Prologue Growing up on a farm in Texas, halfway between Houston and Galveston, young boys had to be careful when studying music … playing the clarinet, flute and piano did not sit well with the jocks.

During the early-to-mid Sixties, in order to get around this problem, I would mow my piano teacher’s yard twice a week … the front yard on Tuesday and the back yard on Thursday … then sneak into her house and learn music composition on her piano.

Some twenty-five years and a satchel full of travel and life experiences later I set out to research and write about two significant events …

The American Civil War ( Tales From The Debatable Land ). This section contains the concert collection in play list order.

The Night of Broken Glass ( Kristallnacht ). This section contains key selections from the unfinished opera.

In addition, a third section is presented which contains personal favorites of prose, poetry and lyrics.

Tales From the Debatable Land John Singleton Mosby, the Gray Ghost, was a Confederate cavalry commander in the American Civil War. His command, the 43rd Battalion, 1st Virginia Cavalry, known as Mosby's Rangers, was a partisan unit noted for its lightning quick raids and its ability to elude Union Army pursuers and disappear, blending in with local farmers. The area of northern Virginia in which Mosby operated was known during the war and ever since as Mosby's Confederacy and The Debatable Land.

There was a shameful and desperate period in the history of the United States, during which brothers fought brothers, fathers fought sons and neighbors fought neighbors … all as a result of their beliefs and perspectives regarding personal and political issues of the time.

Mothers, wives, sisters and girlfriends were unwittingly caught in the cross-fire which erupted and continued through the four year period 1861 – 1865.

Three years of research and writing resulted in this collection.

Virginia _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] Life on the Virginia farm is good, From bailing hay to chopping wood. The tobacco crops grow to the sky, Next to the fields of wheat and rye. Oh, Virginia. Oh, Virginia. [refrain] Overhead, the clouds were getting darker, Up ahead, the road was getting shorter. From behind, they were getting nearer, On his mind, he could hear her. [refrain] [instrumental] [refrain] Oh, Virginia. Oh, Virginia. Refrain -----------------------------------------------

He left his ghetto town, Looking for a rainbow. He never settled down, Just blew which way the wind would blow. He lived his life like a cowboy; He rode alone, his thoughts were his home. He lived his life like a cowboy; So far away, running from yesterday.

The Winds of Men _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] When the winds of the Rappahannock, Come riding o’er the ridge. The way that Mosby’s Rangers, Used to gallop o’er the bridge. From the north as far as Free State, To the south at Lee’s Ridge Road. Come the winds of the Rappahannock, Come the winds, to bear the load. It was a question of commitment, To have industry or slaves. The sins of the fathers and mothers, Lay their brothers into the graves. It was a difference of opinion, That divided up the land. The ignorance and the selfishness, Turns to greed in the minds of man. [refrain] From farms in the mid-Atlantic, Some wore blue and some wore grey. Their families used to plow the land, But now the widows pray. When they parted at the crossroads, There was a smile and then a tear. Some rode in satisfaction, And the others rode in fear.

[refrain] As boys they would plant the seeds, To grow their crops of wheat. But now as men, they live the sin, Of death and then retreat. So many men and their horses, They would lay their bodies down. The winds of men and eternal sin, Spread the ashes o’er the ground. [refrain] [refrain] Refrain -------------------------------------- But don’t cry for me Mosby, I’m a man of the field. I gave up the sun, to pick up a gun. I’ll fight with you, till the war is won. Then we’ll pray, Yes we will pray, These wounds will heal.

The Conflict – Part 1 & 2 _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] Say goodbye to the soldiers, As they march off to war. Say goodbye to the soldiers, They come from near and far. Just say goodbye … Just say goodbye. Say goodbye to the grassland, It will soon be laid to waste. Say goodbye to the grassland, Soldiers kill it in their haste. Just say goodbye … Just say goodbye. Say goodbye to the families, The ones you may never see again. Say goodbye to the families, Who may lose you like so many men. Just say goodbye … Just say goodbye. Say goodbye to the young man, The one you knew when he left home. Say goodbye to the young man, In war, he’ll sometimes feel all alone. Just say goodbye … Just say goodbye.

Say hello to the soldiers, As they march back from war. Say hello to the soldiers, They came from near and far. Just say hello … Just say hello. Say hello to the grassland, The ones we’ll start to plow again. Say hello to the grassland, The resting place of so many men. Just say hello … Just say hello. Say hello to the families, The ones that were torn apart by strife. Say hello to the families, They pray that they can start a new life. Just say hello … Just say hello. Say hello to the young man, The one you knew when he left home. Say hello to the young man. He’ll sometimes feel all alone. Just say hello … Just say hello.

Under Cover of The Night : Serenade No. 1 _________________________________________

[refrain] Sittin’ by the fire John looked up at me, he said, Captain can you tell me all the things that you see? He said, tell me how you do all the things that you do. And tell me Captain what you think is gonna happen to you. I said, [refrain] I said, John, let me tell you where I think it began. I got into this war as a very young man, with a Dream and desire to put an end to the Blue, I said, John let me tell you what I think we can do. I said, [refrain] -------- tempo change -------- Sometimes in war, There rises a man, Who’s larger than the land That he once walked upon. It seems that this war, Has made me that man. I do the best that I can, I’ve had no training as a soldier. I just wake to each new day, And on one knee I pray, For enlightenment Before I set the plan. But, like the fight we fought before, Well fight again, tonight, once more, Using that simple plan, That carries us this way.

[refrain] [refrain] Refrain ------------------------------------------ Under cover of the night, We’d ride in safety, Far beneath the pale moonlight. Keep our enemies in sight, Then pick the terms, Of when and where we choose to fight. We’d do alright.

Tell Me Please : A Soldier’s Affair _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] If you were just a friend of mine, Then why in time, Did I fall in love with you? If you didn’t care, Then why did we share, All those rainy afternoons? I can see the light, From the rainbows up above. I just don’t know what it means. Were we just having fun, Or, are we in love? Tell me if you know, tell me please. As we lie here listening to the rain, I feel the pain, Of the price that we might pay. When this all began, I never planned, For it to happen quite this way. Don’t speak, Just softly lay your head upon my chest. I need to feel you close to me. Can we just think of now, And forget about the rest? Tell me if we can, tell me please.

As the daytime fades into the night, It feels so right, To have you lying next to me. But, when the morning comes, With the rising sun, You’ll be just a memory. I wish that we could find, Some place to hide away. Some place where we could be free. To live the kind of life, That I know was meant to be. Tell me if we can, tell me please. If you were just a friend of mine, Then why in time, Did I fall in love with you? If you didn’t care, Then why did we share, All those rainy afternoons? I can see the light, From the rainbows up above. I just don’t know what it means. Were we just having fun, Or, are we in love? Tell me if you know, tell me please.

Pauline - Solo _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] I was dreaming, We were sitting by the side of a winding road. Stars were gleaming, We could see for miles by the light of a silver moon. [refrain] I was thinking, Maybe we could find a place to call our own. Something simple, A place to raise a family, a place to call our home. [refrain] I start to weeping, When I think of all the simple things we never shared. It seems so foolish now, but, It must have seemed to you at times, I never cared. [refrain] I woke from dreaming, I was sitting by the side of a winding road. The stars were gleaming, I could see by the light of a silver moon. [refrain] Refrain ----------------------------------------------------

When I think of you, A smile comes to my face. But, when I look at you, It makes my pulse race. And we’ll fly, We’ll fly across the ocean. Yeah, we’ll fly, We’ll fly across the sea. Oh, we’ll fly, We’ll fly across the ocean. Just you and me.

It Sounds a Little Like Your Voice _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] I gaze into your eyes, That sparkle up my life. I could gaze there for hours. It would be of my own choice tonight, I hear someone calling. Through the trees, I hear someone calling. It sounds a little like your voice. It sounds a little like your voice. All the instincts are too familiar, To stand out in the rain. Find yourself waiting so desperately, To hear it over, and over again. [refrain] I stare into the skies, That light up my nighs. I reflect on all the memories. Then I stand there, In perfect poise tonight, I hear someone calling. Through the wind, I hear someone calling. So here, you come back to me, Bringing back sweet memories. Handing down an old destiny. Shadows locked into the night again. Shadows locked into the night again. I’m a child who just pretends. I’m a child who just pretends. Here it comes again.

[refrain] I stand inside the rooms, That once filled our hearts. And if I stood there for hours; It would be of my own choice tonight. I hear someone calling. Through the halls, I hear someone calling. All the instincts are too familiar, To stand out in the rain. Find yourself waiting so desperately, To hear it over, and over again. [refrain] So here, you come back to me, Bringing back sweet memories. Handing down an old destiny. Shadows locked into the night again. Shadows locked into the night again. I’m a child who just pretends. I’m a child who just pretends. Here it comes again. Refrain -------------------------------- It sounds a little like your voice. It sounds a little like your voice. It sounds a little like your voice. It sounds a little like your voice.

Morphine _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] Get me the doctor, I’ve been wounded in the leg. Please help, I need him, I’ve been hurt, don’t make me beg. We’ve been fighting since the dawn, We can’t last for very long, I feel the end is close at hand. As we fought, I took down four, The other side, they took down more, And I can’t seem to understand. Hey, where’s the doctor, I’ve begun to feel the pain. I’m getting weaker, As my life begins to drain. We were twenty, now we’re five, Two can barely stay alive, One has a gun shot to the head. I’ve crawled to safety and I see, I’ll lose my leg below the knee, Without the drug, I’ll soon be dead. I need the doctor, I can’t take this anymore. I need the drug, and when it’s done, I’ll need some more. Morphine takes the pain away, Helps me make it through the day, I lie here silent on the cot. I feel that surge inside me grow, Like lying naked in the snow, I think I need another shot.

I feel that surge inside me grow, Like lying naked in the snow, I think I need another shot. I feel that surge inside me grow, Like lying naked in the snow, I think I need another shot. I think I need another shot. I think I need another shot. I think I need another. I feel that surge inside me grow, Like lying naked in the snow, I think I need another shot. I think I need another shot. I think I need another shot. I think I need another. I need that shot to take me home, I need that shot, I’m all alone. I think I need another shot.

We’ll Go Dancin’ _________________________________________

That summertime moon is dancin’, Across that August sky. I just feel like dancin’, But, I can’t tell you why. [refrain 1] Been working for old man Johnson, He barely makes my pay. We work from dawn to midnight, And then you’ll hear him say. [refrain 1] Four bushels of wheat on Monday, Two bushels of corn next day. Can’t wait to get to Sunday, Gonna bow my head and pray. [refrain 2] -------- tempo change -------- Sing a song about the south land, Sing it loud and proud, Let it ride up on the wind, just let it ride. Sing a song about the south land, We’ll all come back again. We’ll all come back again. That river of wine is flowin’, The winds of change are blowin’, That river of wine is flowin’ now. All along the Blue Ridge mountains, The men, they scream, they’re shoutin’, That river of wine is flowin’ now.

Sing a song about the south land, Sing it loud and proud, Let it ride up on the wind, just let it ride. Sing a song about the south land, We’ll all come back again. We’ll all come back again. We’ll all come back again. [refrain 2] Refrain 1 -------------------------------- Can’t you feel all-a-that rain? Can’t you feel all-a-that rain? Refrain 2 -------------------------------- Can’t you feel all-a-that rain? Can’t you feel all-a-that rain? When the sun comes up, We’ll go dancin’. Can’t you feel all-a-that rain? Oh, can you feel all-a-that? Can’t you feel all-a-that rain? Oh, can you feel all-a-that? Can’t you feel all-a-that rain? Can’t you feel all-a-that rain?

Carry me back, to old Virginny, That’s where the cotton and those corn and taters grow, here we go. That’s where the birds warble sweet in the springtime, That’s where the heart of ol’ darky, he longs to go.

The Negro Soldier _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] I worked the fields till sixty-one, Then left the farm in Richmond, And began to use a gun. I whispered softly in her ear, That I’d be home within a year. We fought on for near four years, Through the rain and snow, And the clouds of smoke, And the dying soldier’s tears. I didn’t know when we began, If I could shoot another man. When the time was right, We began to fight, I took a careful aim. To kill the man, and Not to leave him lame. To kill the man, and Not to leave him lame. I think the way that most men do. That the war is wrong, And it won’t be long, Till I come back home to you. On days like this I often pray, It never had to be this way. [refrain] [refrain]

When the war was done, I thought I’d won, The chance for a better day. But the color of my skin got in the way. The color of my skin got in the way. Refrain -------------------------------- They claim the fight was over me. To cut the chains that bind me, And set my people free. I wonder if they really knew, All the pain that I’d go through. When the war was done, I thought I’d won, The chance for a better day. But the color of my skin got in the way. The color of my skin got in the way.

Only Time Will Tell : Serenade No. 2 _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] In the morning when I rise, Wipe the sleep out of my eyes, I look around to see, All the things that I’ve become. Living life on the run, And what’s to come of me. [refrain] Moses walking by my side, I just beamed with pride, He was walking next to me. All the way from Abingdon, To the streets of Washington, Just a faded memory. [refrain] Two-hundred men now follow me, I wonder if they see, The man behind the mask. They’ve been with me since sixty-three, In the fight for liberty, How long can it last? … won’t you, [refrain] Somewhere, out there, Battle rages, And men are waging war. Somewhere, out there, Men are dying, And the widows are crying again. And the widows are crying again. And the widows are crying, won’t you, [refrain]

Refrain -------------------------------- Open up those gates to heaven, I’ve been living in a hell. Open up those gates to heaven, Only time will tell.

He Came From Nowhere _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] He came from nowhere, Riding in from the sun. This was just a small town, There was no place for a gun. Said he’d ridden from afar, Said he’s lookin’ for John Parr, And I told him, To lay your gun on the bar. Lay your gun on the bar. He seemed like such a smart man, Not more than twenty-four. He must have been a smart man, Because he turned for the door. Said he’d be back one day, For the debt that he had to pay, And I smiled; As he took his gun from the bar. He took his gun from the bar.

He came from nowhere, Riding in from the sun. This was just a small town, There was no place for a gun. Said he’d found a better way, Said he’d seen the light of day, And I cried; As he laid his book on the bar. He laid his book on the bar. He seemed like a smart man. Not more than thirty-one. He must have been a smart man, From the book he drew his gun. Said he’d come back today, For that debt he had to pay, And I died; As they laid me gently on the bar. They laid me gently on the bar.

Going Home _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] I feel so cold, I feel so numb; I can’t hear what you’re saying, Has it begun? Quiet whispers, they surround me, Voices floating on the wind. All the lights that were fading, Come back again. I’m going home I’m going home Going home I’m going home [repeat with crescendo] Lying on the frozen ground, I found that I could breathe no more. I’ve seen things that many men, Have never seen before. Moses on my right side, I could hear him say, You’ve done your share of living, God’s forgiving you today. Two long years of fighting, And I’m lying here alone. My wife and child will miss me, They’ll be on their own. Can’t you give me back some time? Then I heard Moses say, You’ve done your share of living, God’s forgiving you today.

I don’t want to die, No, I don’t want to die! I don’t want to die! I feel the pain, I feel the sorrow, What’s the gain? There’s no tomorrow. I’m going home.

Displaced _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] The wind is cold, The road is long, We’ve been riding for some time. Through the night, Into the dawn, Can’t find a place to lay my head. [refrain] My shoes are worn, My clothes are torn, I haven’t eaten for two days. I’m growing tired, Of all the pain, And the misery, I’ve passed along the way. [refrain] Do you recall? We had it all, The skies above us were blue. When we began, We had a plan, To make all of our dreams come true. [refrain] The wind is cold, The road is long, We’ve been riding for some time. Through the night, Into the dawn, Can’t find a place to lay my head. [refrain]

Refrain -------------------------------- If you take me in, From the howling wind, I’ll be your friend, from today. Oh, but I don’t know when I’ll pass this way, again.

The Road I Go : Serenade No. 3 _________________________________________

It’s a long and lonely road, this road I go, It’s the road I choose to go, you know. Such a large and heavy load, the load I hold, It’s the load I choose to hold, you know. I’ve been waiting such a long time, Not knowing when or if, I’d see that sunshine. All I seem to get is rain, Life filled with pain, While I’m searching for that rainbow. [refrain] It’s a long and lonely road, this road I’ve gone, It’s the road I choose to go, no more. Such a large and heavy load, this load I’ve held, It’s the load I choose to hold, no more. I’ve been waiting such a long time, Not knowing when or if, I’d see that sunshine. All I seem to get is rain, Life filled with pain, While I’m searching for that rainbow. [refrain] Refrain : I thought I knew where I was going,

Thought when I got there, that I’d have it my way. Then the winds, they started blowing, Took a ride on a landslide, tried to run, but I couldn’t hide. Tried to find some sanctuary, prayed to God and the Virgin Mary. Yesterday, if I only knew you then the way I know you today. I would have lived you; I’m quite sure, in a wholly different way. Can we turn back the clocks, oh can we yesterday? Can you give me back some time? Don’t make me face today. Can we turn back the clocks, oh can we yesterday?

Goodbye Virginia _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] There’s a gold moon on the rise, Half of Richmond is still on fire. Horses dying from the smoke, And the flames keep gettin’ higher. We’ll have to close that big house down. Union troops have entered town. They’re pressing onward through the rain. We’ll have to make it to the train. [refrain] We packed the files, we stacked the gold. Took it to the train, like we were told. We sealed the boxcars with a lock. There’s no more time left on the clock. The men are fighting, hand to hand. We’ll hold them off as best we can. If we must we’ll bear the pain, Just save yourselves, we’ll save the train. [refrain] I wish I was, in the land of cotton. Old times there, are not forgotten, Look away, just look away, Dixie land. Oh, my Dixie. In Dixie land, that’s where I was born, So early on, that frosty mornin’, Look away, just look away… [refrain]

Refrain ----------------------------------- Goodbye Virginia, So long, and farewell. We gave them all we had to give, But, they drove us straight to hell. Need to find munitions, and then We’ll need to find some men. We’ll take this train to Danville, And start again.

Kristallnacht Kristallnacht was a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Ger-many and parts of Austria on 9–10 November 1938.

The name Kristallnacht comes from the shards of broken glass after Jewish-owned stores and synagogues had their windows smashed.

1938 Interior of Berlin Synagogue after Kristallnacht

________________________________________

Even though I have Jewish heritage on my Mother’s side (Schilling), that’s about as close as I come to the Jewish faith … growing up as a white, anglo-saxon protestant (Missouri Synod Lutheran).

When presented with demo tapes of several Kristallnacht compositions, Cantor Mikhail Manevich (Washington Hebrew Congregation) remarked that the body of work would contribute to the bridge between Jewish and non-Jewish constituencies.

On Earth Day, 1990, I was invited to play several scores from Kristallnacht at the sunrise service held at the Airlie Center (Airlie Foundation), Warrenton, Virginia. Multiple programmable keyboards were set up in an adjacent field to the pavilion with EV speakers arranged to bounce the sound off of large trees and hillsides. As the sun rose and crested the hill, the music started.

The event had a Pink Floyd-esque vibe in both stage craft and performance.

This was the only time during my music years that I was awake, much less performing, this early in the morning and getting a standing ovation.

Kristallnacht _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] Israel, where have you gone to my son? Will you come back tomorrow? Israel, where have you gone to my son? Will you bring me only sorrow? Kristallnacht is the night of broken glass, The soldiers have come at last, And it looks like this is the end. Kristallnacht is the night of broken glass, The soldiers have come at last, Can we rebuild again? And if so, when? 4:00 am on some misty morning, Shadows in the darkness, They came without a warning. If I could lay here until the daybreak, Maybe they would pass me by, And I won’t have to die. [instrumental] [refrain]

Israel, where have you gone to my son? Will you come back tomorrow? Israel, where have you gone to my son? Will you bring me only sorrow? Kristallnacht is the night of broken glass, The soldiers have come at last, And it looks like this is the end. Kristallnacht is the night of broken glass, The soldiers have come at last, Can we rebuild again? And if so, when? [refrain] Refrain ----------------------------------- Can’t you feel the fire? Oh, can’t you see the spires, They’re burning. The flames keep getting higher, Oh, can’t you see the spires, They’re burning.

Todes Strasse _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] [refrain] The moon is casting a longer shadow on the wall; I hear the footsteps, and they’re coming down the hall. If there’s a God, then send his messengers to me; Break these chains that bind me. I need an angel of the night. I need an angel of the night. I hear the whispers, and it’s not the wind; It’s just the anguished cries of a thousand lonely men. I see the lightning and I hear the thunder roar; Outside my door. I need an angel of the night. I need an angel of the night. The wind is cold and it was winter. We were hiding in the ghetto, They had hopes that we’d surrender. But, we told them that we’d stay, This was our homeland. We were just like other men, and To destroy us was a sin. [refrain] [refrain] The tanks moved closer to the wall. When the General sent his messenger, This place was going to fall. He gave us till the daybreak, To surrender to his men. We knew that we could not survive, But, had no plans for giving in. [refrain] [refrain]

We used the night to save the children. We led them down the halls, and Then they’d vanish through the walls. Maybe one of five will get to freedom; Learning to survive, To keep the race of God alive. [refrain] … [refrain] And then the morning came. [instrumental] … [refrain] … [refrain] And then the morning came. Refrain ----------------------------------- We’ve been fighting all our lives. Just homeless refugees, In a world outside.

Come To Freedom _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] Can’t you see the writing on the wall? Does it matter to you at all, What they say you are? That yellow star upon your chest, Makes you different from the rest, You can’t run very far. The days are filled with quiet desperation. The nights bring anguish and anticipation. -------- tempo change -------- I am a member of the underground. Moving Jews, from town to town. Hiding out, by the light of day. But, when the sun goes down, We’re on our way. Won’t you come, come to freedom? Won’t you come, and start anew? Oh, won’t you come, come to freedom? Oh, won’t you Jew? -------- tempo change -------- How much is a man’s life worth in Deutschmarks? Can I pay you with a Franc? Or, will you take an English Pound? How much is a man’s life worth in Deutschmarks? Are you really who you say you are? Do you represent the underground? Can you help us? Can you help us?

Tell Me That You Care _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] I was standing in the line, I’d been standing there for some time, With a star of David proudly showing. I was waiting in the wind, Confessed of all my sins, By the light, my life would soon be going. [refrain] As the moon fell from the sky, A tear cam to my eye, I could see that the dawn had started breaking. They would take me from my cell, For a moment’s worth of hell, At the thought, my body started shaking. [refrain] [instrumental] I was standing in the line, I’d been standing there for some time, With a star of David proudly showing. I was waiting in the wind, Confessed of all my sins, By the light, my life would soon be going. [refrain] [refrain] Refrain ----------------------------------- I can’t wait until tomorrow, Just to see you standing there. Oh, tell me that you care.

Other Prose, Poetry & Compositions

The two operas,

Kristallnacht and

Tales From the Debatable Land

were very intense periods of research and composition.

However, before, during and after, there were numerous influences and inspira-tions for additional compositions.

This section presents several personal favorites.

Ride The Wind _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] I was walkin’, when I heard a blind man talkin’, About the things he’d like to see. I was wonderin’, just how far I might be wanderin’, If I was him and he was me. I was thinkin’, just how far this road might take me, Before I’d have to turn again. Hard decisions, well, they face me at the crossroads, The results of which I question now and then. [refrain 1] [refrain 2] [refrain 1] Looking for tomorrow, maybe it can take me, Where I couldn’t seem to get to yesterday. Oh, the clouds with silver lining, and All the bright lights, they’ll be shining, Does it really make a difference anyway? [refrain 1] [refrain 2] [refrain 1] Refrain 1 ----------------------------------- Ride the wind. Just ride the wind.

Refrain 2 ----------------------------------- Sitting by the wayside, Waiting for the low tide, So I can walk that beach again. Looking for the sunshine, That’s where the beach is all mine, It’s the life I choose to spend. -------- tempo change -------- I know I’ve been Walking on the wrong side, Won’t you take me back, my friend? Life gets so hard, just like a landslide, I don’t know where I’m going, Or where I’ve been. Rock of ages won’t you cleft for me? Let me hide myself in thee. Down through the ages, Those men have been mistaken, When they talk about the things They think they’ve seen.

Enola Rain _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] No one could hear the children crying, No one could hear them as they prayed. No one could hear the children crying, The day that it rained from Enola Gay. The day it rained from Enola Gay. -------- tempo change -------- Lightning strikes, And the serpent flies across the room. Oh, holy night! Here comes the messenger of doom. [refrain] -------- tempo change -------- Little yellow boy, Can’t seem to find his toy; He seeks the shelter from the rain. Little yellow girl, With a hand full of pearls; Can’t seem to deal with all the pain. No one could hear the children crying, No one could hear them as they prayed. No one could hear the children crying, The day that it rained from Enola Gay. The day it rained from Enola Gay. -------- tempo change -------- [refrain] [refrain]

Refrain ----------------------------------- Waves are rolling in, With a thundering of hooves; And the wind is howling again, Like a pack of angry wolves. The darkness of the night, Giving shelter to the foe; And then the flash of light, They were no more.

The Rappahannock Fiddler _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] Three days of riding and another full day, My god, we’ll soon be there. Sittin’ by the banks of the Rappahannock River, Not a worry, not even a care. When up from the middle, came a man with a fiddle, Sayin’, Son I got a story to tell. About the night and the fight with the Pennsylvania 9th, They drove us straight to hell. They were singin’, Glory, Glory Hallelujah, Glory, Glory all the way. Glory, Glory Hallelujah, Fightin’ like the only thing remainin’ was the judgment day.

Vagabond Bar & Grill _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] The mist is slowly moving in from off the shore, As she looks out to the bay. The life she lives now, is not the life she lived before, Now she lives from day to day. [refrain] The winds of time have worn the lines into her face, As she stops to dry the tears. She knows deep down inside, she’ll never leave this place, Because she’s been here too many years. [refrain] Refrain -------------------------------------- David starts to sing at nine, his usual time, She gets the drinks for table four. As he sings, he says he loves her, and Through the microphone he smiles; She needs his love, he needs a whore. [refrain]

As she sits and she remembers, Her life sits on the window sill. Collecting dust and losing memories; She’s making tips, At the Vagabond Bar and Grill. She’s making tips, At the Vagabond Bar and Grill.

It won’t be long before she’s on her own again, She knows this love will never last. She cries herself to sleep at night, Through the anguish and the pain; Tonight’s no different from the past. [refrain] The mist is slowly moving in from off the shore, As she looks out to the bay. She counts her change, and she combs her hair, Then she shuts and locks the door. She’s made it through another day. [refrain]

American Gypsy _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] She quietly sits down there beside you, To tell you of her secret desire. Of how she wants to spend her life around you; What she really wants is to set your soul on fire. What she really wants is to set your soul on fire. [refrain] She claims that all her contacts come from heaven, But I know that all her contacts come from hell. She’ll take you down, before you know what happened; She knows her job, and she does it very well. She knows her job, and she does it very well. [refrain] You’ll soon become just one of one hundred, What remains of your emotions wash to shore. What she doesn’t kill, she’ll cripple for a lifetime; There’s no doubt that there’ll be one hundred more. There’s no doubt that there’ll be one hundred more. [refrain] Refrain -----------------------------------

Leather wings, and a bad dream, I’ve been hiding. Gotta run from the Gypsy’s screams, I keep sliding. Casting emotions out to sea. Oh, the Gypsy, she’s got control of me. Casting emotions out to sea. Gotta run, gotta hide, gotta get away, From the Gypsy. Run and hide from the Gypsy.

Living In The Wasteland _________________________________________

[instrumental introduction] Running o’er that velvet wasteland, Exhausted with each breath I take. A waterfall of wine awaits me, O’er that hill, I’ll never make. Fourteen days have passed behind me, Three I’ve seen without a meal. I begged for life beyond the dunes, My death, this day, would not be sealed. [refrain] The bird did fall, no voice of warning, There I laid, one of five. Unconscious till the break of morning, Four lay dead, and one alive. Had I a tool, they’d rest beneath, The soil, so that my hands could heal. I had no tool, but buried two, The others made a buzzard’s meal. [refrain] As I watched, my hunger grew, I wondered how an eye would taste. If I were fowl and needed fare, A delicacy of human waste. The first few days passed very fast, With five men’s rations left for one. The sun would rise to cook the eggs, Then go to bed, the moon would come.

[refrain] The stars would dance around the sky, While sand and bush took fear away. Gave me shelter for my dreams, Each night I took the time to pray. Guided by the hand that made me, I walked on for a while. Every inch seemed like a foot, And every foot seemed like a mile. [refrain] -------- tempo change -------- We flew into the morning sun, I never asked for reasons why. They sent the best, and one was left, And now it seems that he will die. [refrain] Refrain ----------------------------------- I’m all alone in the desert, I’m all alone and on my own. Came to the land, To save the life of a man. And now the desert is my home. And now the desert is my home.

It Matters To Me _________________________________________

To my twin brother, Michael, who passed away on May 12, 2009. This piece was originally written as a poem when we were teenagers … then scored for music several decades later.

[refrain] I remember, when we were only ten, The way we played along the shoreline. Getting hurt, every now and then. I remember, when we found out daddy died, The way you looked at me, I looked at you, Then we cried. [refrain] I remember, the first time we left home, We got a room at the Magnolia. We were finally on our own. I remember, back in nineteen sixty-nine, When the letters came from selective service, You got yours, and I got mine. [refrain] I remember, how we struggled to survive, The way we leaned on one another. Doing all we could to stay alive. I remember, when you left to go away, I tried to act like nothing mattered, When you left, I kneeled and prayed. [refrain] [refrain]

Refrain --------------------------------------------------- Doesn’t all we’ve been through matter to you? The highs, the lows, All the things we used to do. Doesn’t all we’ve been through matter to you? It matters to me.

One Day _________________________________________

I have covered a number of songs throughout my career, composing new arrangements to meet my performance style. Sometimes performing in Country music roadhouses, the patrons had no idea I was performing rock-n-roll tunes! This composition by Uriah Heep has always been one of my favorites … and is included here.

One day … One day. One day … One day. Didn’t I tell ya, Everything was gonna be alright. I never doubted, It was just a matter of time. And though I’ve traveled, Across the desert of despair, I knew I’d get there, One day … One day. How times have changed, I’ve been rearranging everything; But, I can’t change the love I give, When I get back home to you.

One day … One day. One day … One day. Didn’t I tell ya, Everything was gonna be alright. I never doubted, It was just a matter of time. And though I’ve traveled, Across the desert of despair, I knew I’d get there, One day … One day. I’d get there one day.

I am the same, It’s just a game that I choose to play. But, remember I can lose as fast as I’ve won, One day … One day. I still remember the hole in the wall, Where we used to sit and they said we’d fall. The dusty yard and the broken down barn, Where you and me used to carry on. But, it’s gone now. It’s gone now. [instrumental]
