Who was Richard Nixon?
• Nixon was the 37th president of the United States.
• The former vice president was born in 1913 and died in 1994.
• He was a member of the House and the Senate from 1946-1953.
• Richard resigned from the presidency after the famous Watergate Scandal, before he was impeached by the Senate.
The Alger Hiss Case
• In 1948, Whittaker Chambers accused Alger Hiss, a State Department worker, of being a Communist.
• Nixon launched his political career chasing after so-called Communists such as Hiss.
• He became the chair of the HUAC after his pursuit of Communists.
• This case moved Nixon into the political and public spotlight.
The Checkers Speech
• When Nixon was running as Dwight Eisenhower’s vice president, he was accused of accepting reimbursements.
• He accepted gifts and money from his backers.
• Nixon gave the “Checkers Speech” on September 23rd, 1952.
• He claimed that he only accepted one gift, a little dog named Checkers.
• He also urged Republicans to keep him on the ballot for the election.
