Friday 13th your assistance isrequired at Chattisham. There’ll
be a working party meeting atabout 9:00am so bring along somegrass cutting equipment, scythes, chainsaws (must be tough oldgrass!) and try not to draw blood. Ifthe weather stays wet the car parkmight be moved over to the adjoin-ing field to give Trevor Baker a fight-ing chance of staying out of theditch…. Wildtracks near Newmarkethave donated the club a small giftvoucher and I believe names will beput into a hat for a draw to be doneat the AGM, best of luck. The access track to BromleyBrook for the Roger Birch Memorialtrial is looking a little dubious atthe moment, quite a bit of work isrequired by the land owner to makeit useable for cars with trailers sokeep an eye out for a venue changeif nothing improves.
It’s AGM time when this comesout and hopefully it’s got to you ingood time as Kevin has beenpushed for time recently filling hiscoffers at the shows. Seriouslythough there’s never enough timeto thank everybody that helps runclub activities, not just at the trialsbut also the shows and of coursethe summer tours of the country-side. There’s a lot goes on behindthe scenes ‘thank you’ for giving upyour time for club activities so thatthe other 90% can have a good dayout. Oh yes, Eady keep an eye onTed around the burger stall. He gothis words in a muddle at the lastcommittee meeting which gave usall a little chuckle about his activi-ties when helping to pack up…….
Keep yer feet up,

Keen to get into motorcycle sportas soon as possible, it was nec-
essary for me to join an affiliated(to the ACU) motorcycle club. Liv-ing in St Osyth, it was obvious toapply to the then Clacton and Dis-trict Motorcycle club which, duringthe 1950`s, not only had one or twoactive trials riders but had also runOpen-to-Centre trials in our area. Ihad waited until I had passed myriding test exactly twelve weeksafter first venturing on to HerMajesty`s highway on my BSA Ban-tam, before I joined the club – mak-ing two errors straight away. FirstlyI thought a rider had to have a fulllicence rather than a provisional toenter any competition – quitewrong, as Bill Wilkinson proved afew years later, when he won theBritish Experts trial whilst stillsporting “L” plates. Secondly, Ithought I could enter a trial rightaway. Not so again, it all dependedif the club received regulations sentto them from an organising club -and there was definitely no entrieson the day allowed. This was proba-bly just as well, because the Clac-ton motorcycle club membersproved to be a rather forbidding setof so-and-so`s to get on with! Atthe weekly club night, I was virtual-ly ignored. I would turn-up at theirHQ, which was a seedy room abovea motorcycle shop run by TrevorCooper, this was furnished with afew rickety chairs, a dart board andsome issues of the: “Motor Cycle” -
a weekly journal, very popular atthe time. Denied any cheery conver-sation, I recall sitting in the corner –whilst the other clubmen indulgedin a never ending game of darts –reading an article on a revolution-ary new design of petrol enginemade by NSU – then the largestmotorcycle manufacturer in theworld. It was called the “Wankle” After three weeks, I was near-ly at a point to give up and trysomething else, when Trevor him-self appeared. He normally liked totake a leisurely tea and watch TVafter he shut the shop. A charmingand generous man, he immediatelycame over to me, saying somethinglike:- “Hello - not seen you herebefore – welcome to the club.” Itwas all I needed and we had a con-versation where I told him I wouldlike to ride in trials. “Jolly good -”he replied, “- as soon as we get any,I`ll pass you a set of regulationsand entry form.” A few weeks after – he was asgood as his word and I duly en-tered and rode my first trial atStowmarket. I had to retire at thatevent but was more keen than ever
– and oddly enough, turning up atthe following club night after thetrial, I found I was now the centreof attention! It seemed that severalof the other members also wishedto take part in trials but were alittle nervous on how to go about itand my simple: “jumping-in” ap-proach had intrigued them. I was

asked a lot of questions and theresult was for my second event atChelmsford, I was to be part of ateam of no less than five noviceriders from Clacton. Not only that, but Trevor said I could borrow asecond-hand converted Bantamout of his shop.
“It will give you a better ride - “ heexplained “- its got the bigger BSAfront forks”..... If I had been offered a works bike,I couldn't be happier.
Sidge.
"In its day the Clacton Motorcycle club ran varied events in off-roaddisciplines, including a "Sidecars only " trial (won by Ron Wisbey) . Wecertainly did not get 182 entries! but we did get riders from all over theCentre. This outfit from Southend (badge) I do not recall the driver but it
looks like Southend Club stalwart, Geoff Blower, who is in the chair."
