What is the Review Text ?

Review text is an evaluation of a publication, such as a movie, video game, musical composition, book;

SOCIAL FUNCTION

To critique or evaluate an art work or event for a public audience.

GENERIC STRUCTURE

• Orientation : Background information of the text.

• Evaluations : Concluding statement : judgement, opinion, or recommendation. It can consist of more than one.

• Interpretative Recount : Summary of an art works including character and plot.

• Evaluative Summation : The last opinion consisting the appraisal or the punch line of the art works  being criticized.

LANGUAGE FEATURES

1. Focus on specific participants; name of the artworks, we, she, him, etc.

2. Using adjectives appraisals; good, bad, etc3. Use of simple present tense; to express the

evaluation.4. Use of simple past tense; to tell the past event of

the summary.5. Using long and complex clauses; main clause and

dependent clause.6. Using metaphorical languages; metaphorical

equivalent.

The Lord of the Ring

The Lord of the Rings is a fairy-tale of myth and fantasy. Peter Jackson directed a film that was considered, for a very long time, impossible to make, and not only for technical reasons. The narrative roots are incredibly long and detailed, and the storyline is deeply connected with the creation of a fantastic continent from a time unknown called `Middle Earth'. Its author, Tolkien, dedicated a considerable part of his life developing this continent's background, its mythology and origins, its different kinds of people, cultures and languages, and therefore its geographic references are determinant to the unfolding of the story of the One Ring

ORIENTATION

The greatest thing about this film, to me, is that it broughtme back to a time when I was in love with a differentworld where everything was possible. Reading The Lord of the Rings night after night, I came to understand what thisthing of `mankind' really was all about. The corruption of absolute power, the importance and value of friendship,the inevitability of growing up, the strength of hope. Thatthis film could capture that magic, and be a new bearer toits message of humanism, is a statement to its greatness.Gandalf's words, that even the smallest person maychange the course of the world, and have a part to play in the destiny of all, are immortal

EVALUATIONS

An ancient Ring thought lost for centuries has been found, and through a strange twist in fate has been given to a small Hobbit named Frodo. When Gandalf discovers the Ring is in fact the One Ring of the Dark Lord Sauron, Frodo must make an epic quest to the Cracks of Doom in order to destroy it! However he does not go alone. He is joined by Gandalf, Legolas the elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Aragorn, Boromir and his three Hobbit friends Merry, Pippin and Samwise. Through mountains, snow, darkness, forests, rivers and plains, facing evil and danger at every corner the Fellowship of the Ring must go. Their quest to destroy the One Ring is the only hope for the end of the Dark Lords reign

Interpretative Recount

In the end, this is a wonderful film, but that doesn't mean you are going to like it. I cannot tell you what it is like to see this film if you don't know or love the book. But I hope it may plant a seed on your heart to discover a great world of fantasy, beauty and humanity. I believe Tolkien would have liked that\

Evaluation Summary

This is a movie adapted from a best-selling Indonesian novel. It took 40 days of filming on Belitung Island, Bangka-Belitung province. Involving 12 local actors, it reportedly cost Rp 8 billion. With all the efforts of transforming Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Warrior) into a moving picture, will it satisfy readers’ imaginations?

Laskar Pelangi, the novel, was written by Andrea Hirata in 2005, based on his own experiences. It is about an inspiring teacher and her 10 students in the poverty-stricken Kampung Gantong in Belitung. The poor condition of their school building does not dampen their high spirits and hopes for a better future.

Two years later, the novel became a phenomenon in Indonesian literature. With its humanistic touch, Laskar Pelangi has sold more than 500,000 copies and has won the position of Must-Read Novel in every corner of the nation’s bookshops and media review pages. It has finally overcome the domination of teen-lit, chick-lit and even religious novels, the popular theme of today.

Andrea entrusted the filming of the story to the respected figures in the film industry, Mira Lesmana and Riza, as producer and film director. In July 2007, Mira and Riri started the pre-production, which took a year to finish. Together with the scriptwriter Salman Aristo they decided to create a different scenario for the film.
