INTRODUCTION.

..When Mr. and Mrs. Schneider first visited the Wallen-

paupack region of Pike Co., Pa., in June 1939, their inter¬

est in genealogy centered on the Kimble and Ridgway

families, who had lived in this beautiful region before

making their early trek to Michigan and Wisconsin, many

years before the Civil War. Subsequent visits by the

Schneiders to Wayne and Pike Counties in 1940 and 1930

and by Mr. Howard Kimble in 1952, and extensive re¬

search by them culminated in a joint venture to produce

the first book on Jacob Kimble and Thomas Ridgwav of

Pike Co., Pa., and their descendants.

This genealogy is not complete in every respect, but it

should be of inestimable value to anyone who wishes to

continue the work in the years to come. With this book

as a start it should not be an insurmountable task for any

interested party to enlarge upon any branch if he is will¬

ing to spend the time on it.

Compiling this book has been complicated by the fact

that Jacob Kimble’s brother, Levi Kimball, lived in the

Paupack area for some time and also left descendants;

fortunately, however, most of them, to our knowledge, re¬

tained the original spelling of Kimball. Census collectors,

however, were careless and frequently used Kimball, Kim¬

ble, Cimbal and other variations indiscriminatelv.

It is the intention of the writers to continue with their

research and copies of any worthwhile additional material

will be filed with the Newberry Library, Chicago, and, if

possible, with the State Library at Hartford, Conn., and

the Honesdale, Pa. Historical Society.

It is hoped that this book will be of interest and of value

to many future readers.

FIRST FOUR GENERATIONS.

The following first four generations of our subject

Jacob5 Kimble, were obtained from Morrison and Shar¬

pies ’ fine two volume work on the Kimball Family and

the numbers shown refer to the code in their volumes and

are repeated for reference only.

Starting, however, with Jacob5 Kimble as No. 5, the

writers have designated a new series of numbers because

none of his descendants are listed in Morrison and

Sharpies. The reason, no doubt, for this was that Jacob5

Kimble moved from Preston, Conn., to the Wallenpaupack

settlement in Pike Co., Pa., about 1774 and changed

the spelling of his name from Kimball to Kimble. The

spelling of Kimble has been retained by all of Jacob’s6

descendants, with only one or twro exceptions.

First Generation.

No. 1.

1. Richard1 Kimball

M. Ursula Scott, bapt. Feb. 14, 1597, daughter of Henry

and Martha (Whatlock) Scott; came with his family from

Rattlesden, Suffolk Co., England in April 1634. They set¬

tled first at Watertown, Mass, and owned several acres of

land, which is now Cambridge, at the corner of Huron

Ave. and Appleton St. The family removed to Ipswich in

about 1636.

in the general section of the State Library at Hartford,

Conn. (See Parkhurst Manuscript of Early Families of

New London, Conn., and vicinity, 36 vol.) '

Mr. Schneider visited Preston, Conn., in 1944 and again

in 1950, and found little of interest. The Avery burial

ground contained Parkes, Witters and an Elisha and Hope

Kimball, but no John or Jaco O -X^-L-LLl UClli. He was informed

that there is an old private cemetery north of Preston on

the old Kimball property, but it is suggested that examina¬

tion of the land records in the Preston Twn. Clerk’s office

be made before further searching for any old Kimball land¬

marks.

at Indian Orchard, but sold farm to Bulklev Beardslee

and moved to Ohio. Walter enlisted in the army in 1776

at request of Major Meeker, who lived nearby in Pa. His

services lasted until the end of the war. Was highly suc¬

cessful; a tall man 6'4" tall. In 1824 he removed to Kill-

buck, Holmes Co., Ohio, where he lived as late as July

2, 1835, as shown by the U. S. Pension Records.

8. Stephen6 Kimble (Jacob5)

B. Dec. 25, 1757. He was taken captive by the Indians

and after long suffering and privation, died a prisoner.

This, however, has been refuted by some writers. In any

event, it appears that Stephen died before 1800 without

marrying because there appears to be no evidence either

in the Census Records or any other that indicates other¬

wise. (See Mathews, pages 80, 81, 684, 685, 947.)

frame house was standing until 1950 when it was torn

down for its lumber.

20 The Kimble Family

William was Ephraim’s eldest son and he lived at the

homestead at Kimbles (Narrows) or in the very near

vicinity until his death in 1830. He.was the first post¬

master at the Narrows when it was established in 1813

and may have lived in the house just south of the bridge.

(Occupied by Caleb Decker, the postmaster in 1939.)

Warren Kimble in “Mathews”, page 960, says that

William had six children. The writer has not been able

to determine who was the sixth. Apparently, he was born

'sometime between 1815 and 1822, between Newcomb and

Catherine, and may have died young or never married.

are; operated a hotel and general store at Dyberry. Son

Martin continued to live on homestead and operated hotel.

RIDGWAY FAMILY.

First Generation.

1. Thomas Ridgway.

B. about 1755 in New Jersey; m. 1779 to Martba Mat¬

thews (b. about 1760; d. June 12, 1832); settled at Milford,

Pike Co., Pa. from Hunterdon Co., N. J. about 1800.

Among their children: i. Matthew, d. Oct. 1820; lived in Milford, Pa.

ii. Gertrude, lived at Hainesburg, N. J.

2. iii. Charles B., b. Dec. 4, 1789; m. Elizabeth Barnes.

Thomas Ridgway was of Scotch extraction and a tailor

by trade. Born between 1755 and 1760, he fought in the

Revolutionary War, although he and his wife were styled

Quakers. He married Martha Matthews in 1779, her brother

married Otey Younge in 1800 and Otey’s brother Philip

married Thomas Ridgway’s sister Prudence. The Matthews

came from Trenton, N. J.

Martha (Matthews) Ridgway was born about 1765. Her

husband Thomas left her and returned to England in 1S11.

She lived with her son Matthew in Milford until his death

in 1820 when she went to live with her daughter Gertrude.

She died June 12, 1837, and is buried in the Hainesburg,

N. J. local cemetery. (Cemetery stone at Hainesburg is

hard to decipher but appears as Martha, wife of Thomas

Ridgway, died June 12, 1837, age 82 years).

40 The Kimble Family

It is also believed that Thomas Ridgway, of Milford was a

grandson or great grandson of a Thomas Ridgwav, who

was, in turn, the son of Richard Ridgwav, who came to

America in 1679 and settled in New Jersey and became the

progenitor of the New Jersey Ridgwavs. (See “Descent of

the Ridgwav Family, by George C. Ridgwav, Evansville,

Ind., 1923).

Most of the above information was obtained from an old

notebook found in the attic of Diana (Keene) La Compte

of Milford, Pa. Mrs. La Compte said it was copied in the

notebook by her mother Sarah Jane (Burleigh) Keene,

daughter of Mary (Ridgway) Burleigh, about 1905, and

was obtained, in part, from a Mr. Kern of N. Y. C,, who

was also working on the Ridgway genealogy.

While it appears entirely probable that Thomas Ridgway

of Milford was a descendant of Richard and his son Thomas

Ridgway of the New Jersey line, the exact connection has

not been completed. From the best information gained so

far, it appears that Thomas Ridgway came from Hunter¬

don County, N. J., and settled at Milford about 1800 or very

soon thereafter. One son Matthew continued to live at

Milford, while his other son Charles B. moved to Lacka-

waxen about 1807 and lived there his remaining years.

Mathews, page 955 says that John Barnes married Eliza¬

beth Haley or Hawly. Among their children were Thomas,

Abraham, Cornelius, Willliam, Nathan, John and Jeremiah

and their descendants are scattered through the West and

elsewhere. Elizabeth, a daughter of John Sr., was the wife

of Charles B. Bidgway of Lackawaxen. Henry Barnes, a

Britton Barnes were his sons. Virginia m. Dr. E. Haliday;

descendants. John Barnes Sr., was the first settler of Lack-

awaxen coming before the Revolution and locating at the

mouth of the Lackawaxen River on the north side of the

stream.

Charles B. Ridgway came from Milford to Lackawaxen

and located, about 1807, on a farm one mile from the mouth

of the Lackawaxen River, also on the north side of the

stream. His home was alongside the Delaware and Hudson

Canal at Lock No. 3 which was known as Ridgway’s Lock.

ful business man, wTas justice of the peace for many years

and. took an active part in public affairs. His son Thomas J.

44 The Kimble Family

David B. Ridgway and Catherine W. Kimble were mar¬

ried by Rev. William Reddy in the presence of Thomas J.

Ridgway, David’s brother and Ephraim Kimble, a cousin

of Catherine.

In 1844 or 1845 David B. bought land from William R.

Walker along the Lackawaxen River and on which the Dela¬

ware and Hudson Canal Lock No. 24 was located. The farm¬

house stood less than 100 feet in front of the locldiouse

and less than 200 feet north of the lock itself and here

David B. and Catherine lived until they came to Wisconsin

in 1856.

David B. it is said, in addition to the farm, ran a store

with a cobbler shop in the basement, the foundation of

which still remains on the south side of the lock. The farm¬

house was still standing in 1940 but by 1950 nothing but

rubble remained. The lockhouse in 1950 was occupied and

the rather large barn near the road is still in use. Just in¬

side the large barn door to the left will be found,—1848—

D. B. Ridgway carved in letters eight inches high on the

manger.

David B. sold his farm at lock 24 early in 1856 and with

his family moved to Wisconsin and arrived at Whitewater

on May 24. He purchased a farm in Lima Twn., Rock Co.

about a mile east of the Newcomb Kimble place and erected

the buildings. Just as he finished the house, he died of

appendicitis on Jan. 19, 1857. Catherine W. continued to

live on the farm for several years but finally rented it and

moved to Whitewater to live at the home of her daughter,

Minerva, wife of Dr. C. I. Miller, where she died June 12,

1899.
