in front of this guy who caught my attention yesterday.
Jasmine Phillips August 25,

Chapter 1
Kenya James August 26
Jazzy, Im sorry I havent messaged you since yesterday. This week is freshman week and they
have a lot of events and activities going on around campus. Yesterday evening, out on the quad
there was an activities fair, so the freshmen can like choose to join different clubs and whatever.
So, I found out that this school has a gospel choir and a black student union. Who would have
thunk it, little old Wilberforce had a gospel choir and a black student union. Unfortunately, both
organizations are lacking members so I decided to join. Denelle Anderson, who is a senior, is
president of both clubs. Hes really nice too, Denelles got a funny laugh and a big personality,
well he drew me in and now Im in two college clubs now.
Kenya James August 26
So, I was standing by the Black Student Unions booth and Davis the guy who I met during group
process came over and joined our conversation. Oh darn, I forgot to tell you about him during
group process. Well, his name is Davis Young, hes from Philly, and no he is not a wanna be
rapper because I know that is what you are thinking. He is extremely cute, with is brown eyes
and perfect smile, I need to stop. Like me, Davis enjoys literature and he even writes poetry. His
mom wants him to go to school for pharmacy since there pre-pharmacy program is top-rated but
he wants to go for creative writing, isnt that amazing. Sorry girl, I cannot talk for long, because
Denelles fraternity, which is the only black fraternity on campus, is having a party tonight and
Davis and I are going together, Im wearing that coffee dress I brought when we went shopping
last week. Talk to you tomorrow Jazz.

Jasmine Phillips August 27
He sounds adorable Kenya. Just please be careful, guys from Philly are charmers, they know
how to woo women, so keep your game face on. Unfortunately for me, community doesnt have
a freshman orientation, so I dont meet my new class until Monday. Have fun at that party and
give me details tomorrow, bye boo.
Kenya James August 28
I have something big I need to tell you Jazz. Last night after the party, I invited fresh prince back
to my room to chat. I asked Davis to recite one of his poems. As hes reciting, I am so intrigued I
dont even notice that my room Natalie, the one who doesnt speak to me or Crystal, came in the
room. Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you about Natalia. Okay, this girl is from white-bread, middle
class America. She hates Obama, she watches Oreily every night and I suspect she has never
went to school with minorities before, let alone live with them. She doesnt say much to crystal
and me, and she leaves the room with her laptop when Crystal watches BET. I did not want to
stereotype her as a racist, but her actions last night solidified my opinion about her. Oh crap, Jazz
that is my RA, I will message you later and let you know what happens.

Chapter 1
Kenya James August 28
Hey, I am back again. I was just talking to my RA, Erica. She wanted to talk about the whole
Natalia situation, yesterday. Jazz. I was embarrassed and hurt over the situation, every time I try
to expect the best out of someone they let me down. Ok, let me fill you in about what happen.
So, After Natalie ran away, Davis and I started to talk about an incident he had during open
house when he sat next to a white girl in the cafeteria and the girls dad pulled her away from the
table. I felt so bad for him, are we living in the 60s OMG, these people need help. So while we
are talking, someone knocked on the door, I think its Natalia and maybes she scared to come
into the room, but it turned out to be a police officer. Im like WTH. The cop told me that Natalia
is afraid and too uncomfortable to come back in the room and she wanted my companion
removed from the room. I was just about to lay into this officer when Davis came from behind
and told me he will catch up with me tomorrow in the lounge area. I was so embarrassed and I
felt like I couldve done more. Jasmine, I dont know what to do, I texted him and apologize for
the whole thing, Natalia hasnt been back and Erica wont talk to me about the situation until
Natalia is there to make her Case. Crystal and I talked over the situation today at breakfast, but
she cant understand what Im going through, because I am the first black person she actually got
to know. Isnt that crazy, the BET junky doesnt know any black people. Where should I go from
here?

Chapter 1
Jasmine Phillips August 28
WOW, I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT HAPPEN KENYA, THATS JUST CRAZY. There is
nothing you can do about Natalia, girl. She will just have to come around. My advice is to dont
confront her, she has an opinion all already embedded in her mind about black people; you have
to show her indirectly that she and her family are wrong. As for Davis, he will understand, he has
already encountered racism before so he knows it is not your fault, Natalia is craz and there is
nothing you can do about that. Well, let me know what happens when you finally talk to Ms
Natalia. But you never told me about the party, was it sick?
Kenya James August 28
Thanks for the advice girl. As for the party it was alright. It reminded me of the house parties we
use to go to in mid school. The only difference is the houses are wider here than in D.C. Most of
the people there were upperclassmen. I met three other freshmen: Jacky, Amberia and Mills.
Jacky is from Coatesville, which is near here, but more like Philly than here, and the others are
from Philly, like Davis. They seem pretty nice; like me, the girl Amberia came for Speech
Pathology and Jacky and Mils came here for criminal justice. I like them a lot, they are goofy
especially Mills. He is a bit of a show and Jazz when you visit me in October I want you to meet
him b/c you like his type. Last night at the party, Mills got in to a battle with another freshman to
impress Denelle and his frat members. Jazz this boy started crumping, lol, everyone who was
watching the battle could tell Mills was a little inexperience in crumping, but we did stop him
and lol, Mills twisted his ankle and lost the battle to the dude. I give him his props though b/c he
didnt back down. Jazz OMG, my roommate Natalie just came back in the room, I dont know Comment [7]: LovehowthisdescribesaspAfAmculturewithwhichsomereaderswillbe

what to say to this girl, I never been through a situation like this before. Crystal just stood up and
shes about to talk to her, Im chat with you later!
Jasmine Philips August 28
Ah Kenya! Just stay calm. First, ask her if she is okay and then question her about the hold
situation from yesterday. You cant scare this chick, because then shell continue to have a
negative opinion about us. OH CRAP, you probably already confronting her as I type. Oh well,
good luck Kenya!
Kenya James August 28
People are surprising. I was shocked when I saw Crystal approach Natalie, when Natalie walked
in the room. I told Crystal, I was scared about talking to Natalie when she would come back. I
think the girl stayed the night at a friends room. Anyway, Crystal asked Natalie how she was
and Natalie looked back and forth between us and said ok, then she tried to walked to her bed,
she has the loft bed and Crystal and I beds are both bunked. Anyway, I digress. Instead of
confronting her and asking her why she ran from the room when Davis was here, Crystal told
Natalie that if she ever felt uncomfortable she should tell both us and that she should not be
afraid to come to us.

Chapter 1
Kenya James August 28
I hate when I press enter. MyFace is stupid for making people press the Enter Key to post
something. Anyway, when Crystal told her this my mouth went wide open and I was like
WHAT! Why did she stand up for me? It caught me off guard, I mean were friendly to each
other but thats about it. Maybe she wants something from me or she and Natalie are secretly
plotting behind my back, IDK, but I was shocked. When Crystal finished talking Natalie looked
at me and I nodded my head and co-signed Crystal, heck the less drama the better in my opinion.
Now it feels really awkward in this room, Natalie is keeping to herself and Crystal and I are
about to go to the freshmen picnic. Tonight, I will chat with you about how this picnic went, Im
so excited I am going to see Davis. Ok girl, Crystal is ready to go, talk to you later.
Jasmine Philips August 28
Im proud of you Kenya, for a black person who lives in DC that must have took a lot of balls to
do a MLK and turn the other cheek, especially to racism, but like I said before if you would have
acted a fool her opinion of us would have been confirmed. Forget her, and focus on class and
getting through school. Dont start doubting Crystal, she seems like she can be a true friend, just
b/c one white person doesnt trust you, doesnt mean that others wont you have to have faith and
be optimistic.

Chapter 1
Kenya James August 28
I love college, lol that song is so stupid. But I know why that guy wrote it, college is fun. At
the picnic I spent some much needed time with a certain person and stopped Amberia from
beating the crap out of Crystal, not for speaking and acting black, but for flirting with Mills. The
picnic was at the town park. The park here is pretty big for this small town, but everywhere you
go in this town is surrounded by grass and trees, heck I can have a picnic right outside my dorm
room. They had a lot to do there, wiffleball, frisbe, sack racing and so much more. Davis and I
did the sack racing. I was nervous about seeing him, especially after the Natalie situation but he
seem as if he moved on and I did to. We spent most of the time sitting by the lake inside the
park, talking about anything and everything. He told the one thing he loves about this place, he
loves the serenity of this place. His city is much more chaotic then DC and he never got a chance
before just to sit in a park by himself and think. He told me that he loves the city, but he said that
cities are not peaceful and I agreed with him. Jazz, he is just so deep, I really like him. We have
not kissed yet and he hasnt tried to kiss me either, hes very respectable and I love it. I have
church tomorrow, and Mills is driving us.Davis is not going with b/c, well, Davis doesnt
believe in Jesus. I know what you are thinking Jazz and let me explain tomorrow. Gotta go! Luv
u!
