Richmond Theatre’s Community Curators look back on 110 glorious years of Richmond Theatre
Supported by the Richmond Theatre Trust,
our anniversary celebrations continue with
projects that mark the Theatre’s heritage.
Pictured are the newly recruited volunteer
curators for our Heritage Lottery Funded
project: Richmond Theatre 110. They have
met with the Richmond Theatre archivists
Norman Fenner, Colin Draper and Richard
Broadhurst to learn more about the history
of Richmond Theatre and to take their
first steps in curating the Richmond
Theatre 110 exhibition. Both the exhibition
and a specially devised play, written by
local young people, will be unveiled in late
summer 2010. There are still opportunities
to get involved by sharing your memories
of Richmond Theatre with us. Either
contact Eleanor Packham by email
or speak to one of our Reminiscence

THE AWARD-WINNING HIT COMEDYBY RICHARD HARRIS
In a dusty church hall, ex-professional dancer Mavis Turner
holds her weekly tap class. Every Thursday, in stumbles her
well-intentioned but not overly talented troupe - the awkward
but hugely enthusiastic Lynne, snooty Vera, streetwise Maxine
and the rest of the group - all brought together to dance as
if no one is watching, and hopefully no-one ever will!
That’s until they're invited to perform at a charity gala.
As disbelief is replaced by sheer terror, can this bunch
of amateurs pull together and put on the performance
of a lifetime?
Starring Brian Capron, known to millions for his award-winning
portrayal of the sinister Richard Hillman in Coronation Street
and Anita Harris, one of the brightest singing sensations of
the ’60s who famously set pulses racing as Nurse Clarke in
Carry On Doctor, this hilariously funny and heart-warming
play proves that in dancing as in life, it’s always better
to follow your own tune.

KILLER THRILLER FROM THE UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF CRIME
By Theatre Workshop, Charles Chilton,
Gerry Raffles and Members of the Original Cast.
Title suggested by Ted Allan.
A show that combines the emotional punch of Birdsong,
the satire of Blackadder and the edgy squaddies’ humour
of Black Watch - that’s Oh What a Lovely War.
Created in 1963 by Joan Littlewood and her revolutionary
Theatre Workshop, this tragi-comic version of WW1 changed
the way we think about war forever.
A motley collection who sing, play instruments, dance
and clown come armed with sketches, songs and stories
for your entertainment, including poignant songs like Pack
Up Your Troubles, Keep The Home Fires Burning and
It’s A Long Way To Tipperary.
Co-directed by Erica Whyman (Our Friends in the North,
A Doll’s House, Look Back in Anger), and Sam Kenyon
(Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunset Boulevard),
this is musical comedy with a tough, dark heart.

OSCAR WILDE’S HIGHLYCHARGED MASTERPIECE
8
By Oscar WildeDirected by Jamie Lloyd
How pale the Princess is! She is like the shadow of a white
rose in a mirror of silver...
The brutal power of ancient myth collides with twentieth
century decadence in Oscar Wilde’s dazzling verse tragedy.
Salome, stepdaughter of King Herod, agrees to perform the
mysterious dance of the seven veils but demands in return the
head of the King’s most infamous prisoner – John the Baptist.
Wilde’s Salome is a lyrical yet shocking piece of storytelling
from one of the greatest writers of the last two centuries.
It is fragile, savage and shimmeringly beautiful, rendered
in exquisite poetry and unforgettable theatrical images.
Headlong and Curve Theatre, Leicester, present a vivid
contemporary production of this rarely-seen masterpiece.
Jamie Lloyd is one of the most acclaimed young directors in
British theatre. Recent work includes Polar Bears (Donmar),
Piaf (Donmar and West End), Three Days of Rain (West End)
and the award-winning The Pride (Royal Court).
Headlong is one of the country’s most innovative theatre
companies. Under the artistic directorship of Rupert Goold,
recent work includes the critically acclaimed productions
of Six Characters in Search of an Author (West End)
and ENRON (West End/Broadway).
‘HeadlongTheatre is thecountry’s mostexciting touringcompany’Daily Telegraph
Dave Thursby was a hugely successful television comedian,
a national treasure, a devoted husband, a model client for his
agent and a staunch friend to his faithful gag writer, Harvey.
But when Dave unexpectedly pops his clogs, these close
companions are left bereft and some of them may even be out
of a job. Unless, of course, the repeats, television specials,
biographies and newspaper tell-alls can fill the vacuum.
But who is best placed to exploit the legacy?
Tom Conti plays Harvey alongside a fantastic cast of
performers including Diane Fletcher and Royce Mills
in this hilarious and fast paced comedy from the author
of such classic TV series as Rising Damp, Duty Free, Only
When I Laugh and Home to Roost. Eric Chappell’s script,
crammed with great jokes, reflects a lifetime of working with
comedians and he understands the ego of comic genius
better than most - exposed hilariously in Wife After Death.

THE MAN FROM STRATFORD
Written by Jonathan Bate
Shakespeare is the greatest writer the world has ever known.
But we know nothing about him. Or do we? In a magical
tour-de-force, Simon Callow, one of Britain’s greatest
actors, tracks down the real William Shakespeare,
bringing to life both the man and the unforgettable
characters – lovers, kings, soldiers and clowns –
who have since conquered the world’s stages.
Following the world-wide success of The Mystery of Charles
Dickens (West End/Broadway) and hot on the heels of
his sell-out hit Dr Marigold & Mr Chops, Callow joins
forces with Jonathan Bate, pre-eminent Shakespeare
biographer and editor of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s
Shakespeare: The Complete Works, to fill the stage

Tim Whitnall and directed by solo-maestro Guy Masterson,
Morecambe is a must-see for all fans of classic
British comedy.
So come laugh, come cry, and celebrate ‘the tall one
with glasses’, who had that twinkle in his eye and
shared it with us all.

Music by Steve Brown
Book and Lyrics by Steve Brown and Justin Greene
From the book by Viv Nicholson and Stephen Smith
Directed by Craig Revel Horwood
Stylish, classy and bursting with energy, it’s not surprising
that Craig Revel Horwood (Strictly Come Dancing) and Sarah
Travis’ musical theatre production of Spend Spend Spend!
won Best Musical last year for The Watermill.
Described as a cross between Billy Elliot and Blood Brothers,
it follows the rags to riches to rags story of Viv Nicholson,
a coal miner’s wife from Castleford who won £152,319 on
the pools in 1961, at that time the biggest sum ever won.
The amazingly talented 12-strong cast act, sing, dance
and play all the music, creating a truly extraordinary
theatrical event not to be missed.

Penelope Keith and
Peter Bowles star in
The RivalsBy Richard Briey Sheridan
Directed by Peter Hall
A delightful tangle of romance, fury
and deception, Sheridan’s masterpiece,
The Rivals, is a sprightly period romp.
Penelope Keith (Entertaining Angels,
The Importance of Being Earnest) and
Peter Bowles (Relatively Speaking,
The Unexpected Man) starred together
in one of the most watched British
sitcoms of all time, To the Manor Born.
The Rivals will see them sparring
on stage for the first time.
Directed by Peter Hall, Sheridan’s
extraordinary comedy of manners
promises an unmissable evening’s
entertainment.
Co-conception by
Ken Ludwig and Mike Ockrent
Inspired by Material by
Guy Bolton and John McGowan
Originally produced on Broadway by
Roger Horchow and Elizabeth Williams
Crazy for You is packed full of Gershwin
classics, including I Got Rhythm,
Embraceable You, Nice Work If You Can
Get It and Someone To Watch Over Me.
New York banker Bobby is sent to the
desert town of Deadrock, Nevada, to
foreclose on a run-down theatre behind
on its mortgage. Once there, he falls for
postmistress Polly, and together they try
to save the theatre with the help of some
cowboys, a pair of eccentric English
tourists and a bevy of Broadway
follies girls!
A glorious musical comedy –
who could ask for anything more!

RICHMOND THEATRE 110 PROJECT
This year we are inviting
local people to take part in our
110th anniversary celebrations.
We’ve recruited a team of
volunteer curators who are
mounting an exhibition about
the history of the Theatre at

will open in September 2010.
A programme of creative
workshops for schools and
families will accompany
the exhibition.
We’re also working with a
group of local young people
who are writing a new play
inspired by people’s memories
of Richmond Theatre. There will
be a performed reading of this
exciting new work at 7.30pm
on Thursday 5 August. Book
your free tickets via Box Office.
If you want to know more
about it or share your
