Theres been a murder!
A young lady has been found dead in a countrycottage.
T
he prime suspect is a young man that reportedthe death. He seems strangely calm forsomeone that was found next to a dead body.
So far he has given a rambling account ofevents, perhaps you can persuade him to write
something down Once he has written down a statement, perhaps
you would like to make a sketch of the RhymeScene.

This is what his statement looks
likePorphyria's Lover
Read through this document carefully paying
attention to any visual items you can include in
your sketch of the Rhyme Scene.
Be quick, you have ten minutes to read it and to
draw the sketch, we dont want the Day Shift tohave to take over this job. Warrick Brown will
help you

We need a description of the scene
of the murder
Point Evidence Explain why
this might be
important
Where didthe crime
take place?
What was the
weather like?
How did the
young lady
change the
atmosphere in
the cottage?

Nice to meet you. Ive found out
about this girls background
Her name is Porphyria, thats an
Upper Class name if ever I heard
one
Apparently she is also married, but not to the
guy whose bed she was found in
Her marriage was not a happy one as she didnt
really love the husband.
Does this match up with the suspects statement?

Find the evidence to back these
revelations
Point Evidence Explain why
this might be
important
What doesthe suspect
call her?
Does she
love the
suspect?
Is she
already
married?

All this seems pretty strange
Why is this Upper Class, married
young lady in a rundown,
remote cottage with a manbeneath her social status?
Surely if she loved the suspect, why didntshe marry him?
What does this say about the attitudestowards marriage and relationships at thetime?

Good digging! Now Dr Robbins,
the Coroner has performed an autopsy
Welcome aboard! An interesting one this...
Cause of Death (COD) is asphyxia by
strangulation. No obvious weapon was used or
found at the scene, the neck bruising was not
caused by hands.
No signs of a struggle put up by our vic.
Her body appears to have been moved after her
death.
Perhaps you can help?
-
8/7/2019 Rhyme Scene Investigation Pwrpt
14/23
Tell Dr Robbins what he needs to
know
Point Evidence Explain why
this might be
important
How wasPorphyria
killed?
How do we
know she
didntstruggle?
Was the body
moved after
she was
murdered?
?

This guy gets stranger by the
minute I wanna push for an arrest but we
have to prove this guy did it with a sound
mind, or else he gets off on grounds ofdiminished responsibility.
Prove to me he thought he was doing the
right thing by God.
Prove to me just how long he sat there
with this body for

Prove to Brass the lovers guilt
Point Evidence Explain why
this is
important
Did he thinkabout killing
her before he
acted?
How long has
he stayed withher corpse?
Does he think
God will
punish him?

Enough already Im convinced!
Grissom, would you like the
honour of recapping?
The murder took place in a remote cottage during
a terrible storm. Weather and surroundings are
important because if they are bad/gloomy, we can
tell something bad will happen.
The young lady did her best to keep her loverhappy, she made the cottage warm for him and
undressed herself for him, even when he didnt
seem interested.
She told him she loved him, even though she was
already married and couldnt leave her husband.

She couldnt leave her husband
because she had married for social statusrather than love. In the 18th Century
marriage was often decided this way, and
women had little choice in the matter. She couldnt get divorced either as it was
virtually unheard of and would have no-
one to support her (remember the loverwas poorer than she was).
The lover knew this and was upset.

He suddenly realised she loved him and
did not want that moment to end. He decided to kill her to preserve that moment
at which she truly loved him.
He convinced himself that she felt no pain asshe did not struggle.
He then interfered with her body, opening her
eyelids, kissing her on the cheek and propping
her body up so that she looked normal He obviously wanted to have complete control
of her. He almost used her like a puppet.
-

He convinced himself that this was a
release for her and that she no longerhad anything to worry about.
He thought she would be happy as itmeant they could be together.
He sat there with her all night (perhapsthey had never been able to spend awhole night together).
He believed that God had not struck himdown (thou shalt not kill) because heobviously did the right thing wherePorphyria was concerned.
