Need

We need members to man the gate at the Naracoorte Show, Saturday October 17th. If

there is enough, only a couple of hours and then a shift change. This will give us access to

the Naracoorte showgrounds for January for a reduced charge, and allow us to have

cheaper entries for participants in the extravaganza.

Gossip from outside the arena

Michelle Dupree has been seen out and about with her new horse.

Many members have migrated north to the Royal Adelaide Show for some fun and competition and yummy treats. Good

luck to all from those waiting at home for news of successes.

To hand by all accounts the new trend within South East circles of owning new and unusual chooks is becoming very popular

amongst a few of our members. To date at the Royal the Lock family have a Champion Chinese Goose, Champion All Breeds

Goose, Champion Elizabeth duck, Champion Andalusian hen and a very proud Eddie Lock, arena builder extraordinaire, has

his first Royal Show Champion Cockerel. The CLM team have been going great guns in the Show Horse section with placings

in a number of classes as has Nikki Ballinger and her ponies. Congratulations. We anxiously wait for more news from the

competition arenas!

As you looked around during the day it was clear that the benefit of the four month

competition was showing. Riders showing more confidence and horses swinging

through the tests showing more understanding of the level that they are competing at.

Being the final the scores at every level were so close it was also clear that some

nerves were starting to filter the cracks in the weak movements of individuals tests.

I heard a good conversation recently “When wanting to win becomes the goal, good

training and riding disappears”

We should all remember that this was the objective of the Winter Series from the

beginning; to be used as a training exercise and an opportunity to test your training by

inviting the horse to have a go at the next level up, whilst having the opportunity to

gain qualification at official events in the level that was well established. An

opportunity to introduce new horses and competitors to the art of dressage

We have to acknowledge the sad but often seen at higher levels of competition

(Europe) where the stakes are higher, the abusive training and riding that turns to the

abuse of the horse. I would have to say we find this not only in the sport of dressage

but also in many other equine pursuits when the need to fulfil human satisfaction for

winning, overwhelms the need to take time for the horse to understand and learn.

Always we should be looking for understanding and working each horse’s

development ability at their own rate.

This year the introduction of the Team Event was such a hit, the competition was

fierce but fun, and the scores so close it was not until the final moment that the

Champion Team was found.

Congratulations to all and thank you to the committee for your continued efforts to

bring this competition to the forefront of dressage competition for the local

enthusiast. Bring on next year!

The best arena building team ever! From left: Henry and Finn Dennis, back Eddie and front Lucy Lock. Their reward a safe ride

in the arena trailer to the lolly storage point…..Thank you team great fun!

11.10.2 Etiquette for Warm-Up Arena

As there are many horses warming up in a restricted area it is important that all riders have knowledge of the etiquette

required in group riding. This ensures safe riding and achieves harmony in busy areas

a) safety is paramount and a collision should be avoided at all times

b) before entering the warm-up area make sure the gateway and immediate track are clear

c) riders should pass left shoulder to left shoulder when on the track

d) when not on the outside track, e.g. on a diagonal line, riders should give way to horses on their left

e) the more progressive gait has priority on the track

f) halt should not be on the track

g) walk should not be on the track and does not have right of way

h) trot has priority over walk

i) canter has priority over trot

j) lateral work has priority over all paces

k) when circling, anticipate your return to the track so as to not stop the flow of other riders

l) mounting, dismounting and gear adjustment should be done off the track

m) consideration should be given to behaviour of other horses in the arena that may upset your horse

n) it may be necessary if your horse is upsetting others to leave the area

o) if a horse is upsetting the majority, an Official should be sought with a view to requesting that horse’s removal for safety’s

sake

Please read below, those people competing at the Championships in a couple of weeks time. A need to know from the

EA Rule book under which the warm up area will be governed. For everyone's safety

Judges Seminar Held at Naracoorte 29th & 30th August 2015 Judge Educator Felicity Yuncken

The first day held was held at the Naracoorte Work Options Function Room, a superb facility which lent itself perfectly to

enable Felicity to display her excellent repour with everyone in the room, along with her ability to engage and encourage

people. Everyone became comfortable enough to interact without fear of judgment which was outstanding, so much so

that eventually she needed to ring the bell (judges bell) to quieten everyone down in order to carry on to the next subject.

No one wanted to go home at the prescribed time, only the need to put up an arena for the following day necessitated a

conclusion at the function room.

The following day was again very successful, with club members giving generously of their time and energy to give good

examples of what a judge will come across during the days judging. Felicity took horses from Preliminary through to

Elementary showing movements and common problems, offering advice to the riders on how to improve. After judging

tests at each level, marks and comments were analysed in a constructive and educational way. Riders and judges felt no

pressure or embarrassment regardless of their comment or discussion.

The success of the weekend was evident with all who attended singing the praises of their experience. Congratulations to

Ceri Johns from Adelaide for participating as an H Candidate along with Amanda Lock, June Whitehead and Andrea Reidel-

Carrison; wonderful to have these four begin their EA judging careers. E Level judges Janene Clark from Adelaide and Margie

Stuart reaccrediting and Carly Boon were accrediting at this new level for her. Although the Seminar was for H Candidates

and F and E Level accreditation, Susan Thornley was able to use the weekend as a workshop requirement for her D Level.

Meredith Phillips and Jessica Mulraney attended both days. Lester Masters, Pricilla Baker, riders and strappers also

observed on the second day.

Thank you to all who participated and to Felicity for the long trek to Naracoorte to make this so successful To the riders

and their horses a special thankyou Lucinda Raedel and Aussie, Michelle Dupree and Star and Kate Dennis and Ninj

for the preliminary movements. To Kristy Debruin and Roo and Ann Dodd and Maya for the Novice movements. Amanda

Lock and Brandy and Keely Murch from Bordertown and her pony for the Elementary level.

horse woman. It’s taken a while for the jumps rider but finally she

is embracing the dressage training and adding the skills to her

already large kit bag of experience.

Kate is one of those lovely volunteers who rings up and says “what

time are you putting the arenas up? Right I will be there”

YAY. So not only has she put arenas up on a couple of occasions

and brought her delightful sons with her to help, but she has

without hesitation, given herself and her lovely th/bred jumping

horse Ninj, to do demos for our judges clinic. Kate, we are not only

thrilled to recognise you as our volunteer of the month this month

but are excited that you have joined our great club and hope you

enjoy all it has to offer. Pictured here on young horse George.
