En Argentina se sabía que ese desmañado y variopinto conjunto llamado “caballos criollos”, era una raza fuerte y muy resistente, hecha de galopes en las inmensi-dades de la Pampa y la Patagonia, moldeada por los caprichos del te-rreno y templada por las hostilida-des del clima.
Para el suizo (radicado en Argen-tina) Aimé Félix Tschiffely, esa raza merecía un reconocimiento internacional, para lo cual planeó un viaje hasta Nueva York sobre el lomo de estos animales. Dis-puso de dos ejemplares, propiedad de Emilio Solanet, comprados al cacique tehuelche Liempichún: el malhumorado Mancha y el más sociable Gato.
Partieron desde la Sociedad Ru-ral de Buenos Aires el 24 de abril de 1925. Atravesaron las geo-grafías más diversas, castigados por vientos de todos los colores, fríos inescrupulosos y calores de
averno, llegando a alcanzar los 5.990 metros sobre el nivel del mar en los Andes bolivianos y cayendo en el más profundo desánimo más de una vez.
Sólo una herida provocada por una mula detuvo a Gato en México. Sus compañeros, el 20 de septiem-bre de 1928, habiendo atravesado 20 países en sus 21.500 kilómetros de marcha, pisaron la 5ta Avenida, que detuvo su tránsito en home-naje a los aventureros.
En Argentina fueron recibidos como héroes. Volvieron enteros: Gato murió recién en 1944, Man-cha en 1947 y Aimé en 1954. Pero el último viaje del suizo fue en 1998: se halló una carta en la que mani-festaba su deseo de ser enterrado junto a sus amigos Gato y Mancha. Paralelamente al traslado, el Con-greso nacional declaró el 20 de septiembre Día Nacional del Ca-ballo. En Ayacucho, en el campo Solanet, descansan los 3 viajeros.
ARGENTINE HORSES IN NEW YORK; THE STORY OF GATO AND MANCHA.In Argentina it was known that that awkward and mixed assortment known as “criollo horses” was a very strong and resilient breed, made through galloping along the vastness of the pampas and the Patagonia region, modelled on the quirks of the terrain and tempered by the hostile climate.// For Swiss-born Argentine long rider Aimé Félix Tschiffely, that breed deserved international recognition, for which he planned a trip to New York on the back of the aforementioned animals. He took two of them, who belonged to Emilio Solanet, who had in turn bought them from Tehuelche chief Liempichún: the ill-tempered Mancha and the more sociable Gato.// They set off from the Rural Society in Buenos Aires on April 24, 1925. They crossed the most diverse landscapes, were beaten by winds of all colors, unscrupulous cold, and hell-like heat, reaching 5,990 meters above sea level in the Bolivian Andes and falling into the deepest hopelessness more than once.// Only a wound caused by a mule stopped Gato in Mexico. Having crossed 20 countries along the 21,500-km journey, on September 20, 1928, his mates hit the 5th Avenue, which stopped its traffic as a homage to the adventurers.// In Argentina they were received like heroes. They came back in one piece: Gato died in 1944, Mancha in 1947 and Aimé in 1954. But the adventurer’s last journey was in 1998: a letter had been found in which Aimé stated his wish to be buried next to his friends Gato and Mancha. In addition to moving his remains, the Argentine Congress declared September 20 the National Horse Day. In Ayacucho, in ranch Solanet, lie the three travellers.

A snowy landscape against a blue sky in the Andes range. Such was the picture in our minds before we ventured out to a city surrounded by mountains, rivers, lakes and forests, located within the Lanín national park. /// We arrived on a cold, rainy afternoon, dropped our packs in the hostel and went out into the snow to check out the place. /// Soon afterwards, by night, we were among mountains and fog by the banks of lake Lacar. And nothing better than a pizza and beer for a welcome to this place, where a smell of adventure wafts around every corner. /// Waking up to the sunlight on the snow-capped mountains through the window is very good for your eyesight. /// The walk began in the civic center, which is beautiful wherever you look, with its square, the lake, and its typical mountain village architecture. /// We went on to the Bandurrias lookout point, which is within the territory of the Curruhuinca Mapuche indigenous com-munity. It’s a natural balcony with an incredible panoramic view of lake Lacar. A good time to drink mate and breathe the mountain air.
At 9am the next day, the guide came with the snow gear and picked us up for a trip to mount Chapelco. After a few minutes of travelling, we got there. We jumped on the snowboards and as soon as we stepped on the snow we fell over, the first of many falls. We sled down once and again, enjoying the magical scenery to the fullest. /// At the end of the day, we only wanted to sleep. /// A new day dawned, and again we went to mount Chapelco. This time we had to use snow chains to arrive. The snow was falling hard and we were going to hike on snowshoes. It was AWESOME!!! /// It was Héctor, an experienced mountaineering guide, who led us on under a heavy snowfall along the foot of the mountain range. We ended up enjoying a nice steaming cup of chocolate with alfajores de dulce de leche in an endless snowy forest. After that relaxing moment, we went back with uncertain, deep steps, steps taken with almost half our bodies, which made the journey an unforgettable experience.
Who doesn’t like dogs? Riding a dog-pulled sled feels great. A ride in the middle of the snowy forest, surrounded by wildlife. We couldn’t
get more contact with snow, especially when it’s snowing so hard that the Siberian Huskies have to trace new paths to take you back
to the cabin. That sound in the forest among the barking and howling was music to our ears. An incredible experience. /// Now it was
our turn to drive. So we jumped on the snowmobiles and gave the forest experience a touch of speed and adrenalin. We rode all over the
place to the point of now knowing where we were. It was all white around us. Not that it mattered; we were having a blast! /// After so
much adventure, we needed a little relax and went out again for a walk around the town center. We visited “La Pastera”, the museum
of Che Guevara, a place where Ernesto “Che” Guevara and his roadmate Alberto Granado spent a night during his famous motorcycle
trip around America.
Another museum worth visiting is the Argentine Patents museum. We couldn’t say much about it except that, on the outside, it looks like a very pretty house. We rang the bell so many times that a woman came out and very gently told us that her husband was taking a nap, but if we were really interested she could wake him up. She came back saying that her husband was fast asleep. So we moved on, as we didn’t know we were supposed to book in advance. /// The weather was perfect for a relaxed activity, a boat trip to Quila Quina. Once in the village, a sign pointing at a waterfall caught our attention. We started walking until we ran across Verónica, a mapuche woman from the Curruhuinca community, who charged us 5 pesos to let us in. The place is dreamlike, but we wanted to go further so we climbed up some slippery rocks until we found ourselves lost in the middle of a quiet forest with the amazing view of the Lacar lake in the background. ABSOLUTE PEACE. /// As we went down, we found Verónica again, and without letting the “Keep off” sign scare us, we stayed in her hut talking about the mapuche’s history, customs, traditions and rituals. Meanwhile, homemade bread baked in a fire, mates went round and she knit some beautiful wool socks.
On the way back, we slept and recharged, as we were up for something very special. Again, the guide took us to the base of mount
Chapelco, but this time by night. The only light was the moonlight. We put on the snowshoes, the headlamps, and out we went for a walk
in the woods. We went with some very cool guides and a number of local stray dogs. The hike was very funny, with jokes, laughs, and
snowball fights. After the hike, we were warmly welcomed at “La Casita del Bosque”, the little house in the forest, a typical mountain
refugee in the middle of the woods, surrounded by a snowy landscape, with a Dinner, with a capital D. For starters, melted cheese with
potatoes, smoked venison and boar; a main course of beef, chicken and vegetables cooked by oneself, with a variety of sauces. To cap it
all, a dessert of berries with ice cream. That night we were ecstatic. The journey back to the van was not lacking in excitement at all, as
we speeded down the mountain on the snowmobiles. /// That was a different night and, unfortunately, the last one of that unforgettable

THE BRIDGE HOUSE /// Among the many architectural gems in Mar del Plata, one stands out because of its moder-nity and originality. It’s a bridge, it’s a house, it’s a house on a bridge, it’s the legacy of one of the big names of Ar-gentine architecture: Amancio Williams. /// Completed in 1946, and designed for Amancio William’s father, composer Alberto Williams, it was located in a tree-filled plot bound by Matheu, Funes and Saavedra streets, and the railway. Its 9x27 square meteres were conceived to live together with all that nature. The bridge crossed the Las Chacras brook, which used to meander around the area. That communication was replicated in the glass walls surrounding the whole house. The unplastered exterior concrete texture completed the concept, together with the wood prevai-ling in the inside. The house hit the headlines of specialized media from a number of countries. But the death of the architect in 1989 started a course of underuse, abandonment, vandalization and fires. The house was declared a Historical Monument in 1997 but, paradoxically, that only made matters worse. Fortunately, work started a few years ago in order to restore the house to apply to Unesco for World Heritage status so that further protection is given.A house, a bridge: metaphors for so many things. Who knows what the combination of both is telling us.
Entre las muchas perlitas arquitectónicas de Mar del Plata, hay una que se destaca por su modernismo y originalidad. Es un puente, es una casa, es una casa sobre un puente, es el legado de uno de los grandes nombres de la arquitectura argentina: Amancio Williams. Terminada en 1946, pensada para que sea habitada por su padre, el compositor Alberto Williams, se la ubicó en un lote inundado de árboles (entres las calles Matheu, Funes, Saavedra y las vías del ferrocarril). Sus 9x27 metros fueron ideados para convivir con toda esa naturaleza: El puente, dialogaba con el arroyo Las Chacras, que entonces serpenteaba por la zona. Esa comunicación también se daba a través del vidriado que abarca todo su perímetro. Dejar en el exterior el hormigón desnudo, sin revoques, completó el concepto, junto con la madera que predominaba en el interior. La casa obtuvo inmediata repercusión en medios especializados de diversos países. Pero al morir su creador en 1989, comienza un derrotero de poco uso, abandono, vandalismo e incendios. Es declarada Monumento Histórico en 1997, pero, paradójicamente, las cosas sólo empeoraron. Afortunadamente, hace unos años se trabaja en su recuperación para poder presentarla ante Unesco para que sea declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad y, de ese modo, reciba mayor protección.
Una casa, un puente: metáforas para tantas cosas. Quién sabe todo lo que nos quieren decir las dos cosas juntas.

El Rocsen es un museo infinito. Si bien ocupa un espacio determinado (más de 2.500 metros cuadrados) y tiene un número concreto de piezas (casi 33.000 exhibidas y 6.000 esperando espacio y restauración), traza rutas que abarcan todo el planeta, en todas sus épocas.
Como sueño, parece desmesurado. Como concreción, es un apasionante recorrido que hace más de 40 años se instaló en un bellísimo rincón del Valle de Traslasierra, en la provincia de Córdoba, a 5 kilómetros de Nono. Pero que venía de antes: “desde los 3 años anduve con los bolsillos llenos de piedritas, raíces, animalitos vivos” me cuenta Juan Santiago Bouchon, el dueño y mentor del museo. “A los 8 años hice mi primer descubrimiento de importancia en Niza, donde nací en 1926, escarbando encontré un soldadito romano de barro cocido de más de 2.000 años de antigüedad”.
Bouchón estudió arte y es antropólogo, vivió para contar la Segunda Guerra Mundial y a fines de los ’50 llegó a la Argentina para promover el turismo a Francia. Logró que muchos argentinos viajen, pero no logró irse él mismo: “me atrapó, me fascinó este país”. En 1969 se instaló en Nono y fundó este museo único en el mundo.
Al llegar, la inmensa fachada nos recibe con 49 esculturas a escala real (obra del propio Bouchon) que representan la evolución del pensamiento humano: desde el Africanus

As materialization, it consists of a thrilling walk that started over 40 years ago in a beautiful spot in Traslasierra valley, in the province of Córdoba, 5 km away from Nono. However, the project dates from even earlier: “Ever since I was three, I’ve had my pockets full of little rocks, roots, live little animals”, says Juan Santiago Bouchon, owner and mastermind of the museum. “At the age of eight I made my first significant discovery in Nice, where I was born in 1926, when I dug out a Roman earthenware toy soldier which was over 2,000 years old.” /// Bouchon studied art and is an anthropologist. He lived to tell World War II and in the late 50’s he came to Argentina to promote tourism in France. He got many Argentineans travel to France, but he wasn’t able to do it himself: “I was captivated; I was fascinated by this country.” In 1969, he settled down in Nono and founded this one-of-a-kind museum. /// The massive façade welcomed us with 49 life-size sculptures (made by Bouchon himself), which represent the evolution of human thinking: from the Africanus to

Martin Luther King. “No Caesars, no Napoleons, no Bushes,” he adds. “They’re all pacifists, humanists.” /// It is impossible to list everything we were about to see in there: fossiles, embalmed animals, chariots and cars, reenactments of scenes from various times and social classes with original furniture, rocks, archeological remains, uniforms and weapons, religious icons, musical instruments, tools, works of art, toys, collections. “My museum is an attempt at syncretism,” points out Bouchon, and he succeeded: he put paleonthology, enthomology and anthropology together with history and culture. /// With a phrase, he summarises for me such a diverse assortment: “there’s a miracle in every cubic centimeter of the Universe. Everything is fascinating”. Bouchon speaks to everyone, converses with passion and detail, and never moves on without telling a joke. /// He has given free passes to 200,000 school boys and girls from all around the country because “it is not true that kids are not interested in culture. The system hides it from them, because the less cultivated they are, the easier it is to dominate them.” The system does not contribute to the museum; it is supported with the meager income from the ticket office and the gift shop. /// I visited the Rocsen museum twice. I spent several hours on both occasions. And still I have the feeling that I have a lot to see.

Es imposible detallar todo lo que nos espera allí dentro: fósiles, embalsamados, carruajes y autos, recreaciones de ambientes de épocas y clases sociales distintas con muebles originales, rocas, restos arqueológicos, uniformes y armas, íconos religiosos, instrumentos musicales, herramientas, obras de arte, juguetes, colecciones. “Mi museo es un intento de sincretismo” me señala Bouchón y eso logró: paleontología, entomología y antropología junto con la historia y la cultura.
Con una frase me resume tan variada colección: “hay un milagro en cada centímetro cúbico del universo. Todo es apasionante”. Bouchon habla con todo el mundo, explica con pasión y detalle y jamás sigue su camino sin antes contar un chiste.
Ha recibido gratis a 200.000 alumnos de escuelas de todo el país porque “no es verdad que a los jóvenes no les interese la cultura. El sistema se la esconde, porque cuanto más embrutecidos, más fáciles de dominar”. El sistema no aporta nada: el museo se sostiene con el módico precio de la entrada y la venta de souvenirs.
Estuve dos veces en el Rocsen. Varias horas, en ambas oportunidades. Tengo la sensación de que me falta muchísimo por descubrir aún. www.museorocsen.org

Se sabe: la grappa es una contundente bebida hecha con el orujo de la uva, que llegó de la mano de los inmigrantes italianos. / En Uruguay se hizo muy popular y allá por 1933 a Juan Carlos Rodríguez Carrese se le ocurrió probar diversos agregados, hasta encontrar la proporción exacta de miel de abejas que le daría ese sabor tan particular. / No fue amor a primera vista (o a primer trago, mejor dicho), se vendía bien, pero recién a finales de los 80 la marca líder empezó a impulsar su consumo y los uruguayos le dieron la gran bienvenida. Hoy, las casi 20 marcas de grappamiel, constituyen la cuarta bebida alcohólica más vendida (detrás de tanques históricos como la cerveza, el vino y el whisky). / El fenómeno también se expande a los comerciales de tv (o reclames, como también se los llama en Uruguay), con un personaje de polera que despierta tantos amores como odios, pero que popularizó su frase de remate (buscar en Youtube “grappamiel Vesubio”). Famosos músicos la han incorporado a sus versos y, si bien se consume mayormente en invierno, se sabe que muchas murgas suben al escenario después del rito de un buen trago de grappamiel. / Como acabamos de ver, si uno logra despegar a un uruguayo de su mate y su termo (algo que se parece bastante a extirparles un órgano), podemos encontrarnos con otras de sus tradiciones.
