Happy Holidays from Re:Vision

Is it really that time of year again? As we perform the winter ritual of putting our gardens to bed, giving thanks for the past twelve months and planning for 2015, it’s easy to get distracted by the buzz of the holiday season. With endless wish lists and “holiday deals”, we’re reminded of the glaring pressure to turn this time of year into a season of consumption.

I know many of you, like me, would like to find alternatives to make the holidays more meaningful and sustainable. Re:Vision’s annual Holiday Gift Catalogue makes this easy - you can give memorable gifts to the special people in your life while also making a world of difference.

The unique gifts in this catalogue have endless potential to improve the lives of people every day. I’ve seen firsthand

how learning to garden helps families living in food-desert neighborhoods embrace healthier eating habits, how helping women gain leadership skills transforms them into local change-makers, and the wonder on kids’ faces as they eat food they grew themselves.

By choosing these compassionate gifts, you will plant seeds of good health and economic opportunity for those

who need it most.

On behalf of those whose lives you will impact - thank you and happy holidays!

Sincerely,

Sarah ParmarPresident

This generous gift covers all supplies and necessary resources to help a low-income family establish a backyard garden, which includes a promotora that will visit them every week to teach them how to garden and cook with their fresh produce. CSA ShareWhole (20 weeks worth of veggies): $230

Half (10 weeks worth of veggies): $115

Food grown at Re:Vision’s community urban farm is distributed back to low-income families through a Community Supported Agriculture service, or CSA. Women’s EmpowermentPromotora Training Course

Whole: $200 | Share: $50

Investing in the education of women and improving their economic opportunities is a proven way to change a community. For this reason, Re:Vision hires residents as promotoras, or community health workers. Promotoras receive valuable training and gain marketable job skills in urban gardening, cooking, food preservation, nutrition, diabetes prevention, community health, public speaking, leadership, and community organizing. This gift supports training for promotoras and helps reduce the gender gap in economic participation.

Canning and Preservation CourseWhole: $250 | Share: $25

Families who participate in the Re:Farm backyard gardening program report a savings of approximately $100 per month on grocery bills during harvest months, which is close to 6 percent of their take home pay. The knowledge of how to preserve part of their harvest through canning, freezing and drying will extend the nutritional and economic benefits of their gardens.

My family and I are very thankful for the Re:Farm Denver program.

Having our own garden gives us quick and easy access to healthy, organic

vegetables, which we are proud to share with family and community

members. We especially appreciate everything that Re:Vision’s promotoras

have taught us about gardening and healthy eating!

Testimonials

I grew up farming with my family in

Durango, Mexico, which is a tradition

I’ve missed since I moved to Denver in

1997. I’ve always wanted to teach my

husband and daughters this part of my

culture, so was excited to start a garden

with the Re:Farm program. I have since

been able to reconnect to my roots, and

am now a proud promotora, teaching

others about the benefits of a backyard

garden. - Perla Mendez
