The  Internet  of  Things:    Solving  real  problems  in  the  real  world  Rich  Radka,  Claro  Partners  –  01  February,  2015  –  WSA  Global  Conference,  Abu  Dhabi

Claro  delivers  business  innova9on  and  service  design  in  the  context  of  disrup9ve  shi;s:

Access      Services  enabled  through  networks      Smart  data  and  personalised  experiences      AdapIve  and    informal  enterprise      Internet  of  Things

Ownership          Services  delivered  by  companies      Big  data  and    aggregated    resources        Hierarchical  and  structured  organisaIons    Internet  of  informaIon  and  people

The  landscape  covers  a  broad  definiIon  of  the  IoT

“Internet  of  Things”

“Trying  to  determine  the  market  size  of  the  Internet  of  Things  is  like  trying  to  calculate  the  market  for  plas9cs,  circa  1940.  At  that  9me,  it  was  difficult  to  imagine  that  plas9cs  could  be  in  everything.”    -‐  Michael  Nelson  Professor  of  CommunicaIon,  Culture  &  Technology    at  Georgetown  University

The  IoT  is  an  interac9on  between  the  internet,  things…  and  data

Internet

Data

This  could  be  a  wearable  device  that  accumulates  your  fitness  stats  in  an  online  profile…

Or  a  system  that  tracks  your  herd’s  milk  producIon  over  Ime…

Or  a  complex  cloud-‐based  pla\orm  that  collects  sensor  energy  and  calculates  a  building’s  energy  efficiency…

The  IoT  is  an  interac9on  between  the  internet,  things…  and  data

In  the  future,  we  predict  that  connec9on  will  be  a  given

…and  if  everything  is  connected  by  default,  the  focus  turns  to  creaIng  services  built  on  top  of  the  connecIons:

“True  IoT  products  should  be  mulIpurpose  and  networked”    Florian  Michahelles  Auto-‐ID  labs

“The  product  enables  a  bi-‐direc9onal  conversa9on  between  manufacturer    and  consumer”    -‐  Vlad  Trifa  EVRYTHNG

“If  products  are  traceable  all  the  9me,  then  leasing  makes  more  sense  than  ownership  as  a  business  model”    -‐  Rob  van  Kranenburg  Internet  of  Things  Council

“IoT  is  not  a  technology  or  cost  issue;  it’s  a    use-‐case  issue”    Vlad  Trifa  EVRYTHNG

How  to  develop  an  Internet  of  Things  service?

There  is  a  wide  variety  of  disciplines  that  IoT  creators  have  to  manage  when  creaIng  a  concept…

Encourage physical activity: tracking, social interaction and

gamification

Smart phone app and internet service set activity goals get feedback on progress

Data centre that runs website and app (e.g. Amazon)

Bluetooth to phone Mobile data/Wifi to internet

Prototype ARM Mbed devkit Flash memory Microcontroller GPS+movement sensors LEDS+vibration

Prototype 3D printed PU TPU rubber ABS harness

Produce and ship from Foxconn

Nike stores Electronics retailers

App stores Nike+ website

Free app Rev. share from 3rd party apps

Device $149

Key  insights  for  addressing  real  opportuni9es  in  the  IOT

1.  The  “Internet  of  Things”  –  as  an  area  of  new  opportuniIes  and  potenIal  –  is  nascent  and  needs  to  be  nurtured

2.  The  IoT  is  complex  because  it  bridges  both  the  physical  and  digital  worlds

2.  The  IoT  cannot  be  built  by  one  enIty  alone  and  involves  many  players  from  varied  disciplines

4.  A  significant  part  of  the  IoT  will  evolve  in  a  fragmented  way  and  from  the  boTom-‐up

5.  The  real  value  of  the  IoT  will  not  come  from  the  technology  itself,  but  the  services  built  on  top  of  it  and  enabled  by  it
