    REX ESSENTIAL OVERVIEW

    REX Essential is a complete

    weather, environment, and

    ight planning add-on for

    Microsoft Flight Simulator

    X and PREPAR3D. The

    development team of REX

    Essential is committed to

    maximizing the weather,

    planning and ight realism

    experienced by its ight

    simulator customers and we

    feel that REX Essential has

    come a long way towards

    achieving this goal.

REX Essenal is a weather environment creaon, display, and

manipulaon program which includes a robust selecon of beauful

user-selectable or automacally-selectable sky, cloud themesand other environment textures, real-world and custom weather

generators, real-me weather reporng & updang.

REX allows you to control environment, water and airport textures,

as well as lighng eects that are so crical to the enjoyment and

immersion within the ight simulator experience. All of these features

may be fully manipulated to your individual tastes.

For REX Essenal, REX Game Studios has partnered withFlightAware,

the leading aviaon soware and data services company to expand

upon real-world ight planning within REX Essenal.

We have moved all back end data to a local relaonal database. This

allows us to store and do more with the data we have. Having a new

database structure allows us to improve not just one area, but mulple

    areas within REX Essenal.

    WHAT IS REX EDGE TECHNOLOGY?

REX EDGE Technologyis REX Game Studios version of its own cloud

technology. It is an array of dedicated servers that have been setup

to handle the transfer of large amounts of data to be ulized not only

within REX Essenal, but in all future projects. This technology has

allowed us to expand the connecvity of REX Essenal. All REX users

are now connected in various ways to each other, thus allowing them

to share their creaons with other folks around the world who are

    using REX Essenal.

    REX ESSENTIAL OVERVIEW

With REX EDGEyou now have the ability to share

your texture themes with the REX Community.

Suppose you created that killer look and wanted to

share it with others - you now have the ability to dothat. Or with the simple click of a buon you can

install a users theme in a maer of seconds. We

have added categories to themes so that you can

now search for the favorite theme by creator name

    or theme category.

WithREX EDGEwe also have included the ability

to back up your texture themes. Therefore, if you

create 100 dierent themes, you will never lose

them if you have created a backup/restore account.

It is that simple! Or in the case of when we issue

an update, in the past you would lose your createdthemes. With this new funcon you will be able to

restore your themes automacally aer the update

    has been installed.

REX EDGE also allows us to bring together a

repository of weather data. Every 10 minutes we

are downloading and storing the latest weather

informaon from NOAAand VATSIM. We just

recently implemented the storing and archiving

of real upper-level wind and temperature data

from worlds radiosonde reports. This is extremely

excing to us in that instead of providing a forecast

we are now the only one providing accurate real-

me winds alo data. We have found that this

data has signicantly reduced the quick changes in

winds shis alo. Though we are sll bound by the

limits of FSX technology, this sll brings a realism

not found before in the ight sim community.

Another example of howREX EDGE is used withinREX is aer you congure the program, you will be

prompted to setup a user account. This will create

a user prole on our cloud servers. When you

save your user conguraon in REX, it will be saved

locally on your machine and also on our cloud

servers. If for some reason you need to re-install

Windows or REX, all you have to do is simply login

and your original sengs will be reset from our

servers. You will not be required to login each me

you open REX, as that process will be done for you

automacally. If no internet connecon is present,

you will sll be able to use REX, but you will not beable to ulize this specic feature.

Outside of REX EDGE, we have sped up the

process of installing textures. We have added the

ability to reduce the install me with the click of

a buon. This will only install key textures such

as sky, clouds, wave animaons, and runways/

taxiways. This process eliminates the need for

decompressing large water textures and reseng

    to correct resoluons before install.

This technology also opens up a huge amount

of potenal in other areas with future

projects, thus allowing us to connect all of

    our technologies together.

We have partnered with and embedded the

technology of FlightAware into REX Essenal.

Below is a quick, but brief overview of what

    FlightAware can do:

With FlightAwareinside REX Essenal, you are

able to search for real-world, real-me IFR ights

scheduled at a single airport or between routes

between two airports. You are provided details

about the ight and then able to import the ightplan into FSX/P3D via REX Essenal.

    If you decide to y a real-me, real-world route,

REX will provide current ight nocaons via

the weather engine while in-ight. If selecng an

airport to search, then navigate to another module

of REX, you will be provided regular alerts in REX

of the next ight scheduled to depart from that

airport. REX Essenal will give the most realisc

    experience possible with real-world, real-me

ight plans from most major airlines and countries

    across the world.

    SHARE YOUR FLIGHT PLAN

Say you just own a really interesng ight plan

you created through REX, a third-party ightplanner, FlightAware, or even FSX/P3D and now

youd like to share it with others or save it for later.

With our new REX EDGE Technologywe provide

the means to share your ight plans with other

REX Essenal users around the world.

We sll provide a means to create a ight plan,

but now when you create a ight plan either by

FlightAware, imporng a ight plan from FSX/

    P3D, other third-party planners, imporng a

community ight plan, or creang your own, you

will be provided a detailed view. You can view theplan along with all of the associated waypoints

including real winds alo data for each waypoint.

So programming your FMC within the latest

installment of a third-party aircra is much easier.

With REX Essenal you can export your plan and

set your parking starng point. No longer will you

start at the end of the runway, but you can select

whether you want general aviaon parking or to

start from a gate. If using FlightAwarewithin REX,

you can select the actual gate in which the plan

    states in its report.

With the new FLIGHT CENTER we bring not just

the basics, but realism and the community aspect.

    NEW SOUNDS AND TEXTURE PROCESSES

    REX Essenal now includes true

environment and weather-relatedaudio. We went through great

    lengths to maintain a certain

    sound through a meculous

    mastering process. REX Game

Studios owns and operates a full-edged recording

studio complete with its own mastering facility

using state-of-the-art equipment and we spared

no expense to bring the sound experience to our

users. The dynamic sounds of rain, wind and

    thunder will blow you away.

Users with lower-end systems can now selecta compressed algorithm for wave animaon

sets with minimized visual anomalies, as usually

associated with this type of compression.

The new Natural Sky texture set adds a unique

nt to your dawn, day, and dusk skies. Also, now

included is the ability for the user to select cloudsbased upon the cloud type.

The new weather-inuenced process has been

completely re-wrien inside REX Essenal. You will

experience condions closer to what is actually

happening in the real-world. This process will give

you a wider range of variety ulizing all textures

    within REX Essenals.

Thank you for choosing REX Essenal

for FSX and Prepar3D as your ightsimulator environment add-on!

    INITIAL WEATHER DELAY TIMER

The IWDT is a special mer that allows you to set

the iniaon me in which the REX Weather Engine

will begin to inject weather into FSX/P3D. You may

select a starng me between 1 and 5 minutes.

This is extremely useful in that a shorten wait me

allows the REX Weather Engine to inject weather

while you are sll conguring FSX/P3D.

    WEATHER SURFACE REGION

Allows you to select the size of weather region

travelled before weather engine loads again. Rangesfrom 4,225 sq. miles, up to covering the enre world.

Within the weather engine (WASys), consists a new

menu item which allows seng the weather refresh

    me from 60 / 30 / 15 minutes. These features work

together to provide the most accurate weather within

a mely maer. If for example you travel outside the

weather region, REX refreshes the weather region

and resets the mer, or if passing the me seng for

refresh, REX will reset your region size.

    WEATHER REFRESH RATE

This causes the REX WX Engine to reload weather

based upon me. If you y out of the weather

region, then the mer is reset. If you dont y out

of the weather region but the mer resets, then

the region area is also reset.

    WEATHER INJECTION ALTITUDE SETTINGS

This feature allows you to set the minimum

altude in feet in which the weather engine will

engage and inject weather into FSX/P3D. The REX

weather engine will perform an inial weatherload, but consecuve injecons will be based upon

the altude of your aircra and the minimum

injecon altude. During descent, the weather

will not inject aer the aircra descends below

the minimum altude. You may force a weather

injecon by selecng the LOAD WEATHER menu

    item on the WASys.

if using REX Essenal in a network situaon.

Enable VATSIM Weather data - The default

weather source for REX Essenal is NOAA, but we

also provide the VATSIM weather data that comes

directly from the VATSIM weather servers.

Enable Green Message Bar Within FSX- Per user

feedback, this new feature allows you to turn ON

or OFF the green informaon bar within ight

simulator. However, be aware that this informaon

bar also advises the status of weather engine

injecon, so if you noce the weather engine not

injecng weather, be certain to check this feature

    is set to ON.

Enable Weather Data Overwrite- This is a new

feature that allows REX to download the weather

every 10 minutes and overwrite the previous dataso that you are presented with the latest weather

    close REX.

Enable Realisc Haze Layer- Enabling this opon

is another feature users requested to have control

over. Inially we have disabled this feature in FSX

as its viewed as more of a nuisance rather than a

usable feature. Although this will create hard edgeswhen intersecng with terrain, and cause a cloud-

type formaon to follow the aircra, for certain IFR

condions this will help immerse the user.

Enable Weather Data Download- This feature

turns ON or OFF the ability for REX Essenal to

    WEATHER INTERPOLATING SETTINGS

Enable Interpolaon of Weather Staons -

received. For more accurate level of weather

polaon, the slider should be moved towards thele. However, few staons will actually receive

number of staons with weather, but the weather

    will be less accurate.

this feature causes the REX Weather Engine to use

a default seng of 20NM or to use the sengs

provided in the GLOBAL VISIBILITY LAYERS.

Enable Real Visibility Smoothing- This feature

helps create more smoothness to the visibility

across a region. Thus, because of the limitaons

of the FSX/P3D visibility plane we are sll ableto produce a smooth transion vercally and

horizontally. However, this will also cause your

metar reports to not accurately report the visibility

    for each staon.

    FOG GENERATION SETTINGS

Enable Real Weather Fog - With this feature

turned on, the REX Weather Engine is forced to

ulize special processes to create a more realisc

    fog representaon vercally and horizontally

    based upon the metar report.

Enable Stratus Clouds As Fog - To add more depth

to fog within FSX/P3D, we have coded an opon

for you to allow the REX weather engine to ulize

    SET GLOBAL VISIBILITY LAYERS

This allows you to custom set your own visibility

    10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 Naucal Miles (NM).

This will take some experimenng and will yield a

sasfactory soluon to the haze problem.

Every user will have their own ideas about this and

hopefully most users can arrive at a sasfactory

compromise between haze and reality. We realize

that this is not an opmum soluon for everyone

aircra with the same wind. This opon ulizes

mulple levels of winds read from the radiosonde

reports. When updates occur, they occur on

the fringes of the weather region so that radical

changes do not happen at the aircra. When

the weather updates, it reads the original wind

sengs and compares them to the new ones from

upon the fringes of the weather region. Probably

the most unrealisc form of represenng winds, but

creates the smoothest opon for wind handling.

Enable Wind Turbulence- This opon turns ON orOFF the eects of wind turbulence within the REX

    weather engine inside FSX/P3D.

Enable Wind Shear- Enables you to have that

scary experience of ying in thunderstorms

and other severe weather. This may increase

wind shis and other wind anomalies to an

unacceptable and/or unrealisc level. If this

happens, disable this feature to give more smooth

    realisc transion experience between clear,

    cloudy, and storm condions.

    SET GLOBAL WIND LAYERS

This new feature allows you to customize the wind

layers, wind speeds and wind direcon globally.

This will overwrite default weather if the Enabled

Real Weather Winds is unchecked. This defaults

the FSX/P3D winds to the layers created within

this module. You may set maximum wind speedin KTS., direcon and wind layer height. This

    overrides all other wind sengs.

    MAXIMUM TURBULENCE

Allows you to dene the maximum level that

clouds will exert turbulence. This ranges from

the minimum level of one (1) to maximum of ve

(5). Level 5 will denitely shake and bake your

passengers! This does not mean each cloud will

experience level 5 turbulence, it just means that

you may experience up to level 5 turbulence.

    MAXIMUM CLOUD ICING

Allows you to set the maximum level in which icing

will be experienced while ying through clouds. The minimum level of one (1) means very lile to

the maximum level of ve (5). This does not mean

that you will experience level 5 icing in each cloud

scenario, but it is the maximum allowed level.

    CLOUD RATIOS

Allows you to determine what the rao of clouds

used at mid/low levels are. If you select cumulus,

then the majority of the clouds at lower levels

will be of the cumulus form. If you set the middle

level, you will experience a mixture of cumulus

and stratus. If you set stratus, then the majority of

clouds experienced will be of the stratus form.

    CLOUD/STORM ENHANCEMENTS

    Enable Enhanced Thunderstorms- When enable,

this opon causes FSX/P3D to use the maximum

level of severity to enhance how thunderstorms

    are represented.

Enable Enhanced Lightning- This creates a morerealisc view of lightning that gives more depth to

    the way thunderstorms are represented.

Enable Storm Scud- We like to call this the

meanness factor. This applies an added feeling

of meanness to the thunderstorm look while upon

The OPTION MANAGER, as seen ingure 6,controls which textures are installed into FSX/P3D.

    The OPTIMIZATIONarea controls the resoluon

and algorithm of textures installed, and an overall

system performance secon which allows REX to

decide which sengs are best suitable depending

on the capabilies of your computer system.

The DE-SELECTbuon allows you to easily and

quickly deselect/select all sengs on this menu.

A few notes about the OPTIONS MANAGER need

    to be menoned here:

This secon controls which textures are installed

into FSX/P3D. Any changes made to this menu will

not take aect unl the textures are loaded into

    ight simulator.

Textures cannot be loaded into FSX/P3D whileight simulator is running! Many users make

the mistake of trying to install textures while

ight simulator is running. The result is a crash

in ight simulator, REX or both. So if a crash is

encountered, or some other unexplained behavior

while iniang this process, quickly check to see if

    ight simulator is running.

Use of the 4096 or 2048 textures will cause serious

performance issues for most lower end systems.

Use of the higher resoluon textures will result in

lower frame rates and performance whereas useof the lower resoluon textures will result in lower

quality. If performance issues are experienced, try

using the lower resoluon textures. These lower

resoluon textures are sll exceponal and many

people nd that they desire and use these textures

even though they have higher end systems.

    OPTIONS MANAGER

Once the textures have been loaded into ight

simulator, un-checking the box does NOTcause

them to be uninstalled. It means that you can load

the textures into ight simulator and then uncheck

that box and REX Essenal wont install them again

in the future. As described below for the water

textures, this can save a LOT of me.

It will require anywhere from 6 to 15 minutes,

depending on the system, to load textures if all boxes

are checked. This me can be signicantly reduced

(down to 1 minute)by de-selecng all the water

texture boxes. For those folks that want to connue to

experiment with various other texture sets, but dontwant to wait the lengthy load mes, we recommend

that you install the water textures once, then de-select

all water texture boxes. Because water textures were

already installed, they will remain installed throughout

subsequent texture installs as described above and the

install me will drop signicantly. If you would like to

experiment with dierent water textures, those water

    check boxes must be checked.

We highly recommend the use of the DXT5

Opmized Clouds seng. DXT5 is the most

exible general purpose compression codec, so

if problems are experienced using REX Essenal

clouds at higher resoluon, select the DXT5

Opmized Clouds seng. The same goes for the

Wave Animaon seng. 32-bit is much more

demanding on the GPU, thus if problems arise

with the use of the 32-bit seng, select the DXT-1

opon, and be sure to install the textures into

ight simulator for the changes to take aect.

Overall System Performance Sengs- This drop

down menu contains four system performancelevels you may choose from. The boom three are

self explanatory. Choose one of these three and
