The RF/Microwave Engineering Group at the University, currently led by Prof. Jiasheng Hong, an IEEE Fellow, has undertaken many governmental and industrial research and development (R&D) projects. For example, we currently have a research contract (£329,085) with SIMCLAIRS (Studies for Integrated Multifunction Compact Lightweight Airborne Radars and Systems): an Innovative Technology Partnership to develop advanced RF Sensors for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The SIMCLAIRS consortium consists of four companies: SELEX Sensor & Airborne Systems Ltd, SAAB AB, THALES Systèmes aéroportés and THALES UK Ltd. Our other ongoing research projects sponsored by the government and industry include: Electronically tunable wideband microwave filters (Industrial CASE, sponsored by EPSRC and SELEX Sensor & Airborne Systems Ltd Development of multilayer miniature microwave filters for manufacturing (Industrial CASE, sponsored by EPSRC and BSC Filters Ltd) Millimtre-wave passive device technologies (Engineer Doctor, sponsored by EPSRC and MESL Microwave Ltd) Our technologies involve novel multilayer RF/microwave circuits using advanced packaging materials such as flexible, organic, liquid crystal polymer (LCP) substrates for system-in-package (SiP), and heterogeneous integration of switching/ tuning elements or functional materials for electronically tunable or reconfigurable functionalities. Shown below is an example for a miniature ultra-wideband (UWB) filter with a switchable notch band:
