Dear Editors,

Over the years, I have heardreferences to Oliver Cromwelland Rhiwbina. There is an excellent butcomplicated examination of itin Edgar Chappell’s book onOld Whitchurch. In summary, he highlights thelinks of the area to the manknown as the Lord Protector. There was once a largebuilding near the oldFarmhouse near LlanishenFach Primary School. The area was part of alandholding given to a familycalled Williams, passed downfrom a forebearer called Ievanap Morgan. Ievan’s family hadpreviously lived at theLlanishen Fach homestead.Ievan was a renowned archer, who served as a retainer forJasper, Duke of Bedford andLord of Glamorgan. It is almostcertain that when Henry Tudorraised his army, that Ievan andpossibly his sons followedJasper to Bosworth, whereHenry gained the Throne fromRichard III.His two sons were Morganand John. Morgan wasgranted lands in the Putneyarea and he establishedhimself as a brewer supplyingthe Royal Court. A neighbourwas Walter Cromwell who hadtwo children, Kathryn andThomas. Kathryn marriedMorgan’s son Richard and herbrother Thomas entered first

the service of Cardinal Wolseyand at the Cardinal’s death, the service of King John. What is certain is that thefamily retained the Llanishenestate for it was here thatRichard, son of Morgan andKathryn was born.Richard, like his brother-in-law Thomas Cromwell, entered the service of HenryVIII. But unlike Thomas, whoreached exalted rank only tolose his head in 1540, Richardprospered and was persuadedby the King to change hisname to Cromwell some timebefore 1536. In the King’sservice, he became Member ofParliament for Huntingdon andit was here that his son SirHenry Cromwell was born.Henry had two sons and it washis second son Robert, whowas the father of OliverCromwell.Hence it is likely that theplaygrounds of Llanishen FachSchool are on the fields whereRichard Cromwell, great-grandfather of Oliver, onceplayed as a child. There are legal documentsregarding the purchase of landin Rumney by a certainRichard Williams (aliasRichard Cromwell) and theCromwell Coat of Arms (whichwas also the Williams Coat of

Arms) was identical to theCoat of Arms of the Lewis ofVan family, of New HouseGreenmeadow, Rhiwbina. TheLewis family regarded theWilliams as a junior branch ofthe family. I acknowledge that myinformation is attributed toEdgar Chappell’s book, whichwas originally published in1945.Gareth NealeHeol-y-DeriRhiwbina

Biography

It’s hard to think of whatconnects Star Wars, BobDylan and James Cameron

to North Cardiff. But all of these have featuredin the life of Llanishen-bornfilm director RichardMarquand.Born in 1938 to HilaryMarquand MP, and motherRachel, Richard was educatedat King’s College, Cambridge(where he studied ModernLanguages) and atL’Universite d'Aix-Marseille,France. He started his careerin show-business as anewscaster in Hong Kong. But it was at the BBC whereRichard began learning hisfilm-making craft. Inpartnership with producerJames Cameron, he worked

on the 1971 series Search forthe Nile. The show, filmed onlocation, followed the highsand lows of explorers lookingfor sources of the Nile.Starring Kenneth Haigh andnarrated by James Mason, theseries was a critical success, earning it a Golden Globenomination.Richard turned his honeddocumentary techniques tothe dramatised 1979 TV movieThe Birth of the Beatles. Thefilm followed the early days ofthe Fab Four and starred NigelHavers and John Altman, whowent on to play ‘Nasty’ NickCotton in Eastenders. The Eye of the Needlefollowed in 1981 starringDonald Sutherland. Richard’sdirecting prowess did not go

unnoticed. Richard had caughtthe eye of George Lucas, whohad achieved acclaim with thistwo Star Wars movies.George Lucas decided thathe wanted Richard to directthe third installment of the StarWars trilogy. He explainedlater that Richard:“...had done some greatsuspense films and was reallygood with actors. Eye of theNeedle was the film I'd seenthat he had done thatimpressed me the most; it wasreally nicely done and had alot of energy and suspense.”Lucas had consideredSteven Spielberg and DavidLynch but in taking up thepost, Richard became the onlynon-American to direct a StarWars film.

Biography

Rumour circulated at the timethat Richard and GeorgeLucas didn’t get on too wellduring filming. This wasdenied by George Lucasduring his commentary for thefilm’s DVD release. It was also backed up byRichard’s son, James, whowas on set as a teenager. Hetestifies first hand that Richardwas brought to do Star Warsprecisely because he wasgood with actors, saying that: “You could always askHarrison Ford, with whomRichard had worked before.”Richard once said: "I'm veryinterested in directing actors -many directors directcameras." Originally, George Lucas wasdisapproving of Richard'schoice in casting IanMcDiarmid as The Emperor. The choice eventually grew onLucas, as he eventually wenton to cast McDiarmid as theyounger version of the samecharacter in the next threeepisodes of the Saga. In an interview during filmingRichard expressed hisfondness for Chewbacca:"He's very laid back, and henever completely knowswhat's going on around him.He isn't a heroic character, buthe gets himself in thesesituations where he's got tocome through."Return of the Jedi was shotand completed in less than ayear, unlike all the other StarWars films but went on tobecome the biggest grossingfilm of 1983. It took more than$250 million from a $32 millionbudget in 1983, and thenanother $40 million in its 1997re-release. The film was ahuge success for the

Cardiff-born director. Richard’s next film was UntilSeptember, which wasreleased in 1984. JaggedEdge, released in 1985,starred Jeff Bridges and GlennClose. The film was written byJoe Eszterhas, who later wenton to pen Basic Instinct (usingthe very same typewriter towrite the scripts). Jagged Edge was a box office hit.Richard even cheekily had aReturn of the Jedi poster putup on a child’s bedroom setand this can be seen in thefilm. Robert Loggia receivedan Academy Awardnomination as Best SupportingActor for his role in the film.Richard teamed up onceagain with Joe Eszterhas in1987, in his next film Hearts ofFire. The film featured BobDylan as an errant rock starand was filmed partly onlocation in Southerndown andConey Beach at Porthcawl. The film was received poorlybut Richard was never to seethe film released. Shortly aftercompleting the film, and at theage of 49, Richard suffered astroke and sadly passed away.Son James attended thepremier of the film in Richard’sstead.Richard’s legacy continues tothis day however. James isnow a film director in his ownright, and has released several films of his own.

Like his father, he has alsoimpressed George Lucas.James’s directorial debutDead Man’s Cards, was sucha hit with the Star Warssupremo, that he has askedJames to direct the live-actiontelevision series of thefranchise, which is due todebut in 2011.George Lucas told Timemagazine:"It's kind of like Episode IV(Return of the Jedi) - it's funnyand there's action, but it's a lotmore talky. It's more of what Iwould call a soap opera with abunch of personal dramas init."It seems that the Marquandname will continue to have itsinfluence on the Star Warsphenomenon for some time tocome yet.

Windowsill BirdFeeders

Inviting the birds to eat lunchon a sunny windowsill is greatfun because you'll be surprisedwho may come to visit. This nature project can be assimple as setting out mixedbird seed, or selected seedsand other foods to enticecertain breeds of birds. The window chosen for thispurpose should be on a quietand sheltered side of thehouse if possible. Nearby treesand shrubbery will attract morebirds. Branches of thornapples, alders and evergreenscan be fastened firmly to thewindow frames to dress thelunch counter on the outside, while house plants or a curtainshould be placed on the insideas a screen. The kind of food placed onyour sill determines the kind ofbirds that will be found visiting.Seed-eating birds are readilyattracted by the use of small

grains such as oats and wheat. For those in the city whowould need to buy seeds, it willbe just as well to get hemp, millet, canary seed andsunflower seed, together withthe small grains and crackedcorn for foods. Bread crusts orcrumbs, crackers anddoughnuts may be placed outwith the knowledge that thebirds will eat them. Suet, scraps of meat and variousvegetable scraps, such ascelery, lettuce, apples, raisins, and berries are also popular. All birds require water andfrequently suffer when this maynot be available in the summermonths. If it is possible, placea small bowl of water out forthem to drink from. There is a large selection ofopen-sided bird feeders thatare ready-made and on salefrom garden centres, hardwarestores or online. Some of theseare ideal for perching on top ofa window sill, offering roofprotection from summer rainwhile still allowing a good viewof the birds through the opensides. You could then start keepinga bird diary of all your visitors. If you have a camera, you caneven add photos to the diary tokeep track of all your summervisitors.

Make a Cutlery

Windchime

For younger readers, you canmake a windchime from plasticcutlery and a paper plate. First, cut lengths of string measuringbetween 4 and 6 inches. Thentie the string to the ends of thecutlery, which should haveholes made by a responsibleadult.Next poke some holes intothe paper plate, thread thestring through and tie a knot ineach piece. Finally, fasten three pieces ofstring to the top of the plate. You can decorate the paperplate with crayons, paint, markers or paper.Older readers could usemetal cutlery, the holes beingdrilled beforehand by aresponsible adult.

Reading some backcopies of RhiwbinaLiving has brought back

many happy memories of mychildhood in Rhiwbina. My parents moved fromRoath to Rhiwbina in 1941 toescape from the bombingduring the early years of thewar. We lived alongside therailway line and I used to waveto the drivers of the steamtrains as they passed by. Istarted school in RhiwbinaInfants, and a schoolphotograph of my class in1942, has 23 pupils. I think myschool teacher was Miss Dyer.

When the school canteen wasopened in 1944, my motherwas appointed as the cook, and worked there for a numberof years. Mr T Pugsley, theHeadmaster was a familyfriend and he was also a guestat my wedding. In June 1949, the firstCarnival in the village was heldand my friend was chosen asthe Carnival Queen. I was herChief Attendant. We had beenselected for this by ladies ofthe Fete Committee at theWendy Hut.I loved the shops - there wasTanner’s Dairy, Rayboulds the

Butcher and Jane’s Pantry. The Post Office was run by Mrand Mrs David, who also soldtea from a large tea chest.Looking back it was a veryhappy time.Sylvia Edwards, Wenvoe.

History

Rhiwbina’s famousGarden Villagehighlights many of

ideas developed by RaymondUnwin, one of the leadingarchitects of the Garden CityMovement. The Garden City Movementwas an approach to urbanplanning that was intended tobe planned, self-contained,communities surrounded bygreenbelts, containing carefullybalanced areas of residences, industry and agriculture.Development began inJanuary 1912, when a smallsociety was set up to ‘promoteexperimental suburbs’.Leading the way wasProfessor Stanley Jevons,Professor of Economics at

University College, Cardiff whohailed from Llanishen. Thesociety scouted Cardiff for asuitable site, before settling forwhat was known as thePentwyn Estate in the north ofthe city. Although the aim ofthe society was to create alarge suburb, the society erredon the side of caution andbought a 10-acre site atRhiwbina Halt.Construction work started on34 houses (Nos. 1-22 Y Groes,2-20 Lôn Isa and Nos. 20-22Lôn-y-Dail) on a rainy day in1913. A grand openingceremony was held outside 6and 7 Y Groes, where the Earlof Plymouth, Prof. Jevons andRaymond Unwin addressedthe crowds.

The Great War of 1914 threwthe entire project intouncertainty, and indeed inAugust 1914, the Societyheard the crushing news thatthe Housing Reform Company, which was overseeing GardenVillage projects over the UK,had gone into liquidation. Itseemed as if the end was nigh.

HistoryIn November 1914, Prof.Jevons set off to take up apost at Allahabad, India. Hehad done all he could to makethe development a success, but in his farewell address tothe Society, he spoke of ‘thegreat sacrifices he had madein pursuit of his objectives’. It isclear that Prof. Jevons lost alot of his own money in theproject. The Society struggled on,and in 1915, theirperseverance was rewardedwhen the Welsh TownPlanning and Housing Trustvery kindly took over all theSociety’s debts totalling£22,000, and also providedcapital that would allow theconstruction of more houseswhen the war was over.Demand for housing in the1920s was on the increase, and the Society gaveprecedence to married childrenof members of the Society. In 1931, a great storm rolledin, causing the brook to burstits banks and flooding fourteenhouses. Despite the addedburden of the GreatDepression, the Society setabout doing all that they could

to ease things for the villagers.Rents came down and theyeven took advantage of theempty properties to redecoratethem and use them formarketing more houses. In 1939, war broke out again.Housing developments wereagain put on hold, and theWendy Hut, which had beenused as a meeting place forthe Society, was now used asan Air Raid Warden’s post.Evacuees moved into thevillage which was deemedcomparatively safe, althoughother parts of Rhiwbina werehit by bombs and severalhouses were flattened. TheGarden Village remainedunscathed though. After the war, the Society wasforced to sell a number ofproperties as their financeshad taken a hammering. Butby 1968, their situation was sofavourable, that a SpecialGeneral Meeting was called, where tenants were told thatthey were to be offered theleasehold on their own homeson favourable terms. Thecrowd at first were stunned, but then broke into rapturousapplause. The Society wound up in1976, when they announcedthat they could no longer lookafter the finances. All financialassets were given to localcharities. In February 1977, Cardiff CityCouncil designated RhiwbinaGarden Village as aConservation Area under the1974 Town and CountryAmenities Act. The Councilwrote that:“The area is of historicinterest as a unique exampleof early 20th century village planning. The design

embodies principles ofpedestrian and vehicularseparation not widely useduntil decades later. It wasoriginally an estate of workers’housing built in a semi-ruralidiom, and was begun in 1913.Of special interest is thearchitectural style usedthroughout the Village, whichutilises distinctive forms and alimited range of simplematerials. Trees, hedges andgreens were an integral part ofthe original design, andenhance the semi-ruralcharacter of the area.”This meant that inhabitantswithin the area came undermany regulations. Anydemolition required planningconsent; the Council couldenforce works necessary tomaintain the area’s character;and in addition, even the mostimportant trees and hedgeswere covered by the TreePreservation Order.Permission had to be obtainedbefore any felling or pruningcould be carried out. TheCouncil even provided leafletson how to maintain thecharacter of the building.

Should Baby Come First? My partner and I are thinking of starting a family. Wecurrently have a two year old male spaniel, but we areconcerned that the energetic nature of the dog wouldcause problems. We aren’t cruel enough to get rid ofthe dog, but neither are we sure that he can live withus and a baby.

I think you are right to ask this question, but I believe yourworries are misplaced. Certainly a two-year old spaniel isa very energetic dog, and no doubt takes up a great dealof your time and attention at present. But spaniels makegreat family dogs and generally adapt well to changingcircumstances. When baby arrives, you will be very busy, but I am sureyou will be able to find enough time to give the dog adecent walk every day. It’s important to get him used tothe new regime before baby comes, so he doesn’t ‘blame’baby for the changes. So plan beforehand when you willwalk him and introduce that routine a couple of monthsbefore. Also, reduce the level of close contact you havewith him now. For example, stop allowing him upstairs atnight, don’t have him cuddled up between you on the sofain the evening. Then he will be used to having less of yourattention and will not be jealous when baby takes priority. If there are any behaviour problems such as guarding(food or territory) or anxiety when left alone, you shouldget professional help now as they could be exacerbatedby the arrival of baby.

Pets

Local Petssponsored by the Heath Veterinary Group

To Flea or Not to Flea?My dog Charlie has suddenly started itching and I’vefound a few fleas on him. He hasn’t been out withother dogs or in boarding kennels, and the cat seemsfine. Where did they come from?

We often see sudden outbreaks of flea infestation at thestart of the summer when the weather warms up a little.During the cold winter months, fleas have been present insmall numbers, not sufficient to cause your pets anytrouble, but laying eggs in the carpets and bedding athome. The eggs have hatched and developed to pupae, many of which remain dormant until the weather warmsup in early summer, when they all hatch out together. Theresult is an infestation which has ‘come from nowhere’. To get your current problem under control, you need athree-pronged approach: • First, you need to get rid of the fleas on Charlie. Theeasiest way to do this is with a spot-on insecticide appliedto the back of his neck, or with tablets. • Second, you must remove the flea eggs, larvae andpupae in the home. Start with a thorough vacuuming, remembering all the nooks and crannies. Then apply agenerous dose of an environmental flea controlcontaining an “insect growth regulator” rather thaninsecticide. This must last at least 6 months. • Thirdly, you need to treat the cat to prevent his fleaslaying more eggs to re-infest Charlie. We all (dogs, catsand humans) vary in our sensitivity to flea bites, and it’svery likely that your cat has as many fleas as the dog buthe reacts less so you don’t see him itch. Again, there is achoice of treatments - spot-on insecticides, tablets, or aninjection. Finally, you should take steps to ensure you never getcaught out again by putting in place an effective year-round flea prevention programme for both dog and cat. Ifind the most convenient and effective is a monthly tabletfor dogs and a twice-yearly injection for cats. You will find a myriad of treatments for fleas in the petshops and supermarkets. All but a very few have pooreffects, and we regularly see flea problems in pets whohave been treated with over-the-counter products. Buyprescription treatments from your vet – you will be able todiscuss the best approach for your particular situation, and although they may cost a bit more, they areguaranteed to work!

Out and About

The history of NorthCardiff can be found inthe roots beneath its soil.

Underneath villages that weare familiar with today, lies theblood and toil of over 1,000years of history.Llanishen, to the east ofRhiwbina, is no exception.Over 1,500 years ago in AD535, two monks headed to thearea from Llandaff, in order tocreate new ‘llans’, orsettlements. For one of themonks, Isan, the area at thesouthern base of CaerphillyMountain was perfect. Thelocation benefitted from freshrunning water from the NantFawr stream nearby. The siteremained largely untoucheduntil the arrival of William theConqueror and his troops, twenty years after the Battle ofHastings. Control was handed over toRobert FitzHamon, William'sKinsman and Earl ofGloucester, who ensured thatWelsh resistance was

subdued. It was at asubsequent battle in NorthRhiwbina, that Iestyn apGwrgant was killed. The battlewas so ferocious that the localstream became overflowedwith blood, giving us the‘Bloody Brook’ that runsthrough Rhiwbina to this day. The Normans set aboutenlarging Isan’s llan, constructing a church to thenorth in the 12th century (anddedicated to the now St Isan),and establishing an agriculturalindustry which remainedlargely untouched until the late1800s. Until 1871, the Taff ValeRailway enforced an iron gripon the rail links between thecoalfaces of the valleys to thedocks at Cardiff. But that year, the Rhymney Railway wasgranted access to build a linefrom Caerphilly. The tunnelthat was bored throughCaerphilly Mountain caused anumber of fatalities, many ofwhom are buried at St Isan’sChurch.

The arrival of the railway hadan almost immediate impacton the suburb – its populationrose, the relatively quietlocation becoming a draw tothose from the city with wealth.Such was the rise inpopulation that in 1887, tworeservoirs were constructedand in 1922, Llanishenbecame officially part ofCardiff. The Second World War had aprofound effect on the village. At the outset, a RoyalOrdnance Factory wasestablished by the governmentto produce tank and anti-tankguns. Around its perimeters, defences were set up to stopany airborne German forcesattacking. The RAF set up aregiment base, introducing aglider training facility. TheGlider Field, (opposite whereLlanishen Leisure Centre nowis) is where the gliders wouldlaunch, at first relying on a cartow to get them airborne, andlater on in the war, balloon

barrage winches. WingCommander Guy Gibson (ofDambusters fame) visited thebase in 1943, even taking tothe skies in a glider with thetrainees. The unit was replaced soonafter by the US Army; glidersreplaced with Piper Cubs. Thesoldiers were billeted aroundthe village, becoming regularand popular inhabitants untilJune 1944. The villagesuddenly became deserted ofvisitors as the American guestsfound themselves on theD-Day beaches of NorthernFrance.Post-war, Llanishen and thesurrounding area lost itsagricultural roots andwelcomed an influx of housingand blue-collar businesses.Llanishen Business Parkreplaced farmland, and theROF was turned into TheAtomic WeaponsEstablishment in 1987. It wasresponsible for the design, manufacture and support ofwarheads for the UnitedKingdom's nuclear deterrentbefore closing its doors in1997. The area has now beendeveloped for housingpurposes.Llanishen is now home toWelsh TV station for Wales,S4C, and also houses theHead Office for the Eisteddfod.Llanishen was also thebirthplace of RichardMarquand, who directed thefamous Star Wars film, Returnof the Jedi.St Isan’s Church is at the

heart of the village. Itsarchitecture is in the Englishstyle with a white-washedinterior. It is formed from theoriginal Norman Church with a15th Century tower. The

south Aisle was the former Nave, and the Lady Chapel theSanctuary. Very little changed over thecourse of the centuries, but thebuilding did undergo extensivebuilding work in 1908.At the Oval Park, on the siteof Llanishen’s first church, sitsa tree. This is a replacementtree for the memorial tree thathad been planted in 1993 bythe Llanishen HistoricalSociety. This was recentlyblown over and uprooted bystrong winds. Cardiff’s CityParks Department replaced thetree, which is Hungarian Oak.Two familiar sights in modern-day Llanishen are the HMRevenue and Customsbuildings. Phase One, Gleider(Welsh for ‘glider’) House is an11-storey structure which isover-looked by the 16-storeyPhase Two building.

THE MILITARY GLIDERThe Horsa was the primaryglider used in the paratrooperlandings at both D-Day inJune 1944 and Arnhem in

September 1944.The gliders had a wingspan of88 feet, a length of 67 feet, and were made almost

entirely from 3-ply wood. Fullyladen they weighed some15,250 lbs- about 6.8 tons-and sank at about 400 feet aminute. The Horsa I was

designed to carry 25 soldierswhile the Horsa II had ahinged nose and carried

vehicles and guns. Llanishen played a major rolein training pilots. The picture(above) shows a glider landedin France (note the Cymru AmByth and leek painted on to

the side of the glider).

For many of us, our hard workin the garden pays dividendswhen can sit back and relax atour handiwork. It was over 20 years ago thatAnnie Jones from Llandaff, studied horticulture at PencoedCollege. Many years later, and fiveyears after having beendiagnosed with MS, Anniecreated her ‘Beach HouseGarden’ at her home inRhiwbina. It was inspired byEidfjord in Norway, local lakesand beaches and the gardensof Cornwall and Tresco. On moving into her bungalow,it was clear that the gardenhad been neglected for sometime and consisted of only aconcrete path, lawn, aconcrete slab patio, the oddshrub, bluebells and wonderfulZantedeschia lilies. But the soilwas good with plenty of sunand light and a wonderfullandscape beyond which couldbe ‘borrowed’. The garden’s main structurewas completed in the first yearwhen the house was adaptedfor easier living – somedecking, shallow steps, lighting, as well as thesummerhouse and its power.

After the pond and stream waywere finished (Gethin’s hardwork), 20 tons of pebbles werelaid on Mypex fabric by verystrong sons and kind friends. The boardwalks (built by sonDafydd, partner Brian andfriends Tony and Robert) havemade things easier for wheelsas well as the magnificentcovered deck alongside thesummerhouse built by Brian forAnnie’s 50th birthday. A couple of years later, Brianconstructed a roof for theupper deck which has been ahuge success. It’s great whenpotting up in the rain, as wellas a venue for breakfast, coffee, lunch and supper!Annie was walking and stillworking full time when thegarden was designed in 1999and though now a wheelchairuser, she manages tocontainer garden on thewooden decks and do at leastsome of the maintenance inthe main garden. The Beach House Gardenhas inspired many people wholive with the difficulties MSposes, and just shows howlimited energy can still be usedcarefully to create a haven forthose more difficult times.

With wonderful help fromfriends and family, the gardenis maturing into a very specialplace where folks can comeand enjoy the ambience. Offers of help are alwayswelcome as there is plenty ofsowing, planting, dividing andcollecting garden detritusamongst the pebbles. Moredifficult days are good forsharing the place anddreaming of new ideas to keepBrian busy! The plants do extraordinarilywell with the combination ofsun, a constantly moist soiland the effect of the pebblesboth reflecting the light andstoring heat is a winner.Cordyline palms seem to growtwice as fast as in othersituations and the spring, summer and autumn bulbslook stunning appearing outthe pebbles. After a difficult year health-wise last year, Annie isopening the Beach House tovisitors once more on SaturdayJune 26 to raise funds for theMS Trust – there’ll berefreshments and plants forsale. For further details call AnnieJones on 07967 637857.
