Dear Rho Sisters,

I hope you and your families had a blessed

holiday season, and have started 2018 with

renewed energy and purpose. I also hope

that you are staying warm during the near-

arctic weather conditions we are experienc-

ing!

Your executive committee met on January 9,

and will report to you at the February meet-

ing.

I also want to encourage you to submit

names of prospects for new membership in

Rho Chapter. Please get those names to

Membership Chair Amy Stills asap. The

more sisters we have, the stronger we

are!

I look forward to our February 3rd

meeting. We will celebrate our found-

ers with a presentation by the Re-

search Committee. Certificates of

Years of Service will also be given.

Our project is World Fellowship and

Schools for Africa, so bring your do-

Ladies, I am so happy to share the following from Peggy Himburg: Here’s a little praise report from me! I went back to the doctor yesterday and my “old” bones are healing nicely. No longer have to wear the shoulder brace and can leave the boot off an hour more each day until I am no longer wearing it. So thankful that I do not have to carry either of these two items to bed with me anymore!! I will still be unable to drive for several more weeks, but I am on the mend. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this time and keep them coming! Peggy

THE DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL

Rho Chapter Minutes -- December 2, 2017

Rho Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met December 2, 2017, at the Scottsboro Rec*Com with

thirty-seven members and three guests present.

President Kathy Potter called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. Potter recognized Elizabeth Mann, represent-

ing Turning Point Pregnancy Center, and presented her with newborn diapers donated by members. Mann thanked the

chapter for its support.

Members read the Collect before brunch.

Peggy Courtney led Christmas carols, accompanied by guest pianist Jane Doss and chapter members Judy Prickett and

Carolyn Deerman. Courtney also sang a solo, “Breath of Heaven.”

Susan Stockman’s inspiration for renewal was “Letter to a Teacher,” written by Abraham Lincoln to his son’s teacher.

Exemplifying the program title, “Celebrating Life,” guest speaker Jerica Frazier (daughter of member Amy Frazier) narrat-

ed her journey of surviving, adapting, and healing after an automobile accident while on her way to take a final exam at

Northeast Alabama Community College.

Following roll call, a quorum was announced. Minutes of the November 2017 meeting, previously published in the news-

letter, were approved as written.

The November treasurer’s report (previously published in the newsletter and copies available on tables) was approved.

In the absence of Joyce Coffey, Elaine Brookshire read a thank-you note from Patricia Smith. Potter read an email she had

received from Alicia Bell.

Committee chairs reported as follows:

•Membership and Initiation – Amy Stills announced that nomination forms are available.

•Standing Rules –Becky Bridges presented and reviewed revised proposed amendments to Standing Rules regarding

membership and nominations procedures (revised copy attached). Voting on proposed amendments was postponed till

the February meeting.

•Educational Excellence: Grant-in-Aid – In the absence of Peggy Himburg, Lisa Barfoot and Carolyn Deerman re-

ported that the grant-in-aid recipient is Tessa Hutson, an elementary education major at Jacksonville State University.

•Scholarships and World Fellowship -- Cynthia Patridge requested that members bring World Fellowship donations

to the meeting on February 3, 2018.

•Social Committee – Carolyn Deerman will contact February hostesses for planning.

•Caring Hearts – Carolyn Deerman read names of members having birthdays in December and January. Peggy Court-

ney led “Happy Birthday,” accompanied by Jo Hall.

•Announcements -- Donna Butler, chapter member and president of Beta State, thanked members for donations to the

American Cancer Society, the state project for 2017-2019.

•Member News/Remembrances -- Members mentioned included Peggy Himburg, Katie Brogdon, Beth McNutt, Kay

Durham, Edith Hambrick, Joyce Coffey, Jo Smith, Rita Barkley, and Sylvia Coleman.

Members sang The Delta Kappa Gamma Song before adjournment at 11:00 a.m.

Frances Coleman

In the last few years, an emphasis has been placed on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineer-ing, and Mathematics) and the role these fields play in a competitive global marketplace. As a 9th-12th grade teacher of biology, physics, and engineering, Rho Chapter member Frances Coleman serves as a role model for students, especial-ly female students.

Although Frances knew she wanted to be a teacher at the age of 22 years old, her journey to become a class-room teacher took a while. Frances became a classroom teacher nine years ago. Her prior work experi-ence includes working at the Ala-bama Eye and Tissue Bank, work-ing as a receptionist and insurance biller, and working as a horseback rider instructor. Frances and her husband Dr. Hardin Coleman have been married for 25 years. They have two children: Kate, a 19-year-old student at Au-burn University, and Will, a 17-year-old junior at Scottsboro High School. They also have one dog and two cats.

Mary DeBow Rich 1891-1960

Mary DeBow Rich was born in Islandton,

South Carolina, to Georgianna and John

Rich, M.D. She enjoyed an affluent child-

hood on the family’s 550 acre farm until

her father’s death. She was 12 years old at

that time. Mary was tutored at home and

in private schools, receiving only two

years of public secondary education. And

after high school graduation in 1906, she

entered Winthrop Normal and Industrial

College and received a B.A. degree in

1910.

Her teaching career began at Williston

High School. A few years later, she was

the first woman in South Carolina to be

named a high school superintendent

(same as our principal). After seven years

in the South Carolina’s school system, she

enrolled at Columbia Teachers College.

After Columbia she went on to teach

Spanish and Latin in Clearwater, Florida.

There she discovered that there were two

salary schedules: one for Southern and

one for Northern teachers. She com-

plained and was offered a 50% pay raise

for the following year. But instead, she

returned to Winthrop Training School to

become supervisor of the English depart-

ment.

Church of Christ in Montgomery! Our own Southeastern Regional Director, Linda Navorska from South Carolina, will lead us

in a day of interactive sessions where we will discover that “It’s not such a big deal to lead!” You don’t have to be a chapter of-

ficer or committee chairman (either outgoing or incoming) in order to attend. By virtue of your being a member of DKG, you

are already a leader! These sessions will apply not just to leadership in DKG, but also to leadership in your community, church,

school, and any other organizations to which you might belong. The cost is $25 and includes lunch and all materials. Active

teachers will be able to receive professional development for this day. Registration is from 9-9:30 A.M., and the day will end at

2:30 P.M. As an added incentive, Beta State will be giving away one free registration for the International Convention in Austin,

July 16-20, and you must be present to win! So send in your registration form (that’s attached in this newsletter) along with

your check to our own Marion Hodges, Beta State Recording Secretary, by February 14. And come join your Beta State sisters

for a day of fun, fellowship, food, and discovery! Hope to see you there!

Since Mary wanted more education, she

left Winthrop and went to Peabody Col-

lege and Vanderbilt to get her M.A. This

master’s degree prepared her to accept

the position of head of the English de-

partment at Troy State Teachers College.

There she stayed for 17 years until her

retirement in 1938.

Mary served Beta State from 1934 until

1937 as second vice-president and first

vice-president. In less than four years

following the organization of Beta State,

Mary was instrumental in forming Eta

State Chapter in Pike County and became

its first president.

While at Troy, she continued her educa-

tion with graduate studies at Duke, the

University of North Carolina and the

University of South Carolina. But when

her sister died, she felt compelled to quit

her studies, even though she was almost

at the end of receiving her doctorate de-

gree. She returned home to the family

farm to help her bachelor brother with

the management of the farm and timber

land. Mary left the profession and never

re-entered it. She stayed active in Delta

Kappa Gamma. Her homecoming coin-

cided with the organization of Alpha Eta

State. She was charter member of Beta

Chapter and a president of Zeta Chapter.

At the age of 69, Mary wanted

to return to her studies again

because in 1959 her brother

died unexpectedly of cardiac

arrest. In order to deal with

her grief, she enrolled at Flor-

ida’s Stetson University for

the fall term of 1960. Howev-

er, she never entered that fall

term because she died sud-

denly of a fatal heart attack in

April of that year.

It was her wish for her body

to return to nature. She is

buried in the lonely, country,

private Varn family cemetery

in Islandton, surrounded only

by trees, other wild growth,

and silence. The Beta State

footstone noting Mary as a

state founder was put in place

during a graveside memorial

service on September 13,

2005.

Our project for the December 2, 2017 meet-ing was collecting newborn diapers for Turning Point Pregnancy Center. Board Member Elizabeth Mann joined us for brunch and accepted your donations. TPPC Director Rebecca Wells sent her gratitude for your generosity.

If you were fortunate enough to hear “Jerica’s Journey” by our December speaker Jerica Frazier, I know you were greatly blessed! What a moving story and an amaz-ing young woman! Jerica also happens to be the beauti-ful daughter of Rho Chapter’s own Amy Frazier. A huge thanks to Amy and Jerica for sharing with us!

February Meeting Project Details The February Meeting Project is in support of the DKG International Projects World Fellowship and

Schools for Africa. Please bring your checks to the meeting or mail to Treasurer Deborah Jones. Checks

should be made out to DKG Rho Chapter. Please write how much of your donation you wish to go to World

Fellowship, and/or how much you wish to go to Schools for Africa. Thank you in advance for your generous

donations!

World Fellowship Impact Since the inception of this program in 1946, DKG has awarded scholarships to 963 women from more than 122 countries. Overall contributions through June of 2017 equaled $3,521,100. During the 2016-2017 fiscal year, mem-bers contributed $78,463.66. For these visitors from far-away lands, arriving in the United States or Canada to study means much more than a college transfer. It means having the courage to travel thousands of miles alone, perhaps to a place that they have never visited before, to adjust to new customs, cuisine, culture, and standards of behavior. In many cases, the ad-justment includes acquisition of a foreign language that must be exercised in everyday life, as well as in the most demanding academic situations. *from www.dkg.org

Schools for Africa Schools for Africa became the Society's first official international project in 2010. Currently the project works with 13 countries in sub-Saharan Africa including Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ni-ger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau. The SFA mission involves provid-ing access to quality basic education for children, focusing on girls, orphans and other vulnerable youngsters.

The following proposed changes with edits for clarification were presented to Rho Chapter on December 2, 2017, in the form of a motion from the committee.

Vote on the proposed changes to Standing Rules for Rho Chapter will occur at the meeting scheduled for February 3, 2018

Rho Chapter shall implement the Recruitment Plan as suggested by DKG International.

Active members shall have the opportunity to identify prospective members by completing a Prospect Card at the October, November, and December meetings.

The chairman of the Membership Committee shall present the names and biographies of prospective members at the Febru-ary meeting.

Vote to approve prospective members shall occur at the March meeting.

Vote shall be by show of hands with a 2/3rds vote of acceptance necessary for approval.

All prospective members approved at the March meeting shall be invited by the membership chairman to attend an orienta-tion event prior to the April meeting.

Orientation shall be conducted by the president, second vice-president, and members of the Membership Committee .

Following orientation, each prospective member shall be given a member application form. Completion of form and pay-ment of dues indicates intention to accept membership into Delta Kappa Gamma.

All prospective members who have completed the membership form and made a verbal commitment to pay dues in full shall be invited to attend the April meeting.

During the October meeting, all prospective members who accept membership and pay their dues shall participate in the Delta Kappa Gamma initiation ceremony planned and conducted by the Membership Committee and chapter officers.
