1. PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The purpose is to outline the proper procedure and methods for installing a SLIM Drive with

UDC.

2. RESPONSIBILITIES

Installer – Ensure proper installation of the SLIM Drive according to the standards outlined in

these instructions.

3. WORK INSTRUCTION

3.1 INSTALLING THE CHAIN AND MOTOR

3.1.1 The motor on the SLIM Drive is mounted in the lead-post and drives the door by traveling

on a fixed chain that runs down the B side of the chain guide. Start by placing the chain

tensioner into the jamb side of the track, making sure the chain attachment arm is on the B

side.

3.1.2 Install the track up to the repair piece and then load the panels and Cable Carrier (if

needed).

3.1.3 Measure the full length of the opening, from pocket wall to strike wall and subtract

34”.Cut a piece of #41 chain to that measurement, and slide the chain into the track.

Attach the chain to the leader chain that is attached to the tensioner with a #41 master link.

3.1.4 Next, take a piece of #41 chain cut approximately 3’ long and thread it through the three

sprockets on the motor assembly and slide the motor into the track.

3.1.5 Using a #41 master link attach the 3’ piece of chain that is threaded through the sprockets,

to the chain that you attached to the chain tensioner. While holding onto the motor, pull

the chain through the sprockets until the master link is at least 2’ past the sprockets. Take

out the link and remove the 3’ piece of chain.

3.2 Loading the SLIM Drive lead-post

3.2.1 Before installing the lead-post, adjust the pins and rollers on the top of the lead-post.

Space them 1” from the bottom of the roller to the top of the lead-post.

3.2.2 Install the SLIM Drive lead-post by lining up the rollers with the track and slide it in.

3.2.3 Place the chain captivator into the strike end of the track repair section and finish

installing the track. Leave the two pieces of soffit by the strike out for now. You may need

to adjust the track.

3.2.4 Next you will need to connect the door chain to the leader chain that is attached to the

captivator. Remove any excess chain leaving only enough to get the master link in.

version stored on \\OBIWON\ENGSHARE.

3.2.5 After you have linked the chain together, go to the pocket end of the track and turn the

tensioner clockwise to take the slack out of the chain. The chain on the SLIM Drive

system doesn’t need to be nearly as taught as it is on a pocket drive. The SLIM Drives

operate by picking the chain up and laying it back down behind it. You don’t have to

worry about it coming off of a sprocket.

3.2.6 Next you will need to bolt the motor to the SLIM Drive post. Slide the SLIM Drive post

and the motor together and attach them using the four 3/8”x7/8”x16 bolts provided. Just

snug them down for now, you will need to loosen them later for final adjustment.

3.2.7 Install the diagonal bar.

3.2.8 Push the lead-post back and forth in the track to check how freely it is moving. You will

know you have found the proper tension when the lead-post moves freely with the least

amount of chain noise.

3.2.9 After you’ve finished adjusting the chain, hold the lead-post flat against the strike wall and

tighten down the ½” bolts in the diagonal bar.

3.2.10 Next, loosen the four bolts on the motor bracket and move the lead-post back to the

pocket.

- Center the post between the pocket walls by moving the nuts on the pin and

rollers.

- After centering the lead-post between the pocket walls tighten the nuts on the pin and

rollers followed by the bolts on the motor bracket.

3.2.11 Move the lead-post back to the strike wall and check to see if the lead-post is level from

side to side. If you need to adjust the lead-post, do so by moving the front of the Unitized

Track up or down. If there is a corner nearby you may want to set the lead-post by

measuring from the top and bottom of the corner instead.

3.2.12 Next, install the rest of the soffit and T-mold in the track. Check to see if the lead-post is

still flat to the wall and adjust the diagonal bar if needed.

the stud before attaching it. This will

position the hinge so that it allows the

panels to stack tightly in the pocket when

the door is operating. Next, starting at the

bottom hole, use a level to plumb the

panels and screw the hinge to the stud.

5.2 Attach the Lead hinge on the panels to the

SLIM Drive post using self-tapping screws.

6. PROGRAMMING THE SLIM DRIVE

6.1 The SLIM Drive uses what is called

“Current Sensing” that takes the place of a

leading edge. The system allows the door

to slow down before going into the pocket

which reduces bellowing. It also slows

down before going into the strike reducing

stress on the post. When you first power on

the SLIM Drive, it will ask you to re-zero

the door. You do this by simply running

the door into the strike.

6.2 To program the door, plug the PET into the

port on the B side of the post. Go to

“Setup”, and select “Setting Door Limits”

and push enter. Push the post back into the

pocket until the SLIM Drive is flat with the

wall. Next push “Close” and let the door

go all the way to the strike wall. The door

will need to open and close a few times for

it to get its profile. It is normal for the door

to run slower than usual until it finds its

profile. Program the rest of the functions

and back-up all of the settings.

7. INSTALLING THE STRIKERS

7.1 The SLIM Drive strikers consist of two

pieces. The striker itself is attached to the

wall with screws. The striker cover is

snapped onto the striker.

7.2 Start by measuring from finished floor to

the bottom of the plenum walls. Cut the

strikers and striker covers to this

measurement.

7.3 Run the door to the strike wall and

measure out ¼”from both sides of the post,

top and bottom, making a mark with your

pencil at each location. Place the inside

piece of striker up against the wall and line

the inside edge up with the pencil marks

and screw it to the wall using the holes

provided.

7.4 The inside edge is the one with the deep L

shape where the spring loaded pin will

engage when there is a fire. Repeat the

procedure to the other side.
