1969- Vietnam War

• Nixon orders secret bombings of Cambodia to destroy N.V supply routes & base camps.

• Nixon Doctrine- the U.S. would provide arms & aid—but not military forces—to its Asian allies, who would provide their own military forces in resisting communist aggression.

• Vietnamization- the U.S. would provide S.V. w/ equipment & financial aid but withdraw American troops.

1969- Back in the U.S.

• Nixon nominates Warren Burger as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

• Apollo 11 lands on the moon

• Kent State Univ. tragedy• National Guardsmen

fire on antiwar demonstrators

• Killed four and wounded 9 students

• a grand jury indicted eight of the guardsmen, but the charges were dismissed for lack of evidence.

• Supreme Court rules that the death penalty is unconstitutional

• Nixon is re-elected to a 2nd term by one of the widest margins on record

1973

• Supreme Court rules in Roe vs. Wade that the constitutional right to privacy “is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.”

• Peace treaty ending the Vietnam War is signed in Paris

1974

• Aug. 8- In a TV broadcast, Nixon announces to the nation his resignation that would be effective the next day

• V. Pres. Gerald Ford becomes President

• Nixon wrote numerous books on his experiences in public life and on foreign policy

• April 22, 1994- Nixon dies in NYC
