Review
• Watch the following video and write down the organelles and transport systems that you recognize. Find at least 3• “Inner Life of a Cell”• http://www.studiodaily.com/main/technique/tprojects/6850.ht

2.3 Applications of Cellular Transport in
Industry and Medicine
•Knowledge about the cell membrane has prompted industrial use of synthetics to mimic natural functions•This area is known as membrane technologies
Proteins
•Recognition proteins are embedded in the cell membrane, but stick out into the cell’s surroundings• They allow cells to recognize one another
Proteins
• Receptor proteins bind specifically with certain molecules to bring them into the cells by endocytosis• Viruses such as HIV use receptor proteins to target
human cells• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nh18FvzjFnQ

Synthetic Membrane Technology• Liposomes are fluid filled sacs surrounded by
a phospholipid bilayer identical to the cell membrane in human cells• They are used to deliver drugs to infected
areas of the body• Liposomes are used in gene therapy by
injecting DNA into tumour cells
Transport of Protein Hormones• Insulin is a small protein produced in the pancreas• It is a hormone, meaning that it is secreted into the
bloodstream and binds with membrane receptors• Specialized cells in the pancreas have channels that
detect glucose in the bloodstream, this initiates the release of insulin• The binding of the insulin and glucose stimulates the
rate of movement into the cells using facilitated diffusion.
Reverse Osmosis
•Desalination is the process of removing salt from sea water in order to make it drinkable.• This process is known as reverse osmosis
because the water moves from low water concentrations (high salt concentration) to a high water concentration (low salt concentration).
Reverse Osmosis
•RO makes use of semi-permeable membranes that allow water to be forced through but filter out molecules or micro-organisms
Peritoneal Dialysis
•Read section on page 286 and 287 on Peritoneal Dialysis• In groups of three (with people you are sitting by)
work on Minds On… Simulating Peritoneal Dialysis • In the next class you will present this information
To Do
• Answer questions 2-6 on page 288
