President’s Message:Dear ATMA members,

Thank you for the privilege of serving as the new President of ATMA. It is my pleasant duty to thank the outgoing officers and welcome new leaders as officers. This past year has been an year of healing for ATMA, misunderstandings cleared and new bylaws drafted to make ATMA more democratic. We are now required to mail ballots to the membership for electing officers.

Membership: Please recruit your friends and colleagues and their children in medical profession. I believe that the ideals of ATMA has something for everyone to like and build upon. You can make a difference.

The next convention: It will be in Boston, MA; from Aug 23rd to 26th, 2012. Dr. Prakash Rau has accepted the responsibility of the chairman of the convention committee. Dr. N. Pandian is helping organize the CME. Please plan to attend and invite your classmates to come to Boston and make it an alumni event.

New and improved website: (www.atmaus.org), with a secure logon for members. You will see features to inform you of ATMA’s official, social, educational and charitable activities. There will be a way to express your opinion and communicate with the officers and leaders of ATMA to influence their minds. Educational exchange with Tamil Nadu: We have established excellent relationship with Dr.Mayilvahanan Natarajan, the Vice-Chancellor of Dr.MGR Medical University. The first item is the 5th Indo-American conference on the 7th and 8th of January 2012 at the University Senate hall in Chennai, as a part of the Universitiy’s Silver jubilee celebration. In addition, we hope to increase volunteer opportunities for our young students, medical student and resident elective rotations, faculty visitor exchange etc. As a way to appreciate our the training we received, let us impact healthcare delivery in Tamil Nadu. For example, help us establish an EMT training program. Dr. Balasubramaniam, a member from California has trained EMT personnel throughout India and he will spearhead ATMA’s efforts in this regard in Tamil Nadu.

Charitable activities: ATMA, for a young organization, has an impressive list of Charitable activities that it has already funded, visit our web site to see the extent and variety of support ATMA has given so far. We are only limited by availability of funds and volunteers. Fortunately our members have both of these in abundance, waiting to be unleashed

VaNakkam! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to express my gratitude for choosing us to serve ATMA. We consider this a great honor, privilege and an opportunity and assure you, we will give you and the organization our best.

“ATMA was found to enrich our cultural, social and educational values and to help the needy in USA and abroad in peaceful and/or in disaster times”. For many of you, either this mission as a whole and for others, some specific aspects of the mission may have attracted to join ATMA. Whatever the reason you had, you would have found your needs are being met, especially when you attend the ATMA meetings. To its members and their families ATMA has been a destination for charity, education, alumni gathering, networking, meeting new and old friends, recognizing the outstanding professionals for their achievements, participating in cultural activities and so on. We have made a tremendous progress year after year fulfilling the vision, mission and the goals of ATMA. To-date we have: • Donated about half a million dollars for the needy in USA

and abroad, successfully launching more than 20 healthcare projects.

• Conducted close to 80 hours of Continuing Medical Education, in USA and in India.

• Brought close to one thousand health care providers of Tamil origin together to net work, enrich and exchange cultural, social and educational values.

• Established 12 chapters all around USA and have conducted 7 National Conventions and 3 International Educational Meetings.

It is estimated that there are at least 6000 physicians of Tamil origin living in USA. This is in addition to other affiliated health care providers. If only we can unite all these physicians and affiliates under the wing of ATMA, we can achieve a lot more. I am confident under the able leadership of ATMA’s President, Dr. C.K Palani, the President-elect and the Membership Committee Chairman, Dr. Balu Mani and others including the Chapter Governors, we will reach a new height in 2012.

Finally, my request to you is, if you are not an ATMA member, please become a member today. If you are already a member, please make sure your friends become members.

The CME and cultural/spousal programs were one of the best in the recent years based on the overwhelming response we have received. The fund raising event was very successful and I want to thank the ATMA members who helped us with the donations that will directly benefit projects in the impoverished areas of Tamil Nadu. American Tamil Medical Association’s 7th annual convention was held in City of Medicine, Durham,

North Carolina on August 11th to 14th, 2011 at Sheraton Imperial hotel and convention center. It was organized, with leadership guidance of ATMA President Dr. Tamilarasi Kannan, by the Carolinas convention team.

The convention began on August 11th evening with registration, reception and welcome address by Dr. Valarmathi Sundar, followed by “தமிழ் தாய்  வாழ்த்�” by Mayuri and “�த்�   விளக்� ஏற்றல்” by Dr. Gowdhami Mohan and Mrs. Kalyani Krishnan. Children of Tamil origin entertained the audience with their Tamil talents and musical performances co-ordinated by Dr.Shobana Senthilnathan. The program was followed by delicious south Indian dinner and socialization.

Registration and Reception: The general Registration was ably done by Mr.Kannan Adimoolam and Mr. Arun Chopra. Nila, Sindhu, Rahul and their friends, Dr. Meena Chopra, Mrs. Sangeeta Venkatraman Mr. Seshadri Sadagopan helped at the registration desk.

Educational program: The CME, “Innovations in Medicine”, was organized by the CME chair Dr. Sandhya Kumar with Impressive array of speakers chosen by Dr. Tamilarasi Kannan. A total of 8 hrs of CME credit was provided for lectures from 8am to 12.30 pm on August 12th and 13th. The CME co chairs were Dr. Sasirekha Mukkamala, Dr.Radhika Sadagopan, Dr. Shankar Perumal, Dr. Meena Mohan. The CME reception/registration was coordinated by Dr. Veerappan Sundar, Dr. Sankar Kumar, Mr. Manoj Kumar, Mayuri and Supriya. The attendees were impressed with the topics and knowledge of the speakers. Our sincere thank you to Dr. Vellore Parithivel for arranging the CME through Medical Society of Queens, New York.

The ATMA business meeting and general body meeting were conducted from 2pm to 4pm on August 12th and 13th, by Dr.Tamilarasi Kannan.

Spousal programs: The spousal program was organized by Dr. Banu Krishnamurthy and Mr. Krishnamurthy. Bus trip was arranged for the spouses, children on August 12th morning to Balaji Temple and NC museum of Arts. After lunch, another bus trip was arranged for everyone to visit Duke Chapel and Duke Gardens. Dr. Ashok Venkatraman and Mrs. Sangeetha Venkatraman guided the bus tour.

On August 13th morning parenting and grand parenting session was conducted by Dr. Banu Krishnamurthy and Dr. Swaminathan for the spouses. The afternoon educational session was on healthy nutrition followed by Zumba dance

workout arranged by Dr.Chandra Kumar. All of them enjoyed the jewellery, sarees exhibit too.

Children, youth programs: Children enjoyed the bus trip on August 12th. On August 13th morning, they enjoyed arts and crafts with Mayuri. In the afternoon, they were engaged by Supriya with Origami. In the night, they were entertained by Zoe the Clown with balloon sculpturing, face painting, music and dance. Children expressed that they are looking forward to the next convention to meet the ATMA friends and to have good time.

Youths volunteered at the registration, visited the temple, college, spent time at the gold Gym and had a good time with friends.

Meals: Delicious meals, cocktails were arranged by Mr.Krishnamurthy and Mr.Kannan Adimoolam . Breakfast buffet was arranged at seasons restaurant. Lunch was at Sheraton Imperial. After the cocktail hour, dinner was served from authentic South Indian Tower restaurant.

Souvenir: A memorable souvenir was compiled by Dr.Sankar Kumar and Dr.Chandra Kumar. The souvenir was released by Dr.Baskaran.

Awards: Lifetime achievement award recipient was Dr.Balasubramaniam for establishing EMS system in India with US curriculum, presented by Dr.Jaya Gopal, the first and past president of ATMA. The Young Investigator award recipient was Dr.Raja Gopaldas, presented by the ATMA past President Dr.Nedunchezian Sithian. The Public service award recipient was Dr.Muruganathan, presented by the past ATMA governor and great supporter of ATMA, Dr.Geetha Pandian. The Best residents were Dr.Kalapana Manthiram, awarded by the past president Dr.Athi Narayan and Dr.Kumar Ilangovan by the past president Dr.Subbiah.

Thank you to Dr.Arivoli Veerappan for being in the award nomination committee.

Evening programs: General evening program was coordinated by Dr.Veerappan Sundar and the entertainment program was coordinated by Dr.Shobana Senthilnathan and Dr.Sankar Kumar.

On August 11th, the program was presided by Dr.Meena Mohan.

On August 12th, Dr.Radhika Sadagopan presided the program. The welcome address was given by ATMA president Dr.Tamilarasi Kannan, followed by souvenir release, entertainment, award ceremony. The program was followed by dinner.

August 13th , welcome address by the Dr. Tamilarasi Kannan followed by Keynote speaker introduction and address. The keynote speaker was Dr. Mayilvahanan Natarajan, Vice chancellor of MGR University, Tamilnadu. He addressed changing medical curriculum in India according to global standard. Key note address was followed by award ceremony, chairman address by Dr. Arumugam. The ATMA president Dr. Tamilarasi Kannan introduced the 2012 ATMA president, Dr. Palani. Dr.Palani gave the new president message and announced the city Boston, Massachusetts for 2012, 8th annual convention. It was followed by light music by Dheem Tha Na Na troupe and Gala dinner from South Indian restaurant. The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Valarmathi Sundar. The night was concluded with Dance and Music.

Big screen projector and audiovisual arrangements were coordinated by Mr. Kannan Adimoolam.

Charity / Fund raising: It was coordinated by Dr. Veerappan Sundar, Mr. Kannan Adimoolam and Dr. Ashok Venkatraman. Project presentation was done by Dr. Ashok Venkatraman. The fund raising was supported by Mr. Kannan Ramaswamy and his music troupe. $20,000 was raised to support different projects supported by ATMA. The purpose of the convention was fulfilled by generous donors and attendees. In addition to the $20,000 charity funds raised, the convention itself generated about $36,000 in profits that will benefit ATMA and its projects.

The attendees expressed that the convention was very educational, entertaining with good social and cultural programs.

The mission of the Antenatal Care Team (ACT) project is to promote the health of pregnant women and to reduce

morbidity and mortality of pregnant mothers at Kasturba Hospital in Gandhigram, Dindigul through educational seminars. We were thrilled to kick start the project on January of 2011. We have secured space and equipment for conducting educational seminars. Classes are conducted every month for pregnant mothers who sign up for these classes. Pregnant mothers in various stages of their pregnancy have signed up. They have been excited to bring their spouses along to these classes. An average of twenty pregnant mothers per month along with their spouses has attended the antenatal educational classes since January of 2011. We distribute reader friendly educational materials at these seminars on topics like diabetes in pregnancy, hypertension in pregnancy, anemia in pregnancy etc.

We have also started showing a video of a normal delivery to the attendees. The classes are conducted by experienced personnel

such as nursing staff, dieticians, physician staff and health educators. Our assistant medical superintendent, Dr. Manonmanie is always available to answer questions during these sessions. 100% of the pregnant mothers who attended these classes have had a delivery with no complications and the mother and the baby are well. Through the ACT project, we are happy to say that we are achieving the mission of promoting the health of the mother and the baby.

On behalf of the Kasturba Hospital, I would like to thank ATMA members for supporting this project and we hope for your continuing support. If you would like

to volunteer at the Kasturba Hospital, please apply through the Volunteer ATMA Program (VAP).

This summer, I had the pleasure of doing a research project on childhood immunizations with the Pallavaram

Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) in Chennai. As part of the project, we did door-to-door surveys on childhood immunization coverage and in-depth interviews with parents on their thoughts about immunizations. Vasanth Kuppuswamy, a college student at Vanderbilt University, helped tremendously with data collection. We were truly touched by the warmth of the people we interviewed. Everyday, complete strangers welcomed us into their homes and offered a true testament to Tamil hospitality.

We are in the process of analyzing the data to determine the coverage of the compulsory and privately-available vaccines and to measure how uptake of these vaccines is related to socio-demographic factors. Overall, parents in India are very supportive of vaccines and feel that immunizing their children is critical to giving them a healthy future.

PCMC : ATMA’s largest charitable project in dollar terms is complete. They are treating poor patients in the under served area.

Sri Ram Foundation will be taking over the responsibility of running the hospital and will be expanding their services to include adults in the area.

On behalf of the ATMA Convention Committee, I would like to invite all of the ATMA members and their families to the 8th Annual ATMA Convention to be held in Boston, MA from August 23rd to August 26th 2012.

The proposed itinerary calls for a check in on Thursday, August 23rd with an informal dinner and light entertainment. On Friday, August 24th we will have an arranged CME for the morning session and a Boston Harbor Cruise in the evening. On Saturday, August 25th we will have another CME in the morning and the Banquet with entertainment will be in the evening. During the afternoon of August 25th we are planning some options of tours of Boston, a Whale Watch and College tours. Checkout will be on Sunday, August 26th.

I hope that all of you attend with your family and help to make this convention a grand success.

I had the privilege of attending the EIGHTH ANNUAL MEETING OF ATMA at Durham, NC

recently. The meeting was very well structured and run flawlessly. This meeting was my second one to attend, after last year’s meeting at Chicago. My wonderful friend Dr. Xavier Roche dragged me to play an active role in the Pattimanram. I didn’t want to fail him. I was more engrossed in my assigned DUTY. I couldn’t relax and enjoy the festivities and the gatherings. This time as I was just a participant, I had time to relax and immerse myself back and forth from my medical school days to the present day, in the midst of my comrades of same CALLING.

When I was given the license to practice Medicine, I realized the immense sense and wisdom in these two KURALS. I knew that these two short verses will be guiding me through out my life as a physician. The words “வாய்ப்பச்  ெசயல்”  மற்�ம்  “க�திச்  ெசயல்” are thought provoking and extremely meaningful. These two thoughtful acts on the part of the caregiver distinguishes between an ordinary one from a special one. The first Kural deals with the importance of understanding the inflicting disease at hand in its entirety and the subsequent Kural underscores the utmost need for comprehending the Host, the patient, in all dimensions to do real justice. Mastery of the SCIENCE of Medicine is one aspect to become a good doctor. but, However, investing the time and energy to capture the full dimension of the ill brother or sister is far more important to deliver the REAL care. To be effective, the healer must reach and touch the hurting soul with an ailing body with HONESTY and HUMILITY, CONSIDERATION and COMPASSION. This aspect of Medicine is a Fine ART. Unlike the science of

medicine, the art of medicine can only be taught by real DEEDS of a living GURU / dedicated teacher. The teaching of this art is dying every where but in a faster pace in our mother land.

The thirst for money, materials, awards and rewards can be easily quenched by business of all different kinds but should not be the practice of medicine.

During the three days, I had spend at the convention, I witnessed the evolution of fellow ATMA members as a caring, giving compassionate physicians as I have.I saw the future safe and bright in the form of Drs. Thamilarasi Kannan, Valarmathi Sundar, Veerappan

Sundar and other fine people who care about the cause beyond themselves. The real liberty, I believe, is reflected in our servitude to the cause of freeing our kith and kins from illnesses of all kind and poverty of all types. We, the physicians, are better suited to accomplish that noble ideal better than our close competitors- Teachers and Preachers. Our future looks brighter with socially conscious and responsible youngsters like Dr. Raja R. Gopaldas, Dr. Kumar Ilangovan and other young men and women in our midst.

ATMA must make honest attempt to instill the value and the importance of showing respect and concern for all lives both here and our homeland. That is the best service we can render. It does not cost a lot and far more reaching.

Thanks to ATMA for rekindling my interest and make me to look at myself critically.
